Bonjour! I enjoyed the French Onion Soup very much. Nice flavor, and the cheese-pull factor we all want to see. Mmmm. Yummy. In hot weather, my appetite lessens and today, Tuesday, July 15, 2025, was one of those hot days. A hot and humid day. Therefore, as much as I wanted to try other yummy-sounding items from the menu, my appetite just wasn't there. It was perfectly satisfied with the French Onion Soup, and the warmed bread with butter. I look forward to returning to try more from the menu. I want to try the salads; the roasted beets salad with other favorite ingredients (of mine) like toasted almonds, sheep cheese, sliced apples...I can't wait! See my menu photos. I shall happily update as I try more from the menu, which I expect to be soon. There are many items I want to try. Ambiance and Service- very pleasant, all around . There are several tables outside, too. The unisex rest room is cool and clean. Nice artwork and ac. On First Avenue, between 58th and 59th Streets, you will find two very nice and yummy good, French Restaurants. I like both of them. I've tried the French Onion Soup at each, and I'm happy with each one. If you're able to make a reservation, I'd say it's a good idea. I have walked by, and each restaurant has been busy. But if you're dining spur-of-the-moment, try that too. As word-of-mouth spreads, I think these two French restaurants may be challenging to get into, so go now!! And, then, also go later. Enjoy.

Les Vagabonds truly delivers. We kicked things off with the escargot, an absolute must-order. Rich, garlicky, and indulgent. I went with the lamb chops, which were a special that evening, and they were cooked beautifully. My friend had the seafood paella and was equally impressed. The ambiance is cozy and intimate, with just the right amount of charm. The service was exceptional and friendly. A fantastic neighborhood gem! Easily one of the best French spots in the neighborhood. Looking forward to coming back!

One of my favorite restaurants in the Sutton Place area, service is always good, everyone is always friendly, cute dining area keeping a lot of the decor of the former French restaurant. The grilled hangar steak was supposed to be served medium rare as suggested by our waiter, but it was well done when it arrived, even so, it was super tender and delicious, the French fries were very good, food temperature could have been a little warmer, but it's a relatively new restaurant and still a wonderful place to have dinner. The chef is trying, as mentioned in an earlier review, it's a modern take on the classic dish, our guest enjoyed it. The desserts, we ordered three, the chocolate mousse was very good, the creme brulee too cake like and really disappointed with the berries and cream, maybe one teaspoon of blueberries and whipped cream, definitely not worth ordering.

Les Vagabonds has become my go to for delicious food and spectacular service. I love the endive salad, the scallops, lamp chops and beef bourgiugnon. The ambiance is so relaxing! I highly recommend this restaurant. Oh dont forget desert!

TUNA TARTARE ESCARGOT

We came here for Valentine's Day. Really lovely meal. Great service and good vibe. Tuna tartare was fresh and interesting. Really great portion sizes on the entrees. Highly recommend the duck ala orange. Definitely would come again.

I love the mirrors and the menus written on them. The greeters were GREAT. Very welcoming and pleasant. We were seated quickly at a corner table with a great view of the restaurant. Our waitress was cordial, kinda business like. It took a while to get drinks ordered. They took our orders - I got the Branzino and my wife ordered the price fixe. The French onion soup she got as her first course was delightful! So rich, beautifully done!!! That was the high point. The branzino when they brought it out they spilled a decent bit of the sauce on my wife's foot (she was in sandals). No real apology and no one offered to give her anything to clean up. The branzino was ok. Nothing to write home about. My wife got the chicken - WAAAAAY over-fried. Dry as a bone. Mashed potatoes and hericots verts on her dish were delish! Profiteroles for dessert were good as well. It was an ok meal but not worth the price. Probably would not return.

I had a 7pm reservation, but was running late, and they were flexible and told me to come any time. Upon my arrival, I was seated by the piano. The pianist playing that night, Andrew Abrahamsen, was very talented. He played an eclectic mix of songs, including "I Will Survive," Disney's "When You Wish Upon a Star," and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." As the night went on, he played Happy Birthday for me, and went on a 90s Disney Renaissance spree, playing songs including "Go the Distance" from Hercules, "Out There" from Hunchback of Notre Dame, "Beauty and the Beast," and "You've Got a Friend in Me" from Toy Story. Ordered black tiger shrimp for my entree. It smelled wonderful, and especially peppery once the waiter added pepper to it. The risotto the shrimp sat on was also very delicious. I ended up taking this to go, and it still tasted great later on! For dessert, I chose the lemon tart brûlée with raspberry sorbet. It came with "Happy Birthday" written on the plate with chocolate, and a candle on the sorbet. As always, the ambiance and decor is very beautiful, with portraits of Josephine Baker to honor the revolutionary badass woman. Thanks for the great birthday dinner, Chez Josephine!

This place is quite packed every night so it was the way to go. I came here for dinner post showtime and my son and I over ordered but happily enjoyed everything. I think our eyes are way bigger than our stomachs. Starters: - French onion soup, au gratin, was perfect. Great onion profile and lots of it. Not overly salty so that was good. - Beef tartare, classic French bistro staple, must order this. The portion was quite generous and it was delicious. We couldn't stop eating it. The petite toasts were a nice accompaniment as well as the raddiccio salad - cheese board, IYKYK, I never met a cheese I didn't like. This board was matched with nice pairings. Think grapes, fig jam, and marcona almonds. The cheese were a classic French variety - bleu, comte and brie. For our entrees, my son opted for a sandwich and I got the steak. His croque Madame was really delicious. The bread, the ham, the baked cheese and the fried egg was so savory. Yummy. My steak was a sizeable portion but I purposely ordered the bigger ounces since I know we'd share. Fries are nice and skinny, perfectly seasoned. Our waiter was attentive and I asked for the table next to us given all the food I know we were getting. He was not sure if he could accommodate but I insisted he check with management. They came over and put it together for me. I appreciated that given a table for two, for how much we ordered, it'd never fit. Totally would return. If you like French food, this is a solid spot to try.

The app activated the swipe button shortly after 5PM -- which Maman and several other stores have recently started allowing as an early pickup signal. I went to the store accordingly. The young male Hispanic employee at the register refused to hand over my bag, insisting the pickup window didn't start until 5:15. All the bags were already packed and ready. There were no other customers in line. I tried to explain how the app works and that early pickup had been allowed here before, but he repeatedly cut me off. At one point I said "if you want to play by the book, so be it" -- meaning it as a neutral acknowledgment. He took offense, raised his voice, and kept repeating "I don't play, you play" in an increasingly hostile tone. I asked if he understood the expression. He just kept repeating "I don't play." When I asked to speak with a manager, he said there wasn't one. When I asked what a customer is supposed to do when there's a problem with an employee, he told me to come back tomorrow and talk to him. This was completely avoidable. The bags were ready. It was a 5-10 minute window, allowed by the app. The confrontation served no purpose. I noticed the review posted the day before mine mentions "poor customer service at the register" -- I suspect we encountered the same person. Maman has a good reputation worth protecting. I'd encourage management to review this interaction and make sure this particular staff is trained properly.

(This didn't affect me since on my first visit I only ordered soup.) Same thing happened this time, and there was a significant delay between our soup/salad course and entrees. We were told the kitchen was backed up. this is apparently the norm. For appetizers, the French onion soup was a gold star dish. My friend had the goat cheese salad which she said was also very good. The Chicken Cordon Bleu was good, and a hard-to-find dish in NYC. While eating our entrees, the server never checked on how things were or if we needed anything. Once finished, we sat there for a long time waiting for our plates to be cleared, and finally had to "announce" that we were done and request our dessert (as we had ordered the prix fixe menu). For dessert we ordered the Dame Blanche and Profiteroles. I would recommend neither. The ice cream (in both) was poor quality, crystallized and not creamy. A real shame. In all, the meal too 2.5 hours due to the slow service. The soup remains fantastic. I'm downgrading my review to recommend this spot only for soup and salad and not a full, hours-long meal.
