I was extremely disappointed with my stay. From the moment I walked into my room, it had a strong odor of cigarette smoke that seemed to be masked with an overpowering chemical spray. The combination was overwhelming and actually caused me breathing issues, making it very uncomfortable to stay in the room. I contacted the front desk to explain the situation and asked if I could either be moved to another room or receive a refund so I could stay elsewhere. I was told the hotel was completely sold out, and despite the condition of the room, they refused to offer any refund or accommodation. Instead the manager instructed the front desk to "smell" the room herself and give me an air purifier. I understand that hotels can sell out, but guests should not be expected to stay in a room that smells like smoke and chemicals--especially when it impacts their health and comfort. The lack of customer service and unwillingness to make the situation right was incredibly frustrating. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I would not stay here again or recommend this hotel to others. read more

The front desk staff and groundskeeper were helpful and friendly, but they are the only things we appreciated during our overnight stay. The rooms and exterior of the building are in desperate need of updating. It's basically a motel out of the 70's. Attempts were made to feel clean, but only so much can be done with something so warm and in tired condition. It is conveniently located to restaurants, etc., but it also faces a gas station. This was my second time in Monterey, last time made the mistake of booking a hotel near the lighthouse and had a really bad experience. I didn't review because I saw the owner or management would get nastily involved. The Stevenson Monterey was a total different experience. Checked in this last August 2025 and the front desk clerk was really nice, polite and well mannered. It really made me feel welcome. After being in the Sierra Nevada for the past few days this definitely felt like a 5 star hotel!!! I will always consider this hotel when staying in Monterey and recommend to my friends and family. We stay here everytime we're in Monterey. It's not super fancy, but it has everything you need and it's in a great location that's walkable to a lot of great spots! There are a lot of amazing restaurants only 2-3 minutes away on foot. The rooms are okay, they are a little dated and the beds are a bit small if you plan to share. It can be a little loud sometimes with people walking around outside your room or above you, but that's the standard for most places. Not bad at all, especially for the price. read more

Had a great experience! Booked through Expedia for $122 on a Saturday night. Check in was easy and we could choose which floor we wanted to stay on. The lobby was very clean and had free coffee/tea/water. Our room was very clean and nice. You have to turn your fridge on when you get into the room. Due to them trying to save electricity. The elevator worked which was great and so did the ice machines. There is a chevron directly next to the hotel so you can go and get snacks or drinks. The only downside was no microwave in your room. BUT there was a microwave in the lobby to use. I would totally stay here again. read more

We were given an ADA room but not the one with the placard. The bed is comfortable and the bathroom is spacious.. there is a comfortable chair and a desk with chair and light. Negatives: no microwave but there is one in the office, the safe doesn't work, the room and bathroom could be better lit. 3.5 stars. I was able to book 2 nights for a last minute getaway to Monterey. I was lucky to see there was a 30% off promo going on for the Labor Day weekend. For a last minute booking, the price wasn't terrible, at $350 total for two nights. I was also able to call in advance to request a room on the top floor since I don't like hearing people stomping around at night when I'm trying to sleep lol. The location is very convienent, about 15 minutes walk to go to fisherman's wharf, and about 20-30 mins to walk to Cannery Row/the aquarium. There's lots of restauraunts and cafes within walking distances, and the motel is located directly in front of a gas station/convienence store. I was surprised to see that the room wasn't as small as I expected, since on the website it described the room as "junior". There's plenty of room for two people. I also liked how the bathroom had a hand soap dispenser! I detest hotel bar soaps to wash my hands because eventually they get nasty, so that was nice to have. The bed was surprisingly comfy too. Now for the ugly- I noticed there was a small speck of a bloodstain on the bedsheets. The bedsheets were obviously cleaned, but it was a bit off putting to see that. I didn't want to make a fuss out of it since it was a very small stain. I also noticed there was a small stain probably from a beverage on the nightstand, and it made me question if the surfaces in the motel was wiped thoroughly or not. My room was also located on the side where the busy intersection is so it was a little bit noisy. If I stay here again, I'd recommend requesting a room away from the busy street. There's 24/7 coffee and tea and a water dispenser near the front desk. Front desk was very friendly. We were able to park our car underground, which had a convienent elevator. We were able to leave our car parked even after we checked out the same day, so we walked downtown to grab breakfast before we headed back home. read more

This was my second time staying here. The first time I stayed was years ago with my family on a road trip up the coast of CA. We had two rooms: one for my husband and me and another for my teenage kids (my kids are now in their mid-twenties). The hotel served its purpose and is centrally located. This trip, I was looking for a hotel near the convention center since the preferred hotel was completely booked for my conference. I was travelling alone, so I wanted someplace familiar and remembered this place and booked here. The price is great, especially if your company is trying to be fiscally sound. It is on a corner, so you will hear the street but it's not that bad. The rooms are updated from when I remembered. For some, the hotel may be a bit too standard with no frills but it was perfect for me: a queen bed, internet, TV, a well-appointed bathroom and heater/AC. I don't need much when at a conference and the hotel was within walking distance, so I got my steps in during the day. I walked through the main town with local restaurants and stores, so I felt safe. The staff is very nice and addressed me with kindness. For me, it was a nice mini-getaway even if it was work-related. read more

Due to unfortunate circumstances and me having to travel out of state to go see my dad who is 76 years old I tried to cancel my reservation, Not at last minute, but like three weeks in advance...they refuse to give me a refund! This is a converted strip motel so not a luxury hotel. The rooms are clean and nicely upgraded. Our first room had a nice but tiny bathroom so we asked to switch rooms. The owner or manager was very accommodating and was able to get us a room with a larger bathroom for our 4 day stay here. There is a front desk staff 24/7 which is reassuring with complimentary coffee/tea/ hot water. The rooms have a fridge but no microwave but they do have one to share in the lobby. The pool is not heated in the off season. There is a small amount of parking on the ground level and more underground. I do recommend slowing way down to turn into the parking area by the office as it is an awkward turn. The location is close to the downtown area which is what I was looking for. A bit farther for fisherman's wharf or cannery row (15min walk at least). There are restaurants walking distance in the downtown area. Traffic noise did not bother me as my husband snores louder so I use ear plugs. It is by a main street as others have mentioned but they do have new windows that help decrease the noise level when closed. Overall enjoyed my stay, thank you. I would normally rate this 3 stars but with the service +1 star. The hotel I was originally planning on staying at was fully booked so this was my backup and it worked out. If i can give it zero star, i would. This hotel has the worst customer service ever. From the receptionist to the manager. We booked this hotel for one night just to rest couple hours after a long drive before exploring Monterey and Carmel by the sea. Their policy clearly stated that check in time starts at 3pm and ends at "AT ANYTIME" . Check out time "11am" We got there around 7am which is clearly before the check out time 11am. We planned to rest that couple hours before we starts the day because of the long time we had. But they refused to check us in. Told us we are tagged as no show and told us to call expedia (which is what we booked through). Both receptionist and manager kept saying " well what do u want us to do? Check in time is 3pm and you are not here at check in time" VERY RUDE PEOPLE. I will never ever go back there and tell everyone i know about their customer service. Such a shame. read more

Okay, this hotel is not perfect, but I still think they deserve 5 stars because you get good value for what you pay, and everything was in working order during our stay. The office was a bit confusing to find because it's on the opposite side from the garage (they have both underground parking and a small upper lot). The front desk let us know that if hotel parking fills up at night (and it did), that we could park on the street until 11am. The staff checking us in quickly went over small details like that and gave us the key cards, no problems, no wait on a Saturday afternoon. Our room, furniture, and sheets were clean, and had everything we needed (there was no microwave in the room, as advertised on their website, but we didn't need it). The carpet was fine, no unpleasant stains. We were able to connect an HDMI cable to the TV and connect a latop, and change the source/input on the TV which was cool since they don't have movies for purchase. It's not a giant room, but it wasn't tiny either, so we were comfortable. They have lots of lights, including plenty of reading lights, which I think is uncommon. Also, lots of outlets, and conveniently placed near TV, desk, and both sides of the bed, good for charging phones. The bathroom was pretty standard, the shower was modern with nice touches, good water pressure, and shower head and space made for tall people.. yes higher than most hotels. Thermostat and mini fridge worked great, and I loved that checkout was at 12 noon, instead of 11am like most hotels (since that gives me more time in the morning). Also, this hotel is about a 10 minute walk to the Monterey wharf, which was ideal for our trip. read more

AVOID IT! I booked through Hotwire while using a "pet friendly" filter. When I got there, the guy informed me they don't allow dogs. Then he charged me a huge pet fee (that was suspiciously standard for an establishment that claims to not allow dogs). Then he threatened to have my dog killed by animal control if I left her alone in the room. So, I think they are pulling a scam where they include themselves in "pet friendly" filters so they can squeeze a large fee from people who they have fooled. They got me, but at least I can try to warn people away from this place. read more

Booked for $69.99 on a Friday night, but I can see why..... Your vacation oasis awaits you. This "boutique" hotel is conveniently located next to a major thoroughfare, Dennys, and a gas station. From the minute you walk into your room you will see the 60's decor and remember what is what like when people used to smoke in hotel rooms. Not to worry though, after a lengthy walk to Cannery Row, your family can wind down in the swimming pool which is in the middle of the parking lot. While in the pool your olfactory senses will be overjoyed with exhaust fumes of passing cars. Pro tip: If you get a room along the side of the property on the third floor you can see a sliver of the bay just past the PG&E transformer outside of your window. Also, sandalsin the room are also a must! If you should ever need anything from the staff they are always out and about, just look for someone who is disheveled and waking with a purpose, and bingo, that's your person. When it's time to wind down at night after a long day, you will surely fall asleep quickly to the hum of passing cars. Ah, and when you wake up, you will feel refreshed with a sore throat like you stayed in a seedy hotel in Reno. Not to worry, jump in and enjoy a warm shower to get your day started. As you unpack your wardrobe of the day from your suitcase, you will notice that the musty smell from the room has fragrantly permeated your attire. I have a policy also; never do business with liars and cheats. I had two rooms booked through Expedia. I needed to change the dates and called the hotel directly 3 days in advance. They said there was nothing they could do; it was non-refundable and non-changeable as per the booking agent Expedia. So I spent the next hour on Expedia chat. Expedia indirectly (apparently incapable of simple direct answers) stated that they could do me a favor and change the dates for a "penalty fee." If I paid an additional $350 for the $200 room, they could make the change. But there was no way I was getting a refund or even a partial credit. Expedia claimed the no refund policy was the hotels. There wasn't a visible policy about dogs, we had two dogs and we told them before our check in time and they accused us of wanting to "sneak them in" what bs is that. I booked a room with two queen beds for my husband and I and 2 kids thinking it's ok to have 4 people because it clearly states up to 4 people in the room but was charged an extra $35 per person!!!! Nowhere does it say that they charge extra if there are more than 2 people in the room (see pics below). $200/night seem high to me but I didn't mind because of the location but after getting charged extra, I ended up paying $300 for one night for a dingy old motel. If I knew this would happen, I would've just went to the hyatt or marriot and get my money's worth. Location was ok but with very limited parking! Not a quiet location since you're right next to a gas station with cars getting in and out all night. Water pressure was very low and there was barely any hot water. We were able to walk to Pacific Grove but probably a further walk than some would make. But super easy walk to Fishermans Warf! We would definitely stay here again. Let's get the bad part out of the way: the Stevenson is a cheaply-built concrete slab motel from the 1960's. It overlooks a Chevron Station. The walls are thin and if, like us, you stay on the second of its three stories you are likely to hear footfalls from the left and from the right, from up above and from down below. Short of tearing the whole thing down and starting over, I'm not sure that there is much to be done about that. There may be good things to say about 1960's architecture, but not about shoebox motel rooms in a concrete slab building. Especially when the bathrooms are tiny. Such buildings are intimate, I suppose, but not in a welcome way! So what is wrong with the Stevenson is hard-wired. What's right about it is not. Current management keeps the property clean, and it is recently-painted. The rooms are bright and freshly furnished without undue clutter and layers of accreted grime. The people who work there are friendly and helpful and seem to want to make things right. Rates are reasonable enough, the location is very good, and the underground parking lot ample. The continental breakfast was reasonably good - I give one point for the make-your-own waffle machine but take it right back for having only Coffee-mate next to the coffee pot. This ain't friggin' Kansas! In sum, the people who run the Stevenson are nice and for the most part making the best of it. Know what you are in for, and you may end up happy enuogh. read more

There are pros and cons at this place and I really wanted to love it, but the lack of sound-proofing made it very difficult to sleep. For the price, I felt like I didn't get what I expected. Pros: clean room that had been updated. Nothing fancy-but I wasn't expecting luxury. Our second floor, double queen room had a mini fridge, coffee maker, desk/chair and one other armchair. The room was on the smaller size with a large closet The bath had a sink, toilet, and small shower. The beds were comfortable and there were extra blankets and a pillow in the closet. Lots of outlets and phone charging plugs. It is walking distance to shops and restaurants and a short drive to Cannery Row. Cons: Parking onsite is limited. We were lucky to get a spot in the lot but with a bigger car it was tight. The hotel is close to a well traveled street and next door to a gas station. That, along with old doors that are not sealed, is where the big problems were for me. The noise level on Friday was bad. Lots of car and motorcycle engines revving, along with horns and car alarms. It was like I was out on the street. We could also hear talking, laughing and noise from rooms near us, creaking floors above us, as well as noise from the gas station and street. This went on several hours after the 10 pm "quiet hours" and I lay awake getting more and more frustrated that I had paid so much for this room. Hearing all the birds and other wildlife all night and early morning was at least a more pleasant sound, but not great if you want sleep. The staff was friendly, but when I checked out, I found it odd they did not ask how I enjoyed my stay. Maybe the owners know they have some issues but don't want to hear about them again. I hope this place can improve their sound-proofing so that it is worth the prices they are charging during peak season. Bottom line, I would stay elsewhere next time I visit Monterey. read more

Following the advice of another yelp reviewer who said they charged extra for kids (although this price bump up was not clear when they made the reservation), I double checked and found they were planning on charging me nearly TWICE per night compared to what it looked like they were charging me when I placed the reservation. The manager is unnecessarily rude and mean-spirited. I want to warn other in case they have similar experiences here. I had booked 1-day reservation a month in advance for a wedding. On the morning of the reservation, an emergency situation prevented me from going or attending the wedding, and I called to cancel the non-refundable reservation so the hotel would at least have a chance of rebooking that room. They charged me their full amount according to the policy I was aware of. Three hours later, I called again to see I could transfer the reservation to my friend who was still going to attend the wedding. The manager said hotels.com controlled the refund and booking policy and claimed he had no discretion over their policy. I called hotels.com whose representative was very understanding and said only the hotel had discretion for rebooking or refunds, and would ask the hotel on my behalf. The hotel would not refund nor re-accomodate, which I fully admit they did not need to do. I canceled the booking to be respectful of their business to let them rebook the room of my reservation knowing I would be charged. When I asked them if they could give any consideration, the manager just repeated that he had no discretion nor rooms available (which is not true), and started raising his voice instead of just politely declining. read more
