I want to give this place five stars but one incident ruined it all for me.
Was looking for brunch with a friend, we were in the area from out of town. We found this place online and it looked cool so we went in.
As everyone says, the kitschy Pee Wee's Playhouse-esque decor is lots of fun. The menu is expansive, if a little overpriced.
However the first page of the menu is a kind of aggressive set of rules that I guess they are trying to pass off in a fun way, but it just takes you aback right away as kind of bitchy. Lots of minimum order amounts and stuff. It also points out that you won't have a specific server, but more like everyone attending to your table, and tips are pooled.
However we did seem to have a "main" server, who we liked a lot. I can't tell you her name, but she was heavily tattooed and she was very kind and friendly and fun.
We ordered tea, coffee, cranberry juice, the crab and artichoke dip, a milkshake, an omelette, and the "Macho Nachos". It's the latter where things went to shit.
I LOATHE avocado. The very smell and taste and texture of it makes me wretch. So I was very clear that I wanted the guacamole on the side, so I could give it to my friend to put on her toast.
But when the food was delivered - by a different server - there the guac was, right on my nachos. In a big scooped lump, but with drips of it all over other parts of the dish.
So I pointed this out and of course she ran it back to the kitchen, took away the lump, and brought out the same plate. And at this point I was already disgusted. Like, basically my choice was to eat it and deal or not eat. There was no time to re-do the dish. And my stomach was already turned on the entire meal because of it.
So this is when things really flipped, because a third server came over and she was just kind of godawful and rude. She was HYPER AGGRESSIVE about the whole thing, making *me* feel like *I* was being unreasonable. She's like "The chicken on it is fine! We don't have to recook the chicken, so we can just go back, remove the chicken, redo the nachos which won't take any time at all, and bring it back out!"
And I was like... I guess? So she disappears and comes back 90 seconds later with a "new" plate of nachos. Because apparently she thinks I'm an idiot.
I mean yes, it doesn't take a long time to do a plate of nachos, but it takes more than 90 seconds to plate chips, cheese, olives, sour cream, salsa, beans, etc... etc... etc... and then transfer over chicken. They obviously just picked over the plate they already had done for anything that looked like it had residual guac on it, rustled things around, and brought out the same plate.
I just didn't feel like arguing or wasting time on it, especially after that third waitress made me feel like a jagoff for even complaining. I ate maybe 5 nachos and we took the rest to go so I could like give it to a friend or something.
We tipped around 20% and it irritates me that the tip will be split because we would prefer our original server get that money. We are certain she was clear in our order, and it was just ignored by the other servers and/or kitchen/chef staff.
I don't know how else to explain it just then that there are certain things that can't be undone. If you think of some food that absolutely disgusts you, and then think of it being thrown on top of your dinner... would you still be jazzed about eating it after the fact? No, of course not.
We'll never come back, but honestly that's because of that third server who was so awful to me. Everything else was an easily overlooked, honest mistake. But to be made to feel like garbage and then have someone try to deceive you is fucked up. read more
