Whenever we go to Southern Maine we always eat at the Maine Diner and this past weekend was no exception. We were a party of 6 and we were all disappointed with our meals and the overall experience. 2 people ordered breakfast, 2 people ordered seafood and 2 people ordered sandwiches so we had a variety of foods. The seafood was the most disappointing. The portions were small and they did not enjoy the food. I had an open faced turkey sandwich and the only thing I enjoyed on the plate were the mashed potatoes. It was such a disappointing experience that we will not return. read more

This is an institution in Wells. The prices are fair, they have the classic breakfast or you can get a lobstah Benedict if that is your jam, and the staff is awesome. If you are in southern Maine, you have to make the trip. You will not regret the trip. read more

We visited the Maine Diner on Wednesday and was disappointed to learn they are closed on Wednesdays?! We went back the following day and had breakfast with a family of 5. My understanding is that the Maine Diner is an institution in the area. For years I've seen their advertisements on television and I've seen them get all kinds of recognition on local and national food shows. We went in for a quick breakfast on a Tuesday at about 11:30 on our way home from Maine, just before they began to fill up. Definitely seems like a spot that both tourists and locals alike flock to. We ordered a chili cheese omelette and blueberry pancakes. The omelette was alright, though nothing to write home about as the chili wasn't my favorite. The homefries looked good but turned out to not be as seasoned and flavorful as they looked. The pancakes were the best thing, very thick and you get a generous portion, but they could've used slightly more blueberry flavor in my opinion. For the most part it's very run of the mill diner fare in a very simple atmosphere. I've been waiting to go here for years. It's a diner on the side of the road. It's cute outside, and is packed with people inside. Our server was incredibly sweet. When she saw my dad taking a picture of my mother and me she grabbed his phone and took a picture of all three of us. I got the meal that had seafood chowder, lobster pie, with good potato salad and coleslaw, and dessert (blueberry ice cream, so good!). It was the ultimate Maine dining experience. All the food and service was great. The only unfortunate part was that we were charged for an extra lobster pot pie meal. I tried contacting the business several times, and my name and number was taken by one person, another, after I knew I needed to speak to the owner, told me he was always really busy. Nice little meal here. Not really my favorite stop, but I do fear that I screwed this one up and it wasn't on them. It happens.... It's got the old diner feel to it, for sure.... You get the nostalgia of the place as soon as you walk in. After I ordered, I had buyers remorse as I had not gotten some of the more famous things this place had. I am now still upset as I type this. The Lobster Pie and some of the namesake lobster sandwiches would have probably been much better than what I had. I did good keeping it contained, I don't think C even picked up on it as I am mastering my ability to have internal meltdowns with no external visibility. C did learn something here.... She likes baked beans on toast.... We are now looking for ways to get this elsewhere. We live in Memphis, so it's not that common. So we now ask for toast at BBQ places. Amazing diner experience. Was visiting from California and stopped by since it was featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. It has your classic old school dinner feel, with the friendliest staff, and stellar food. We had to try so many things as they are famous for multiple items - loved the seafood chowder, lobster pie, blueberry pie, and blueberry chip ice cream. Came here on a Monday morning and had a great experience! If you are looking for a little diner this is a great option! The menu has a variety of breakfast and lunch options. Our waiter was so friendly and we were able to be seated immediately. Parking was also very easy. I was feeling more lunch so I ordered a cup of She-crab soup and a side of homemade codfish cake. Guy fieri has been here and he fried the codfish cake so I had to too!! I loved both of these! I thought they were great. Every year, we look forward to a lobster roll and seafood chowder at the Maine Diner. Unfortunately, the food quality has dropped. The seafood chowder no longer has its buttery taste, and the cold lobster roll was dry (no mayo) and the bun was toasted but not grilled with butter. The lobster did not seem fresh. It appeared to be thawed. Service was good and the ambiance okay. Overall, it was a mediocre experience. Last year we noticed the quality was not the same but decided to give it another chance. Came here for lunch around 1230pm. Just at the peak of service. Waited a few minutes for a table but were contacted quickly by the server. Drinks came stock as did the chowders. Got the seafood chowder and the clam chowder. Clam chowder was very thick, a little thicker than I am used to. Saw later on while eating the server scooping chowder from the pot behind the register and you could tell it was thick and also running low as she dipped the Kassel in pretty far to scoop some chowder. Seafood chowder was good. Ordered a cheeseburger and thought it came with lettuce and tomatoes but I was wrong. Just came plain with cheese. What a disappointment! I was looking forward to a special meal for my wife and it was the wrong kind of special. She ordered their signature lobster pie and I ordered the diner staple, biscuits and gravy. The lobster pie was literally cool in the center. They didn't make this from scratch, they got it out of the cooler. Twice baking lobster turns it chewy and robs the flavor. Meanwhile the biscuits were room temperature and the gravy not much warmer. Welcome to the Maine Diner, a staple in Wells, Maine serving quality food at reasonable prices! You can also get breakfast anytime!! I've been visiting this spot since I was a kid and have fond memories. I remember waiting an hour for a table some mornings due to its popularity (luckily this morning there was no wait). This time around I ordered one of their combo plates, the Aces High. It came with everything I was craving, one egg, one strip of bacon, one sausage, toast, AND a blueberry pancake. Everything was delicious, but the star of the show was definitely the pancake, so fricken good. We went with our 4 kids. Mid afternoon, but still busy. Got us a taxable in about 20 minutes. Kids were all happy, as there are plenty of options. My wife and I split the triple D meal. The lobster pit was the winner. It reminded me of a good baked haddock w a cracker topping, done perfectly without too much butter. Tons of big lobster chunks. The seafood chowder was thin, but had excellent flavor. The cod cake was actually good as well, but did not stand up to the others. No matter what, I will always have a soft spot for The Maine Diner. When I was a kid and my family would vacation in Maine every summer, we would always stop here to eat at least twice per trip. Their Meatloaf Madness Mondays is ingrained in my memory, and over the years they have become somewhat of a destination eatery. While its reputation as a family-owned establishment serving its own grown produce made it a local favorite, they have been featured in several publications as well as Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives which has increased their exposure on a national level. Despite its fame, the Diner is very no frills - it's not large at all, and almost has a boxcar setup with a rectangular dining room with the kitchen back center. They're most famous for their Lobster Pie and seafood chowder - and along with a selection of New England fare, they have staple diner selections and serve breakfast all day. So with all of this, why 3 stars? Well, it dates back to around 10 years ago during my first trip to Maine as an adult - I ate here and didn't have the best experience. I don't fully remember if it was me giving them the benefit of the doubt or my own nostalgia, but I gave them a 4. During my most recent trip to Maine, I came here again for lunch and overall just had an average experience. The diner looks tired - the carpets needed to be vacuumed and the booth we sat in was uncomfortable. Additionally, when we were seated my brother noticed sand and food on the seat - they really should have cleaned it off. The food was fine - I had a turkey club which was inoffensive - the sandwich was solid. My brother had the soup and half-sandwich, but I found it weird that the soup came out first along with my other brother's corn muffin, and then the half sandwich was served when all of our mains came. Service was good, food came out relatively fast and everyone was friendly. Overall though, I think I'm finished with Maine Diner. If I was staying in Wells or Kennebunk(port) then I would come here for breakfast, but I wouldn't go out of my way to return. It wouldn't be a complete trip to Maine without stopping at the Diner! The interior looks like a 1950's diner, that is clean and bright. The food is always excellent, no matter what you order. 5 years since my last review! This morning my husband and I stopped in for breakfast since we were in the area. 7 am on a Monday morning in January, it was dead. The establishment is beginning to look a bit run down and dated. Could use some updating for sure. We walked in and were immediately greeted. We were told to sit where we liked. Within a minute a kind waitress was there to take drink orders. We browsed the menu, there is a fair amount of options at decent prices for the area. Our order was taken and we waited for our food. Do not recommend, don't fall for the Guy Fieri gimmick, you will get totally ripped off. You walk in and you don't get greeted or seated, probably because they don't have enough servers for the amount of tables, the servers they do have are in a rush but I suppose that's on par with a diner. My boyfriend and I sat at the bar and I will personally say it just didn't feel clean, when the server placed my cup of water down I immediately got the ick when I saw how old and stained the cup was...I hope they toss that cup out. The biggest mistake I made was ordering the soup of the day with a half sandwich, let's just say I felt like I was eating prison food...white bread, a big ass piece of lettuce, and two slices of turkey...lord have mercy for $10? the soup was super mid too there was like 2 pieces of beef in the whole soup :/ I honestly feel worse for my boyfriend who ordered the ruben sandwich,he must've been served the worst cut of pastrami with the texture of rubber bands, he couldn't even bite through it, it was basically inedible and I did try some myself and I resisted the urge to gag like that's how awful the texture was. Once we ordered our breakfast it was out in a flash. The server was very good and the food equally pleasing.
