My Husband and I found the property that Mike Starr was managing through his tenants, a military family, who was trying to end their lease early, and wanted someone to take it over. We were happy to take over the lease time, because we needed a place, and we liked the idea of living on the Resort. The first problem that we had was not with Mike, who was on vacation, but with Pi'ilani Sorrells. She was very rude and lied to us telling us we couldn't have the property, because she wanted someone she knew to get it. We were even told by the other tenant that they were receiving threats from Pi'ilani and the other people who wanted the home, saying that they were high ranking officers in the military and that they would call her husband's commander about the matter. That should have been our sign to just leave the property, but because Pi'ilani was not the property manager, and we thought we would give Mike Starr a chance.
When we finally met Mike Starr for the first time he was very nice to us, even apologizing for what happened with Pi'ilani. We moved in on the 20th of Oct. and it was not up to our standards of cleanliness. There was food stuck to the cabinets, dirty bathrooms, blown out light bulbs, broken window screens, holes and scuff marks on the walls, etc. My husband and I took days cleaning, filling holes, painting, and scrubbing the carpets to have the place look good. The first time I went to do the laundry the washing machine stopped working, with the water and the clothes still in it, so we called Mike to have someone come and look at it. Mike Starr told us that we probably didn't know how to use the machine, which we went along with because he did say it was tricky when we moved in. So a young man came to look at the machine and drain the smelly (in Hawaii sitting water gets stinky fast!) water out of it. The man said it was either that the door to the washer wasn't locking properly or that the machine was bad and that it would need to be replaced. So he fixed the lock and left. About a week later we went to do the laundry again, and the machine stopped. We tried to call Mike Starr, and his secretary said she would give him the message. The next day there was still no call back and the smell from the washer was getting pretty bad. My husband called and emailed Mike for the next couple of days and there was no reply. Finally we were fed up with Mike not returning our calls so my husband called again and told the secretary that we were going to go ahead and buy a new washer and take that amount out of the rent. (Which is within landlord tenant law) About two minutes later Mike Starr called my husband back yelling. Mike said that we shouldn't be threatening him and that my husband made the secretary cry from his statement. He also said that the machine worked for the previous tenant, and that this was a bad way to start out a lease, almost making it seem like we were lying about the machine not working.
Mike scheduled the same man to come out and look at the machine again, which took a couple more days, and he told us that the machine needed to be replaced. By this time we had this broken machine with water in it for about a week and a half. Finally Mike bought us a new machine, but this too was a problem. Mike told us that we would have the washer delivered from Sears some time between 8am to 9pm. This sounded strange to us but I sat all day long waiting for them to show up, which never happened. The next morning I called Sears myself and they told me that there was never a delivery scheduled for the day before, and that they give a 4 hour window for delivery, not a 13 hour window. When the washer was finally delivered Mike came over and walked straight into the house without asking and was extremely rude and defensive about the incident. He never apologized about anything! When it was all done it took about 2 and a half weeks to get a washing machine that worked!
We didn't hear from Mike for a couple of months until the owners of the property wanted to have some mail from the DMV and the Social Security Office mailed to our address. We told Mike that we didn't feel comfortable with this because of the importance of the paperwork, and we didn't think that the DMV and Social Security Office would mail this type of paperwork to strangers. We repeatedly asked Mike to have the owners have the mail sent to their own home address in California, not their rental. Mike again was very rude with us and told me to "Just give him the mail!"
After these incidents we never heard form Mike Starr again! Not even when we moved out! He had is partner Deborah, who was very nice, deal with us. The final jab from them was when they wanted to charge us for some light bulbs and a water filter that didn't even work when we moved in! We didn't pay for it!
I would never recommend this company, especially Mike Starr, to anyone! He is extremely unprofessional and rude!!! read more
