Jacques has become one of our favorite special-occasion restaurants on the Upper East Side. When we're celebrating something or simply want a memorable meal, Jacques is at the top of the list. The restaurant feels like a little piece of Paris tucked into the neighborhood, with vintage French advertisements decorating the walls, attentive service, and a menu that consistently delivers. On warm evenings, the outdoor seating is especially lovely. White tablecloths, cocktails, and excellent food create an experience that feels elevated without being stuffy. Dogs are welcome outside, and on our most recent visit there were several of us furry diners patiently supervising our humans' meals... My mom couldn't decide what to order, so she went with two appetizers. The salmon tartare was outstanding and unlike any she'd had before, with a unique flavor that may have included ginger. She also ordered the sea scallops served with Black Forbidden Rice and a Madras Curry Emulsion. The sauce was rich, unique, and absolutely delicious. Dad stayed loyal to his steak frites with au poivre sauce, which never disappoints. The cocktails were equally impressive. Mom enjoyed a seasonal special called the "Gin and Chill," while Dad ordered an Old Fashioned. There isn't a dog menu, but that didn't stop me from carefully monitoring every plate that arrived at the table in hopes of an accidental tasting opportunity. The perfect restaurant to celebrate a romantic and intimate birthday. The staff was super friendly and welcoming and the dinner never felt rushed at all. The beef bourguignon was extremely tender and better than any of the dishes I had when I was in Paris several months prior. I would come back just to have the beef bourguignon again. This was our first time eating here and we will definitely return! The ambiance takes you back to Paris and embraces a traditional brasserie. It's a place where you can even take your parents to as it's not too loud and a great vibe to have a conversation. We tried restaurant week and were very pleased with our dishes. Hubby and I recently tried this restaurant with our friends. I wanted to try another type of French restaurant. This is a classic-looking cafe with indoor and outdoor seating areas. We didn't order appetizers and went straight for the entrees. I ordered the roasted half chicken, which was served with mashed potatoes. My chicken dish was good. Hubby had the Niçoise salad. Both dishes were very good. I thought they could do better with the chicken. It was nothing special, with a nice taste, but it was average. I expected more in terms of tenderness and flavor. Hubby's Nicoise salad was better than my chicken dish. Our waiter for the evening was Fernando (I think that's his name). He took care of our table professionally. This cosy bistro is hiding in plain sight on a side street. It was really charming on a cold December night with festive holiday decorations. The small bar was surprisingly active for a Sunday night. It looked like there was a coterie of regulars. The staff were nice. We were started off with good bread. My glass of Cabernet was good, but there was a bunch of sediment in it. We only had one course. The food was good to very good. The steak frites were better than average. My wife's salmon was good. The beef bourguignon was made with beef cheeks. My buddy liked it. The other member of our group had onion soup and a salad and was happy. Prices are more than two stars, with many main courses in the upper forty to mid fifty dollar range. This takes Jacques out of neighborhood bistro territory into serious French restaurant territory. I'm not sure that I would rather eat here than at La Gouloue. Every third Sunday evening a French burlesque show adds a bit of excitement. One of the places we like to frequent on the upper east side when we are in town. I was reading some of the negative reviews about service but our service was fine. No attitude from anybody, food came timely, and water glasses were full. A lot of people order the mussels and fries which seems to be a specialty here. We usually go to Flex Mussels for this type of meal. My wife had the steak and fries which she enjoyed and I had the lamb chops. Everything was cooked perfectly and very tasty. My late wife and I and our son each year celebrated Thanksgiving at this restaurant. Since the passing of my wife in 2023 my son and I have continued that tradition. We did so because, prior to this past Thursday, it has always been an excellent dinner. However, this past Thanksgiving my son and I found the Turkey Dinner to be very disappointing. The presentation of the food was aesthetically very poor given a number of the sides were missing and the turkey was just dumped on top of some mush and the amount of food was less than in the past. It was just a cheapened meal in terms of what was offered. The restaurant did not respond to our email conveying our complaint. This place is so delicious! The decor and ambiance are welcoming and cozy. They have a coat check and all the staff are very nice. We had escargot, foie gras, three cheeses, steak frites, and duck. Everything was absolutely amazing. I expected the duck to come with one leg, but it came with two! Outside "cafe' seating style includes an enclosed for winter sidewalk area plus a separate (and soon to be seasonal) street hut seating. Jacques is a local restaurant we frequent for special occasions. Last time we went was in August for my birthday. I swore I would never go back because of the bad service. When I made the reservation I told the Manager of the previous experience and he said he would be there last night and would make sure the experience would be better. I also said it was my husband's birthday thinking (silly me) they would not charge for a drink or perhaps dessert. I was wrong. Not a happy birthday - nothing. Don't get me wrong. The food is very good. I had their Angus burger which is excellent and my husband had the onion soup and beef bourgeoisie which he loved. Crème brûlée was awesome. It's the service I am judging this on. You would think after expressing my dissatisfaction at the previous experience some accommodation would have been made. This a truly a professionally run restaurant that caters to everyone. I will put a hybrid review since I came prior to pandemic shutdown and after when they have outdoor seating. Prior to pandemic, many residents of the neighborhood come here. Why? The food is superb, the service is top notch, the decor is dim lighting and romantic. The last is the owner Jacques who comes over to your table with such a friendly welcome and smile. He really wants his patrons to have a good experience. It shows since this place is always full. Before pandemic, you could be listening to live jazz music on different days of the week. The bartender knows his drinks. The wait staff are efficient and professional. There is nothing else more to say about that. What to eat? My favorites are escargot, frisee salad, foie gras, grilled shrimp and avocado, creme brulee and the wine selections. The wine selections are so good, you can drink until you are drunk, go home (in an Uber of course), and never feel a hangover! That shows the quality of wines Jacques has. I should mention they have lambchops that are delicious. During pandemic and outdoor seating. Jacques adopted well. Not easy for any restaurateur in NYC. Plenty of tables on the sidewalk as well as the makeshift areas on the street. Difference is, you actually feel safe on the street and barely notice the cars driving thru because of how the barriers are placed and the vegetation he has placed for decor. My friends were already seated prior to my arrival and I drove down 85th st and was able to say hi and that I will be looking for parking. The Maitre D heard, because Joe is so attentive to the customers, by the time I found a quick parking around the corner, Joe had already signaled the staff to have a chair there by the table prior to my arrival. Thats customer service!! Fernando was waiting on us and the items we ordered, arrived quickly. The Stephanie Herman Show returns to NYC. We took a chance trying this charming French Brasserie. Walking inside I was transformed into Paris with smiles from the help. Our waiter Andreas was superb, sharing his enthusiasm and history of this little gem. We were seated at a lovely big table facing Art Deco posters. We stared with generous sized cocktail. A most delightful lunch at Jacques Bistro that turned into a 2 hour gastronomic affair. Conveniently located just a few blocks from the Metropolitan Museum of Art we broke up our day of art appreciation to enjoy food art at this lovely old world French Bistro I started off with an appetizer of Steak Tartare and my wife had the Frisée Salad which she described as near perfect. We enjoyed these over a nice bottle of Provence Rosè. My kids got the Croque Monsieur and Hamburger which they thoughtfully brought with our entree's. For main I had the Mussels Dijonaise, my first time trying it with this sauce. They were sublime and my new favorite way to enjoy this classic French dish. My wife had the Steak Frites and she was kind enough to share a few bites with me. Perfectly prepared, this was one of the best steaks I've had. Our waitress Sara gave me a tasting of a few Rouge Wines she recommended and I found the perfect accompaniment to our main. For dessert we all shared the Tarte Tatin, the most delicious variation of this that I've had. A day at the museum and a meal at Jacques is a most delightful way to spend a day in New York read more

Cheap French place without conscience, not even a half of take out place Specifically told them to add sauce on the side, they get used to give dry and lack of sauce beef bourguignon, the dish normally gets really dry with only meat remains without any sauce left. Before the server handed me the take out, I specifically asked them if the sauce is inside, and the server said yes - it's all inside, and it ended up with nothing inside other than the main dish. what a lying in front of your face. Can it be more cheap? Keep this level of conscience and dishonesty, your business will thrive just like your mediocre yelp review. Like this place a lot. Been here twice (during covid) and had a really nice dinner each time. So far I've had the steak frites, burger and French onion soup. The soup was really great the first time, a little less good the second (a little watery). Good portion and generous on the cheese which is always a huge positive. The steak frites was delicious, sizable steak (I think 12 ounces, or close) and amazing fries. I am a huge bearnaise fan so I like how they give you an option for au pouvire or bearnaise, unlike many places. Burger was also good, although I'd definitely return to the steak frites when I got back. GREAT outdoor setup if you can get a spot on the street, but the other side is nice and warm too. During my vacation in New York a friend (local New York resident) recommended Jacques. The restaurant overall had a nice ambiance and definitely would be a nice spot to eat with a date or close friends. The food was delicious. We had the escargot as an appetizer, the steak frites and dish of the day which was a bass in tarragon sauce, then we finished with crème brûlée and the chocolate soufflé. Everything to me tasted great and the wine we chose paired very well. The waiters, especially Fernando, provided us with great service and were very attentive to all our needs. A very solid neighbourhood staple. It has adapted well in Covid and offers pleasant looking seating on the sidewalk. This is my first review of the restaurant even though I have been several times previously. It's just good solid French brasserie type food. We were taken as a celebratory treat last week by 2 good friends. Between us we had wine, cocktails, moules frites, steak and duck breast. I had the duck breast and it was perfectly cooked medium rare, sitting on top of tasty garnish with enough flavour to complement the duck. Service was friendly, and there are always customers (although in off hours certainly a few older ones...!) The neighbourhood has lost a couple of classic French places in recent years so good to have this one still in place - although a fire in the next door restaurant a year ago must have made this scary for them! read more
