First time here and it wasn't a great experience. We ordered the steak and it was probably the worst I've had. The mushroom pasta was greasy and lacked flavor. It was supposed to have garlic but there was none to be found. The carbonara was really salty but definitely the better of all the dishes we ordered. This restaurant was rated well and we've been having only so-so food so I was stoked to try it! Very convenient location. It does have the typical Rome alleyway with people smoking and cars going by. We started with the garlic bruschetta and burrata focaccia. The burrata focaccia was absolutely delicious, and the bruschetta was fairly good but ultimately just toasted bread with raw garlic and olive oil. I ordered the spinach ricotta ravioli as my main, and it was good but not anything that blew me away. Other members of my family got the fettuccine with Gorgonzola and walnuts and the pizza with salmon, both of which were pretty darn good. Stopped in for pizza and beer with my spouse on a whim at 2pm in the afternoon. Pizza was good - but that's been true about almost everyplace we have gone in Rome. Service was . . . disinterested. The server acted like we were a distraction or putting them out in some way. Very off putting attitude. Cacio e Pepe - over sauced with cheese as the pasta was drowning and the balance of pepper to cheese was not proportional as this signature dish of Roma was a big disappointment. Funghi Fettucine- the mushrooms were lackluster and the pasta was not al dente, as it was very poor representation of the local ingredients. My goodness!! AMAZING food and service. We came in just for a midday snack and prosecco. The steam clam appetizer was so big. I couldn't even finish. It was absolutely delicious. My husband had the fried fish. Very generous portions. We of course made room for some crème brûlée and it was perfect in every way. What a gem of a place. My boyfriend & I were in Rome during a holiday, so many of the restaurants we'd browsed before arriving were closed. We found Il Corallo on Yelp and decided to go for it. Did not have a reservation, but wait time was minimal (2 minutes max). We were seated inside and did have to wait a little before staff approached us, but everyone was very friendly. Between the two of us, we ordered focaccia & prosciutto (I could have left a 5 star review on this alone), fettuccine alla gricia con tartufo (basically cacio e pepe but with pancetta & black truffle cream - flavors perfectly blended) and a diavola pizza (dreaming about this pizza still). We did not know that focaccia = insanely flavored pizza crust, but no complaints over here with our two "pizzas". Everything was insanely delicious - would absolutely recommend! One note on wine - being from the US, we anticipated all bottles of wine to be way overpriced vs market value, but we ordered a bottle of Brunello, priced at 60 euro and when we checked against Vivino app, it showed $60 in the states. It didn't take long to walk here from the Castel S'Angelo. I liked walking in the small streets of Rome, but I would caution watching out for cars and motorcyclists. On the way here, I passed by several other restaurants and wine bars with people outside asking you to dine at their eatery. I had my sights set on this place, so it was easy for me to turn them down. My friend recommended ordering the carbonara, which is spaghetti noodles with bacon, egg, and cheese. I arrived just before the busy lunch time so I got a table easily. They gave us plenty of time to decide what to order. It was also helpful that the server spoke a bit of English, and the menu was translated in English. They served a small plate of what the server called "crudo". It was good, but too salty for my taste. What I ordered: Carbonara with truffle €15 - If I visited again, I'd get carbonara without truffle. The truffle flavor was so strong that I could smell it coming. Otherwise, the noodles were al dente and perfectly cheesy. There were bits of "bacon" that were hard to chew, almost like the crudo that was served in the beginning. Veal with mushroom €18 - Get this! The meat was tender, and the sauce was good and not overwhelming. Classic lasagna €12 - Get this! This was the favorite of the table. It doesn't look that good, but the bolognese sauce was delicious. Our hotel front desk gal suggested Il Corallo as a place to go for dinner. We ended going to this fabulous restaurant two nights in a row. It became our very most favorite place in Rome. The food has the BEST flavors ever. Everything is prepared fresh and hot! During our two visits we ordered the fettuccine alla bolognese (two nights in a row), the carbonara pasta, a pizza with prosciutto, the beef filet with green pepper sauce and the brocollette and panna cotta for dessert. Every single dish was perfection. The carbonara was the best version of all that we had tried during our four days here. Same for the pizza. Their bolognese sauce is absolutely the best of anywhere we've had bolognese. The panna cotta was creamy and speck with the strawberry sauce (caramel and chocolate are options too). The steak was tender (although not cooked to medium well as requested) and enhanced by the light and creamy peppercorn sauce. The depths of flavor for every entree was incredible. There are not enough adjectives to describe how much our family loved their food. Romano was our waitperson for both nights and he's great. We sat outside as it was a warm evening, but noticed the inside was a fun environment too. We will look forward to dining here again the next time we are in Rome. Highly recommend! Dinner here will always be one of my highest memories from our trip. We arrived around 9pm and were seated at one of the out door tables on the street without a wait. This ended up being the key to our experience. The street was narrow so we really engaged with the others a the restaurant and those walking and driving by. I got the cheese pizza and cacio e pepe, which was the best I had in Italy. The noodles were perfectly al dente and the thickness was just the right size. We ate here twice in one week. My wife was enamored with the tall, dark, and handsome twin waiters. I will say the the wine and the food were great. This place was a good find. A special of the night, a delicate lasagne with pumpkin squash melted in my mouth, and was one of the best dishes I ate during all week in Rome. She had the cacio de pepe with truffles, a super-flavorful bowl of pasta. They gave us a limoncello to enjoy with their perfect raspberry panna cotta. No need for gelato after that. We returned on Sunday, which seems to be an off-night for restaurants in Rome, at least compared to Fridays and Saturdays, when everyone is out on the town. October is the month for porcini mushrooms, so a mushroom pizza, followed by a delicious, rich carbonara. Great but order with caution. We had two meals here. First was GREAT but the second was just OK. The first night we got a caprese salad, penne arrabiata and panna cotta. The caprese salad was perfect, well balanced and high quality ingredients. They served us a bit of spicy pork end bits for free which was nice and kind of necessary since we waited 40? minutes between our app and main. Penne Arrabiata was just what we needed, heat and spice with all the cacio e pepe we've been downing. The penne was cooked perfectly and came out piping hot. We finished by sharing the strawberry syrup drizzled panna cotta. Everything was really good and we also saw the guys hand cutting slices of prosciutto so we got that the next day. Second day, we got the focaccia with sliced prosciutto. The focaccia was very different from what I've known in America, it was nearly like pizza, well seasoned, very thin, with only a slightly drizzle of olive oil, no herbs. We enjoyed with the prosciutto which was a generous portion. We ordered a white pizza with zucchini blossom and veal with mushrooms to share because we were in the mood. This meal was not a good balance on our end though because the white pizza while super good felt really heavy and salty and the veal with mushrooms was super creamy, heavy and salty so I felt a bit sick with too much rich food. Service was consistently slow which was fine but the second night with no one else in the restaurant, I ordered a water and a glass of prosecco and they took over 20 minutes so I just asked for the check and left because I was dying of thirst. They did give us complimentary shots of limoncello which was very nice but I really was dying of thirst with the salty heavy meal so I would have much preferred the water I ordered. We found this place on yelp and came here on Christmas Eve. Full of locals and tourists that must be in the know- this place is definitely worth a visit! We started with the Fococia, which was thinner and more flavorful and unlike any other I'd ever had (no toppings, just really good bread)... it didn't even need oil. We then shared the "stuffed artichoke " appetizer, fair warning, it's not stuffed - rather marinated. Very good! Left me wanting more. This was our first dinner in Italy and I already knew I wanted to get the Spaghetti Carbonara- it did not disappoint. The dish definitely lived up to every expectation I had and I'm thrilled it did! The boyfriend got the fettuccine with black truffle- the look on his face said it all. It was good and definitely loaded with truffle. Needless to say, we were both very happy. We ordered the tiramisu, it was good... not great. It's possible that tiramisu is just different and more custartdy (and less lady fingers) than in the states. The service was great! Our waiter was so nice. After everything we struck up a conversation and I asked him about octopus (in general), he ended up letting us try their octopus dish they have (free of charge) - it was okay... cold, not my thing- but still the service was wonderful. Pure YUMM!!! The Cacio de Pepe pasta was absolutely delicious as my first meal in Rome. I loved the presentation of the crunchy Parmesan cheese with the creamy pasta inside. The Spicey Arabitta pasta was also hit with just the right amount of kick to it. Both pasta's had no meat in them so if you did want some protein I would suggest ordering some meatballs on the side. Our server was attentive and the small little restaurant was kept clean. I wouldn't recommend ordering the bread since it was quite dry and didn't come with any olive oil or dipping sauce. Also just FYI in Italy water is never free and has to be purchased in the restaurant and they have a restroom at the back for customers. read more

When eating in Rome, the best restaurants are in the sides streets and alleyways. You know you're eating someplace fabulous if the locals are there. Il Corallo is a gem in the middle of a busy city that doesn't disappoint. Everything we ordered was fantastic! The salad was fresh and the perfect size. My husband and I both had the spaghetti but he had meat as well. We also had a lovely brunello wine. The service was excellent and the atmosphere lively. I am in awe of this local, Italian gem located near the Pantheon. My family was in the mood for a casual pizza place, so I did some research and found that Il Corallo looked promising. Let's just say that this restaurant was exceptional and served some of the best Italian food I have had. Firstly, the restaurant is nestled in a quiet alley away from tourist attractions. It is cozy and welcoming inside. The service was fabulous! Our server suggested a great bottle of wine and helped us choose items from the menu that he recommended. We started with the caprese salad, which was fresh and flavorful. The bread and olive oil were a great accompaniment. For dinner, I chose the mushroom, sausage and mozzarella pizza. My dad had the porcini mushroom pizza, while my mom ordered the fettuccini with mushrooms. The pizza was outstanding. The crust was crispy and the toppings were just perfect. They even serve the pizza with a spicy dipping oil (it's a must)! My mom's pasta was great and was served in a light olive oil sauce. You could tell that the pasta was homemade. A great lunchtime haunt for high quality, authentic Roman food. The reality - there is no such thing as truly authentic Roman food in the vast majority of central area restaurants, but Il Corallo does a really nice job with their cacio e pepe. It was one fo the best I've had. The remainder of the menu is pretty standard with brick oven pizzas, an above average spaghetti alla carbonara, and a nice assortment of contorni. I ate outside, I was the only table "braving" the 50 degree Fahrenheit afternoon chill, and it was delightful. A good house wine, a thin crusted Margherita pizza and a delicious plate of cacio e pepe - what more could I want. Oh, and I added an insalata mista to keep myself honest for when my wife asks if I had anything green to eat with my lunch. I recommend Il Corallo - but would make it a lunchtime meal and head for a more typical Roman dinner at a restaurant a bit off-the-beaten-track. read more
