We two had high expectations for dinner given the recommendations from guidebooks and lodging hosts. The experience was well below expectations. FOOD: 2.0. - 1.0: Soft-shell crab appetizer. Was not delicious parts of the crab, but rather the bitter portions that other places would discard -- or at least not deep fry and present. (Maybe this is Portuguese?). As the first food we had, it set a negative tone for the rest of the meal. - 3.5: Octopus main (served with broccolini and potatoes). She rated it a 3.5, I rated it a 4.0. But given that she is from a seafood-eating Asian island country and I am from the canned-tuna-is-seafood upper Great Lakes region of the US, I conclude she knows better than me. I did like the texture, and it was a generous amount of octopus. - Dessert: no rating; decided to not risk it after the experience with the appetizer and main. WINE: 4.0. We both liked the rosé wine we chose. SERVICE: 3.0. Started poorly, which (along with the appetizer) set the tone for the experience. We had reservations, and were the first people seated in the first room (with the suspended gold-colored lion), yet we were seated at the worst table: right at the entrance. After the appetizer we asked to switch tables, and our wish was thankfully granted. Call-out to the young woman who was not our server, but poured us the last of our bottle of wine; she had a wonderful smile, which was all the more precious because smiles were rare among the staff. That smile was worth half a star. AMBIANCE: 3.5. Relatively attractive interior. There was an unattractive perfumy aroma that detracted from the dining. My partner eventually (we think) traced it down to (at least one) "Aroma Club" machine inside the building. A splashy elegant dining experience awaits upstairs which is absolutely unexpected from the rather shabby even rough looking street level bar. Inside an aristocratic townhouse still in the original family. Ambience superb. Every corner has a feast for the eyes. The bartenders are well versed in mixology. We finally found a place that can satisfy these wayward Californians quest for a decent margarita in Europe. The selection offered on the menu covers every palate. We had a mix of nouveau Portuguese and traditional with a twist, every plate a winner. Service is pleasant, a bit more relaxed for the price point, but then dining is just slower in Portugal, the problem is me. Wine selection very nice. We dressed up for the evening as this was fine dining but it is so "social media" advertised that the clientele now looks like mostly tourists and dressed much more casual. So worry not about dress code. Uber or taxi is not easy to pick up at the door as the townhouse is on a two lane avenue that is very busy. Possible dashing across the street may occur. One of the best meals we had while visiting Portugal. From when you first walk in, the decor and ambiance is amazing. The service is more than exceptional. We had an amazing waiter who was super helpful and attentive. The chili shrimp with Guanciale was advised as spicy, but it definitely was mild, still delicious shrimp. I had the cod, 2 ways, and was told to eat one before the other to experience different flavors and textures. My partner got the prawn risotto and he said it was one of the best risottos he's ever had in his life. We got a bottle of wine to split with the meal and it was reasonably priced overall. Great last minute find! Thankfully I was able to get a table right away on a night when they were booked. The restaurant is in a converted palace - which is beautiful! Each dining room has a different theme. My server "Mia" was very knowledgeable on the menu and the wine list! I simply gave her an idea of my preferences and she ordered for me... and everything was fantastic! Her assistant - Filipe was also very attentive (it was his first night!)... I ordered the 30 euro ribs: I've had better ribs on an airplane (the sauce was probably a week old), they gave me three sprigs of broccolini and the fries were greasy. The tuna tataki was essentially inedible; the sauce tasted like it came out of a can and was spread over room temperature slimy fish and accompanied by almost gray green beans, yet it cost 30 euros. And the service was just awkward. Also you have to go up and down a staircase to locate the bathroom. Never again - but did get a good travel story out of it I guess? read more

We selected this restaurant to dine at for our wedding anniversary. This was a special occasion. Upon our arrival, we were impressed with the building and the décor. They are both outstanding. The cocktail menu was fun and interesting. For our main course we order the Lobster and the Turbot. The turbot was fine. However the lobster was extremely over cooked and had the texture of rubber. I called over the waitress and the maître d' and told them to take the dish back to the chef. They later came back and agreed that the dish was not executed properly. They explained that the executive chef was not on duty. The line cook who was cooking the dish knew he over cooked it but sent it out anyway. They offer us a free dessert (which we declined). What they should have done is comp the dish. At over 50 euros, it was the most expensive dish we ordered during our entire vacation. It was bad. The restaurant knew it was bad. AND THEY SERVED IT ANYWAY!!!! read more

A palace turned fancy food hall in the heart of Lisbon. This sounds like the stuff of dreams. The decor of Palacio Chiado does not disappoint. 4 girls out on the town on a Saturday night. After putting in our name and being told there was a 45-minute wait for a table (and this was at 10pm!), we found a stylish perch at the sparking wine bar located in the Golden Lion Room on the second floor. The grand staircase, stained glass, and lighting inside the palace bring you right into a Disney movie. And the plastic card they give you upon arrival that allows you to charge all you buy at any of the 8 restaurants gives you way too much oblivious power. Keep in mind that you are still spending your money - even if it's not right away! The sparking wine bar is so lovely. Skip the sangria (the rose one had some strange floral notes that tasted a bit medicinal) and go instead for the straight pours (yes for sparkling red!) and the sparkling wine cocktails that come in hefty goblets (the first one on the menu had a fruit puree which made the flavor and texture unreal). The bartenders were friendly and informative, and it's a great place to hang out and people watch. The process for getting a table in the general seating area is pretty unclear. I don't think most of the staff even understand it. After waiting 50 minutes, we went downstairs and had to ask at least 3 people until we found the girl with "the list" to get our status. It's also unclear which restaurants you can buy from and at which you have to sit at their own tables to eat (it seems like the sushi one does it's own thing). Regardless, after we got our table, we set off to explore our options! Most of the people in my party landed at the meat restaurant. We tried the 2 types of ribs as well as a steak, and all of the cuts were tender, flavorful, and simply divine. The sauces on the side and fries really rounded out the meal. Another friend went the more traditional Portuguese route with shrimp, croquettes, and clams. She enjoyed these as well. But seriously, guys. Get the meat. The prices are very reasonable as well! After your fairytale meal in the palace, you are immediately returned to reality when you leave, as they take your magical plastic card and charge your very real credit card for the total. You then turn into a pumpkin and are let loose into the streets of Lisboa, only to dream of the palace where sparkling wine flows and tender meat awaits. read more

Seating on the 2nd floor is beautiful. Prices on the menu are affordable $17-40. Most expensive steak is $70 . Everything we ordered was tasty . I recommend octopus and lobster linguine . Stumbled upon this place while strolling around with my boyfriend. Luckily we were able to get a seat with no reservation, but it was probably the least desirable table which made my overall experience not perfect. My advice is if you want to go here for dinner, I highly recommend you make a reservation! I loved the concept of this dining experience - the first floor offered an array of restaurants in one and the second floor was for sushi only (this is based off of what I was told, sorry for not remembering all the details!). I also loved the interior - so beautiful. Seriously felt like we were eating in a grand palace haha. In terms of food, we ordered the seafood experience and the Portuguese steak with a sunny side egg and fries with a side of baked potatoes. The seafood experience was AMAZING!! The oysters were super fresh, the octopus was yummy, the seared tuna was perfect, and the shrimps were so delicious. As for the steak - it was a bit too salty for me. The fries were okay and the side of baked potatoes were awesome. Overall, I highly recommend trying this spot out! Perfect experience. The building is amazing you get the feeling of entering an old castle ,with a staircase, paintings, sculptures and more. The dining room is big so that you feel comfortable when getting to the table , in some restaurants they are trying to put as many tables as possible and it is too busy loaded, not in Palacio Chiado. When first impressions can be misleading... we walked in the building on Jan. 1 for dinner, after our favorite choices were fully booked and we couldn't get last minute tables anywhere. We were lucky to find a table at Palácio Chiado, but were not impressed by the ground floor overall layout. Surprise #1: turns out, the ground floor is more of an informal bar/coffee area. Our hostess led us on the 1st floor, in a collection of small rooms, all with different decor and style. We were seated in a high-ish table in one of the rooms surrounded by frescoes and restored drawings from the previous century. The menu was surprise #2: we could select food from 5different themed small restaurants, all hosted in the building. 'Portuguese small plates', seafood (mostly Japanese style), meat selection, healthy/vegetarian and a page full of various ways to cook Cod fish. Really hard to choose. We started with baba ghanush, which was essentially roasted eggplant with lemon and garlic (no tahini). I really liked it, as its spices were complementing nicely the eggplant. For main dish, I selected an octopus quinoa salad (came with arugula and sweet potatoes) and my friend got the chicken with couscous and dried fruit dish. Both well prepared and delicious. Service can be slow, but the place is clean and quiet. I wish I had the chance to try more dishes from the extensive menus. Overall, a lovely experience; this place is a real hidden treasure in Lisbon! read more

I stumbled in during lunch time and was pleasantly surprised by a lunch special option - a meal, drink, and espresso. This place is such an interesting concept, it was great to be able to check it out while we were in town. It was also great for our large group as it provided a lot of options and the ability to have separate checks. For my meal, I decided to go with one of the noodle dishes from the restaurant in the bottom floor and then finished off with some of the gelato from the dessert room. The noodle dish I had was pretty good--nothing mind-blowing, but very decent and a good portion size. I also had the opportunity to try my friend's poke bowl, which also had good flavor and was a nice size for the price. The gelato I had was very tasty--especially the melon flavor, which I normally wouldn't order, but the woman working that counter let me try several flavors before making a selection. Overall, this place is a great concept for a large group and it went pretty seamlessly for us. Food isn't the best in town, but it's pretty good and the wait staff was attentive enough to make it all work. read more

Not a fan. My husband and I dined here just last night. Here is the full breakdown: Wait: over an hour. This is pretty much as we expected and not the reason for the one star. We had a drink at the bar and enjoyed the beautiful environment. Food: Octopus salad was fine. Actually, the green peppers totally overpowered the octopus. Not really great, not terrible. The melted cheese and bread dish was divine. The tuna tartare was really nice. The spicy poke was really very good, but not spicy. If you are going to call a dish spicy, make it spicy. The steak was good, not amazing. Ordered medium-rare, it was slightly over-cooked. But still a pretty good dish. Drinks: I had a couple of glasses of wine-just fine. My husband took a risk and took the servers advice and ordered a whiskey cocktail with honey and peanut butter. It took a long time to arrive and when it did, he questioned the orange peel twist. The menu had no mention of orange and he said he only tasted orange. He talked to the waiter about it, who then talked to the bartender. They insisted it was correct. My husband did not think the drink was right and it was terrible. I have never in my entire life have a restaurant or bar argue with me over a drink. If it is not right, they have always offered to remake the drink or bring something else. It's a drink. Why make a big deal about it? So is this really worth a "one star review"? In my opinion, yes. What if this was over a $34 steak, or a fine bottle of wine? The arrogance and complete lack of customer service is inexcusable. They may be the cool kids on the block now, but with this attitude towards their customers, I expect their success to be short-lived. read more

08.27.17: located just a little below the Chiado square is this beautiful restaurant; Palácio Chiado, that has a great dining experience concept. Pre-dining warning/tip: In the event your host/hostess does not communicate this beforehand, each diner will be given a specific dining card - treat this card like your baby and KEEP IT IN A SAFE PLACE. In the event that the card is lost/misplaced, a mandatory penalty of 150euros is automatically owed to the restaurant - no exceptions. When our server asked to see our card, one of my gf actually had misplaced hers and we immediately freaked out before even giving our first order LOLLL. Thankfully, she traced her tracks and found it in the restroom *phew* Diners may make a reservation ahead of time or wait ~20mins to be seated. Upon entering, you'll enter a beautiful high ceiling filled w/ beautiful staff, a little confectionary (dessert) store to your left and long bar to your right. Guests have the option of either being sat downstairs or upstairs; I sat upstairs but would suggest sitting downstairs as the menu downstairs is more wide. The way the restaurant works is that each room is catered to different dining experiences as the menus for each room differs. Downstairs you have a wider range of menu ranging from oysters to healthy bowls and even poke bowls. Upstairs are 3 separate rooms. The first room is "a la carte" or tapas only. Guest may order off the menu from downstairs to enjoy; however, you'll have to make the order downstairs if sat upstairs. You'll have a little buzzer to bring back to your table and when your food is ready, your sever will run downstairs to grab your meal for you. The second room is what I would describe a charcuterie room loll. Many sections of cured meats, cheese, etc. additionally, there are a few 2-top seating on the balcony - would suggest seating during a sunny afternoon or early evening. The third room is for sushi dining ONLY. So if one guest in your party wants sushi, they'd have to dine alone in that room specially. The upstairs also has a beautiful bar with many specialty cocktails and wine to choose from. From the a la carte menu, we tried the octopus salad and sautéed shrimp; HIGHLY recommend the sautéed shrimp. It's loaded with garlic, thinly sliced red peppers and EVO - all of the good stuff! And you know you'll have to order bread to dip and scrape up pieces of garlic . The octopus salad was different but still enjoyable; I personally prefer a good braised octopus over anything so, I'd leave it to you to choose. We also order 2 bowls from the downstairs menu; chicken, quinoa and spinach bowl and the spicy tuna poke bowl. Both very good and large portions. Would dine here again to try the other menu options in the various rooms and without the pre-dinner scare! read more

Very cool spot - they've converted a beautiful venue that was once home to a baron to a multipurpose space with food from different kitchens - brings the beauty of having choices like in a food hall to the convenience of being in a restaurant. My boyfriend enjoyed a sausage platter from one kitchen while I had a poke bowl from another, and given that my boyfriend can be a picky eater, it was so nice to have choices. After we had lunch we also explored a little bit upstairs and the venue is just beautiful - almost felt like being in a museum. We hadn't planned on coming here but we stumbled upon it after a day of walking around the city and we are very happy we did. I was excited to visit this food court after reading a travel article about it. When my husband and I got there, the staff at the door explained the concept - they give you a card and you put all food orders on the card and pay at the end. You order from the food stalls, but get drinks from wait staff at your table. My husband and I went in and checked out the options on the first floor. We each ordered a dish and sat at our table; we waited several minutes before needing to flag down someone to take our drink order. For our first order, we got some raw oysters and cod fritters. The food was all okay but nothing special, especially given the price compared to other places we dined in Portugal. After our first course, I decided the check out upstairs for the other food options. I tried to order from the sushi restaurant, only to learn that you had to sit in the sushi bar in order to get food from there. This had not been explained at the door, nor were there signs to indicate as much. However, we agreed to move tables to have some sushi upstairs. We went upstars and sat at the sushi bar, which we often do because we enjoy watching the sushi chefs. We were twice asked if we wanted to sit at a table instead, but we stayed there. We ordered another round of drinks and some food; the drinks were more expensive in the sushi restaurant than downstairs. We got an order of nigiri and sashimi - again, it was all fine and good quality but nothing special. We asked for the check and got up to go downstairs to pay. A waiter ran after us and said we had to pay for the sushi in the restaurant, not with the rest of the food. To me, this completely misses the whole point of the food court, which is that all your food is put on the card and you pay once at the end. Now we had to pay two bills. Again, this had not been explained to us, nor were there any signs to indicate this was the case. When you read the menu posted outside, the sushi menu is listed along with all the other menus, so it seems as though it is all part of the food court. Nonetheless, we paid upstairs for our sushi, then went downstairs to pay for the rest. For the food we got (4 small dishes and 4 drinks), we paid 50 EUR, which to me was highly overpriced for the quality and amount of food. Nothing was great, everything was just okay. It was by far the most expensive meal of our 2 week trip to Europe. In addition, it was one of the most confusing and frustrating dining experiences my husband and I have ever had. I think this place could be better if they could fix some of the confusion and tighten up the concept; if the whole idea is that you can dine at multiple restaurants in one building and pay one bill at the end, that needs to be the case no matter if you dine upstairs or downstairs. On the plus side, I will say the interior is absolutely beautiful, especially upstairs. If nothing else, go get a drink and enjoy the beautiful interior. read more

This chic palace was built in the 1700s for the Portuguese aristocrats. The decor on both floors was extravagant and timeless while the service was top notch. The food was above par while the bill was within reason. We were satisfied with the ribeye, foie gras, cod, risotto, octopus, and charcuterie board. If you want to dine upstairs, which offers the same menu but has a more formal setting, I would highly recommend that you make a reservation. read more
