the four of us had a fantastic meal at Pascalou. the cocktails were well made and generous. the wine list by the glass or bottle was diverse. we had the mussels, dumplings and potato gateau appetizers and they were delicious. the duck breast entree with asparagus was perfectly prepared as was the mushroom ravioli entree. the beef bourguignon was tender but needed salt, then quite delicious. the service was attentive but not intrusive. the upstairs seating was romantic and intimate, great low noise level for conversation. the plates were beautifully presented. a wonderful meal was had and we will go to Pascalou again! I must say something about the menu. We had a seafood lover, a meat eater and a vegetarian dine with us. We came here tonight for a family birthday celebration. The hostess and waiter were kind and accommodating, making us feel welcome and taken care of. We split the Caesar salad, which was the highlight of the meal. The lettuce - topped with a light dressing, sliced apples, and pecans - was flavorful, but not overpowering (as Caesar salads tend to be). For our entrees we ordered the fisherman's stew - a mixture of fluke, shrimps, mussels and clams in a basil sauce, and the veal with spinach and polenta. Both dishes were sizable portions and made of fresh ingredients. The sauces weren't overpowering and the meal left us feeling satisfied, but not heavy (unlike many other French restaurants). Overall, this is a lovely restaurant with a calm, inviting atmosphere, lovely staff and satisfying, but light food. We will definitely be back for future family dinners. read more

I love Pascalou. Its food is always good and there is such a range of choices you would think this is a big restaurant with a large kitchen. But it's not -- in fact, its smallness gives a feeling of intimacy. I have been there many times, both for lunch and dinner, and enjoy trying new dishes each time. Looking for a place to celebrate with a friend & found this gem. Right off they have some of my fab French dishes. So we ordered some of our usual. Foi Gra, French onion soup, chocolate souffle & the new thing, seafood potpie. Surprisingly everything was delicious and great portion size. The staff are all helpful and friendly. Two recommendations, the portion of the foia gra we received was 1/3 less than the table next to us, please consider portion & the whipped cream vs. The ice cream ratio was 2:1. We long-time neighborhood patrons have had recent disappointments with Asian offerings, such as curry-flavored, not comparable in flavor/intensity to a favorite Malaysian restaurant. Bad enough. Worse and more recent: we looked for the French Classic Boeuf Bourguignon, but it was not on the menu, and we were told it was a Special. We were so pleased, but It was under-cooked greyish beef cubes of inedible half fat and grizzle un-integrated into insipid, bland watery "sauce", as if you Did Not REALLY Have It, but threw it together hoping it would be acceptable. NOT!!! For the real Asian thing we will have to go to the West Side. Next time will first ask for the chef's strong points, if any, and expect the truth. We're fine with service and ambiance, but in winter you need something to keep the cold air from rushing in each time the front door opens. read more

Really surprised by the good reviews. We were nearby and looking for lunch; saw the high ranking and picked this restaurant. It was definitely on the dingy side of quaint. There was a stain on the tablecloth, dust on the wall panels, splatter on the wall. Ordered from the very eclectic menu, and probably should have been wiser not to pick non French dishes at a French bistro. The grilled shrimp was not grilled and not tasty. Ravioli were passable. Salmon poke was just unpalatable -- cured or cooked salmon pieces with olives, capers, tomatoes, lettuce -- with avocado, lemon and seaweed. Just, what? We paid $80 for this hard won lesson. Came here because I found the twilight dinner deal where if you came around 5-630, you can have a prefixe 3 course meal for $28. Starting from the bread, it was very chewy and kind of hard to bite but the butter was great. The first course was pate and it was huge and filling but a bit too salty for me so i had to ask for refill of the bread to eat it with. The second course was lamb polenta but i was too full after the pate and the polenta was very filling too. I wish the minced lamb was less fatty. For the tiramisu, it was literally dripping water and the alcohol taste was almost zero and the cake was melting so was not that good. Last but not least, thanks to Yelp, there was check-in offer of a free glass of wine and that was a good bonus to the meal! However, I was really shocked by the fact that there was no AC on the second floor and it was like 90+ degree outside and it was hot and really hard to eat during this condition and the staff was trying to bring fans but it could not blow wind for the whole place. Overall, the price for the amount of food is still good but do not expect to have a good condition when you come. read more

This is an absolutely lovely place, and since my wife and I are moving to the neighborhood, we will certainly become regulars. We had our first meal at Pascalou tonight with two of our kids and it was great. Cocktails were creative and generous. Starters were anchovies, pâté, and onion tart. Mains were lamb chops, duck breast, duck confit and veal scallopini. Everything was delicious. Prices were very reasonable, including for the wine (a well selected Madiran from Gascony). Staff were welcoming, knowledgeable and just down to earth. We were treated extremely well. This is the kind of neighborhood place that you expect only locals to know about, and that's fine with us. Pascalou is a charming little bistro on Madison avenue which is reminiscent of Parisian cafes. The The crew here is super friendly and we ended up chatting with them for most of our meal. It's made the experience very special. The food is mostly French fusion, yet there is enough international selection to keep most people happy. I started with a prosecco based drink which was crisp and tangy perfect for summer. The French onion soup is delicious as it should be in every French restaurant. I tried the chicken tagine and the seafood soup and both were flavorful and came as generous potions. The desserts were yummy especially the bread pudding with ice cream. The pricing is fair, yes, Pascalou makes it is possible to have a reasonably priced meal in the Upper East Side. Highly recommended! read more

We have frequented for years - last night we were disappointed with food and service. Started out leisurely- brought our own wine - cork fee- no problem. However our waiter was rude- didn't like that my friend asked why he never poured the wine - and it went downhill from there with regards to service. I was disappointed with Pascalou's food and its service. The staff are disorganized and confused. Multiple people approached our table with the same questions, within minutes of each other. After we gave the host our reservation and were seated, another staff member came by and asked ... if we had a reservation. They don't seem to have assigned waitstaff to tables ... so it's a bit of a free-for-all. My tea (which turned out to be a mug of hot water and a tea bag) took 10-15 minutes to arrived (ostensibly because the water was boiling ... with what, a tea light?). The vegetable that accompanied each main were drab and lifeless, the victim of an unjust steaming (who does this in 2021?). I have to say that Pascalou took me by surprise. It's a French restaurant, but they had Red Curry Shrimp as one of their lunch menu options. I was skeptical at first of ordering curry at a French restaurant, but I got one regardless because I was seriously in a mood for some curry. The curry went beyond my expectations. It was extremely creamy and tasted slightly similar to Thai green curry, which is one of my all-time favorite dishes. Interestingly, Pascalou chopped in small slices of green apples into the curry, which I actually thought were nice additions to the dish. I also loved the rice. They were yellow rice instead of white, but it complemented the curry very well. Shrimps were super plump and juicy, and they weren't those cheap cocktail shrimps that many restaurants use for their seafood dishes. Granted, however, this was an $18 dish, and there were only five pieces of shrimps in it. I also ordered the half-chicken dish, and this too was tasty. Chicken meat was very tender that it fell right off the bones, and the string beans and potatoes served on the side were sprinkled with just the right amount of salt and pepper. The only thing I would negatively point out is the complementary bread: I never ate a bread that dry and hard. I almost just left it uneaten (which is never the case for me when it comes to bread) but decided to dip it in my curry. If it wasn't for the curry, however, I definitely think I would've just left the bread alone after the first bite! read more

I love this restaurant! You cannot beat the authenticity of the dishes. I've had the duck confit, the seafood risotto, the lobster over polenta, the chocolate soufflé and a few other dishes. I had a wonderful lunch at this charming cafe. It is very small although it has 2 floors. Probably good to make a reservation during dinner and weekends. They have an extensive menu of traditional French items as well as some more American type food. I decided to go with the duck confit salad. It turned out to be really good. The duck was perfectly cooked and the salad had a nice variety of shaved beets and other veggies on lettuce. There was also a nice Dijon mustard and fruit compote to flavor the duck which worked well together. The service could have been better, especially by the end of lunch when the restaurant was pretty empty yet we still had to ask for the dessert menu and check more than once. For dessert we had the bananas foster. It was so good and presented very unusually as the ice cream came in a little side dish and the bananas were inside a puff pastry!
