A friend recommended this motel due to more affordable rates while having ocean view rooms. The most disgusting motel room I've ever experienced! Smelly room with old smelling furniture, stained carpet and walls, nasty bathroom, tiny shower, dingy tiny closet, old spring mattress, disgusting bed cover, a tiny TV that sits on the dresser that you can't see if you're laying down. I couldn't even enjoy the ocean view out the window at night because they keep the porch lights on all night and I had to close the heavy curtains to block the light so I could sleep. I absolutely dreaded going back to the room and hated sleeping on that nasty bed. I don't understand how can such beautifully located motel have such disgusting rooms? read more

Walking distance to the Monterey Bay Aquarium (it's a longish walk) and a bunch of restaurants (including two just around the corner), and literally across the street from the beach. Ocean front rooms have chairs outside their doors so you can enjoy the ocean sights and sounds from the front porch. Note: yes, the motel is "ocean front" but you still need to cross a busy 2-lane street to get to the actual beach. That same street can get pretty loud with all the cars and foot traffic going by, so opt for a second floor room if possible. But definitely go for the ocean view because the non-ocean view isn't much to look at. Service and staff are wonderful. My MIL checked out without realizing she'd left her iPad in the bed. She called the front desk and they were holding it for her. They were going to send it to her home but hubby and I were actually booked to check in there a couple days later so Steve at the front desk (maybe he's the owner?) kept it safe until we got there to pick it up. This place has a retro feel, so don't come into it expecting lots of (or any) three-prong electrical outlets. But it was clean and had cable tv. There's no air conditioning, but we felt safe enough leaving our first floor window cracked open all night. For weather reference, we visited in July 2022. It's about 1.5 miles walk to Monterey Bay Aquarium and all of Cannery Row. A few blocks walk to downtown restaurants and shopping. We have been enjoying our stays at the Borg's since 1995! No frills or thrills, it's a MOTEL; but! The location and views make up for it. Service is excellent, inviting, warm and friendly. Coffee, teas are available to you daily in front lobby. Borg's Ocean Front Motel, is a 5 star Motel in my life, but not 5 star in the 5 star motel world. Allow me to explain. The fifth star is missing here simply because it is an old building, but the charm makes it a 5 star, personally. My wife and I make a yearly trip to "The Borg's", as we like to call it, for our wedding anniversary. We will also make random trips there throughout the year. Location location location! The Borg's sits on an ocean frontage road and the views are stunning . In geographic layout you have the ocean, rocks/beach, walking paths, 2 lane street and the Borg's...it's right there. We prefer to stay on the second floor so our view never gets obstructed. We love to sit on the balcony and drink our morning coffee, watch the sea life wake up as otters, seals and other aquatic animals play. Kayakers cruise through the kelp beds as fishing boats and whale watching vessels can be seen out in the distance. I have had opportunities to feed seagulls and black birds out of my hand as they land on the balcony rail. Lover point activities, bike rentals, restaurants, surfboard and wetsuit rentals are all within a 5 minute walk of the motel, but they are out of view from The Borg's. All the wonders of Pacific Grove and Monterey are a short bike or car ride away. We love "The Borg's". I will follow up with some pictures at a later date. Our visit was fantastic celebrating our 40th Anniversary. Clean but not fancy. But the view is beautiful. We enjoyed sitting out in front of our room having a glass of wine and watching the waves hit against the rocks. absolutely gorgeous. I suggest the top floor you have ocean view from every direction. We love to walk, so we walk everywhere. Cannery Row.and to a nice place to eat call The Awakening for breakfast. Customer service is great very friendly and helpful. What you're paying here is for the view. It's a motel, so set your expectation nozzle to realistic. You're not going to get the Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons here. With that, it's a nice little motel. There was a bit of an issue initially as we had changed our date from a Sunday to a Saturday, and were not told of any price difference until we hit the front counter a few weeks later. Overall: First off be aware that this is a motel my friends, can you say, M-O-T-E-L? So don't go expecting amenities such as thick walls, hair dryers, premium cable, continental breakfast, quiet neighbors. Yeah, I'm talking to you - guys who arrive after hours with your biking gear and stomp all over the place; or you, Mr. Mercedes pocketing the travel expense difference and holding meetings loudly by phone in the next room at 5 am, or you drunken BFFs here for the wedding party at Lover's Point just steps away - or were you the let's just get away from Salinas for the weekend party (and honestly who wouldn't want to? Oh, and not to be left out, the family leaving a very, very small child apparently alone who wakes up and cries inconsolably only to cry themselves to sleep again. However...however.... if you bear all this in mind, it is in a prime location at a lower than anywhere else price. And did I mention there is the whole location, location, location thing? They also provide a decent tasting free cup of Joe in the morning. So if all you're looking for is a place of operations and place to stash your stuff, look no further. They are very good for what they offer - as one reviewer said...no frills. Environment: The rooms are small - so small even the mice are hunchback. You will also be packed next to others even if it is midweek and there are only ten visitors staying which sucks. But the rooms are clean and well maintained. Bathrooms are small and have only showers so if you are large and like those all you can eat buffets in Seaside you may end up with your four-corner-contact cleaning the wall. But again, they are clean. Beware if you like to bring your laptop, the tellys all have HDMI but you must go to the office to get the remote to change over to the correct input since the rooms only have the cable remote and the ONE telly remote is safeguarded by the front desk. Service: Maid service was efficient and I assume that if you didn't get a cranky housekeeper you got new soaps and your hdmi input was not changed back so she could watch her shows on the telly. We didn't and I know this from the dirty looks she kept shooting us as we walked to our car. The front desk dudes were friendly and interested in you and did not give you dirty looks if you took more than one cup of coffee at a time. Price Point: $112.00 per night but with those pesky taxes, and "other" charges, the price increases to 127.69 per night. read more

No frills with an ocean view . There wasn't a coastline view from our room so not terribly interesting, but nice enough and very close to Lovers Point and great access for my mom who needs a cane. Beds were comfortable. Bathroom... well... not up to today's standards, but the water was hot and it was clean. The heater was quick but would probably set your clothes on fire if you put them too close! It is right next to the road which happened to have a construction plate over it on our stay but traffic was minimal after 10 and we were there to get that early morning walk in anyway - right on the point! We also enjoyed walking along the path just outside. We ate at the Beach House nearby at his recommendation, with a coupon for a free appetizer and had a great experience there as well. read more

For beachfront it's a decent price but seriously needs to be upgraded. Room 153 needs the carpet deep cleaned, the room wasn't dusty but i could stop sneezing in the room. Furniture was banged and bashed, front door was cracking at the bottom. Things like the TV directory and walls were dirty, yet oddly the TV remote was in a bag. The bathroom was overall clean but the toilet seat needs to be replaced. My sheets and bed were clean but still inspected everything for bedbugs and thankfully found no trace. The mattress was lumpy and the pillows were flat. The safety tag on the door from McGruff The Crime Dog from 1995. Deadbolt but no peephole or security latch on the door. Great location for the price but needs basic updates and upgrades. read more

Great location and great prices. This is a very No Frills motel that is very clean. There were some families, but it was fairly quiet. The beds were a bit on the hard side, but the rooms were extremely clean. The furniture is 1960's Americana style, but our bathroom was newly renovated to the same era. The staff were very nice and friendly. You may want to bring a mattress topper if you need a soft bed, and an ironing board and iron if you need that too. Some rooms are adjoining, so you may want to specify if that is an issue for you. I personally travel light and I don't need much, so I would definitely stay here again. In fact, they don't gouge people during busy times like most other hotels in the area. But, if a clean room at an affordable price and a place to rest your head is what you're looking for, then this is the place. Love this little mom and pop motel. When planning a trip down to Monterey, this is our go to temporary stay. Yes, its old, but it's super clean, comfy and the staff is very polite and accommodating which is what matters in the end. The location is spectacular and I can tell they take pride in their business. They do provide shampoo/conditioner and bar soap; however, don't expect frederic fekkai or dove body wash... just bring your own stuff, no biggie. Wifi works just fine, if you want to bury your face in your electronics while on vacation. If you're expecting a hyatt, then go there for $300+ a night instead and leave this gem for people who can appreciate its charm. :) I usually take a short walk to holly's lighthouse cafe for breakfast or go to the international cuisine for lunch and have a glass of house wine. First, if you know yourself well enough that you prefer a coffee maker, hair dryer in the bathroom, a mini fridge _and_ room service, do not check in at Borg's. You will be miserable. But...... if your idea of a motel is simply a place to lay your head in the wee hours of the night (or day) and take a quick shower.... and you just want a clean, simple little room, then Borg's is the only place you should stay in Pacific Grove. Other accomodations around this little gem are hundreds of dollars more per day. Not only is Borg's very affordable but also cozies itself right up to Lover's Point, one of the most beautiful views in all of the Peninsula. I rent a bicycle and roam around the coastline and at the end of each day, the attendant at Borg's locks up the bike for me in their supply room until I need to roll it out again. Awesome. I don't know how this hotel has less then four stars on Yelp. What you see is what you get and I really like this hotel a lot. We had called the Hyatt, and about five other home town hotels as we drove down the row. I really wanted to stay at a mom and pop our cute bed & breakfast to support a small local spot. Everyone was about $249+/night which was fine but we couldn't get an ocean view for less then $349.We almost settled but then we saw Borg. The man on the phone was very nice and had a room with an ocean view literally right across the street from the ocean. For $139, it was ours for the night. Sometimes we want room service and a really nice room with a big shower and big fluffy towels and we pay for that without blinking. This time we wanted the ocean. This is a modest hotel. While it is 'older' it's clean and that matters. The tile in the bathroom is probably from the 40's but it still looks pretty damn good, and clean. Plus we got the added bonus of some much needed exercise. We walked to the row for dinner. It was about a mile and just right. We did take a cab back because it got dark. We feel asleep listening to the waves crashing on the rocks/beach right across the street. It was heaven. When we first got there, the gentleman at the front desk seemed like the owner. He took pride in the hotel and shared it's history with us. Apparently the same family owns it. He said they have probably received many offers over the years from the big guys but clearly never sold out. I love that. Also they have an info card and they are transparent with their rates as they are clearly listed for winter/summer on the card which is nice. He gave us a key to check the room before renting. While we weren't 'wowed' with the decor, size or amenities, it was exactly what we wanted, all ocean :-) There are definitely times for a nice room and all the perks but for a quick weekend get away this is our new spot. They have kept it simple and we loved it. If you are hoping for an amazing hotel experience stay elsewhere. If you are looking to fall asleep to the sound of waves and to wake up with such a gorgeous view for under $200/night, this is your spot. read more

Yup, I'm a fan! $65 to stay across the street from the bay?? Almost as good of a deal as Hotel Mac Rae in Avalon off-season! Not a fancy 5 star room.. but adequate. Clean, quiet, comfortable. Small dinky bathroom. But hey, you get what you pay for. I would rather spend my $$ on food and entertainment than sleeping! As long as it's clean and comfortable, what else do I need? Frank, the person a the desk, was very friendly and helpful. I asked him about a local bbq joint and he told me about the Little Chicken House. I will write an update and post photos after I leave. Location: Set your GPS to Lover's Point, Pacific Grove, CA. Can't miss it on the south side of the street opposite of the bay. Plenty of parking, in the back and on the street. Street parking has a 2 hour limit between 9 AM-8 PM. Atmosphere/Ambiance: Well this is why I gave it the two stars. The view WOW!!! If it were an empty lot I would have given it more. Service: Check in staff was very friendly and helpful. They were very accommodating when I asked if I could leave my car in their parking lot so we could walk to cannery row for the day. They offer free wifi and morning coffee. Quality: Well this is why I didn't give it any more stars. The room was very out dated. When was the last time you've seen chipped painted tile? They should have left the light green tile alone, at least it would have felt like stepping back into the 60's. The linen was clean, but everything but the cable TV and two table lamps was old and it gives you feeling that it isn't clean. And the smell, well let me put it to you this way, they allow pets and you can tell. I paid the premium rate, was hoping that some of the reviews might be under rated. It just seems they don't want to spend any more then what they have too. So if your going to plan on staying here and sit outside over looking the bay, taking in the view, you'll need to over look the quality of the room too. Cost: Over rated. I guess if your use to staying at the one's who "...leave the lights on for you," you might consider this one a deal. But I expected more. At least the other one's updates their rooms once in awhile. It had a flat screen tv, new carpet Nd it looked like the bathroom had been recently updates. Bed was comfortable and they offered extra pillows right off. We spent the evening sitting outside our room on the porch in the new chairs visiting our friends next door. Even pulled a table out of the room - ordered pizza and enjoyed the view of dolphins then lights on the water. Lacked a hair dryer. My family always stays here when we come to Monterey bay - sure we'd love to stay at an expensive B&B, but we can't afford that. We're staying in a "family room", which is a main room, a small room with a second bed, and a bathroom. It's $200/night mid-week during the summer once all the taxes and fees are added in. We put on our wetsuits, walk across the street, and go ocean swimming, nice tide-pools there The pluses: the room is super-clean, the linens are absolutely clean, bed is comfortable, we got extra towels and pillows no problem, amazing water pressure, and the hot water is HOT, it's across the street from Lover's Point, very close to basically everything else, and the family room is downstairs facing the parking lot, whereas the ocean-facing rooms are also facing the street right in front of the hotel, so it's actually pretty quiet. The not-so-amazing: zero frills, I mean none, there's a vending machine with canned drinks and an ice machine, the WiFi is spotty and can be slow, the cable goes out from time to time, the room's advertised "sitting area" is a small table with two chairs next to a window, not a separate sitting area, the wall plugs are two-prong, so if you have anything that has a three-prong plug you'll want to bring an adapter, there's no mini-fridge in the room, so bring an ice chest if you want to keep perishables. What I want to see in the future: mini-fridges available for rent, faster and stable WiFi, three-prong adapters on the wall outlets. read more

This is a 50s style motel (not from outer space as the name might sound like to StarWars fans) - its very basic and clean, but has no frills or amenities - very basic. But the location, location, location at Lovers Point is spectacular - if you get a ocean side room on the 2nd floor, you can see the sea otters so close that its almost like your dog in the yard through your window in the morning. Following than perhaps walk along the coast to the Monterey Bay Aquarium or further west along the coast on a nature walk. Then in the evening, sip a glass of wine on the baloney outside your door and watch the sunset. I frequently see deer along the walk to the Aquarium and one time in the Borg parking lot I hand feed carrots I had to young deer with their mom. The cost is high for a 50s place, but cheap by Monterey Bay standards. I stay there with colleagues when working in the area and want sleep-cheaps (this our favorite, but when my better half is along, she would prefer the fancy Bed & Breakfasts just a few blocks to the east (closer to Cannery Row) - they offer similar great locations, but at 3x to 4x the price - but hey you get grommet breakfast and free happy hour in the early evenings. read more

We needed another retreat, and we decided to come back, never disappointed. The staff is great, Frank is the man. He helps you find what is best for you, even will show you rooms once here, so you can see different options, we tried the conjoined rooms where one is queen with ocean view, and other is king with parking lot view, joined by long hall way, which hides and stores all your bags. Each room has a bathroom, and TV. This was great, maid service is wonderful, weather a bit rainy, the room have excellent heaters, pretty good beds, and soft sheets and blankets, for the price you can't do better....ask for Frank read more

Apparently time to come here is late April or May for pink flowers that will cover the area. That would be so beautiful! Like other yelpers said, Borg's location is fantastic. This motel offers complimentary coffee, coco and tea from 8-10. It also offers wifi, and cable and radio. I think it's weird there aren't any clocks around. Maybe people kept stealing them? The walls here are paper thin. So you can hear...EVERYTHING. Also, I believe closets are connected to a different room. Kinda creeps me out. I also wish they provided breakfast. Can't have it all. I have been here a couple of times now and hope to return again. The room itself is average but it's the view that pays for itself. I always book the upstairs and the view of Monterey Bay is incredible! The ocean lulls you to sleep at night! It is right across from Lovers Point and there is a walking trail with benches right across the street. It is close to all the tourist spots but for myself it gives me the beautiful view of the ocean to sit outside and just rest awhile. read more
