Winter Restaurant Week Review 1/6: I went back to this popular Alsatian spot for Winter Restaurant Week a few days ago with a group, having gone there once before for Summer Restaurant Week, as per the previous review, and once otherwise to share a few plates during one of my usual group dinners. Compared to many other French spots, it is a bit more reasonably priced, at $45 instead of $60, and with no listed add-ons. The service was friendly enough, but we had a surprisingly quick meal for a French place, so I guess this Alsatian meal was more German than French, since we were in and out in around an hour. In terms of the daily offerings, as the menu online lists daily specials for the appetizer and main, the Soup Du Jour was vichyssoise, and the main was an Alsatian fish dish with green pesto and other things, which sounded unique, but I was in the mood for duck. I didn't bother with wine, though someone else had a glass, and for food, most of us stuck with the same dishes, except, I believe, someone got the trout instead of the choucroute. They gave us some crusty bread to begin with, which was warm and tasty. Most of us went with the Pétatou Gratine to start, consisting of a warm potato and Vermont goat cheese gratin, olive Niçoise, basil pesto, and a bouquet of mixed greens. The warm gratin was mildly salty taste with a mild goat cheese funk. and was pleasant. The olive and basil added some freshness. This was good, and a few of us used the remaining bread to soak up the remaining pesto. My main dish was the Choucroute De Canard with duck confit, duck sausage, steamed potatoes, Riesling braised sauerkraut, and natural duck jus. This version of Choucroute garnie was quite different from last year's offering, being entirely duck-focused, as per the word canard, rather than a mix of pork products. The sausage was mild, with a light snap and a pretty juicy interior. The best part was the confit, which was nicely crispy on the outside and very tender inside. The sauerkraut, as last year, is slightly sweeter than the typical German variety, as it is braised in Riesling and contains some juniper berries, which weren't the most pleasant to bite into. As last year, I was not a fan of the potatoes, as they were undercooked and still slightly hard. In general, I preferred it this year, as the duck was better than anything in last year's version, even if the dish was a bit less filling overall. For dessert, we all chose the Alsatian Brioche Mandiat with caramelized banana, coconut sorbet, and crème Anglaise. This was the highlight of the meal and was also a pastry I'd never had before. The laminated pastry dough had a light crisp and plenty of banana inside, with the sorbet being sweet but not too much. I expected the dish overall to be a bit too sweet from the combination, but thankfully it wasn't, as the buttery brioche presumably helped balance it. This was excellent, and I wouldn't mind buying a larger version for a party or something. If they charged $60 again, I probably would have reduced my rating to 4, especially given the service feeling a bit too rushed, even for my taste. However, at $45, I would still recommend them. read more

I would say this establishment has a high floor. Everything that we order was of good quality. With that being said I would also add that all of the sweet items we tried were spectacular. The pain au chocolate is made in house and the pancakes had a homemade raspberry sauce that made them great. The rest (omelettes) were good. We got complimentary bread and it was warm and fluffy, with butter and marmalade. I didn't get this last time so I wonder if we got this because we were a big group? I got the shakshuka which has a French Onion soup like cheese exterior. It comes with hard bread and was a decent rendition, I would get again. We picked Cafe D'Alsace for our annual Hanukkah dinner based on dining at another restaurant in the neighborhood a month ago. I must say, the UES continued to impress as far as dining options and quality. This is a beautiful French bistro that offers both French and German cuisine where one can find Charcuterie, Steak Tartare and Grilled Shrimp prepared with their heads on. The decor is quite beautiful with antique colored seltzer bottles, white table cloths and banquets for seating. You can order à la carte or have their Prix Fixe menu for $58 which includes appetizer, entree and dessert. Here's what our Hanukkah feast consisted of: 1. Appetizers: Rochelle ordered the pureed Lentils soup with bacon. She loved it! I ordered the delicious chopped salad which had Kalamata olives ( love, love!), so fresh and filling. 2. Entrees: I ordered the Tagliatelle Provencal which had pasta with sliced artichokes, roasted tomatoes, pine nuts and Nicoise olives with shaved Parmigiano Reggiano and pesto in a sherry shallot vinaigrette. Scrumptious! Rochelle ordered the Farmhouse Chicken with Yukon mashed potatoes and string beans in chicken jus. The chicken was so tender and cooked perfectly. 3. Dessert: Tahitian Vanilla Creme Brûlée, decadent, creamiest and dreamiest, ate every morsel. Beverage: I opted for the non alcoholic Lychee Moscow Mule with ginger; refreshing! Our waiter was terrific and the service is impeccable. This is a top notch traditional restaurant and reservations are necessary. We are obsessed with this place even though they have basically no vegan options. It is an iconic spot that defines the neighborhood. From morning until night, they are full of people genuinely enjoying elevated classic dishes, great service, and the coziest, classiest atmosphere. This is my favorite place in the neighborhood. I love the bartenders, they make fantastic drinks. They have a great HH, 5-8 on drinks and 5-7 on food. The chopped salad is amazing and the steak tartare is my favorite dish. It's finely ground and has shallots and the perfect ratio of ingredients. Stopped by for a cosy brunch on a Saturday - the two of us managed to snag a res the evening before, but they did seem Quite busy, so definitely plan ahead! We ordered eggs benedict and shakshuka to share. We opted for the bistro ham for the eggs benedict and it was very delicious! The eggs were poached very nicely and I really liked the sides (potatoes and salad both very yummy). Shakshuka was also pretty good, flavour profile with all the spices mixed with the slightly roasted/smokey tomato was nice, would also recommend this dish. I wish they gave more bread hehe Portion size was fairly big -- we didn't quite finish, but also perhaps our appetites were a bit small -- and I think the overall price point was quite fair for the quality and quantity of food. That being said, from these two dishes specifically there was nothing that particularly stood out as unique or spectacular in the universe of UES brunch places. It gave me art deco vibes and was very nicely decorated for the holiday season. We asked to be seated in a 2 person booth which they accommodated for us since it was early in the evening. My boyfriend surprised me by taking me there one evening, and we were both blown away by the quality of the food, the service, and the ambiance. We started with the flatbread (or "flammekueche," as we call it in French), which was absolutely delicious. For our mains, I had the grilled bass, and my boyfriend opted for the "choucroute garnie," which was incredibly authentic and generously portioned. Amazing brunch place! Cafe D'Alsace is a really pretty restaurant for brunch in good weather with the outdoor seating and open windows. My friend and I ordered the salmon eggs Benedict and croque madame and they were delicious! I love the French flair and menu options and I feel like you can't go wrong with anything. Everything was flavorful and well made. The side of fries and side salad were also a great addition to the meal. Our waitress was really warm and attentive as well and our dishes came out promptly. It can get busy so I would recommend making a reservation but even without, it was easy to be seated relatively promptly! For appetizers we got the raw salmon crudo, highly recommend for a refreshing starter. The flatbread was okay. Ordered Steak Frites ($46) medium rare and it came out perfectly soft immersed in their dark wine sauce and a side of yummy thin fries. Had brunch here last week and had a nice time. Although we didn't make a reservation, we were able to get seats at the bar. It's very packed so unless you are ok with outdoor seating, would recommend a reservation. The interior is cute and cozy. Service was nice, no complaints there. Now onto the food. We got the croque madame and the French toast. The croque madame comes with a side of fries and salad with a light dressing. A bit disappointing as it was rather... normal? The sourdough(?) bread was fine, there is a hearty amount of ham though my partner disagreed and thought it was less than hearty with butter slabbed underneath but it didn't seem to make help with the taste. Nothing wrong with it but I would say very average especially for $24. Thus the 3 stars. That being said, it was rather large. The fries were realllyy good and probably I liked them more than the dish itself. The French toast was fine, decently sized portion of bread and not incredibly fluffy but still airy. What really blew me away was the sauce though - the berry sauce is phenomenal. Unfortunately that was really what made the dish for me, and probably most of the brunch. That and the fries that came with the croque madame which were crisp and not too salty. All in all, I enjoyed my time but I think probably not a return for me, unless it's to try the $39 pre-fixe dinner menu one day. Cafe d'alsace has been in the neighborhood for years and this is their new location a block away. It is a nice location, typical bistro in Paris, nothing fancy. Given the name of a location, I was not surprised there were a lot of pork options, in fact this part of France is close to Germany. I knew I wanted to have the steak frites and hubby got the sea bass. I was displeased with the size of my hanger steak, it was literally 6 small pieces all bite size. I was craving a lot more meat. However the red wine shallot sauce it came with was absolutely delicious and the fries are amazing! My hubby's sea bass was also delightful. The service was also excellent. Our service was so friendly and talkative with us. Overall the sauces are delicious, however the portion of my steak was so itty bitty. I first walked by Cafe D'Alsace in the summer and saw their cute bistro tables outside, but there was a long wait. I finally made a Sunday morning reservation in February for soon after they opened and there was a lot of availability. The cappuccino was great! We also ordered an Irish coffee. The omelette Maison was delicious, and I was able to swap the goat cheese out for Gruyère. The potatoes that came with it were perfectly seasoned and the dressing on the greens was delectable! This cafe rock! The first time we came here for brunch and sat by the window. We had the best brunch! This lovely restaurant has a few dining sections. The back is perfect for a private party. In the front is the main dining area, next to it is a bar area and the outside seating covers the entire restaurant front with comfy seats. We ordered the artisan smoked salmon served with country bread on a big wooden tray. It also came with the salmon spread. Wow! This was a perfect dish! Fresh salmon and bread. That was Hubby's dish, but of course, what's his is mine lol. I had omelet Maison. It's a goat cheese and spinach omelet. It was served with mesclun salad and roasted potatoes. It was yummy! Most importantly everything was fresh! We had a great waiter named Maddy. We returned for dinner the following week and sat at the same table. We love this table! I had rainbow trout from the specials and Hubby had a burger. Wow! Fantastique! See, eating here improves my French, which I don't speak. We also ordered a cheesecake after the meal. Wow! The cheesecake comes with some cream on top which I removed to the side. Incredible! We will return for dinner soon. Definitely will be back for brunch too. Restaurant Week NYC: Cafe d'Alsace Had a very great experience in France a couple weeks ago with their cuisine so I was excited to try this restaurant's restaurant week special. I got their 2 course lunch for (30). I started with the Winter Salad: endive, Bartlett pear, toasted walnuts, Roquefort, herb vinaigrette and got their Plat Du Jour which turned out to be a pesto fettuccine. The winter salad was very interesting, it had a lot of ingredients I don't usually find in my local salad. The pesto fettuccine was pretty good, it was a good amount, the top of the noodles were a bit roasted for some extra flavor, but I wasn't a fan of the overall dish. It was very heavy on the noodles and I wish they added other ingredients to complement it. It was okay, but I don't think their lunch restaurant week was that worth it. read more

This review is a bit delayed, went late summer 2025 for lunch. We were seated outside which for the weather was perfect. Realize this is Manhattan so street noise will be there. The lunch specials were varied and interesting; I had a Dover sole while others shared a steak fritte and a pasta dish. Salads first which were fresh and well prepared. Entrees were perfect, cooked just right and sized properly. This being French food don't expect to skimp on calories but expect big flavor and precise cooking. The service was fast and attentive but not intrusive in any way. I will be back here and will say I'll go out of my way in Manhattan revisit when the weather gets warmer. read more
