Pane & Vino is a tiny sandwich shop near il Colosseo that specializes in local porchetta (stuffed pork loin) and is run by the friendliest owner of all time. He gets to know every customer on a first name basis. I'd go back more to see him than to have a sandwich. Seriously, he's pretty awesome. The menu is simple and focused on sandwiches featuring their famous porchetta so we tried two recommendations from the peppy proprietor. While waiting, I got a miniature bottle of Chardonnay and my spouse sipped a Coke Zero. The Traiano Porchetta sandwich (12€ - 4 stars) is an original creation of the out-going owner with a mighty Mustard-flavored blend of Roast Pork, Sun-dried Tomatoes, and Grilled Eggplant. I like mustard and, therefore, liked this specialty much more than my wife, but we ended up ignoring portions of the so-so bun. Pane & Vino Special Porchetta (12€ - 4 stars) was a huge sandwich with the sliced Roast Pork Porchetta plus Mozzarella Cheese, Grilled Eggplant, Grilled Peppers, Mushrooms, Lettuce, and Mayo on classic Italian Pane. It needed more mayonnaise or a sprinkle of balsamic and olive oil for my tastes, but there was no denying it was a hearty hero. There are lots of pane bread and sandwich shops in Rome, but there is only one -- Pane & Vino -- run by the most welcoming of owners ever. Why 5 stars? Because everything about the experience was great! --- --- --- When researching where we planned to eat lunch, the decision was made pretty quickly, once I saw a 5-star average at a place that was a short walk from the Coliseum. And for me, it lived up to the hype of that great rating. This is a very small shop - about 8 seats for customers, and we were lucky enough to score 2 of them. The person who obviously seemed to be the owner was very friendly and checked on everyone in the restaurant to make sure we were all pleased. We had been on a prosciutto and mozzarella kick since we arrived in Italy, so when I saw the sandwich version of that, I didn't even have to look closely at the rest of the menu. It ended up totally hitting the spot, and is something I wish I could eat every week! Damn that whole "different continent from where I live" thing. My wife ordered a meatball sandwich and I'll admit, it wasn't nearly as delicious as mine. This was the only miss, in my opinion, because everything else was great. Bonus: they served bottles of Coke Zero with Lemon here, and I absolutely loved it. For my 1000th review, I wanted to give a HUUUUUGE shout out to Pane & Vino and the owner, Fabio, for truly presenting the best sandwiches and the kindest hospitality to my husband and I during our lunch visit. I had seen the positive Yelp reviews and was eager to enjoy a meal here during our stay in Rome. We tried to visit first around 12:30pm, however, a group of six (including 2 young kids) occupied all of the stools, and when I very kindly asked if the parents would not mind having one of the toddlers sit on their lap so we could share one chair between us I was met with a barrage of hostility-literally asking me if I know how to count 6 people for 6 chairs. Before anything escalated (because I was pretty astonished at their behavior and audacity), we left, toured the Roman Forum and returned around 2pm to try again. At 2pm it was less crowded and there were two stools available. When we went to thecounter to order, the owner, Fabio, recognized us from earlier and asked what the problem had been. When I explained, he apologized for their behavior (nothing for him to be sorry about obviously) and told us that they were quite rude to him and his staff as well. He thanked us for returning and said he wanted to put a smile on my face by the time I left, and promised his sandwiches would do so. They did, but Fabio's conversation and passion for his food did that even prior to me tasting anything. After our meal, he even gave us a map of Rome and little known places to visit that are cool, such as the Aventine Keyhole and the rose garden. Now for the food. I ordered the special porchetta, their most popular sandwich. It has roast pork, buffalo mozzarella, grilled eggplant, grilled peppers, mushrooms, lettuce, and just a tad bit of mayo to tie everything together. Not only was the portion gigantic-easily could have fed 2 people-but the flavors were amazing! The bread was fresh and nicely toasted and the pork was very tender. This is a very, very messy sandwich so be prepared with the napkins! My husband ordered the Poppea-parma raw ham, buffalo mozzarella, and rocket salad. He loved his sandwich and shared my sentiments about the fresh ingredients! Fabio was also kind enough to give us each a free chocolate mousse cup which was so,so creamy and delicious! They have a cooler of drinks plus wine (obviously) and beer. We both really enjoyed our beer selections. Prices are super reasonable and if there is no room to dine in-and it's not 100 degrees outside-feel free to get your sandwich to carry out and enjoy in one of the many parks or piazzas nearby. If Fabio is here, you're in for an absolute treat. He has run this place for seven years, invented the menu, and is happy to entertain. If he's not, the food will be just as good, but you won't get his service- which is incredible. If you want someone friendly to answer any questions you have in English, French, German, Italian, or Arabic, then Fabio is your man. He also has some stories! In addition, the food itself is great. I asked for ketchup on the side as I had asked for no mayo on my sandwich. My sandwich was SO good...with ketchup. Without ketchup, it was a bit dry. As far as we saw he was fluent in a slew of different languages (at least Italian, English, French) and converses with you while you wait and after you eat. I'm from the Portland, Oregon foodie area. I'm serious about flavor. I also lived in Central America for a couple years and left fearful of pig product but my husband convinced me to try this place. Our first trip to Rome was a gastric punishment. People served poor quality high priced food. We learned our lesson for this second trip and are using Yelp too. Thanks to Yelp and Pane & Vino, our first meal in Rome was fantastic!!!! All the sandwiches have this incredible and well seasoned juicy roast of pork except one which is the burger. Each sandwich has a different bread...red is colored with tomatoes from Mt Vesuvius. Black is colored with squid ink (don't worry there's zero squid flavor). Yellow is colored with Turmeric! My husband got the burger. It was absolutely delicious! I got the special...HELLO! Incredible and big so you can totally share it or take your time they don't push you out. There's alcoholic options along with sodas and waters to drink. The owner is wonderful! He refers to his restaurant as his house (so he'd never charge a fee for you to sit and eat there) and his menu items, creations, are his "children." He speaks 6 languages fluently so no worries if you don't speak Italian, he also speaks English, Spanish, French, and then 2 others that aren't Latin based. (He also speaks an additional 2 dialects not so fluently but hey, he's doing well in my book and very helpful to the 4 different couples and families that were in his tiny restaurant while we were there. Eat here afterwards before your Coliseum tour. Also, he's happy to give you suggestions for the area...he recommended a gem nearby of ST Clementine basilica to go check out some newly discovered ruins! We ordered the special prochetta and added a spicy Italian sauce to our sandwiches which just added another level to the yumminess. Colossal burgers served down the block from the Colosseum. It's a small restaurant without restrooms so be warned but the food makes up for that. I ordered the signature burger and my girlfriend ordered signature pork sandwich. Don't recall the names but ask the cashier/server and he will point you in the right direction. The burger was a huge piece of beef served with bacon on black buns. It was absolutely delicious and I finished every last sesame seed. I liked the burger more then the pork sandwich cause it was warm but both were out of sight. Prepare to really eat because the portions are for 2 people each sandwich.
