TERRIBLE SERVICE. We were alone in a dining room with one other group of 4 (there were 2 of us) and it took forever for our waiter to come over and take our drink order..........and another forever to bring a vodka on the rocks which came as a vodka and soda that had to be replaced. We then ordered 2 appetizers and 2 entrees. One appetizer didn't come. The other was steamed spinach with garlic. Didn't come as an appetizer but rather as a side dish and no garlic and cold. Very good neighborhood restaurant. The steak tartar is delicious as is the guacamole and shrimp (trust me try them). Salmon is good as well. The service is friendly Not to mention the delivery is fast and everything gets to you fresh. It still has the best French Onion Soup in the UES. But, they've completely cleaned out the staff and the place lacks any charm. Nobody speaks French. There is no welcome. It is just about getting you in to get your money. I'm sure it's more dependable and a cash cow for the owner (who also opened the very average pizza place next door). I have visited Jaques many times over the years, often for dinner sometimes just for an early evening drink with a colleague. Obviously I reserve for dinner but just pop in for a drink, usually outside, without reserving. This last Friday the little man (manager?) on the desk told me that he could not seat me outside,at 5.45, without a reservation. When I asked him if this was new policy he told me it had been so for twenty years. Obviously a lie. When I questioned him he told me there many other restaurants in New York that I could go to. A decent place with good brunch options. I ordered mushroom and swiss omelet and it was fluffy,soft and delicious. It was paired with small salad and overall was more than enough food. My fiancé had eggs benedict but he was not happy with his order. He said the hollandaise sauce was salty and heavy.I have not tried it so I cant judge. I'm happy they are still operating after the pandemic and will continue to support them. I've personally never had any negative experiences here and have visited 10+ times. This is my absolute, favorite place in the area. They've got the ambiance, service, and delicious food. Dinner - Their mussels and fries (Dijonnaise) are my go-to. I've been to France numerous times and Jacques nails it when it comes to the flavor of the Marinieres as well. The fries are incredible, perfectly crispy, and just the right size. I can literally lounge around to enjoy drinks and will order the fries themselves. Lunch - I recently had the Jacques burger and it is now on my top 5 list. I'm quite picky when it comes to burgers honestly, however, it was recommended to me by one of the waiters. If you're reading this and are unsure about the blue cheese - give it a go! Do NOT substitute anything on it. Seriously. If you do and don't like it, that's on you. Get it medium rare and you will experience the harmony of flavors from the apple & blue cheese - they compliment the meat well. Quite frankly they know how to make a better burger than most burger places. Dessert - The chocolate souffle is legit. Expect to wait a bit since they prepare it fresh, as all restaurants should. My wife has had the creme brulee and she said it was great. Drinks - Their selection is OK, given that they're French they should dedicate themselves to their wines. Their wine selection is great, the best quality for the price of a cup of wine in the area. I thoroughly enjoy European dining because of the laidback atmosphere you get when you're having a great meal with friends/family without the time constraint and pushy, annoying waiters/waitresses who are watching you like a hawk to see if you've finished your plate. I know it's a cultural difference, but it makes a difference to your dining experience. Jacque has always provided a perfect experience due to their excellent service and sticking to a bit of the European etiquette. If you come for lunch with a friend just after a restaurant opens at noon, and within 15 minutes, it is full of people, does that not make a statement....but Jacques needs no help from this sort of comment. The restaurant can easily stand on its own. It is comfortable, the food is consistently excellent and the service is attentive and thorough. How could a place so described not be full of people, whether a Saturday night or as in our case, an ordinary Thursday afternoon ? I love the merguez sausages, but this time we had an excellent mushroom parpardelle. Don't worry, with such good food and reasonable prices, my friend and I are not the only ones who will be back... Went there on Father's Day- nice and short wait; however the service could have been a lot better. We waited at least an hour for all of our dishes to come out. And when they did, some of the meals were cold. Our dad had the filet mignot- which was served warm. I had the trout- also warm, but still ate it out of hunger and fear that they may pop it in the microwave to warm it up. For all of that I can do that at home. It is currently outdoor seating only and was happy to see that all staff were wearing masks and gloves the entire time. There was also a bottle of hand sanitizer on every table. We had a really nice lunch here today. Sat outside in their clear dividers Covid section. We were celebrating me being cleared for melanoma so my husband recommended we get the sangria. I'm kind of a fan of sangria. This was such a nice surprise. First of all it's frozen, so it's a lovely summer cocktail to have. But second, it's really delicious. On the wine heavy side of sangria but I liked it, it wasn't too sweet. We had two and we felt it. He had the steak frites and I had the salad Nicoise. A nice full serving and fresh ingredients. I appreciated the speedy service despite their being busy but I don't understand how they are busy.... service was without a smile and the pappardelle pasta was just sad .. limp, lifeless, flavorless. We pushed it to the side, the server asked if we wanted it boxed, we said no thank you we didn't enjoy it all. What a cute place. Came here for drinks with a girlfriend after work on a Wednesday evening. There was a decent crowd for a weekday and we were treated very nicely by the staff, even though we were much younger than the average age client here. TLDR: the average client here is 55 and your typical bougie Upper East Side crowd. We tried to order beers on tap (Hoegaarden to be exact) and the waiter suggested we order bottled beer instead because the taps were warm tonight... Thanks for being honest??? I'm glad he was honest and saved us going through ordering warm beers but at the same time, what's the point of offering draft beers on the menu if they're warm? Am I missing something? Luckily, they have a good selection of bottled beers. We got two Duvels and an order of pommes frites (worth the hype - order these!) All in all a good experience. Bathroom was clean, so A+ there. However, the inside is quite dark and old school so I wouldn't recommend it for lunch or brunch. My favorite dishes here are the moules frites and salade nicoise. I also like the roasted chicken and the bread that they serve once you are seated. The average price of an entree is $30, and the drinks are pretty expensive, but nothing too crazy for a French restaurant on the UES. Overall always a great brunch/lunch experience here. read more

Tonight was my first time eating inside. I have been here a few times before and have eaten outside. I liked the old-world decor and french posters. Our server was very polite as well as the support staff. They even escorted us to the front door afterward to hold the door open for us. You can't go wrong with the moules-frites here. I love the Provencale with the tomato broth. The Vol au Vent was perfectly flaky and cheesy with truffle oil. Mmmmm. My friend and I split everything along with some delish wine, and were full. We had ordered sauteed spinach too, but the forgot to bring it out. It was okay though, because we couldn't eat another bite. The oysters here looked good, at least the 9 year-old next to us thought so. I have never seen someone so young eat Oysters like that. Impressive.
