My opinion is divided on this property depending on what you are looking for. If you want new,…read moreluxurious rooms and facilities this is probably not for you. If, on the other hand, the staff and location are primary then this is a winner. We stayed at the Pine Acres Lodge for a week. Most of the week it was only two people and then the last couple days another couple joined us. The staff was fantastic. They were friendly and helpful. We arrived very early on our day of arrival and they were able to accommodate us immediately. They were cheerful and helpful as they did so. Each time we had interactions with them it was very pleasant. The location is great. It is probably 2 1/2 blocks from some super ocean views. A short walk or minuscule drive rewarded you with incredible sunsets and Asilomar State Beach. You are a block of two from one of the best golf values on the peninsula at Pacific Grove Golf Links . The Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary is an easy walk or about a one minute drive. It is well under 3-4 minutes to downtown Pacific Grove for restaurants, coffee, gas, shopping, etc. It is probably 10 minutes to the Monterey Aquarium and Cannery Row. The units are not new, large, nor are they luxurious. We were in a 1BR cottage with a Murphy bed. The kitchen was well stocked but, again, not new and not large. We were gone much of the time but always cooked breakfast and a few dinners without any issues. Four people fit in this unit without issues. Since the outside was so nice we found the accommodations very acceptable. We liked the Pine Acres Lodge and hope to return again.

I made reservations to…read morestay at the Seven Gables, it's been years that I've passed by thinking "that looks like a cool place to stay". So with Valentines in mind...check in at 4 but they sent a text saying our room was ready at 11 or so and asked what time might we expect you? My timing was four and that's about when we arrived. It's a bit complicated but the signage was clear and there were a couple of parking spaces right by the check in office. Wow what a place Old Victorian and absolutely beautiful inside. Check in was easy and fun, we could keep our car where it was parked. There were small socializing events, a champagne pour at 5, cookies at 7...Our room was just off the parking area with no stairs to climb. We were also close to the breakfast spot. (starts at 8-10) Our room was well a large bedroom, tall queen size bed, a very large bathroom, with a Great shower (water pressure) and rainfall shower head. Three large windows gave us a good view of the bay, the window shades were thick enough to block out most of the light. The mattress was super comfortable, we slept well. We took an Uber to the old pier and had dinner, it was very quiet in town, perfect. Free breakfast always has me wondering but today this was a very nice breakfast, egg soufflé, hash browns, lots of real fresh fruit, croissants, various breads, oatmeal, various topping and cereal. Hit flavorful coffee, juices, yogurts...good stuff. The stay was pricy for the off season but sometimes ya gotta spend a few bucks too enjoy the finer things in life. Today we're headed up highway One to Capitola and over to San Jose to Santana Row for dinner with the kids, stay tuned. Foodguy-Martin

I find that service is usually at its best during those times and this was no exception. The staff was great and so was the property, including its proximity to the water, shopping and dining. I love staying at older hotels and inns because the properties are usually small and quaint, with so much charm and character. I like the limited number of rooms because each is different and unique, providing the opportunity for a one of a kind experience each time you visit.

We especially want to call out Diane, Lex, C.J., and Matt. They are joyous, welcoming, and are expert at making us feel like we belong there. A very personal experience because of them, so thank you! This review would not be complete without mentioning their coffee! They keep it hot in the lobby with plenty of cups, covers, utensils all day, every day. If you're coffee lovers as we are, it is a fabulous bonus. Their grab-and-go breakfast bags are adorable and enough to get you going with their coffee. Lots of "YUMS" as we first open our eyes each morning. Next, the housekeeping and maintenance people are all especially friendly. One of their housekeeping executives, Lourdes, told me how much she loves the region--and lives nearby. Finally the room we had was beautiful with a gas fireplace that can be turned on by the flip of a switch. You can get whatever you need from the front desk, towels, bottles of water, supplies, you name it. There is no daily housekeeping unless you request it, which honestly is a good thing--as it allows you to relax each morning with quiet and solitude. To summarize, we HIGHLY recommend this property. It is fabulous for a getaway to one of the most beautiful parts of the California coast.

Could be better: - no housekeeping services unless you're there for 4 nights and give 24 hours notice. We didn't give 24 hour notice and were given clean sheets and we had to change the bed ourselves. - CJ gives very detailed and verbose instructions that result in unnecessarily long check in lines - grab and go brown paper bag breakfast is a granola bar, slightly fresh fruit and a juice box - upgraded breakfast is the same every day although there is some alternating between bacon and sausage - In-room toilets are quite short. Like a squatty potty. But better than a pit toilet!

I specifically chose Sunset Inn over the Bide-a-Wee Inn next door because Sunset Inn advertised that their "cottages" (which are not cottages at all - they are just motel rooms) each come with a patio or balcony. I spent $100 more specifically to have this feature, only to arrive and find out that their version of a "patio" is just 2 chairs on the stoop/sidewalk next to the front door, facing the driveway/parking lot or the unit directly across from you. Zero view, zero privacy, zero tranquility, in a tiny area of about 10 square feet. That it NOT a patio, and I feel scammed. The room itself was clean, but not comfortable. The bed has a cheap, springy mattress; cheap, uncomfortable pillows; and no air conditioning or way to control the temperature in the room (there is a thermostat on the wall, but completely disabled. There is a fake fireplace, but no discernable way to cool down the room, which was quite muggy and stuffy.) The walls are thin and you can hear noise from the parking lot comin through the windows, and the coffee creamer is so old that it had caked together into a wafer instead of power. The breakfast area in the morning was cramped and disappointing. There is no suitable spread to put on the stale bread or muffins on offer (no cream cheese... not even butter! Just nasty margarine, which tells you how cheap Sunset Inn is, and how much they cut corners. At the Bide-a-Wee next door, they had butter, cream cheese, and even had hardboiled eggs for protein - and it costs half the price of this place!) And then there's the poor customer service. This expensive 2-star motel won't let you cancel (even with more than 24 hours notice) after booking a cancellable room. My wife fell ill and could no longer come down with me, so now I am stuck with a 3 hour drive and a $290 bill (extremely high for a one night stay!) all just to stay by myself at this motel since I don't want the money to go to waste. We called about 30 hours before our reservation (early morning on February 14 for a stay the night of the 15th), and they would not allow us to cancel. Instead, he offered credit for a stay, but only on a weeknight during off-season (November, December, or January)... my wife and I can't take time off to do a weeknight stay, and it's preposterous that this is the only credit that would be offered when I spent nearly $300 PER NIGHT at this sub-par establishment. Pacific Grove is a place we have frequented many times over the years, and we were hoping to find a new establishment to make our "home" whenever we visit, but it definitely won't be Sunset Inn. It's one of the 2 worst lodging experiences I've ever encountered in 20 years of coming to the area.

We enjoyed their rooftop spa overlooking the bay- next level. The entrance to the hotel opens up to a beautiful first floor with ocean view, large fireplace, sofas and seating areas, and a small bar. The hotel offers a nightly happy hour and musical performances. During our visit we had the pleasure to discover a highly talented artist by the name of Adrea, who has the most incredible voice and presence. We were so impressed by her and were very fortunate that she performed both nights of our visit. It was a performance we would have gladly paid to see, she is a rising talent for sure. I can't state how exceptional our experience was to enjoy the music in such an elevated atmosphere, relaxing by the fire, enjoying the outstanding craft cocktails by their highly talented mixologist. Schooners is not to be missed, the food is as outstanding as the ocean view! A special mention to the superior customer care provided by Pracha, a guest service manager at the hotel, who is an absolute star.
