PappaRoti does some really cute, really good buns, very well-made and with a great selection of flavours, toppings, varieties and whatnot. The drinks selection is not bad, either, and this is definitely a place where you can have a great lunch or just a charming snack. It also has absolutely no sound-absorbing surfaces anywhere in its main seating area. It's all naked floor, blank walls and sharp angles, which makes it VERY NOISY when even half full. No kidding, the last time I was in there a fire truck screamed past and we barely heard it. You'll likely find this a lovely place to hang out with people, but not somewhere to enjoy quiet time or get much work done. I also feel compelled to mention that their taste in music is terrible. I'm sorry, but it's really awful. Awful things like overtwee modern folk or weirdly embellished covers of Bob Dylan sung in that late 90s/early 00s grunge style where every syllable becomes "urrr." Your mileage may vary, so consider this a four star rating if you don't mind noise and appreciate really good buns, or a two star rating if atmosphere and comfort matter a lot to you. I've gone for three stars because I'm trying my best here to be diplomatic and, also, because I ultimately hope my attitude can help build bridges between people in the difficult years ahead. I was super upset with their service considering how much during covid19 we are trying to prevent the spread. The cashier didn't wash her hands, handled the boxes, touched the inside and didn't bother wearing a glove till halfway, she was touching her hair, her face and all the items of the boxes, it was so gross and when I mentioned it to her she was like okay and kept doing what she was doing didn't have any regard for sanitary reasons. What I did appreciate is she understood that we were upset and gave us our money back. read more

Where were you all my life, PappaRoti?! Surrounded by Korean and Japanese restaurants and tucked away along the western slopes of Robson street, this corner-lot café easily became my go-to place for snacks and tea. Their advertised buns are baked to perfection: crispy and flaky on the outside, soft and gooey on the inside. Best topping to pair them with? Personally, that's a toss up between Nutella and maple syrup. If you're looking for a hot drink, I would recommended trying the Pappa Karak milk tea at least once. Black tea, condensed milk and a hint of ginger - something I can't resist! The café itself is spacious, well-lit, and clean. More importantly, the staff (and owners) are both friendly and sociable, AND there's free WiFi! Need a new place to study, students? I only wish PappaRoti would remain open after 11pm because I can't get enough of this place! P.S. If a bun fails to satisfy your hunger, or if you're into something savoury, their chicken sandwich is a must-try. read more

I'm not sure about other people, but when my friend said we were going to Papparoti for a snack, I thought I was in for some good flatbread & assorted sides. So when I got there, I was looking at their menu, seeing their teas, buns and sandwiches, and I still wondered where their hot savoury dishes were - the worker had to point out to me that roti is a sweet coffee bun :P It was one of the best things I tasted, so I brought another friend here last night. Even she had no idea what Papparoti served this stuff, based on their name. Anyhow, their buns are amazingly good - coffee cream baked on top of the sweet bun, with a super toasty crispy exterior, and melt-in-your-mouth interior, and a little lump of butter melted into everything. I think this bun is addicting on its own, but it is so incredibly good with Nutella! Pricing for the buns *are* a bit steeper, thats why I'm knocking a star off. It seems as though the price was $4 during 2014, but when I went yesterday, it was something like $3.50, plus a topping for $1.25 (compared to last year's pricing of $1.50). I also had a medium soy lavender latte (cost $5.xx), which I left mostly unfinished.. it tasted a bit like lavender, not in a nice way (somewhat..bitter??), but I didn't enjoy the drink at all. My friend got a regular latte, and she said it was one of the worst she's ever had :/ Maybe I'll stick with a pot of tea next time. Anyway, my evening drink and snack ended up being over $10, which is pretty steep. I'm a sucker for rotis of all kinds, so I was sort of weirdly disappointed that PappaRoti had buns and not flatbreads. But still, I went in... The space is an airy and bright cafe, including a big communal table. Quite busy with people camped out with laptops, probably taking advantage of the free WiFi (password "karaktea"). It's also quite big, and if you go deeper, there's shadier seating. Service was mixed. The counter girl manning the till was surly and maybe slightly hard of hearing. The European-looking gentleman was more professional -- and I really liked the fact that he intercepted my order of the Chocoliva topping to give me a sample first, saying that his own experience hadn't been what he expected at all. It definitely was a different flavour, so I really appreciated his concern and consideration. Karak Tea ($3.80 small, $4.95 large) Originating in South Asia, this specialty tea is brewed with aromatic Indian spices and herbs. Combined with condensed milk, cardamom and freshly ground ginger, this tea was made specifically for PappaRoti Cafes. -Had a promising ginger aroma, but turned out terribly disappointing -- like a weak chai with somewhat weak ginger flavor. Definitely no ginger burn. -As for a spoon and STIR! Found out too late that a good portion of the condensed milk had settled at the bottom. Bun + 1 topping ($4.75) Bun + 2 toppings ($6.00) -I went with the chocoliva topping, which I found only on the TV screen above the order counter. It's one of the rotating ads. --Curious flavour to try -- not super-chocolatey, and has a touch of olive oil flavour, but also not very powerful. So you get some chocolate flavour, but it's not too rich. --Overall I'd recommend just going for chocolate and using less instead of this weird chocolate + olive oil concoction. Maybe ask for a sample before you commit. -It doesn't look like they give you a lot of topping, but it's actually more than enough. --You could try just having one person get a topping and then sharing it. --Using any of the toppings kind of kills the natural flavour of the bun, which is already quite good. Perfectly good on its own with a coffee or something. -The bun itself is very nice. Comes toasty warm, and has a delicious sweet-but-not-too-sweet crust. --Inside it's so fluffy! Overall fun to eat except for the crumbs. --As a unique treat it's great the first time but the price point really deters going again except to bring a Papparoti virgin there. There are other cheaper or similarly-priced options. What PappaRoti has is uniqueness. read more

Completely underwhelming and overpriced. I had a regular bun with cream cheese "topping" - firstly the tiny buns are $4 for something similar to chinese bakery buns (which normally cost $1), and the tiny plastic condiment container of cream cheese on the side was $1.50 (about 1 tablespoon of cream cheese). Now the bun - I bit into it to find a. huge air pocket taking up 1/3 volume (paying for air...) b. two huge pats of greasy half melted margarine/shortening in the bottom. Unsure if that was how it was supposed to be, I tasted the grease blobs and they were awful, the flavor of cheap margarine or shortening. I should have taken pictures but ended up just throwing half the bun out because it was inedible. They must use a lot of fat in those buns!! $5.50 for bad bread, basically. I'd rather spend the money on an artisan loaf from Terra Breads or a (less expensive) high quality pastry from Thomas Haas! read more

Roti buns in Vancouver? Finally! Delicious buns, beautiful decor, but it's a bit on the pricey end though. If you haven't tried a roti bun before, it's like a glorified dinner roll, but much much better. Also, there are a variety of flavours to choose from (when in doubt, go with the original) and it's absolutely amazing when it is fresh from the oven. I enjoy coming over here for a bun and a chai when I am feeling down and low or confused by the hustle bustle of downtown. I always find it fortifying and delicious. However, the last few times, I have felt the buttery centre of the bun shrinking and the edges becoming dry. Please don't take this comfort away from me. I came across PappaRoti at Robson St. when I needed to look for a café to study and work on my assignment. This place has 'Cozy' and 'Delicious' written all over it! With the weather cloudy and slightly chilly, I felt a lot warmer the moment I took a step into this café. I went there around 1:00, so there weren't that many people, although it started getting crowded by 3:00-ish (Yes, I did stay there for about 2 hours). The servers were friendly and approachable, so I didn't feel as anxious when ordering. I ordered a Green Matcha Tea, with a Pecan Tart. Although I knew that their speciality is the buns, I decided to try it next time I came here. The green tea had a very strong taste, which is how I like my green tea, but I do feel that the server could've diluted the Matcha flavour a little bit more. On the other hand, their Pecan Tart was absolutely delicious! It was my first time eating pecan tarts, not to mention pecan nuts itself, but the first bite of the pie was mindblowing. The pecan nuts covered the surface of the pecan nuts paste (I think it was pecan nuts paste) which was a perfect combination with the cookie-like textured tart crust, and dark chocolate that was dipped halfway through the tart. The butter (from the crust) and bittersweet and nutty-sweet flavour were harmonious so that one flavour didn't dominate the other. With the cozy interior of PappaRoti and a heartwarming tart, I was able to fully focus on my work. I will most certainly come back here again to study and to just simply relax while enjoying my beverage and buns :) read more

My fiance and I were just strolling around robson street and happened to stumble upon Papa Roti. We were both pleasantly surprised by these buns! I highly recomend trying the original bun and pairing it with their original hot karak tea. These coffee buns that were crispy on the outside and soft and airy on the inside. Subtle sweet notes followed by a hints of butter. It was the perfect amount of crispy, soft, sweet, salty, airy deliciousness all wrapped into this bun. The original Karak tea is also very Good, but I tried one of the iced flavored ones that my fiance had and I wasn't a huge fan. Other than that, I highly recommend this place :) read more

Worth a visit if you're in the West End. Talking to the baristas, this is the first outpost of a chain based out of Malaysia. And they've got some great things. They're known for their buns, which are unlike anything I've really had before. Being filipino, I would probably liken their bun to a lighter version of Pan De Sal. It comes out nice and warm, crispy on the outside, with sweet, soft dough on the inside. There's a salted butter "filling" in the center, which is a nice counterpoint to the sweetness of it. It's topped with powdered sugar, and I noticed they put powdered cocoa on the bottom of the tray, which I guess adds additional flavor, though I didn't really care much for it. You can get toppings, like nutella or strawberries, for an additional price. I also had their Karak tea, which is a black tea, with different spices including cardamon, as well as condensed milk. I first tried this place in Dubai, U.A.E. When I stumbled upon this in Vancouver, I lost my mind. I obsessively re.ember the coffee buns. But never did I try it with their toppings. Oh what deliciousness! Slightly caramel crisped edges with a soft buttery inside. Goes great with a matcha latte. I am making this a stop whenever we drive up from Seattle. Even if it is a trip to Whistler. The turkey cranberry brie sandwhich was also heavenly. Such savory addictions for café snacks. Nice atmosphere to do work in as well. There is another PappaRoti in Coquitlam although it doesn't seem to be on yelp. It is a new one I think. Part of a much larger building so it doesn't stand out much. Located right at an intersection corner. I think it was located at Glen and Pinetree Way. I am going to give my review for the Coquitlam café. I found that it was very clean and spacious. Quite nice actually. Fairly quiet other then a little background music. Not very busy when I went. The food had healthy options -gluten free. However it was expensive. It cost nearly $5 for a hot chocolate. It wasn't customized like at Starbucks. It also wasn't a very large cup. It was pretty small actually. About $9 for a sandwich. The service was basic and polite. On the plus side you could easily move a stroller around in there. I could see moms going there with strollers although not sure if there was a change table. I saw this place on the front page of Yelp on April 6th. I appreciate that they're open late making it accessible for anyone, working class and not to enjoy this place. I will admit that I had pictured a different concept, however, that's not to say that what I came in for was a bad thing. To me these weren't "roti buns" but rather sweet buns. Didn't taste or get any indication that these were specifically roti buns. You pay $4 for a plain bun and then approx $1.50 extra for a topping that is served on the side in a cup. A little overpriced for $5.50 considering that I've had other buns in the city (called different things but same texture and shape) for a far more reasonable price. The cafe itself was large, clean and welcoming. Lots of seating and space to catch up with friends. It was good to try once but nothing that I would go out of my way for to do again. read more

Ordered a nutella and banana bun and it was delicious! The buns are slightly crispy on the outside and light and flaky on the inside. The nutella and banana complemented the sweetness of the bun really well. The cafe was pretty full when we arrived at around 10pm, but thanks to Angela's cunning ways we managed to snag some seats! Ran over here from our AirBnB because I figured I could use the exercise before stuffing my face with bread...and it was completely worth it. I got a single bun and the chocolate banana filled one! Both probably would've been better if I ate it fresh, but they were still really good. The texture of the bun is something I've never had before, they look super puffy but then collapses into almost a danish consistency. I wasn't the biggest fan of the salted butter flavor with the single classic bun...but it's also because I don't really like butter and wasn't really expecting that LOL the chocolate banana one was amazing though!! They're pretty rich and filling, I had half of each and I'm pretty full because of all the butter. I havent been on yelp in a while, and thought i would share my thoughts on this place. I love coming here to do some quick work on my laptop or hangout with a friend I havent seen in a while. The layout of the place is so trendy, and the staff are always so nice. They're really open to talk to, and pretty down to earth. The food is great. I love how they offer alot of gluten free food, since their main dish is a hot coffee bun with melted butter inside that can be customized with different toppings. If your not sure what kind of tea/coffee to order, i recommend the karak tea, since they're known for it and it tastes great. Anyway, love this place read more

I was excited to hear that pappa roti was opening in Vancouver having tried it at other cities that I have visited before. The buns are slightly overpriced but the ambiance makes up for it. Why the 3 stars...the owner (a young lady) micromanages her staff in front of customers. On three different occasions, she'd step in while one of her staff was helping us out and would just take over. She comes across as rude,a "know it all", and leave her staff looking really bad in front of customers making the customer experience awkward. I'm usually excited when I see a young entrepreneurial person leading a successful business but if she keeps doing this, I won't be recommending this cute lil joint to any of my friends or family. read more

In town for a few days and saw the reviews so had to go try this place. "Oh my buns" yes this place reminds of of oh my buns in L.A. same sort of concept so needless to say it's delicious here. If you are in town take the walk it's not to far from our hotel (about 15 mins). We ordered "the works" ice cream, whipped cream, strawberries and bananas. Lately there's been a buzz going about their ice cream roti bun. Having tried their bun, I was excited to have them stuffed with ice cream. I got to try the vanilla version and it was topped with fruit loops. The bun itself was great as usual and the ice cream didn't change the texture of the bun which I liked. You know, how people do churros with ice cream or ice cream donut, it's just not the same when eaten separated. Paparoti did a great job at maintaining both items the way they should be. What I didn't like were the fruit loops and thought it was unnecessary. Maybe it's just to add extra flare to what may look like a simple bun with ice cream in the middle. Water taste like bleach? Health hazard? This place also attracts large families who bring their other families, spouse (2nd / 3rd spouses / multiple marriages?) and kids, lots of cribs and kids. This place is not fit to be in downtown Vancouver is they are catering to rural type customers. My suggestion: remove the large tables, get smaller tables, play loud hip hop or dance music, korean / asian music is a plus. You will get more customers who leave fast, buy more, spend more, rather than families lounging and not buying much. read more

Amazing buns! You can small the sweet aroma as you walk by! I don't always get a warm reception, as long as they are still cordial. All times I've been here, it's been relatively quiet, but this place can get noisy. When the music volume is cranked up, everyone tries to talk above the music. read more

Delicious!! Stumbled upon Papa roti after a coworker recommended that we HAD to try it! Have to admit didn't think I would be able to finish the entire bun especially after having a full bowl of ramen for lunch. But I ordered the maple syrup with vanilla ice cream roti with a small coffee anyway! Bite by bite this amazing salty and sweet roti disappeared without any effort! It's delicious on its own! I could have done without the additional sides but who can resist ice cream? Will definitely come back to take some home next time! Not to mention, service was fabulous! The coffee bun was dry and the outer layer reminded me of sandpaper. I've had FAR better at other places in the city. The "Sour Cherry" Jam just tasted like Cherry. However, sandwich was good, but made off site by another company. As for the service? VERY poor. It seemed like my desire to purchase food was an inconvenience for the staff. The employees look like they just woke up and is really hard to get at smile out of them. Me and my family were verbally assaulted by one of the male "supervisors" at the Robson store while we were eating the buns and coffee we had just purchased a few minutes prior. The supervisor didn't like the fact that I complained about them getting our order wrong 3 times. He came outside where we were eating yelling at me saying things like "you're lucky you were inside when you were talking to me other wise I would've...." he also told me and my family to "go back to where we came from" and when I told him I was from Vancouver he said "good because I always remember a face" and he made a gesture as if he was going to hurt me if he saw me again. I complained to Papa Roti and to their credit they were very quick to reply back to me and take care of the situation. However, all they did to the employee was a slap on his wrist and offered me 4 buns for my inconvenience next time I go there. I would never go back to a place where you can be a racist and get a slap on the wrist. Where you as an employee can threaten to physically harm a paying customer while they are consuming the products they had just purchased. I would be very wary to step foot in their door again knowing one of their "supervisors" displays such a violent and racist behaviour towards their clients and gets a slap in the wrist. read more

Finally went into the store myself after having a couple of their signature coffee buns that my sister brought home, and thank god I did it because now it is one of my favourite dessert places in downtown. The buns taste excellent and the interior design of the store is romantic and vintage. I would definitely recommend for dates or girls' hangouts. read more
