Leaving out to head back to sunny Florida after 4 days of rain at Old Orchard Beach we looked up this place which was voted best place to eat. Caution they are very busy and due to this place being an actual old time dinning rail car, seating is very limited. So get your name on list, then walk around town checking out the architecture, or you can stop off at Senator Susan Collins office as it's right around the corner. Wait list is done via text message, so no worries of missing your place in line. We got seated and if you're a + size person know this the only seating is those swivel stools that you would find at The Woolworth deli counter. Rubbing elbow to elbow with strangers. Okay so that's the bad part good part is the food is worth the trip, wait and rubbing butt cheeks with a stranger. Can't report on breakfast, although it look really good. If you have read any of my reviews I am a burger guy so to pass up the chance would be a sin. I am excited to announce that it was a truly a tasty burger. A Royal with Cheese and a $4.00 coffee, yes $4.00 coffee. Be prepared to spend a Kings Ransom, bring cash or Bit Coin as they don't take plastic unless you are order to go. So if you want the miles on your CC and don't want to wait order from the app grab your food and sit at the outdoor seating area. Cheers! read more

Got there at 7:30 for the 8:00 opening and we're #7 and #8 in line, but that's part of the fun, believe it or not. Good conversations with like minded folks. A stack of flapjacks had thick but yielding discs with an alluring pan pattern, served with whipped butter and real maple syrup (already on the counter; no need to even ask). Lighter than they looked, and slightly tart from the buttermilk and lemon juice/zest, they really hit the spot. A side of crisp, juicy sausage (two patties) paired nicely. Burgers for breakfast? Say the words and they're yours. The Royale is an elevated Big Mac, with all the same ingredients, only sourced and executed dozens of times better. Notable differences beyond the obvious: buttered/griddled bun and superior juice flow despite the twin thin patties. Included crisp, well-salted, piping hot, skin-on fries were perfect. Though solid, the burger didn't wow like the fried chicken sandwich, which literally made me say "wow" more than a few times even though I was only sharing a portion of it. This behemoth is brined a day in advance to make the juiciness match the crunch. An interesting slaw, jalapeños, a few dashes of Tabasco sauce, and a densely sesame seeded bun all contributed to the masterful production that I'm calling the lead highlight from a visit filled with several. With the lines and reputation Palace Diner has, it would be easy to get away with hipster detachment or attitude, but service was first rate throughout. Quality coffee and water arrived instantly and got replenished throughout the meal before needing to ask. Conversation was friendly and natural. Extremely nice people and always ahead of the game. These are pros in action. With only around 15 counter stools and no tables, the quarters are cramped, so make the most of it by making new friends. You'll wind up comparing notes and sharing tips if not actual food, which is how I wound up trying some home fried potato that'll definitely get a second look next time. Hyped? Sure, but well deserved and then some. Can't wait to go back. read more

It's places like Palace Diner that have brought more tourists and higher dining prices to the Portland area, and for that, I want to hate it. The problem is though, it's impossible to hate Palace diner. The people that work here are the friendliest people in America. They deal with hungry, pre-coffee people all day, yet they are unbelievably welcoming and kind. The restaurant itself is just as loveable as the people, as the restored diner car is like a happy trip back in time (complete with decade-appropriate music). And I haven't even started talking about the food... Palace Diner has been written up nationally for its amazing breakfast and lunch fare. I've tried a lot of things on the menu and all of them have been worth the praise. I've eaten pancakes all over this country (and Canada) and I can say that Palace's flapjacks are the best I've ever had. Usually, the maple syrup is the best part of the pancake, but not here, where they don't even need syrup. I'm also a huge fan of the grilled banana bread, the grapefruit, and the tuna sandwich. My only complaint, the prices. If you are going to charge that much for breakfast, you should at least take credit cards. With food that good though, it doesn't really matter, the people will still come (including me). read more

I appreciate how well run the wait list is handled. They only have about 13 stools at the counter, so it's important to manage this as precisely as you can. We put in our name and were told it would be about 45 minutes...it was 43 minutes. The food is as awesome as I was told to expect. We had flapjacks, eggs, toast, potatoes. Everything was very good. Service was awesome. I would go back often if I lived nearby. read more

Food was very good but the prices were absurd... our server was very nice. It is literally just a tiny bar that you belly up to bit that is part of the experience. It's simply just way too pricey for what you get (IMO)... in all honesty, there are so many greats places to choose from, we probably won't be back. read more

A cozy little diner, though we were only inside briefly. 40 minute wait on a Monday at 1:00 so we ordered takeout via an efficient app. Missed the diner experience. There were some tables behind the diner that worked fine. The highly regarded tuna melt was very good. The bread was grilled. There was a lot of iceberg lettuce that made the sandwich a bit sloppy. The breakfast sandwiches were the stars. I got a bite of my wife's. It was perfectly composed. I never would have thought to put jalapeños on a breakfast sandwich, but it was awesome. The eggs had a Japanese custardy consistency. The French toast was tempting, but didn't seem like a fun thing for takeout. We arrived on a Thur. morning finding a 1 hour 45 min. wait. It was super hot and we were hungry so we passed. On the return, we called ahead and ordered to go. We dined outside in the patio. It was a wonderful breakfast. To the food, we ordered the flapjacks. They were fluffy and light. The real maple syrup and whipped butter complimented the flavors. The tuna melt was absent of cheese and had way too much mayo in the tuna salad and on the bread. The bread was tasty good. We devoured our sandwich. A great experience all around. read more

Can't say enough about this place. It's a 14 seat diner car that has been in almost the exact same spot for almost 100 years! The current ownership has provided a more elevated and unique menu that gives you nice portions of ridiculously delicious food! Their breakfast is epic...whether you go with the omelet of the day, or the breakfast sandwich, which sounds simple, but trust me, it will be the best you've ever had...you can't go wrong. Then there is lunch, and the outrageous chicken sandwich. This thing is massive, and incredibly tasty. They run out of them often later in the day, so if you want one get there early! It's a fun place to go. There's often a wait with such a small place, but they have a system to automatically text you when they have seats for you. They do a great job of quickly cleaning up when someone leaves and getting the next people in, while not ever pressuring anyone to leave. read more

Came here because I had suddenly heard a bunch of good things about it. SO had never been either so we came and found it to be easy to find seating among the 15 or so seats at the bar. The menu is petite and we split a lumberjack....Glad we did because their sand dollar pancakes were basically regular sized ones and pretty much cooked to perfection. The home fries were so unique..Basically fried potatoes that were smashed once and their eggs were creamy and delish. It's a bit pricey for a diner but to try once if you like breaking your fast with this kind of food is probably worth it. read more

Back in the day they knew the secret to customer service - by having a simple set up with nothing but a comfortable stool at the bar followed by great food. We were served by Megan, a doll that let us in on a little secret: their buttermilk flapjacks have a hint of lemon! Came here with my brother for a weekend breakfast. The diner is small so we had to wait a bit, but luckily there was complementary coffee while we waited. In regards to the food, I would come back here in a heartbeat. We split everything and we could have kept eating. Perfect spot for breakfast and lunch. Small menu but everything is done the way it should be. It's so rare when you order over medium eggs that you actually get over medium so naturally I am now in love with this place. I never order corned beef hash but I just had a feeling they'd do it right here, and I wasn't disappointed. So cute inside too. There's only about 12 seats, so service is quick. Probably the best pancakes I have had. Maybe ever. Real maple syrup. Taylor ham. What's not to love? Advice. The portions are large, so (for me) a two-stack was plenty. ONE slice of (very thick) french toast for my wife was also plenty. Also, there are no tables and only maybe 15 seats at the counter in this antique diner so prepare to wait. But it's worth it. Some of the best food I've ever had in my life. Went in expecting a cool old school diner car experience, ended up being even more impressed by how simple but fantastic the food is. Came once for breakfast and back again the next day for lunch. The pancakes, breakfast sandwich, potatoes, French toast, and burger were all solid 10/10s. Honorable mention to the Banana bread. The pancakes had a very subtle lemon flavor that was super unique. Big fan all around, husband and wife servers were also very nice and helpful. Over all great vibes and amazing food. Very limited seating here so you'll probably have to put your name in and wait but it's worth it. We were told about an hour wait both times but ended up getting in 10 minutes. Wouldn't recommend coming with a party larger than 4. read more

Original 1920's Diner, small (only seats 15), but Fantastic breakfast & very friendly staff. Had the Lumberjack Breakfast (Delicious scrambled eggs, Home fries, Taylor Ham & silver dollar pancakes) , food came out quickly, staff kept making sure, nothing else was needed. Would highly recommend! Only downside is I'm a bigger guy, and the seats are pretty tight read more

The Palace Diner was built in Lowell Mass. in '26, moved to Biddeford in '27, and has been on Franklin St. ever since. Reopened in March of 2014, the diner continues to serve American classics to hungry patrons at its 15 seat linoleum counter.
