This place has so much history and such a dedicated customer base - make a reservation. They have limited outdoor seating, but on a summer day, it is a nice option as the inside is pretty dark and moody. My table and I split a number of dishes and oh did we have a time! Oysters - the oysters with the green sauce (I assume chimichurri) were the best and very delicious. I would choose those if you want something a little different that the regular raw oyster set-up. Assiette de Fromage - had one of the stinkiest cheeses I've ever had and I didn't hate it at all. Really lovely selection of fromages and loved the honey and nuts! Steak Tartare - there's capers in there, but just the perfect amount, in my opinion. In previous experiences its either all you can taste or they completely leave them out, so I appreciated this rendition. Pear Tart - daily special. A real standout. Seriously if I could rate this restaurant a 0, I would for the worst food and experience ever. Normally, we go to Jacques when craving French brasserie food but someone from our party had just went so we decided to try someplace new. For a mostly empty restaurant, I was dismayed and then annoyed by how often they tried to get us to order dinner and rush us through. Imagine servers hovering over you so it's impossible to ignore them and have a conversation with your guests. Then, the food came. Escargot was the tiniest pieces of meat and so bland, I didn't even want to sop up the normally yummy garlic and parsley butter you'd find at other French restaurants. My steak probably was almost the final nail but not quite. For a $70, I expect it to be cooked to the temperature I asked for...medium rare. It was so done on the outside and gray that it really wasn't edible. I think that they must have defrosted it because no way fresh beef tastes like that. When I brought it to the attention of the wait staff, they had the hostess come up. She essentially proceeded to school me on medium rare steak. There were no offers to cook me a new steak or even a simple apology that it wasn't cooked to the temperature that I had requested. Lady, I've been to French Michelin restaurants on both sides of the pond so I know my steak. It ruined our dinner. So many good restaurants in the city and in that neighborhood. The food was decent for any restaurant attempted to do French food The service was not that great - the workers and cells made a spectacle of their being a gender ambiguous person present in the restaurant. And they made a big deal about us asking for more French bread to dip in the oil, the escargot is in. My mother and I went to dinner here on my last night in New York. She's part French, and so am I, on both sides. She adores French food. I'm not a fan of some of the more quintessentially French things, like sweetbreads, calves' brains, or mussels, but I digress. The hostess was somewhat crabby, but we decided to sit outside, in the shade, on the side street. The air conditioning inside was too cold for my mother. Our server was a young, charming, and exceedingly handsome man. We ordered glasses of rosé and perused the menu. A bread basket arrived, with a generous pat of butter. The bread was flawless, but not warm. Still worth puffy allergy face. We had the bacon, leek, and Gruyère tart to start, which we shared. It's quite a generous size, and DELICIOUS. Absolutely TDF. Probably very fattening, but we didn't care. It was SO GOOD. The Mommy ordered the duck Magret, since the confit has bones. She asked if she could have it rare, and the server (whose name sadly escapes me) said that the kitchen recommends medium rare. This was a beautiful presentation of slices of duck, accompanied by potatoes. I had a mixed green salad with grilled chèvre, and a side of Lyonnaise saucisson for protein. This is not the kind of place that offers to add chicken, steak, or salmon to your salad. The salad was sublime, delicately and lightly dressed. The cheese came as a large disk in the center of the salad. The sausages, which were accompanied by Lyonnaise potatoes, were dense and flavorful. I love sausage, but usually stick to chicken sausage. This was a treat, and Quatorze excelled. We didn't have dessert, but I'm sure that it would have been wonderfully presented and swoon-worthy. read more

For those seeking a safer and more reliable French dining experience on the Upper East Side, I would look instead to places like Cafe Boulud, Orsay, or Felix--restaurants that understand that consistency and care are part of the standard, not an exception. I dined at Quatorze on the UES expecting a typical evening, but left with something far more memorable. Within hours, I had what was unmistakably food poisoning. What was more disappointing than the incident itself was the response. When I informed management, I was met with a dismissive "it must have been something else you ate"--a reflexive deflection rather than any effort to take the concern seriously. Food safety is not subjective, and neither is accountability. Restaurants earn trust not only through what they serve, but how they respond when something goes wrong. Had a wonderful birthday dinner at this little French gem on the Upper East Side. The space is beautiful, with red banquettes and vintage French posters on the walls. Service was totally on point - our waiter was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu. And the food was delicious. The menu plus the daily specials offer a lot to choose from. I started with the steak tartare, which was very good. Having recently had it at Bobby Flay's Brasserie B in Vegas, this was not on par but really tasty nonetheless. My only quibble was they loaded the plate with extremely salty waffle cut potato chips which was totally unnecessary. I spread the tartare on the rolls we were provided. My friend's appetizer was the real winner - a bacon, leek, and Gruyère tart. This was like a French egg foo young - a flaky crust with a savory, light filling. For mains, I got the brook trout, which is always on the menu, prepared with grenobloise, a sauce of browned butter, capers, parsley, and lemon - delicious! I needed to ask for extra lemon and it did need a few shakes of salt but this was a classic, very elegant French fish. It comes with a side (I chose sauteed spinach). My friend's entree was less successful. He ordered the boeuf Bourguignon, a French staple, which was made with tender short ribs over mashed potatoes. We both agreed the sauce was a bit off. Not sure if it needed something added or removed but far from the best version of this dish we've had. We split chocolate mousse for dessert, which was terrific but lacking one key topping: whipped cream! The waiter offered me a glass of sancerre on the house. Despite a few missteps, overall this is a great spot. It's not a large space but they do gangbuster business for a Wednesday night. Also, it was so refreshing that all the diners were over forty - made me feel young! Actually, the crowd is more like 60s and 70s, and obviously all refined locals. came here on a Friday night and while we had a 6 PM reservation, we were able to get in early at around 5:30 and get seated right away. it was quiet at this time but when we left it got much more crowded. the wait staff was very friendly and the ambience is a cozy french bistro vibe, great UES spot. started off with the escargot (which was a little salty and came on top of mushrooms instead of the traditional dish it is served in) and steak tartar. the beef was also a little bit too salty but still super delicious and tender, and the duck was great as well. i would definitely come back but would want to check out other french bistros in the area as well. read more

I didn't eat here so I cannot claim to know anything about the food. But if they serve it how they serve their drinks, I wouldn't be shocked to have dirty utensils, and creatures running around. We sat at the bar and the bartender was just awful. He had a TERRIBLE attitude. He left us sitting there for an extended period without greeting us, when he did finally acknowledge us he was incredibly rude. It felt as if he was purposefully being rude because of my appearance. He clearly treated me differently and I can't imagine another reason aside from appearances and his own prejudices. We watched him committing a series of what I consider health code violations. By placing olives directly on dirty bar mats washed once per evening. He poured a glass of Sancerre which was clearly old, not offered a taste. I did let management know BEFORE I left and they just oh ok. I wrote a review on another site and their reply was littered with misspellings, and a complete lack of ability to use the English language in meaningful way. I would HIGHLY recommend not coming here and caution anyone away. They only cater to an older crowd and I do believe I was discriminated against. Do yourself a favor and dine elsewhere, this place or HORRENDOUS . I am a frequent diner and I cannot believe this place is still in business and management replies to people in such a fashion. First time at the First Avenue location. The hostess was lovely. I should get the bad news out of the way first. The restaurant is really loud- our party of four had difficulty conversing. Additionally, the tables are jammed together. We were seated in the center of the restaurant. People kept bumping into us as they passed. The person at the next table was seated a foot away over my left shoulder. It was vexing not to hear my dining companions at the same time another diner was speaking so loudly right nearby. I had an excellent martini. The endive salad was very good. The terrine was yummy and I really enjoyed my beef Bourgogne. We shared a generously sized order of profiteroles for dessert. The noise and seating really detracted from our evening, to the point where I'm not sure that I would return. This is a shame, given how good the restaurant is otherwise. read more

We went for dinner on a Saturday night and had a great experience, would recommend getting a reservation as it gets crowded. We were offered to check our coats by the host, very thoughtful, and were sat on time at our table. Our server was very friendly, knowledgeable and bilingual, it was very nice to be served in our native language. She explained with details everything we asked about the menu and gave us great recommendations. We had the special crisped sweetbreads salad and the onion soup, both delicious and generous. For drinks we had 2 old fashion cocktails, even though alcohol menu have only wine or wine based drinks, they have full bar and you can order anything you like, the bartender did a great job, our drinks were well served. For mains we had the duck magret with green peppercorn sauce and the beef bourguignon. Both delicious, right size and temperature, I only wished the duck would've come with a bit more sauce but other than that, everything was perfect. For dessert we had the profiteroles filled with vanilla ice cream and an order of mint tea (natural herbs infused) both delicious and good portion as well. The dessert was enough for 2/3 people, so it's worth the price. The bill came down to $212 with service and tip. So it's definitely pricy but it was worth it because we were celebrating a special occasion. I would definitely come back and would recommend everyone looking for traditional great French cuisine to go and pick anything of their menu, everything was delicious, and from what I saw in other tables we might need to come again to try more things because everything looked soooo good. Oversalted, greasy, poor value for the price. Majorly regret coming here. Skip and splurge elsewhere. There are way more satisfying French restaurant out there at this price point. Escargot was extremely salty, greasy, and tasteless with large chunks of peppercorn shells and garlic skin interrupting every other bite. Duck magret was pre sliced-- but there will little chunks of bone you had to tease and spit out. The overwhelming flavor was salt and grease again. Everything was accompanied by home fries. Romantic night out with my boyfriend. We had a heavenly meal. Quatorze has a laid back, but classy atmosphere, and the food is divine. Highly recommend the duck magret, as well as the boeuf bourguignon, which is SO tender it melts in your mouth. I had foie gras for the first time in years when I learned it was ethically sourced from farms that do not force feed their ducks. Also enjoyed their roasted oysters dabbed with pesto. It is a very unwelcoming restaurant. I don't recommend it if you are not already (or intend to become) a regular. You will be given time restrictions, you will be treated differently than the tables around you, you'll be rushed. I've been to the restaurant at least 10 times, and when I'm with a regular or otherwise recognized it's a nice experience... but when the host thinks your not a regular it's just an awful money grab. Borderline belittling. The food is fine, but you just have to have a really thick skin and not care about being treated like absolute scum while you are given the opportunity to eat it. Last night Quatorze refused to honor a twice confirmed dinner reservation at 7:45. Upon arrival, the rude and unapologetic host said she would not be able to seat us then -- or any time that evening. She blamed the weather, which is ridiculous. They overbooked. Although I have dined there many times over the years, I won't be returning to a restaurant that doesn't honor confirmed reservations and neither should you. The whole experience of dining at Quatorze is about warmth, authenticity and delicious food. We were seated a wonderful table -- and mind you, nothing about this restaurant is cramped or says we want to rush you through your meal. We ordered appetizers to share and were delighted with the yummy selections of delicious soup, the goat cheese and eggplant cold pairing and wonderful flatbread. The portions were generous and we were thrilled over the crusty bagette. From the duck confit, which was cooked to a crisp, and the savory roast chicken to the salmon and the cheeseburger, everything was consumed and enjoyed to perfection. Most important, i could HEAR my entire conversation with the table, no straining or shouting. And the crowd was buzzy with lots of young folks who were all engaged in the experience. My go to restaurant on the UES. The space is absolutely beautiful but more importantly food, wine, and staff are always on point.

Hard to overstate how good our lunch was. The wine list is excellent and not too expensive (the chilled Beaujolais was an excellent addition). I had a pate to start that was very tasty and the calf's liver (rare to find on menus these days) was perfect and tender. The service was generous without being intrusive and the ambiance was welcoming. I will definitely make this a New York City go to! read more

When we arrived at the restaurant for our 6:30 PM reservation the only table available was next to the bar in a small space next to the window. We were completely isolated from the restaurant and the people talking at the bar were loud enough so we ccould not have a comversation. The hostess was very unhelpful (she did not offer us to wait at the bar for a better table). another couple arriving after us was immediately shown to a table. Eventually upon our insistence we finally got a table in the dining room. Now the food: the appetizers were adequate but the entrées downright terrible. My wife ordered trout which arrived over cooked -she immediately told this to the waiter who took it away and lo and behold the hostess came back with the trout put it in front our noises and said what's wrong with this in a very hostile way. Replied "overcook" her answer was look at the juice surrounding the trout but she took it away (my wife declined to have any further dish). When I ordered calfs liver I know and was told it was very thin. I very clearly asked the waiter is it possible to get this rare if not I will order something else please check with the chef. You know the answer and it arrived well done - the bacon was unrecognizable as bacon and it was covered in some kind of sauce. After the experience with the fish I didn't dare send my liver back. Finally we ordered an apple Tartan . The apples were undercooked and it was a very undesirable dessert. We could not wait to leave - forever. read more
