My introduction to Paleta Planeta came under the best possible circumstance: someone else was paying. Paleta Planeta showed up at a worked sponsored event on a scorching summer afternoon, with two handcarts, handing out handcrafted paletas in flavors like creamy coconut, horchata, strawberry and icy watermelon. One bite in and I realized that these were very different than the mass-produced paletas collecting frost in your grocery store freezer aisle. Naturally, I made my way to their downtown San Jose shop where I experienced a different kid of brain free: $5.25 per paleta. Yes, there's a moment of sticker shock. But quickly recovering, I reminded myself that not all frozen treats are created equal. The quality is there. The ingredients are fresh tasting, the flavors are as what you imagine it to be and these were handcrafted and not mass produced. My main disappointment after making the trek to downtown San Jose was that the creamy coconut paleta that started this whole obsession was sold out when I visited. I suppose that is proof that others also have good taste. The staff member did mention it is a popular flavor and it is part of the rotation. Parking in downtown as you can imagine is luck dependent, but I managed to snag a spot right on the side of the shop. I have lived in San Jose for the past couple of years, and have frequently driven past this place. I decided to finally give it a try today. I went in at around 6 PM, and the space-themed interior was so charming. I was a bit overwhelmed with the selection of water-based and milk-based paletas, but I ended up getting a bundle of 5 to-go for my partner and me: 1 lavender horchata, 1 horchata, 2 chocolate de abuelita, and 1 cookie monster. I'm so glad Paleta Planeta now has a brick and mortar, and the location is easily accessible as well. The interior is fun and definitely decorated to the space theme--lots of astronauts and galaxy vibes. There were a few pieces of decor (like a giant hanging paleta) that the children inside really flocked to. It would be a fun photo op as well, if you're into that kind of thing. They had a large selection of paletas and various ice creams (I didn't check out that area), as well as a menu that includes some savory items. My main gripe is how disorganized the interior setup is--you're supposed to enter the payment line/queue straight from the door, but all the flavors are on the sides of the registers, and not posted anywhere on the hanging menu. This caused a crowd of mass confusion, as people would (understandably) flock to the flavor selection and consequently order there, technically cutting in front of those waiting in line to order and pay. My group got three flavors of paletas: Strawberry Horchata - fantastic and recommended by the employee Ube Brownie - my favorite, though a bit TOO studded with brownie chunks for my taste. I've spent way more at other ice cream joints, and gotten way less joy. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable, the product is top-notch, and my daughter (who, let's be real, is a popsicle queen she'd live off them if she could) says the only thing missing is a slightly smaller popsicle size (she's not a fan of the paper tray).
