We had a great stay! From our arrival, Rishi welcomed us and made sure our expectations were made. We were offered an upgrade from our originally booked room for a very small extra cost, we went for it. Our room was clean and everything functioned well. Upon knowing we were visiting for a birthday weekend, management had an awesome treat plate and a bottle of wine compliments of the house. Two things you must know... our room didn't not had an air conditioner which wasn't a problem for us due to the mild climate of the area. There was a box fan in the closest for our use. Also the parking can be tricky for large vehicles. This wasn't a problem for us but we saw a few people needing spotters to exit their parking spaces. Would we be back, absolutely! read more

Very disappointing and overpriced, and I am tempted to report to the FTC and/or BBB for false advertising. I specifically chose Sunset Inn over the Bide-a-Wee Inn next door because Sunset Inn advertised that their "cottages" (which are not cottages at all - they are just motel rooms) each come with a patio or balcony. I spent $100 more specifically to have this feature, only to arrive and find out that their version of a "patio" is just 2 chairs on the stoop/sidewalk next to the front door, facing the driveway/parking lot or the unit directly across from you. Zero view, zero privacy, zero tranquility, in a tiny area of about 10 square feet. That it NOT a patio, and I feel scammed. The room itself was clean, but not comfortable. The bed has a cheap, springy mattress; cheap, uncomfortable pillows; and no air conditioning or way to control the temperature in the room (there is a thermostat on the wall, but completely disabled. There is a fake fireplace, but no discernable way to cool down the room, which was quite muggy and stuffy.) The walls are thin and you can hear noise from the parking lot comin through the windows, and the coffee creamer is so old that it had caked together into a wafer instead of power. The breakfast area in the morning was cramped and disappointing. There is no suitable spread to put on the stale bread or muffins on offer (no cream cheese... not even butter! Just nasty margarine, which tells you how cheap Sunset Inn is, and how much they cut corners. At the Bide-a-Wee next door, they had butter, cream cheese, and even had hardboiled eggs for protein - and it costs half the price of this place!) And then there's the poor customer service. This expensive 2-star motel won't let you cancel (even with more than 24 hours notice) after booking a cancellable room. My wife fell ill and could no longer come down with me, so now I am stuck with a 3 hour drive and a $290 bill (extremely high for a one night stay!) all just to stay by myself at this motel since I don't want the money to go to waste. We called about 30 hours before our reservation (early morning on February 14 for a stay the night of the 15th), and they would not allow us to cancel. Instead, he offered credit for a stay, but only on a weeknight during off-season (November, December, or January)... my wife and I can't take time off to do a weeknight stay, and it's preposterous that this is the only credit that would be offered when I spent nearly $300 PER NIGHT at this sub-par establishment. Pacific Grove is a place we have frequented many times over the years, and we were hoping to find a new establishment to make our "home" whenever we visit, but it definitely won't be Sunset Inn. It's one of the 2 worst lodging experiences I've ever encountered in 20 years of coming to the area. read more

I have been meaning to write a view of Sunset Inn since our stay in July and am finally getting to it. This place is an excellent value. The location is excellent - the ocean is a 5 minute walk away and the Lighthouse commercial district is only a 20 minute walk. The premises have been upgraded and are well maintained. This is a quaint spot about a block away from the beach. We stay in Pacific Grove often, and have stayed in many places - this was our first time here. We were a bit early for check in, but the gentleman at the front desk was so kind and hospitable. He offered us coffee and drinks in the lobby while we checked in. I asked if the tea was also available and he said "of course, while you're here, this place is your home - anything you need or want is yours". We got to our room and it was very spacious and looked to have been recently updated. The bathroom was small, but it was nicely done and well appointed with all the essentials. The shower features a rainfall and handheld shower head. Both were excellent and the water pressure was great. The bed was a little bit firm for me, but I really had no issues sleeping on it. I was worried about noise as we were in room 108 and had neighbors next door. The doors are a little awkwardly placed into the rooms so if both rooms opened the door at the same time, we would literally run into each other. However, there were no issues with noise. Maybe we got lucky and had quiet neighbors but we had no complaints with noise. Overall, hubby said he really enjoyed this place and would be happy to stay again. The price was also great for the area. My ONLY minor complaint is the parking can be quite tight. I'd return. read more

It was overpriced for one night fake fireplace. There's no way to turn on that fireplace but the one thing that was very disappointing was in the shower. The faucet is on the ceiling so if you wanna wash your hair, that's great, but if you don't want your hair wet that's not so good. It was clean but very overpriced. Very small. I love so early. I stayed at Sunset Inn in June 2025 and had mixed feelings about the experience. I booked two rooms through Expedia: one Standard Queen Room and one Deluxe King Room with Jetted Tub. At check-in, I asked if the two rooms could be closer together, and the manager gave me adjacent rooms--Rooms 106 and 107. However, I later discovered that one of the rooms had been downgraded to a Classic King Room with no jetted tub--without informing me. I was never told that switching to rooms next to each other would involve changing one of the room types I had paid for. If I had been given that information, I would have made a different choice. I reached out to the hotel afterward to clarify, but the manager insisted the downgrade was based on my request and took no responsibility for the lack of communication. I didn't raise the issue during the stay simply because I didn't realize it until I returned home and reviewed my booking. Their response was dismissive, and although they offered a free night under restricted conditions, I declined. Even though I booked through Expedia, the hotel still made a room change without informing me. I appreciate Expedia's support, but I don't feel confident returning unless the hotel improves its communication and accountability. The inn itself is charming, the location is nice, and the rooms are clean. But guests should be aware that requests made at check-in might lead to room changes without clear notice, and that post-stay concerns may not be taken seriously by hotel management. If you're considering staying here, please read other Yelp reviews with 1-3 stars. There's a clear pattern in how management handles guest feedback and room issues. Some may wish room was larger, but we found it adequate. It has an electric fireplace. Bed was excellent. Manager genuinely cared that we were comfortable. Inn is not right on the bay and you can't see water until you drive a short distance and take scenic drive along shore. My grandmother and I drove up for her brother's celebration of life this weekend. My grandmother's family lives in Pacific Grove for over 30 years so they booked us this hotel room. I'm pretty picky when it comes to hotels and I usually don't enjoy staying in them however, I'll be honest I really enjoyed this place. My grandmother is also 84 years old and so she needs to have a place with no stairs and this was really convenient for her to be able to walk up one small step. I thought they were so cute, they had little patio seating in front of each room. The room inside was really nice includes an electric fire place, a fridge and a Keurig. Usually hotel rooms have horrible shower supplies however, I thoroughly enjoyed the shampoo conditioner and the body wash they provided. The lobby is little and small but it's cute. There's a few breakfast items, some juice and some tea. He also has some maps and brochures of the surrounding areas of restaurants and places to check out if you're not from the area. I woke up early in the morning to take a walk to find the ocean. You can hear it from the hotel. Leaving the hotel if you make a right and walk down just a few feet the first turn on the left takes you straight down to the ocean, which only took about five minutes to walk. There's wildlife everywhere and the deer's are out in the open which I really enjoyed. The owner was gracious and kind, probably the best customer service I've ever received, he even left my grandmother and I a bottle of wine in our hotel. I honestly would stay here every time. This family run inn is nice indeed. We opted for a larger king room and we were glad we did. Much roomier than other regular king rooms we saw. The room was clean and had extra furniture. The fridge and micro work well. Breakfast was very simple but adequate. Only a block away from Asilomar state beach hiking trails. Lots of deer in the area which was a treat to see. We spent one night here. Great customer service. Our room was clean, quiet and conveniently located within walking distance to the water. The very large, well decorated room was clean but dated. Some of the molding in the rooms seem to have a lot of water damage. The room furniture is nice but also has some damage. The lack of countertop in the bathroom was a bit annoying but nothing that mattered for one night. Our room had a huge jetted tub. The faucets on the tub were a bit old and difficult to turn, which made controlling the temperature difficult at times. There is a gas fireplace in the room, which was nice to have, especially in the chilly morning. The breakfast is lacking but nice to have. There is a fancy coffee machine that has several different coffee options. Breakfast is served in the lobby, which is very small and cramped. You will need to take your breakfast outside or back to your room, since there isn't a place to sit in the lobby itself. read more

Very cute place, however, our Queen room was TINY. I want to say it was the smallest room that I have ever stayed in. Just barely enough room for the bed. I would highly recommend going with a king room or two Queens. The bathroom was nicely sized and the towels were very thick. The room had a tv, fireplace, microwave, coffeemaker and mini fridge. They even gifted us a bottle of wine which I thought was a nice touch. We did not partake in the morning breakfast or the evening snacks but it seemed like it would have been great. We enjoyed our stay. The room was very clean and nice. We had the a king size deluxe room with a fireplace and jacuzzi tub. The shower head leaked a lot when you were filling the tub. There was a wash cloth wrapped around the shower head from the previous guest. Housecleaning didn't look up and see it. The shower head was pretty high up. The tub is big enough for two. I told them about the leak hopefully they'll fix it. The bed was very comfortable. Two of the windows didn't close. It was very quite and peaceful. When you were outside you could hear the ocean. The ones who run the hotel are very kind and hospitable. Rishi the general manager was awesome. He really made you feel like family. They were very kind and nice. They made us feel special. They had a juice machine and coffee machine that makes lattes and mocha coffee . Morning time they had wrapped sweet rolls and packaged oatmeal, granola bars along with yogurt. They had apples, oranges and bananas. Rishi was great about recommending restaurants in the area. They really treated you like you were a guest in there home. The air was filled with overly florid air fresherners, and the clerk seemed to be on 3 separate phone calls that had nothing to do with the small property. What a quaint place to stay! Upon arrival you can see this little place is loved and cared for by the owners. We stood in room #100 which is closest to the front. The room is on the smallish side but it didn't interfere with our stay. It was clean, cozy, comfortable, and it felt safe there. I did notice the body wash was low so I asked for room service to fill it up. I didn't realize the shampoo was also low but found out while showering the next morning. Luckily, I brought my own. Two surprises: (1) the owner is really nice, and polite, but has his cultural ways so when he asked (us? At least I thought he was asking US) how we were liking the room, I started to chime in but he raised his finger at me and said, "I want to hear what HE has to say," referring to my SO to which he and I looked at each other as our jaws dropped. Being a native New Yorker, I am used to cultural differences so I let the slight slide and walked away. The second surprise came at about 6am Monday 8/31/20. We were awakened by what seemed like the rumbling of a steam locomotive passing through. I was too groggy to investigate until the entire room shook. I jumped out of bed to look out the window to find construction going on. I have to give this place at least 4 stars because the construction isn't permanent and isn't Sunset's fault. We spent my 48th birthday at this fine establishment. The room was very clean. Very very clean. The bed was comfortable, and the shower products were nice. The fireplace was pleasant and I really was happy about a ceiling fan. It feel like home. We were offered a bottle of wine for my birthday, but in boring and don't drink. Well we were presented some sparkling cider, and a plate with fruit, crackers, and laughing cow cheese. It was a very simple gesture that was very well received. We stayed two nights in a newly remodeled room. It was immaculately clean and comfortable although a small dresser in the room would be useful for setting personal items down. The manager was so friendly and accommodating and we felt very welcomed. Breakfast is English muffins, toast, yogurt, cereal etc and you take it either to the patio or back to your room to eat. Aged but basically kept up. My shower was finicky to get the temperature right. They need a skilled carpenter to replace some of the window sills due to moisture. We stayed here for three nights in March for my husband's birthday and loved it. We'd never stayed in pacific grove before when visiting Monterey , but it's actually better in a lot of ways and prices are a little better. It's practically the same place, it's just a couple of miles south so you don't have all the cannery row crowds. It easy to park , nicer beaches and beach access , and closer to 17 mile drive etc. anyway, on the the review. Check in was fine. The gal was nice enough and gave us a glass of wine ( they offer wine every night )and also gave my husband a small comp champagne bottle for his birthday ! Nice!! They also have candy jars in the lobby/ office. :) We booked a king room w fireplace and spa tub and had called in advance to request a private rm and to let them know we're celebrating a bday. They gave us a fantastic room in a two rm structure ( rm 117). It was big and clean w lots of drawers and storage. We had rm for our bikes and they weren't in the way at all. Fridge and microwave. They also had a small bouquet of flowers and a card for my husband's birthday which was a nice touch. I was worried bc some of the reviews said the rooms were run down but our wasn't at all. We loved it! The spa tub was great! The only issue w the bathroom was very limited vanity space. I hate that, but we made it work. Also toilet was a little wonky to flush but we figured it out and it worked fine. The bed was iffy. My husband thought it was fine but I couldn't get comfortable and was sore each morning. It was ok. Not a comfy bed you don't want to get out of or look forward to getting it, but fine. Also , small nightstands which bugs me but not a big deal. Oh, and a few ants so keep your food in the fridge. Breakfast was fine. Yogurt , cold and hot cereal, bagels and bread, juice. We had to ask for them to replenish the pastries and yogurts 2 of the mornings , and they did they were out of pastries one day bc we were a little late ( 9:30). Nothing outstanding but fine and did the job. The only real complaint I could have is one gal in the front office where breakfast was served wasn't very helpful. Like she didn't want to be there at all.: The first morning, we went to breakfast and the tables were dirty. I asked mentioned it and she said there was a towel in a drawer under the tv, and didn't get up from her chair. So I got the towel and wiped down the tables. Then we asked her if there were more pastries. She got out a tray but held it to us to take one, then she put it away instead of leaving it out for others. Kinda weird. THEN , I asked her for a second luggage rack in the room. She acted like I was nuts and I explained we had two suitcases. She kinda shrugged and said " I guess I could take one from another room.... maybe ask housekeeping. " I asked if I should just ask the ladies who were out cleaning and she said yes. I did and they brought one no problem. She wasn't much help at all but all the other folks who worked there were great ! They offered lots of wine !! I will def stay here again. Me and my wife chose this place last minute to celebrate our Anniversary. And I was looking on AirBnB and this place popped up and the availability showed they only had 1 room left, must have been a last minute cancellation. We booked the room on Airbnb, room was confirmed, we went the next day to Monterey, we visited the aquarium first which was awesome, you gotta visit this beautiful aquarium. Then we went to our hotel after the aquarium closed. Showed up about 5:30. Was greeted by Rishi (the manager) at the front desk. He was very very nice, told us about some nice spots to visit and some restaurants to eat at. We had our plans set on eating at Monterey's fish house, which is our little spot we eat at every time we come to Monterey. I had told Rishi ahead of time that we were celebrating our anniversary, and he remembered when we showed up, and even left us a little surprise in the room, he left us a bouquet of flowers in the room. Very cool!! The room is very nice!! Especially for $90 for the night. Here is everything we loved here 1.king size bed, comfy 2.fireplace 3.Keurig coffee maker 4.hardwood floors-clean :) 5.Rishi (manager) and their staff are super friendly 6.nice updated bathroom 7.big shower!! 8.Parking is right next to your room, you don't need to walk far away. This place is a GEM! Quaint, charming and the absolutely CLEANEST place I've ever stayed, including 4-star properties like Hyatts and Marriotts. Rashi welcomed us like old friends, even though this was our first time here. We had one of the only rooms with upstairs guests - most of the rooms were more like attached cottages. Each "room" had its own little front porch (or balcony) with 2 chairs and a small table. Our room had a fabulous jacuzzi spa tub and a lovely gas fireplace which warmed our room very nicely. The bed was super comfy - not too soft - the linens and duvet were sparkling clean, as was everything in our room. My husband particularly appreciated the Keurig coffee maker. The fridge was actually cold and the back of the remote didn't fall off - a little pet peeve of mine that I have experienced in so many of my travels! Outside of the office/lobby were tables, chairs and a cozy fire pit. The continental breakfast was good - hot and cold cereal, fresh fruit, English muffins, raisin bread, yogurt, fresh donuts and crullers, orange, cranberry and apple juice, fresh, hot coffee and tea. And again, spotlessly clean! This was our first time visiting Monterey and only stayed overnight. We visited the Aquarium and went whale watching. We didn't really have time to take advantage of the beach but will definitely be back - and we cannot wait to stay at the Sunset Inn again. I stayed here for my anniversary weekend I couldn't have been happier! They accommodated us in every possible way! We had a room with a deck and if you looked beyond the trees you could see the water which I wasn't expecting to be able to see we had a beautiful jacuzzi tub and a cozy fireplace. Our directions were easy and everything was absolutely perfect the only Hiccup we had was the vending machine didn't have water or Gatorade (or whatever beverage like that was offered for $2) so I ended up with $4 in change because everything else was a dollar. Kinda funny but also annoying. They have a beautiful fire place with flowers and some Buddha statues in front of the office that's beautiful to sit around. The beach is also a very short walk away so no need to worry about parking on the beach. They have good recommendations but I don't like the adventures by the sea, their customer service is kinda rude so I do recommend supporting the Big Sur adventures instead. Wow! The biggest headache of my life was to book a room with a prepaid voucher from travelzoo. Don't make the mistake I did. The manager is very unprofessional and made me wait several days for a call back and then said the rates on a date are higher than what I paid. I pod for a weekend rate (Friday- Saturday) and he's always pushing me to come on a weekday. We have jobs and why would I come on a weekday if I paid for a weekend!!! He's trying to profit on both ends. I paid a premium for weekend and he's denying me that so he can give my room to another sucker for higher rate. Highly deceptive practices. That date is not a blackout date per voucher. What he's doing is unfair and illegal. I will also be complaining to travelzoo. Dealing with the manager has been a nightmare. He never gives a straight answer, it's always a story of a runaround of useless things. I paid out of pocket for a nice getaway but he made the entire experience so unpleasant that I don't even care to go anymore. What a waste of my time and money!!! read more

Best place ever. Service is impeccable, rooms are clean and very comfy. Close to so many amazing sites and food. Canary Row, lighthouse, golf, hikes, Lovers Point, Pebble Beach, Carmel, 17 mile drive and so many more. Great food of all kinds within 5-10 minute drive. The best part is the affordability. This is a very cute inn by the beach. It is walking distance to the beach to watch sunset. When we arrived, it was late and there was no parking available. Front desk Rishi was very friendly and ensure that we can park by the handicap area. Check-in was an easy process. Not only that, he took some time to inform us about the area and where to eat. Also, this place offers bikes rental which I thought was convenient. We rented 2 bikes and rode down to the beach and around town. The only thing I didn't really enjoyed was the walls are too thin. We literally can hear our neighbor talking. Overall it was a pleasant stay. Would definitely recommend it! read more
