We've been meaning to stop by for a while but couldn't justify the relatively longer drive. This morning, we decided to stop by on our way to our obligatory monthly COSTCO run in The Villages. Located in what looked like a motel that's seen better days, we walked into a clean albeit cozy interior. We were instructed to sit wherever and we sat in a booth. Presented with the menu, we both ordered coffee. My wife then ordered their Biscuit and Gravy ($6.99 if paid in cash) and I ordered their Bacon and Cheese Omelet with onions ($9.99 cash), home fries and wheat toast. My wife liked her breakfast. The gravy was nice and peppery and the biscuit seemed fresh and held up to the gravy. My omelet was also good. I preferred my home fries crispier though. Service was on point as we never saw the bottom of our coffee cup with servers attentively refilling our cups! You could tell there are many regulars who patronize this place that's been in operation for over 25 years. It seemed like the servers knew a lot of the diners...and that's a good thing. Good food, great value and friendly, attentive service. Breakfast for 2 with tip came out to $30 paid in cash since paying with a credit card incurs additional charge.

I ordered the Smashburger special, which came with fries and coleslaw. I paid extra for sweet potato fries. My burger had two thin hand patted pieces of beef with cheese, lettuce, pickles and tomato. The burger was hot, juicy and delicious! And all the fixins were fresh. The coleslaw had more of a vinegar flavor which I liked. And the sweet potato fries were piping hot and yummy! The fried catfish was breaded with cornmeal, perfectly crispy, also well seasoned and very moist and tender inside. The tartar sauce was homemade and very good but they also have a good peppered vinegar. Between us all we had an opportunity to try a lot of sides. Hush puppies which one of our hush puppy lovers said was the best she ever had (I'm not a fan of these overall so I can't really say). The potato salad was very good, creamy, with just a hint of onion and relish. Baked potatoes and sweet potatoes were enjoyed by all. Loved the crispy okra and green beans. Collard greens were also good. Of course, we couldn't leave without trying the pies. Caramel apple walnut was a little too nutty for me but it was still good. They key lime was my personal fave -- the crust was a good crumbly graham cracker that was definitely home made. We also had a lemon meringue and the chocolate coconut cream pie, which was essentially a half and half with chocolate cream and the bottom and coconut cream on the top. Both had beautiful, moist meringues with nicely toasted tops. On top of good food, we had a great waitress who was super attentive and very patient and friendly. Northgate wasn't on her list of restaurants to try out but we were intrigued by the positive reviews. From the outside, Northgate was showing its age. The menu indicated they opened in 2002 and it probably needs some updating...including the prices on the menu. The parking lot was quite full...a great sign! Our first impressions were that service was friendly and there seemed to be quite a lot of regulars who dine here as we heard a lot of conversations indicating familiarity. We were told to sit anywhere and we chose a booth. My wife and I ordered coffee and water to start out...their coffee mugs are quite big and they are attentive with refills. I ordered the Western Omelet with home fries and wheat toast and my wife ordered the Farmer's Omelet with tater tots and wheat toast. Breakfast was good with generous portions...both of us took home leftovers which was still good the next morning. All in all, a very good breakfast place (they also serve lunch) that we would likely return to. We thought the value was there. Lunch for 2 less tip was just over $30. The atmosphere in the restaurant is just absolutely amazing. It takes you back to the days when cafés were cafés. The relics on the wall are not the ones you find made in Japan and shipped in for decor. The real handmade type relics or hand-painted. The place is very patriotic and just a pleasure to be there. Everyone in the place seem so friendly that even though it was our first visit, we felt like it was home. I would recommend this establishment to absolutely anybody traveling through the area. I know it won't be my last trip. In fact, I'd say it will be my first of many.
