Don't let anyone tell you its impossible to get a bad meal in italy, because they are either lying to you, or they have horrible taste. I've had many bad meals on my visits to italy and this is one of them. Now don't get me wrong, the atmosphere is fun watching the people stroll by. The wine was delicious, but the linguine seafood was not good at all. The pasta was over cooked. The sauce had very little flavor except salty. It just wasn't good. The service wasn't great but to be honest i felt it was the norm for many of these street side restaurants. I asked the family sitting next to me to rate the flavor of their meals and they gave it a 5 out of 10. My recommendation is keep looking. read more

We luckily stumbled upon La Canonica while exploring Trastevere. We were looking for an apertivo and ended up staying for dinner. We enjoyed an outdoor table that was cool despite the 96 degree heat, thanks to the fans and misters. The food was delicious and came quickly. Mimmo our waiter took great care of us. He offered great suggestions on food and the accompanying vino. He was always available but didn't rush us. We were able to enjoy the people watching and energy that is Trastevere. It is easy to see why it is so popular. The location, delicious food and great staff make it a perfect stop for an apertivo or dinner or both in Rome. read more

Good ambiance and good food! The service was not the best, though. Sitting on the patio seemed like a cute idea but perhaps they forgot about us out there? We had the vongole clams and coda alla vaccinara romana. The clam pasta was just OK - most of the clams were empty and the first pasta came out cold. They sent another pasta out and there were more clams in it but by that time I was halfway through my dish. The vaccinara was the star of the show. So tender and delicious. The sauce was rich and tasted like the meat had been slow simmered in it for hours. It is my favorite dish on this trip so far! My family and I were not the biggest fan of La Canonica. It's in the main food area of Trastevere but I really feel like they try to fit too many people. We were so closed to the tables next to us that someone at a neighboring table got up to use the restroom and knocked all of my mom's utensils off the table. The vibe is not there at all, and the waiters don't seem to have a system. As for the food... - Tripe Alla Romana: 4/5, this was pretty good tripe. I didn't think there was anything special about the sauce though, it was just tripe and tomato sauce :) - Coda Alla Vaccinara: 2/5, this felt like the most basic oxtail dish that you can find in any culture. Our waiter really hyped it up as being stewed for hours but the meat was pretty tough. I'd recommend going somewhere else in Trastevere. read more

Sitting outside by the lights you definitely can't help but enjoy that no matter what you eat. Customer service here is absolutely amazing. The food? I ordered a standard spaghetti with meatballs. It was okay - not like a nonna I once had but not bad. I give it a three out of five particularly because I feel if I try something else I might be able to have a more reasonable gauge of the rest of their offerings. As tourist that didn't pre-plan a location for dinner we were grateful to find this lovely restaurant in this nice area. The food was very yummy and provided a good vibe. We really wanted to sit on the outside patio but there was a long wait. Instead we agreed to sit inside which was fine - but if you don't like to be near other tables than I would suggest against it as the tables were placed very close to one another to accommodate as many guests as possible. Super cute dinner spot. As most know, tip is not a custom in Italy. However, the server did insinuate a tip suggestion that I thought was strange ... Stopped in for dinner without a reservation on a busy night and were luckily seated quickly! Service was quick and the people were very attentive and gave suggestions. The food was pretty good for the price and the menu is large and offers a big variety. I got the cacio e Pepe and it was good but not the best. Others at the table got the carbonara, sea bass, lasagna, and seafood pasta and while they were satisfied and happy with their choices they were similarly not blown away. What a tourist trap this is! This is an assembly line restaurant. It is HUGE, patrons are seated one on top of one other. The food is mediocre. I had the lamb chops which were cooked until tough as leather and gristly, and my partner had the chicken in balsamic sauce, which was mostly sauce and bland. I would actually avoid that area of Rome, all the restaurants cater to the tourist trade. There are so many really good restaurants outdide the tourist areas. You just need to go a few miles outside Centro. read more

Once dinnertime hits, the Trastevere neighborhood is packed with people as it's allegedly one of the best places in the city for food. It's within (fairly long) walking distance from the major sites like the Trevi Fountain and Forum, etc. My one general rule when traveling is to avoid the places with folks outside beckoning you in. That's often unavoidable in many Italian cities, but I think more often than not the food is just not as good. Located near La Cononica were a few places with extremely long lines to get in. We were hungry and without reservations around 9:30 pm, prime dinner time (god, I love Italy. I'm so sick of being in cities where they STOP serving at 9:30 pm!), so despite my intentions, it was easy to be swayed by the really nice gentleman who promised us a great table and handed us cups of Prosecco as we waited for five minutes. There's a ton of seating outside, and we had a really nice table in an alleyway lit with Christmas lights. An extremely sweet waitress named Diana took care of us and she was truly outstanding, even took my request to change my pasta from fettuccine (which I realized probably had eggs after I ordered it) Arrabbiata to spaghetti after confirming my suspicions. We ordered the bruschetta which was good, as it is in basically just about every place we ordered it in Italy. My pasta was perfectly al dente and the sauce really good, too (I appreciate that they drown the pasta in it). The portion was enormous and I probably ate too much. I'd rate my food four stars easily, but it's pretty basic and there's very few vegan options. My husband ordered fried prawns and calamari and actually hated it. There's no seasoning at all in the breading and it just comes out a platter without any sauce or anything to accompany it. I think he rated it as his most awful meal in Italy. I won't dwell on this as it is what it is, but this makes me lower my rating from a 4 to a 3. At the end of the meal, Diana told us if we promised to write them a five star review on Trip Advisor, she'd give us complimentary Limoncello. I told her that I don't write reviews for Trip Advisor. There was enough of a language barrier that she didn't really understand me, so she offered the Limoncello regardless, which was nice, but we didn't take her up on it. I only mention it because soliciting reviews isn't cool (obviously the business requires the waitstaff to do this, so I don't fault her for it) and if you're reading this, you might want to take the five star reviews on Trip Advisor with a grain of salt. The other odd thing: when settling the bill and paying with our credit card, she asked us if we wanted to leave a tip. I could tell this made her feel uncomfortable because it is absolutely not standard practice in Italy to ask for tips in restaurants. It's usually included in the cover charge but regardless, there's never even a tip line on receipts. We of course tipped because Diana was really wonderful, but the experience kind of left a bad taste in my mouth. I'd bet money that they do not ask Italian customers for tips. read more

This was a nice and busy restaurant in Trastevere where we stayed while we were visiting Rome. They had outdoor seating with well-lit ambiance. We had to wait about 15 minutes before we got seated, and once we had the table the service was pretty prompt. We sat where the host guided us and it was great. Right near a fan with a mister on it. It right at 98F so it's what we needed after a long walk. Services was fast, and even if I told them to take their time on bringing another beer, they were prompt. We decided to split a margharita pizza because pizza is SOOO good in Rome. I cannot recommend this restaurant. I have been to Rome many times and I typically try to find less touristy spots however this was nearby and we decided to give it a shot. The service is fast, almost too fast. Our food was brought to us within 5 minutes of ordering which is never a good sign. The pasta was semi cold. And they brought the courses all at once and didn't bring plates for us to share the salad. When we asked for additional plates he took the food and put it in a to-go box (it could not have been more than 20 minutes after we sat down). Additionally, We asked for the house red wine and they brought us a bottle of Chianti. Maybe we should have known better but when we got the check it was 34 euro and the waiter said it wasn't the house red after all even though that's what we asked for. I'm very disappointed because unlike the majority of Italy the touristy restaurants are only trying to turn tables and get tips (which they asked for, by the way.) I will be way more diligent in the future. In the bright side the flavor was decent (but cold) and the ambiance was ok but not anything special compared to the rest of trestavere read more

The food is good. I always get Amatriciana anywhere I go to judge the place. We ordered bruschetta for 6€ and 1/4L of wine that was one 4€, good deal. Then we ordered 3 pastas. Two came out but the third never came. We told the waiter after 10 minutes and he ran back and said oh yeah. It then took another 10 minutes. So after all the waiting our food was cold. We ate here 3 - yes 3 - times while staying in Traverste, Rome last week. When your stepmom is deathly allergic to nuts, if you find a place that takes the allergy seriously and has delicious food, you repeat eat! Good thing this place had delicious food, great service and a yummy menu. La Canonica has a few tables out front near the main piazza, but most are indoors either upstairs or down, and a few more outdoor tables on a tucked away, quiet side street. They use all olive oil for any frying and cooking and were very helpful with the allergen conversation. The guy who stands outside to try to make you want to come to the restaurant is not pushy like some of them in the area, and was kind and helpful. I had something different everytime we came, but one thing we always got - their bruschetta! I've never seen more fresh tomatoes, and they were marinated in a great olive oil mixture that was simple yet delicous. One piece of bruschetta is large enough to split if you so choose. I also had the caprese salad one night, the pasta with cheese and pepper another, and lasanga the last. All great choices! The pasta with cheese and pepper was probably my favorite. So simple yet so good. I'd recommend anyone staying in or passing through Traverstere to have a meal here. It is worth it! read more
