Very nice place to relax while in Monterey!! We spent $174 a night plus $20 pet fee. We like to stay here while in town checking out the beaches and scenery. The inside of the hotel main area is huge and very beautiful!! The old world style is very prominent as you see the details in the wood work, moldings, staircases and ornamentation!! Check things out and walk around to see the building as well.

NGIS Monterey is the Hotel Del Monte. It is was recommended by a peer and it was an excellent historic building to stay in that also houses the Navy Postgraduate School. While walking the halls, you can view old photos of the hotel and learn about its past. The hotel offers a complimentary breakfast from 6:30 - 9:30 on the bottom floor which was much nicer than the other NGISs I have stayed at. Being in academia, it was also interesting to see the school's various departments and mini-bookstore on the first floor. This hotel was also extremely convenient to the Old Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row. The only downside is guest parking can be busy during the weekday due to staff and students coming to the building. We will definitely becoming back and recommending it to friends who are eligible to stay at the facility.

Hotel Del Monte @ the Navy Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA - November 12, 2021.

AWARENESs: While in Monterey two years ago with my wife, and while visiting the Naval Postgraduate School and its facilities on the base, we happened upon the Navy Gateway Inn & Suites, which has since been renamed to the Hotel Del Monte. Seeing how nice the hotel looked, we vowed to stay here in the future if our travels ever took us back to Monterey. NARRATIVE: My family and I decided to stay overnight in Monterey from November 12 to the morning of the November 13, 2021. I originally made reservations through the DOD lodging website but was told I could have made them directly through the hotels front desk by calling them. We arrived early Friday afternoon and only one of the two rooms I reserved was ready so, we decided to drop our bags in the ready room then, hop back into the car and drive to Fishermans Wharf to take in the sights. After returning to the hotel around 4 pm, we were informed my second room was good to go. SCENE: Hotel Del Monte is located on the grounds of the Naval Postgraduate School. Access is limited to active, retired, reserve, DOD employees and both rated Disabled Veterans and their caregivers. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about Hotel Del Monte: "The Hotel Del Monte was a large resort hotel in Monterey, California, from its opening in 1880 until 1942. It was one of the finest luxury hotels in North America. During World War II, it closed and the building was leased to the United States Navy. It was first used by the Navy as a school where enlisted men spent the second, third, and fourth months of an eleven-month course being trained as electronic technicians. Later the Hotel Del Monte became the Naval Postgraduate School. Today, the building is called Herrmann Hall. It contains school administrative offices and the Navy Gateway Inns and Suites, a hotel." RECOMMENDATION(S): Hotel Del Monte is an old hotel and that evidence can be seen everywhere you look. The only suggestions I would recommend from the hotel staff is; 1. The grounds around the hotel are beautiful and beautifully kept but, they lack trash cans. The closets trash container I could find was located at the bocce ball courts, off the hotel grounds. Not even the designated smoking area, which are on the hotel grounds had a can. Other than the mentioned above, this hotel and its staff are exceptional and I would highly recommend staying here.

We stayed here for a weekend trip in June and wow what a beautiful and historical gem of a place. The buildings were gorgeous as was the ballroom and the grounds. The restaurant/bar inside was pretty decent too. We had a huge room and the cost was extremely reasonable. But also the location was fantastic!!! 10 minutes from the aquarium and 15 from Carmel!!! Gotta love the free breakfast with the Starbucks brewed coffee too! I can't wait to come back here! I just wish they had king size beds!

I am very happy with my stay. The room is very clean and spacious, and they also have cafeteria style breakfast in the morning. Trident room is open for dinner until 9pm. I would come back here again in the future

Historic old hotel with high ceilings, big windows, and allegedly the occasional ghost. The walls and ceilings are paper-thin and therefore a bit noisy. There is a limited continental breakfast downstairs and the Trident Room if you want a beer. Some rooms have kitchenettes. Hotel-high ceilings. Fall asleep to the barking of sea lions from the beach!

Good stop if you have the benefits. Well preserved historic building with nice size rooms and amenities. Feels like you are staying somewhere very special. It is an active Naval Installation, so amenities like food services, bars, nightlife are limited or nonexistent. However, the town of Monterey is iust minutes away.

A clean and comfortable room. Free internet and breakfast is included! My room had some sort of heat problem, but that was fixed with and slight opening of the window.

This is a beautiful hotel and I enjoyed my week-end stay here during Memorial Day Weekend. However, as visitors connected through a retired military, we had extreme difficulty getting onto the premises due to confusion/miscommunication between security and hotel/the host booking. Our friend who booked the 3 rooms for our group was told that our names would be at the gate and all we would need would be our licenses & vehicle registration to get on site. We had also all had communications with the hotel beforehand where we gave our credit card info to reserve the rooms and everything was good to go. When we arrived at the entrance, we were all told that none of our names were on the list and that we could not enter. It took TWO HOURS to resolve the misunderstanding. Our poor invitee, the father of a bride who was getting married the next day, had to come and fill out all the paperwork AGAIN from scratch. We finally got on but it was not easy and stressful to say the least. Further, our friend got locked out of her room on the second night of our stay because her key card stopped working. When she approached the front desk, she was told that there was NO RECORD of her staying there and that the room was marked as vacant. It later appeared like someone else's name had been included on her invoice for the room.... I just want to FOREWARN anyone who has reservations through friends/family to expect potential DELAYS and bumps. Like I said, the hotel is gorgeous and a great bargain, but be prepared for adventures.

Can't complain about the price and the convenience, plus PCS priority helps secure a comfy room. Hallways are old and creaky and walls can be thin, but it's a historic iconic hotel. On a quiet week it shouldn't be a problem. The room is spacious and made for the longer term stay, complete with a storage closet and a kitchenette with mini fridge, keurig, microwave, stovetop, a few place settings and a small eating or prep table. There's room between the bed and desk to move about comfortably. High ceilings add to the spacious element. Friendly staff at the desk and easy check in. Glad to make it our last stop

It is imperative to inaugurate this "FIRST" review of this very unique establishment by stating that this magnificent hotel is accessible to military members and their immediate families exclusively. Meaning: Active Duty Personnel, Drilling Reservists, Retired Military, and all Dependants' of the aforesaid. That being said, if you're "not" in the military and would like to experience this semi-private location, I suggest that you hit up your military friend connections; odds are that if you know of someone who is authorized to stay at this hotel, you can reap the benefits and all of its splendor. This hotel is a place of great historical significance. Formerly known as the Del Monte Hotel it has been the home of the U.S. Navy for 100 years as of 2010.

A hidden Jewel. My family was in town for a Surprise Birthday party and I opted to book at Gateway Inns as I am retired military. They have always provided a safe clean economical room and I have always been happy with their service. However nothing could have prepared me for the facility we were staying at. A historical landmark, quiet peaceful location in the entrance to Monterey Bay and Warf area. The grounds were wonderful inside and out. Lots to take in. Plus the location for future visits in choice. Just minutes from Cannery Row, Fisherman's Warf, 17 Mile Drive, and Lovers Point. A short drive up the coast and you'll find yourself in Santa Cruz or Silicon Valley. Ideally a great jumping off location. The rooms / Suites over sized and upgraded. Very roomy and some rooms are Pet Friendly. For the little ones just outside the gate is Dennis the Menace Park, playground and lake. There is a small exchange and mobile Starbucks on site if you forgot something as well as an exchange gas station. The price is definitely right. $83 bucks a night. I did hear that prices will be going up slightly in the future but not by much. Check in time 3pm. There is a very nice pub and Restaurant on site. The Trident room. didn't get a chance to break bread there this go around but I do like options. too many other great place in town to try. Anyways thought I share this new found Jewel. Enjoy and safe travels. The Navarro's

Such a beautiful historic base! We love the grounds and the hotel itself is just incredible. We have been so impressed with the kindness and helpfulness of the staff. They have gone above and beyond to help us with our complicated reservation during most of the summer months. Annette & Joy who work at the front desk have been especially sweet. I highly recommended staying here if you get the chance!

The hotel offers a nightly happy hour and musical performances. During our visit we had the pleasure to discover a highly talented artist by the name of Adrea, who has the most incredible voice and presence. We were so impressed by her and were very fortunate that she performed both nights of our visit. It was a performance we would have gladly paid to see, she is a rising talent for sure. I can't state how exceptional our experience was to enjoy the music in such an elevated atmosphere, relaxing by the fire, enjoying the outstanding craft cocktails by their highly talented mixologist. Schooners is not to be missed, the food is as outstanding as the ocean view! This was our second time staying in Monterey and I had been looking forward to staying at this hotel someday. It was everything I imagined and more! The service was exceptional from the valet to the bellhop to registration and restaurant staff. We are also IHG elite members and we were given a room upgrade with a thoughtful card and gift for our anniversary. Our room was facing the ocean on Cannery Row with a balcony. It was a very nice, spacious and clean room with alot of thoughtful attention like providing refillable water bottles, robes and an amazing Nespresso machine. There was also a wine bar and snacks available for purchase. The hotel had a wonderful scent throughout and we enjoyed walking through the ocean vibes staircase featuring a jellyfish. Definitely look for that! We loved having our anniversary dinner at The C Restaurant, but that will be another well earned review on it's own. However, we did have two negative experiences, one was that we waited a bit too long for our car at the valet once and there was an accidental spa charge on our receipt when checking out. I still gave them 5 stars because they rectified it right away and even removed the valet charge for us, which was much appreciated. I would love to come back to this hotel someday to bring my parents and we hope you love it too!!

Toddler Notes for the Hotel: [[ Pro's ]] 1.) The room we got on the 3rd floor corner was very spacious and had a ton of room. We were able to set up a pack and play and still had a generous amount of room left to walk around. 2.) Blackout shades and see-through shades for double coverage which keeps the room nice and dark at night. 3.) Location is great as it's super close to Cannery Row, lots of restaurants, and Monterey Bay Aquarium which was our ultimate destination. 4.) Parking Garage is free and decently sized and can fit a mid-size SUV with no issues. It will get tighter if you have a humongous full-SUV though (see pictures). [[ Con's ]] 1.) So Many STAIRS. Like legitimately, there are so many stairs. I took a ton of pictures to give you an idea. Stairs coming down from the elevator, stairs between floors, etc. This is not very young kid friendly when you have a stroller, a bunch of kid items, etc. I'm not sure I would stay here again due to the amount of stairs and inconvenience. 2.) Noise Level - If your kid is sensitive to noise, be prepared to have a ton of sound machines because you really could hear a ton of things. Cars, honking, other people's rooms, etc. 3.) Shower - It did seem a bit rusty in certain places and our shower wouldn't drain so there was a big puddle the whole time we were showering. The steam also set off the fire alarm like another person mentioned. Quick conclusion - I think it's an okay IHG hotel but not very good for families with young kids. Good for the location though.

I would definitely stay here again if I wasn't looking to splurge and just wanted a room for the night.

We only tried breakfast at the restaurant but it was great. The serving sizes were huge. Definitely could have split one plate between 2 people. Even the kids meal was a large portion size. I will say however, that this is not the most accessible hotel if you have a stroller or wheelchair. The lobby has an accessible lift (the entrance is at the bottom of a small staircase), but we didnt know this when first walking over. So I spent a few minutes walking around the property trying to look for a way to get my stroller and 2 kids up to the front desk. The lift is also pretty narrow. I have a tandem double stroller so I was able to fit, but I dont think I would have been able to use the lift if I had a side by side double stroller. The only other way to get up to the lobby is to go through one of the elevators in the parking garage. But if you didn't park in the garage, then you'd have to walk your stroller (or move your wheelchair) into the parking garage and then use the correct elevator to get to the main lobby. Having small kids, this was just more inconvenient than anything. Not the hotel's fault, but just not a great fit for us at this time. I am grateful that they have multiple elevators throughout the parking garage so that you dont have to walk all the way across the property to use the elevator. The hotel was also recently renovated, but the attention to detail just wasnt there. One of the towel hooks in our bathroom was hanging off our wall, the light in the hallway was crooked and was very wobbly, and there was a panel that was supposed to covering the wires from the phone that was kinda just hanging loosely. Not a big deal for us, but just things that we noticed that could've used some work. Overall, not a bad hotel, but the stroller accessibility was just not a great fit for us as a family with young kids.

So either housekeeping was being dishonest about finding it originally, or they're being dishonest about changing the bedding between guests.) And now, after nearly a month of waiting, calling, and emailing, the kindle was FINALLY mailed. My initial review still stands. What an incredibly disappointing and frustrating experience. "Disappointed" would be an understatement. Booked one night (using points) at this property and really wish we hadn't. Was charged a mystery $50 fee at check in. Then at checkout we asked what it was for, the guy working the front desk didn't have a clue and he tried to say he'd fix it "when the computers were working again." When we called his bluff by saying we'd come back in an hour, it was magically fixed. Shady! The room itself was meh... the floors were strangely sloped/didn't feel level. The real kicker here: there was no bedside table on my side of the bed (an inconvenience in itself), so my kindle was placed on the bed with me. I unfortunately forgot my kindle on the bed and didn't realize until we had checked out and were hours away. We called the hotel and were told they didn't find anything in the room. I know for a fact it was left in that room (I've double triple quadruple checked my luggage and there's no where else it could possibly be). Again, SHADY.
