We visited twice during our recent trip to Rome. We were starving after our visit to the Colosseum and we were so happy to find this place a short walk away. This place has a great selection of pizzas, pastas and drinks and a really lovely atmosphere. Everyone was very happy with their meals including two finicky teenagers. Ok, Italy, the standard is set then. Where do you go in Rome when you've just arrived to your AirBnB, it's 930 at night, and you're in the touristy area but don't want touristy food or prices? Here, that's where. Honestly, this place out did my expectations in many respects. First, the atmosphere was inviting and relaxing with soft jazz lingering in the air and the dim lighting carrying it throughout the restaurant. Second, our waiter, Andrea, only added to the environment with his friendly smile and warm personality. Lastly, the food. The food is a pilgrim's reward. Our pallets enjoyed every bite of savory oxtail, scrumptious Margarita pizza, rich Bucatini all'amatriciana pasta, smooth dardano wine that Andrea helped us choose, refreshing vanilla gelato, and a special creamy strawberry dessert only known to this restaurant. Trying to find a place to eat near the Colosseum in Rome can be a challenge due to the sheer number of people that are in the area. There were queues everywhere as the 3 o'clock hour drew near, which is the time many eateries close for riposo. We happened upon this place at about 2:45, and as it turned out it didn't close. We sat outside in their shelter on a windy day and enjoyed a pretty good meal. The salad's lettuce had obviously been sitting a while as the head lettuce had that sad pinkish colour that says, I'm not fresh. The carrot, tomato and rocket was fresh though so we picked that out. The lovely K's lasagna was pretty good, and my pizza was quite good although there was only prosciutto, rocket and tomato on it, no sauce of any kind which made it a bit dry. The service was pretty good, and the prices weren't terrible which is saying something given its location. You won't be eating gourmet for sure, but it does fill the hole, which is saying something. read more

Don't let the line across the street turn you away. This gem was a guide recommended. There is a down stairs with air conditioning. The food was fantastic and good portions. Good prices. You might want to make reservations if your group is large, as some of the guided tours make reservations for thier groups for after the Colosseum tour. Highly recommended. read more

Good pizza, but slow service. Il Diavolo was one of the better pizzas we have had here in Rome and the Aperol Spritz were good. I just didn't feel that the service was all that great. They had sat another couple at the table next to us after we had already been there for 5 minutes and the the server had asked them / served them first while we just sat at the table for about another 5-10 minutes before they came around to ask us what we wanted. It was weird. It also took awhile to get a hold of the server so we could pay the check. Apart from the service the food was decent. I would give it another try. read more

The food here is fantastic. I heard about this spot from Rick Steves' book on Rome and happened to be staying very close to this restaurant. I was skeptical about almost any restaurant near me, assuming that it would be touristy and sub-par. Naumachia exceeded expectations. Cool little spot very close to the Colosseum. I went there several times, and the food was great every time. They are also quick with the takeaway operation as well. So if you are nearby and need some pizzas or something, that is the place to go. I had a stewed cod with olives, tomatoes, capers, onions, etc. and it was fantastic. Fried anchovies were a thing at that time, and they were incredible. Huge portion. Light batter, very fresh, and served simply with lemon wedges. Honestly, all you need. Also had coda alla vaccinara (braised oxtail), and that was phenomenal. I would recommend the beef carpaccio as well, if you are into that. The lasagna bolognese is also very good. The pizzas are really thin, with crispy crust and done correctly. The people who work there are friendly and quick and proper. Located about 5 minute walk from the Colosseum, Naumachia was one of the better dining experiences that we had in this little area. We actually ate here twice during our time in Rome and, honestly, both were a-ok meals. (+) Plenty of seating and a very Italian atmosphere. Plus it was nice and cozy warm on chilly day. (+) Prices are very fair and affordble. Each meal ran about 20 euros for two people nd usually consisted of a few food items in addition to a couple of drinks. (+) The spaghetti seemed to be their strong suit. I very much enjoyed their cacio e pepe and their carbonara. (+) service was fairly quick and mostly friendly, although the wait staff could be a bit sarcastic at times. (-) Other menu items were a complete disappointment, Their met lasagna was mediocre at best, the margherita pizza was paper thin and way too oily. Plus their garlic bread was outright pitiful. Basically it was a hit or miss with their menu. (-) claustrophobic seating arrangements for people who didn't come in as part of a group, it seemed. Very tight and waitstaff was always hustling and bustling very closely around you. Overall, this place was alright. The prices were good and certain items were very enjoyable. Unfortunately they were terribly inconsistent. I'd go there again in a pinch, but I'd also keep expectations tempered. 3 stars. It's A-Ok. read more

When we arrived in Rome we were exhausted so we found our hotel, which was near the Colloseo and took a nap. Upon awakening we were starving and it was way past room service hours so we went for a walk. That's how we stumbled upon this gem. It was packed with locals, but we were seated promptly, our order was taken with a great smile and rapidly. This occurred every single time we went back throughout our stay in Rome. The food ranged from 'ok' to 'fantastic', but their service was always on the ball. Even offering complimentary aperitifs and dessert. Their pizza and tiramisu were especially good and I would recommend to all. Overall, I'd recommend this place to anyone in the area. Some nights were more touristy than others, but they are open late and welcome all. read more

I would agree with 3.5 stars, so I rounded up. After visiting the Colosseum, my boyfriend and I were starved, so we stopped into Naumachia for lunch. We ordered the bruschetta to start. It was the highlight of the meal. The tomato's were so fresh and the bread was so light and crispy; YUM! Then, we ordered the Cacio e Pepe & a plain pizza with prosciutto. The cacio e Pepe was yummy, but I've had better. Also, being from NY, we didn't realize a plain pizza literally meant a pizza with nothing on it! I would expect the waiter to realize this and at least give us a heads up (since we were speaking English and asking about the menu). So, we were a bit disappointed when a round piece of bread with prosciutto placed on top was brought out to us, but we understood that it was our fault. Very near the Coliseum, we were concerned about it being touristy, but one look at the menu, we saw prices for locals and asked for a table. Service was a bit spotty, one beer was served, the other one took another 20 minutes. The food was very good though, so I give them full marks there. Randomly walked in on our first evening in Rome. Yelp reviews threw my off but we decided to try it. We were very happy with the food! Solid service on a busy evening - all staff speak English extremely well. Dessert was fantastic also! Great first impression for us which will be tough to beat. It's a few blocks away from the Colosseum. They proudly advertise "air conditioning" on the sign. The wine list has merlot on it. I knew what we were getting into, but the options in the area aren't great. The biggest draw here is a very nice atmosphere and pleasant servers who aren't irritated by tourists. Because, indeed, this is a touristy restaurant. I ordered "Pasta Naumachia" which was described as a sausage ragu. What I received was (I swear to God) the sauce/meatballs from Chef Boyardee's Sphaghetti O's over linguine. It tasted exactly the same! What cracked me up was one of my friends sampling it, declaring it delicious and searching for a similar dish in vain on other menus. I don't have the heart to tell her she can recreate it at home for .59 a can. read more

We found this place because it was close to the apartment we were staying in. It is relatively near to the colosseum but I don't feel like this direct area is very touristy. It's reasonably priced, service is good and the food is fantastic! We had the fried risotto and mozzarella balls, two different pizzas, ricotta with honey, fettuccine, steak with olive oil and balsamic vinegar (for the record we ate here twice before I wrote this review). Everything was lovely. The ambience is nice and we were able to sit next to the window, which was open and gave us a pleasant breeze. This was priced really well especially for the quality. This was one of the finest restaurant experiences I've ever had, without question. This is a place where a lot of the locals gather to break bread, guzzle wine and enjoy high-quality food, and many were chummy with the waitstaff, but we never felt unwelcome and were greeted warmly and professionally. Bruschetta with smoked salmon was outstanding, as was the one with fresh tomato. Every bite was superb. The buffalo mozzarella was the best I've ever eaten - each slice was like biting into a piece of heaven. By the time it arrived my expectations became high, but they were still surpassed. My fettuccine with mixed seafood in white wine sauce was perfection, and my friend loved his steak so much he was making noises of quiet pleasure. I've only heard him make those sounds a couple of times in the years I have eaten out with him, and he orders steak very often wherever we go. Theirs he considered superlative. The moscato was a wonderful one - sweet, crisp and summery. The chocolate mouse?! I still haven't recovered from its elegant, drivingly delicious impact. They made a very small mistake not even worth mentioning, but either to unofficially make up for it or just to be friendly at the end of the evening they gave us complimentary Limoncello that really hit the spot. I feel extremely fortunate we found them before we left Rome. When I'm back in town I will be at their doorstep again, to be sure. read more

We were lucky to have found this lovely restaurant during the late hours of the night. It's a few minutes away from the Colosseum and the service was impeccable. Our wine of the night was a 2014 Coppo Costebianche Chardonnay from Piemonte. I ordered the Tagliatelle con Gamberi Rossi Siciliani (homemade tagliatelle, Sicilian red prawns, and a splash of Brandy). My boyfriend ordered a classic Cacio e Pepe which was amazing (I just HAD to try it)! We also tried their frittura di calamari which did not disappoint. Did I mention the service was great?
