I'm beginning to love Panera. I have only had a sandwich once, when they first started coming around, but now I'm stuck on their chicken poppyseed strawberry salad, and their cinimmon crunch bagel. I also like how they give you a "side" of cream cheese, and don't put it on the bagel, like Tim Hortons does. I stopped here as others do, when going from Detroit to Chicago. To sum it up in one word,Terrible! Every table was dirty,either dishes on it,or not wiped off! We finally got our food after a 30 min wait on a Sunday eve. The poor server the only one trying to deliver food and clear tables!! He said he couldn't find us,the tracker told him we were on three other side of the restaurant.the soup was cold sandwiches were as good as could be expected. There were at least 6 or 7 plates of food waiting on the counter at all times. Obviously this system isn't working! Where was the manager? The bathrooms were filthy,almost out of toilet paper,and flushed awful. Paper towel dispenser in the bathroom was broke. Really?? This isn't what we've come to expect from a Panera! Where is the manager? There were two girls at the cashier,arranging cookies on a tray,why don't you go help your co~worker?? At least clean tables!! This is a horrible place and a disgrace to the Panera name. It is filthy, runs out of product. Manager is clueless. I go to Panera weekly but this one in St Joe. MI is awful. Both times my family stopped there in April it was the same mess. It is franchised owned and even when I left email, chatted online and called the franchise still did not find the need to contact me. We are frequent Panera eaters and we're excited to find one in the vast wasteland of eateries on 94. We were initially greeted by a long line of people waiting to order. It turns out the line is long because the ordering staff is insanely incompetent. As a family of five, my husband went proudly with our order memorized and ready to go. As he began to spew the order, the cashier began a casual conversation with the customer at the next register over. With each new item my husband ordered, instead of repeating back to him, she said to the customer next to him "what's up?" And "I haven't seen you in while" and "I thought I'd see you today". However, my husband was unfazed because Panera's staff is always well trained in the art of closed circuit communication- meaning they always repeat your order back as if you were performing open heart surgery with the items. Unfortunately, at the moment he finished ordering, the cashier said what his total was and he over excitedly paid without the usual painstaking order review. Upon signing the receipt he realized the cashier's interaction with the other customer had seriously compromised the integrity of our order. The manager promptly came over and said "yeah, yeah. Don't worry about it. We'll take care of it". We then entered the bathrooms. Our 6 year old son, not one overly preoccupied with cleanliness, exited and reported "it smells like the elephants at the zoo". My husband came out rapidly blinking and declared that he didn't realize that the smell of urine could burn his eyes. Again overlooking these concerning signs, we pressed on and went to get our drinks. The ice maker was not functioning but there was a serving pan filled with ice in the area where you bus your own plates. People could literally reach their hands in and grab the ice contaminating the entire container. We opted out of the ice. While sitting on our sticky seats and waiting an unusually long period of time, we had ample time to observe the general uncleanliness that surrounded us. Once our food came to the table, the order was miraculously correct but my husband and I lost all our appetite. We are now sitting in the car hoping that we don't become violently ill. I would give this Panera no stars if I could. Went with a friend yesterday, the place is filthy dirty, trash all over the floor, piles of crumbs in the booth seats and the food was nasty. I ordered the turkey chili and it was pretty greasy, the classic salad had a huge pile of red onions on top of a very small amount of wilted lettuce, the bowl wasn't even halfway filled. My friend did say she thought the black bean soup was good and her salad looked a little bit better than mine. She had a reward card and was allowed a free bagel, it was not on our tray when they brought our meal. The people at the counter that take the orders don't even look at you when you order. Panera should train their people better and also teach them to keep the restaurant clean. I have money left on a Panera gift card and will not use it...that's how bad my experience had been. read more

If you ever wanted to eat in a Kosovo ditch in 1999, look no further than Panera Bread in St. Joseph, Michigan. My boyfriend and I live in Chicago, but frequent Detroit for family, so this isn't the first time we've been to this location. I usually enjoy other Panera locations, so when our food was awful the first time, we figured it was just an off day for them. This time it was even worse than the first time from every perspective. My boyfriend ordered the Bacon Turkey Bravo and I ordered a chicken panini. I understand a lunch rush, but we waited about 20 minutes. If I wanted to wait that long for lunch, I would have went to an actual restaurant. Then we actually got our food, which is when we realized the cashier did not ring it up as a Bacon Turkey Bravo, but a BLT with avocado. That may have been a blessing in disguise though, because my "panini" was a microwaved nightmare. At first I thought they were trying the deconstructed approach to appeal to a new hipster demographic, but then i realized there must have been the Panera national curling team using my sandwich as a disk in the back. Then I went to the bathroom which had one working stall, two lights out, no toilet paper and no paper towel. At one point, I wasn't sure if I was in a Panera restroom or a new Saw movie. Coincidentally, St. Joseph is the patron saint of dying, because that's what I wanted to do after I ate at the Panera in the town named after him. read more

There's not much to eat between Ann Arbor and Chicago if you avoid burgers and fries. I was happy to see a Panera at roughly the half-way point, but our visit Sunday night was terrible. The restaurant was filthy, they were out of almost all bread by 1 1/4 hours before closing, and the food took FOREVER. There was one poor guy trying to deliver the meals that were piling up on the counter AND clear the tables. We got one of the few clean-ish ones. The bathroom was worthy of a gas station. The drinks counter hadn't been wiped down in a while. Major staffing issues all around. Completely disorganized. Was a line out the door and there's no one at the register. Ordered a strawberry smoothie with my meal. It never arrived despite asking over three times. We overheard the girls discussing who wants to make a smoothie? Nobody was interested in making a smoothie. At the end of my visit to the smoothie finally arrived. It was liquid like strawberry milk. I had to wait in line 10 minutes in order to get a refund and the manager acted as though I was overreacting. Will never come here again! The employees had gauges, off color hair, and bad attitudes. Don't bother ... This is the worst Panera I have ever been to. There wasn't enough seating, they were understaffed, and they were missing essential items. On a cold day where lots of people ordered soup, EVERYONE IN THE RESTAURANT had to ask for their baguette because it was missing!! Although they were delivering the food and clearing the tables, you had to check all your items were there, and you were made to feel like you were putting them out when you asked for the missing items. I come here about once per week for lunch because of the limited healthier options close by. I am done!!! The drive-thru is a joke! I could overlook the slow service if they actually got my order correct. Salads are never right. Toppings are always left off. Once, I received a box of plain lettuce and nothing else. Today's salad was a tiny portion with two thin strips of chicken, and the wrong dressing. I don't mind an occasional mistake, but EVERY time is ridiculous. read more

Asked to "hold one moment" at the drive thru...SIX MINUTES later, I tried ordering 2 bread bowls (7:30pm, Wed. Oct. 1st). I was told they were sold out. Okay, I'll get 2 you-pick-two's with baguettes. I was told they're ALSO out of baguettes. Like...how? It's Panera. I'm only willing to pay for over-priced food in order to GET the bread. When ordering breakfast just be prepared that when you order anything with eggs there will be shells in it! Every time I order a breakfast sandwich,I think no it's a different person making it so there is no way it's gonna happen again and sure enough it always does! Panera Bread has been one of my favorite restaurants for years. They are also my favorite sandwich shop, by a long shot. This one in particular was not so great. Their food is fine, but the service has been terrible in the times I have been there. The first time, they tried to serve me a sandwich on a cinnamon crunch bagel, when I specifically ordered it with a cinnamon crunch bagel. Next time, they declined to substitute my cinnamon crunch bagel for my side, which has never been a problem in any of the other many Paneras where I have eaten. The interior of good this Panera is great, the food is good as always, but I really question the management of this location. read more
