I've been eating a lot of local-style food recently, since I'm fending for myself for the next few weeks. Today, for a change, I thought to come here for some genuine Korean food. Palama Snack Corner is inside the Palama Supermarket building on Makaloa St. It's on the right as you enter and has a fair number of tables and chairs. I wanted something different from the local-style meat-and-gravy dishes of late -- so I chose the Yuk Gae Jang, to wake up my taste buds. The cashier today at the Snack Corner was the same one who often rang me up on the Supermarket side. I joked, "I thought you only worked on the other side." It was nice seeing a familiar face here. I took a seat and scrolled through my phone. I figured it might take a while if they were making it from scratch. After several minutes, my number was called. The Yuk Gae Jang was as I expected. I'm so used to Korean food that I don't know what "spicy" means anymore -- but the soup had a nice reddish color and wasn't bland. I tasted the soup, then mixed rice into it, which is how we often eat Korean soup at home. Besides the rice, there were kimchi and some cooked cabbage. And wrapped separately, there was some thick "long rice" (dangmyeon), which I added to the soup. It was a pretty filling and enjoyable meal. Update 06/28/2025: While my overall experience on 06/15/2025 was positive, this was probably due in part to the competent and polished cashier working that day. This morning was quite different. I went with the idea of ordering mandu guksu. I saw "Hot Kooksoo" on the board, but no guksu with mandu. Just to be sure, I asked the woman at the counter, "I see guksu, but don't you have mandu guksu?" She responded, "What do you mean? It's there--#11." I had seen that item earlier, but it read "Duk Mandoo Gook," which is something else entirely. I said, "There's no guksu in that." She didn't respond, so I said "never mind" and left. My feeling was that she was unnecessarily rude, but in retrospect, I understand that mine was probably a non-routine question for her. Had she answered a little more objectively, I might have settled for hot guksu, even though it wasn't my first choice. However, after that interaction, I lost my craving for mandu guksu and walked over to Don Quijote to pick up something else for lunch instead. My intention in posting this update is to show that not everyone's ordering experience will go as smoothly as mine did earlier. read more

The food court at the Palama Supermarket has some hidden gems. Fish & Rice is awesome, Vons Chicken is solid, and you can add Palama Snack Corner to the list. Parking at Palama Supermarket can be difficult depending on the time, but let's just say I've never had to park on the second level as many customers come and go. The food court is to your right when you enter, and Palama Snack Corner is in the back....corner. There's a good amount of tables, and it's surprisingly comfortable. Ok, on my first time here, it was pretty obvious the Korean lady at the front did not exude friendliness and patience, or have excellent active listening skills if you're not speaking Korean. In these cases, I normally try to be overly friendly, loud, clear, and throw in some small jokes. I'll just say it did not work lol. The menu here is your typical Korean fare--from Bulgogi to Kalbi, to Meat Jun, Bibimbap, Soondubu, and etc. The Palama Special offers two choices of meat (Kalbi, BBQ Chicken, Meat Jun, and Bulgogi). I actually ordered this twice, and different meats both times. The first thing is they give A LOT of food. 1 plate will last you at least two meals. The Kalbi is always good. Tender, tasty, flavorful, and delicious with an excellent sear. BBQ Chicken was okay. They were tasty, but slightly tough and dry. The Bulgogi was surprisingly very good. The meat looked thicker than usual, but it was quite tender and flavorful. Meat Jun was the favorite. Tender, thin sliced beef dipped in flour and egg, and pan fried to perfection. They give you a lot too. The accompanying sauce is delicious. Savory, sweet, with a hint of Korean spice. These plates comes with two Banchan sides--Kim chee, of course. This was more so savory and a little spicy. Didn't have the zing. One time had bean curd, which was really good. Soft and soaked up the tasty sauce. Another time was broccoli, which was light and a nice balance to the mounds of meat. Also tried the bibim gooksoo (Korean Mixed Cold Noodles). This was OK. Probably wouldn't order this again. Very one note, boring, and just felt like whatevers. Cold noodles mixed with Kim chee and sauce and some thin strips of cucumber and a minuscule portion of bulgogi. It tasted good, but it's basically just noodles. Overall, this Korean Snack Corner is a decent place to get your usual Korean fare with more than acceptable food at an affordable price and generous portions. They also do catering/party pans. Service is fine. Just be decisive and clear, and be prepared to wait a little extra as it looks like there's only one cook, one out front, and 1-2 prep cooks. read more

Lunch in Honolulu, Hawaii... It was a warm 88°F day in August. I needed to eat something before my next appointment. I remembered that there was a vendor at the Food Court at Palama Supermarket that I hadn't visited yet. I parked in the free parking lot on Makaloa Street and entered the nicely air-conditioned grocery store. Immediately to the right, there are four vendors that share the dining area. I walked all the way to the back and found Palama Snack Corner. After perusing the menu, #19 caught my attention. It was "Cold Noodles". I asked the cashier if it was spicy. She said, "No", so I paid $10, including tax for it! My meal came in a package, ready to go - with napkins, utensils, and containers of vinegar, hot mustard, and kimchi. Thin, chewy noodles were topped with a slice of apple, half of a hard-boiled egg, pickled Cucumber and daikon, and some seaweed. The sweet sour broth was in a separate bowl. It was fun to add a touch of vinegar to make the broth a bit more tart. I did eat all of the kimchi by rinsing it in the leftover broth to decrease the spiciness! I had a good experience here. I just realized that I've been loading all my foodie pics from the Palama Snack Corner in the wrong place, as I was adding my Yelp pics of my Korean grindages under - "Palama Market"! Ai-yai-yai! Please forgive a Bruddah..........only now he has edjumacated himself, hence this new review & reallocation of my pics to the Palama Snack Corner. The Snack Corner is basically to the right side of the store as you enter the Palama Market. The Snack Corner sells an array of Korean fast food dishes, but I usually come here just for my Korean BBQ Chicken plate. The food here (through my experience) is a hit or miss. Been Comin here for a few years now and good prices and food is good (usually). 5 star for value and 4 stars for the food Had a few times where they over cooked the chicken and it was dried out But the portions are huge and when you ballin on a budget it fits the bill. And this one is an authentic korean fast food version here in Hawaii. ~ Located inside the Palama market, I always passed by on this store. Didn't notice this much but one day my husband invited me to check this branch and maybe grab some goodies. But to our surprise they got few food stalls and we urge to check them. And this corner attracts us the most. ~ We ended up ordering bibim kooksoo and a kimbap then a side dish of kimchee. Delectable korean food and the price is very reasonable. Always a quick and convenient meal for takeout. I ordered my go to dishes which includes the bibim kooksoo, meat jun, and the spicy soft tofu soup. The food is always good and the flavor is always consistent. For those who order the soft tofu soup from other places this one is more seafood forward and has an egg cracked inside which makes it really good. The bibim kooksoo is one of my must orders for its spice and flavor that make it addicting. I usually share the noodles because it can get a bit spicy eating it all by yourself. I would say that the banchan has changed since the last time I've been here and they only give you two dishes. The sides were a zucchini kimchee and pickled seaweed. They did still have a seating area but it did not look like it was being monitored by someone in the store or that there was anyone ready to clean the tables. To celebrate New Year's, we decided to take out platters from Palama. They had good pricing and selection of items and although we didn't know how well their party platters tasted or were portioned, we were pleasantly surprised by both taste and portions! They are inside Palama Market, on the right side, as you enter. Parking, if you don't already know, is pretty chaotic during rush times... and this may vary. But typically, it seems during lunch time that they are very busy. Be prepared to wait for parking or to even get into the lot. They also have 2nd floor parking. We ordered the small Meat Jun, medium Chicken Katsu, and small Kimchi Fried Rice party platters. For about 6 people, we were able to eat 2 servings and even have a little leftover. (This was an office lunch so just imagine the eating habits in this setting.) The Meat Jun was good! The batter was not overwhelming, and the meat was very proportionate to it. Some places have a huge ratio of egg batter to meat, but Palama doesn't jip you like that. Since this was the small, it was only 2 layers of meat jun. The Chicken Katsu was very good as well. Very crispy and again, batter wasn't overwhelming to the chicken and complimented it so well with its crispiness. Tasty! Since it was a medium, they did have 2 layers plus the sides of the platter filled. The Kimchi Fried Rice was as expected - had a bit of spiciness with a blast of flavor. Interestingly, there was corn in the fried rice, which I really enjoyed. They also had spam in it. If you are vegetarian, make sure to ask to exclude this. But it had great flavor, lots of gochujang, which again, was not a problem for me. Prices are updated on their site but to give you an idea: small Meat Jun - $30, medium Chicken Katsu - $32 (there's no option for small), and small Kimchi Fried Rice - $30. I'd say it was ok in pricing. It is pretty good quality and well-portioned, so I'd say it is equated to its cost. Not the cheapest party platters in town but it was sure tasty and filling. Korean party platters are my favorite. It was a sure treat to have delicious Korean food before the New Year. Couldn't have asked for anything better. This will definitely be a choice in future office lunches and parties! Try it if you need party platters in a pinch! read more

Finally ate here for the first time. The food here are so cheap for Korean food. Usually they're priced at $14+, but it ranges from $7.50 and on depending what you order. Anyways, we ordered 2 kalbi plates ($12 each), bbq chicken plate ($7.50), Bi Bim Bap ($7.50), and 15pcs of fried mandoo ($3.50). Although you don't really get to choose your side veggies, but still, that's frekking cheap and the food is better than average. The portions are pretty huge too. They also sell those yummy Korean sushis, but they're sold on the market side. It's located inside of the Palama Market across from Don Quijote in town. There are other little food establishments with a food court setting. The staff were not talkative much, but quick. They are opened everyday from 8:30AM-9:00PM which is nice. They also cater, but I don't know what the portions look like, but I'm sure it's a lot. read more

Palama Supermarket is a place I passed by countless times but never went inside. After discovering how fun it was a few months ago, I stop in from time to time to look for new Korean beer and snacks. I explored further the last time I was in and noticed the little food court to the right of the entrance. There are a few little stands: Bin's Mandoo, Vons Chicken, a snack place, and Palama Snack Corner, which is part of the grocery store. The menu items are priced cheaply and look great in the pictures. What really sold me was the food actual people were eating; everything is so colorful, hot, and presented nicely. All the people I dealt with were somewhat friendly, don't expect a warm greeting. There were lots of people working, which I guess was preparing for a dinner rush. Food here is made fresh to order, so don't expect it to be fast. Portions are big for the price and everything tasted like good quality meats and vegetables. I had the bulgogi plate which included sprouts, fish cakes, a heaping helping of rice, and kimchi. I found the Korean food here to be very authentic. I swear, every person standing in line was Korean, except for me. I ordered what I always order at every Korean place, kalbi. Oh, how I love me some kalbi! The kalbi was marinated in a great tasting sauce. It's on the sweeter side, which I prefer. It was tender and easy to chew. It was $12 for three pieces with rice, kim chee, bean sprouts, and radish. You can get another piece of kalbi for $4 more. Everything was good. My only complaint is that you don't get a choice of sides. It comes with what it comes with. You don't get a choice of shoyu or mayo potatoes, long rice, or choy sum. The prices at this place are very attractive, several $ less than you would spend at any other similar place. Kalibi plate $15, though you don't get to pick sides. They give you two sides of whatever they have that day and not a ton like u get from local style Korean plate lunch. The spicy noodles (bibimguksu) is really good here too. Oops, I just realized that I may have posted a review under a different location of Palama Snack Corner! oh but they're both super awesome! We love Korean food so much, and this place is so reasonably priced and tasty. We've catered from here a few times for small parties, and I've never been disappointed. This time, I tried a few new dishes: mixed jun platter, which for $40 came with large pieces of kim chee, zucchini, chives, seafood, and fish; meat jun, mandoo (came with 120 pieces for $30! they also stayed crispy for hours!); barbeque chicken; and very tasty spicy squid ($40). I didn't know if I would have enough guests to eat the dishes, but I knew that we'd be able to enjoy the leftovers days after! We also cut up the pieces of chicken and jun into smaller pieces so that people could enjoy more dishes. Love the variety! I was honestly a bit hesitant about the mix jun because it isn't crispy, and the bentos that sell these dishes in the store don't look that good. But they were really yummy! And when I crisped the leftovers up in the oven, they were amazing! They gave a generous portion of meat jun sauce, though the meat was flavorful even without the sauce. With the leftover sauce, I added firm tofu, and it became the easiest side dish ever! I've also enjoyed their plate of kalbi ($12 for 3 pieces), which was tender and tasty. Hooray for cheap eats!! After shopping at Palama, it's a must pick up lunch from here. If you're a fan of soondabu or soybean stew look no further, this is the cheapest you'll probably get. Prices range from $6-$8 with a wide selection of different dishes. All soups and stews comes with sides and rice. My go to's are usually the soondabu or the soybean stew. Their soondabu does have seafood in it such as clams and shrimp so just a heads up if you're allergic. I decided to be adventurous the last time and tried the cold noodle. It was quite interesting because it had pieces of ice and apples in it. Their cold noodle was refreshing because it was hot but the sauce had a little too much vinegar taste for me to handle. I love Korean food but I definitely dislike the price of Korean food nowadays! I found Palama Snack Corner when me and my coworkers went on a lunch break. Their Korean food is good and doesn't have outrageous prices for a plate. I bought a BBQ Chicken for $7 flat. It also came with 3 sides, rice and a generous portion of chicken. The chicken was good, comparable to any other Korean chicken I've had.... I don't understand why other places' prices are so expensive... anyways... My friend also got a Kim Chee Stew that came with rice and 3 sides for $7!!!! It looked super bomb. Overall, I definitely think this is an awesome place for affordable Korean food! I absolutely love this place for very quick, basic, and good value Korean classics like bibimbop and tofu soup. This place is off to the side of the Palama Supermarket when you first walk in the door. Make sure you know what you want to order before getting in line. The board is big enough to read at a distance. They are quick in processing your order and expect you to be quick in giving your order. It isn't unfriendly, just a "move it" environment. Everything is good and made fresh. The turn around from order to tray is amazing. Food comes out hot and well plated. Portions are just right to fill you up or have a little left over for later. The best thing is the price. It is affordable and a good value. These days that is really hard to find. Besides, you know the food has to be good because of all the Korean Aunties working so hard in the kitchen. Another good thing is the healthy options. There are the fatty and protein typical plates, but lots of other options to pick from as well. Korean food in general has always given me a feeling of being healthier they other foods because of the amount of vegetables they use. The dinning area is a typical shared dinning area that can get a little unkept looking during busy periods, but I personally feel that is a lot cleaner then a mall food court and don't mind just wiping down my table with an extra napkin, so suck it up if you're a germaphobe or to be safe, just do take out and enjoy where ever makes you feel most comfortable. I do eat here frequently and do highly recommend checking it out if you never have been and enjoy good Korean food. read more

When you first enter Palama market on your right, and you move past the drinks store, there's an adjacent store that's got over 39 different things for its menu. I tried the jajangmyeon...completely tasteless. (Zero flavor)There was even BONE in it!!! I thought it. I also bought the mandoo soup. Both the jajangmyeon and mandoo soup cost 9 dollars each. It was my first experience to come here and turned out to be a nightmare. Yesterday evening (Jan 3rd 2020), I went to two counters, Vons Kitchen and Palama Snack Corner (Palama Snack Corner shown in picture). I have no problem with Vons Kitchen hence the one star I gave here. Chickens are delicious and the lady was so friendly. But it was the opposite in Palama Snack Corner. I don't know if it is because of my physical appearance but I can't help feeling they are being very racist. This is because they didn't show the same service to me and to other customers. They left me when I asked question, they said I should pay in cash where other customers after me are allowed to pay with card, and when I handed the cash the lady even checked if my dollar bill is real or not. This I found VERY offensive. I saw other customers were not treated this way. If this is because I don't look Korean or I'm not white then shame on them. I asked what size is the rice bowl and they didn't even look at me. With their back and without even looking they just raise the rice bowl. I am so disappointed for a place like Hawaii to still find many racism people especially in an Asian supermarket where Asian supposed to be more diverse (and I'm Asian too). Can't review anything about the food since I only ordered rice. Cancelled my plan to order other food because of the poor service. read more

My favorite place for basic Korean food! I live so close to here, so I come here pretty often, almost once a week...my Korean food cravings are strong. I also grocery shop in Palama too! They don't charge for tax on the snack corner side too. The things I get most often are their cold noodles ($6), tofu stew ($8), bibimbap ($7) and their spicy fried chicken ($7). Their serving size is great, especially for the price...you can def split it for your lunch and dinner! I recommend calling in your phone order... sometimes they take a while since they get pretty busy especially during peak hours. The service here might not be the best, but it's always a grab and go for me and the ladies at the counters have to deal with the other ahjummas complaining... so I get if they aren't in their best mood. The prices of Korean food keeps going up on the island but Palama keeps their prices low and their food soooo good. Never change! read more

I was innocently shopping at Palama Supermarket last night when I noticed the line! The combination of impending doom from Hurricane Iselle and lots of places being closed must have brought all the people. I was curious and hungry so I stopped by and had a gander. After seeing the cheap prices, I joined the line. I had to wait at least 10 minutes to get to the front. Since I'm trying to be healthy, I settled on the BBQ Chicken plate. A full-sized plate was priced at only $7! Wait time to receive my food was about 15 minutes. I did not mind as I wanted to catch up on my phone notifications and I was too lazy to make food at home. My number was called and I was excited. I love food! The portion size is generous. You get 3 large pieces of slightly burnt, well-marinated chicken, about two cups of white rice, corn with a little cheese on top, kim chee, bean sprouts, and cabbage. I will definitely stop by again when I'm secretly shopping for spicy noodle bowls that don't belong in my diet. read more

Nice selection of readymade foods and reasonable... however.....too much sugar made some of the dishes too sweet - it's not healthy all that sugar! Tried telling them but they don't seem to hear me or not understand. And the Korean style sushi lately is not as good as before, something changed and I see that it has sweet takuan, made it taste weird. I tried the pig's feet, it's mostly bones and hard grit that you can't even chew, taste was good but not worth the price of almost $8...for bones?!!! They should charge at least half of that considering it's almost all bones with little meat. I have stopped buying these ready-made take outs. This particular Palama Snack Corner location always had slow and bad service but today was the worst. I called in a phone order for a party platter 2 hours ahead of time. When I arrived at the pick up time, they seemed a little confused on my order and asked me to sit and wait. 30 minutes later, my order finally came out at the same time I went up to cancel my order and ask for a refund. The manager offered an insulting 10% discount. Really? 10%? I got my full refund instead. And now I'm late for my party. This Palama better get their shit together. read more

A friend of mine took me here after a volleyball game, and since he raves about the good food at reasonable prices, I figured "what the hell." Not bad, not great ...... ya know, somewhere in the middle. The portions are good for the price: $7 - $12 depending on what you get. Quality ~ delicious (but not really spicy for me, could use more heat), meaty and not fatty, grilled flavor. Quantity ~ good portion size + kimchee/little veggies included. Just ordered catering for class party 4 days in advance (only day required) so will see how that turns out (and if 5 stars is truly deserved)...$35 total for spicy pork (small tray-$20) + fried mandoo (60pcs-$15). Update (10/29): picked up my catered food right on the dot as they promised. Portion size was excellent for small tray. Lots and lots of pork and mandoo...so much I was able to still take some home after the party! #FTW read more

If you are ever craving Korean but a bit lost with the menu's then this is a great spot with all the pics of their offerings. But it seems to be a very hit and miss spot for me. I'm a big fan of the Spicy Squid because of the flavor (think the spicy paste they use is standard but tasty). Then finally ventured into the Tofu-Soup (Sundubu) after a friends recommendation... it fell into the average category (I've had this in Korea, Tokyo, LA). It will hit the spot if you want a little guilt free low calorie Tofu Soup. Then... it was time to move onto the Kimchee Soup. My indications that the Kimchee here is rather old is the frequent sighting of gray spots all over the lettuce they use. I can only assume it is old and they get a great deal from the bordering Palama Supermarket veggie isle. After one taste of the Kimchee soup my first reaction was super sour... there were pieces of pork inside that failed to impress as most were fatty and few still had shards of bones (thought I lost a tooth but later realized it was pork bones). Overall the Kimchee soup kinda sucked... I won't be back for this. I finally realized that all the customers around me were speaking either Chinese or English and I rarely saw any Korean customers here... I guess real Korean foodies don't hit this spot. Tried their Ugeoji Galbi Tang (Cabbage Kalbi Soup) today. It was really, really good! Even my Korean bf approved! I'm sold! It is part of their new menu, but I hope it's not just seasonal and stays around longer because I don't think I can find this dish anywhere else. Okay.. I went back even after being mistreated by the employees because I had to pick up food for my parents. There is a very sweet Korean lady who works the register now and answers the phone. She is SO nice! She says thank you and remembers me when I come to pick up my food (ok.. I've been back more than once! Lol) The mood is much different at the counter without the rude attitude. My mom was addicted to the BiBimKookSoo so she decided to buy it for me one day because I love BiBimKookSoo too! Oh my gosh.. it is REALLY spicy so that is your warning. I LOVE spicy food but this is like "lighting my tongue on fire" kind of spicy lol It is such a steal for $5.50 but it doesn't come with much meat.. the trade off is that it comes with a TON of noodles. I decided to get the spicy pork and bibimkooksoo to share with my mom and it was a really deadly choice because the spicy pork AND bibimkooksoo were spicy!! I warn you.. ask for mild if you cannot stand intense spicy-ness. All in all I am happier with the service. I hope they keep that sweet korean lady at the counter because that will be my key to coming back :) read more

We had their authentic Kalbi cabbage soup and Meat jun for dinner. Super loved the onolicious authentic soup! And they are reasonably priced with NO tax charged. read more
