Pretty disappointed with one of "Boston's Best".
We went on a weeknight to celebrate our anniversary. The vibe was very loud but very happening for a Tuesday night.
We were sat quickly with some menus and a quick plate of house made bread. The bread had a lovely salt crust and was delicious, with some great olive oil on the side. We ordered a couple of "mock tails", both were great but their ne'groni was stellar.
Our server was fantastic and very polite, and asked us if we were celebrating anything. She was quick to explain how the 3 course $79 pre fixe worked, and asked if we had any food allergies or considerations.
All of the above ticked all the boxes and this would have been great if we ended there.
However, after placing our food order, we waited about 25 minutes for the first course. Someone stopped by our table to apologize for the wait and explain that "the kitchen was backed up." I think there was a large party just in front of us, so, we can be a little understanding.
However, the table next to us that was sat and ordered after us received their first courses before us - and these items were items that we ordered. To add to that, we waited around 10 more minutes (so almost 40 minutes) before we were brought our first dishes.
The first courses were the Tomato Watermelon salad and a well prepared grilled mackerel with cannelloni beans. The tomato salad - it being the prime part of tomato season for New England - was a huge disappointment. It was incredibly imbalanced and a strait shot of acid with extremely aggressive salt. So instead of fresh summery vibes with the tomatoes, we got winter's best grape tomatoes, a mound of salt and some forgetful basil garnish, on top of some congealed bulgar like cake. This was a hard pass.
The mackerel, on the other hand, was incredibly under seasoned and seriously lacking salt. The cherries were a nice acidic contrast and played very nicely with the brodo and beans. However, I had to slather overly salty tomatoes on it to give it the pizazz it deserved, which was a huge letdown.
Both were well presented but pretty big disappointments.
The next two dishes came more than 20 minutes later.
We had two pastas:
1) A nice toasted ravioli stuffed with some sort of cheese, in a sauce accented with blueberries, corn and sage. Looked interesting on the menu - and the combination worked. It took a few bites but grew on us pretty quickly. Probably our favorite dish of the night.
2) Spaghetti with trout roe. Forgettable, I've had a better Martha Stewart one pot pasta than this. The roe did absolutely nothing for the dish as it was smothered at the bottom of the bowl.
And - that's right, another more than 20 minute wait after we finished before the last course. We were almost 2 hours in now for a 3 course meal where you order everything in advance.
For the last course, we had our two "mains":
1) Short Rib - An extremely huge, bland disappointment. The presentation was great but the short rib itself was just not seasoned at all! It was served alongside some assertive overpowering cheese, assertive overpowering grainy mustard, a water like cornstarch thickened sauce, and two extremely sad and forgetful roasted carrots. This was awful. I took two bites and was done. The meat itself was fatty in a not great congealed sort of way for short rib, and just tasted completely nondescript. This was what I was looking forward to the most. Yikes.
2) Mataki mushroom - well toasted and over some sort of grit like grain. This was fine - well seasoned and well cooked. I liked this fine enough, my wife wasn't a fan and said the mushrooms lost a lot of their flavor from the dry almost "grilled" like preparation.
After the completely annoyingly forgettable mains, our server politely cleared the table and asked if we wanted to look at desert options. We made the decision after that third round to pass and grab some ice cream up the street, as we were really not in the mood for more disappointment.
We received two bite size shortbread cookies and the check.
This place has a $25 per person cancellation policy that we've been a victim of before, but I'd heard nothing but great things about this place and was eager to try.
If this is Boston's Michelin star contender, hard pass on the guide coming to Boston. read more
