I visit Carmel/Monterey several times a year for dog competitions, so I'm always on the lookout for dog-friendly hotels. This inn caught my attention because reviewers mentioned it was quiet, which is so important to me as a light sleeper, and I'd agree it lived up to that reputation. I called the Sunday before my Friday arrival to request a quiet room, but was told to call back on my arrival day. By then, I'd already been assigned Room 121 on the second floor. While it faced the street (which some said could be noisy), the traffic quieted down quickly in the evening, and the area overall was peaceful. There was a small cookout down towards the beach at the Asilomar Convention Center, but it didn't last late into the night. The room was very clean, the bed was wonderfully comfortable, and the blackout curtains worked perfectly. The bathroom and curtains could use a bit of updating, but the hot water was plentiful, and I appreciated having a fireplace for cooler seasons (though I didn't use it this time). The mini fridge was great and not as noisy as some can be. The location was a big plus -- serene, yet just a short drive to downtown Pacific Grove and Carmel. Deer Haven was the hidden gem we were looking for. The motel rooms were so clean and nicely furnished. The in- room fireplace was a really nice touch that is rarely found in a small Inn. The staff was amazing! We had made an error when completing our online reservation and the management was very understanding while working with us to resolve the error. If you're familiar with Monterey and Pacific Grove hotels/motels, you know that the facilities and the amenities are often a bit different than what you'd expect in urban big city, or even in a suburban sprawl. These hotels are all a bit older and dated, but they all have a rustic charm and beachside/oceanside vibe to them. Deer Haven is no different - rooms are clean and well maintained. Most rooms have a gas fireplace that is wonderful to cozy up to at night. Bathrooms are clean and tidy. Parking in the lot adjacent is convenient. Staff is friendly and able to help answer questions and assist with late check in. Beds are comfy and clean. During the busy season it's very hard to find any accommodation in PG/Monterey, but I'd say if you're able to find a deal here, take it - it's well worth it for the location, right next to Asilomar and the State Beach. read more

Aside from it being a place away from the city, I'm truly not happy with this place. My wife and I stayed here most of this week and couldn't get a any sleep due to people on the second floor room walking around with alot of stomping back and forth. All night. Notified the front desk in the morning and only got an acknowledgement and no enforcement of rules for the willful and unapologetic disturbance of whoever was upstairs that had a "do not disturb" sign on their door. What a joke of request from the noise makers. The people who made unending noise just stayed and stomped. Adults? No! read more

I arrived here after midnight after the lobby is closed. After 3 hours travel. To find that the toilet was not working. We had to use a trash can to dump water into tank for it to flush. I called the lobby and was told they'd send someone in the morning. The next AM, I checked in with front desk and was told the toilet would be fixed while we were out for the day. I called around 4:45 pm to confirm it was fixed and I was told it was "working". We arrived at 8 pm- to find it was still not flushing. The front desk mgr came to inspect and determined that it was broken. Telling me someone would come THE NEXT DAY to fix it. And showed me a way to jimmyrig it by turning the water line on/off. I was not happy. I expressed that they had been given ALL day to make sure this was fixed and I didn't care to jimmyrig the toilet. This is not what I paid for. I demanded my money back or another room. They said they were sold out. And could not make that decision. I asked for the owners contact information and they said they would reach out. But not to expect a response on a weekend. Finally on the 3rd night all was in working order. I don't think it's fair that I had to pay for a room with non working facilities. I have a family with a young children and the toilet is a basic necessity. The mgmt was very kind and understanding but I need answers and remedy. They were given a chance to fix it and failed leaving us high and dry. i filed a complaint through expedia and the owner also told them that they would not refund me for anything!! terrible place! read more

I'm giving this Inn 5 stars because it is our go to place to stay. Rooms are small but who needs a big room when there is so much to do in the area. As it's name implies you can regularly spot deer roaming around. The staff is always friendly and it's a very quiet area. I sleep very well there. It's always clean. It's walking distance to the ocean, a little hike. Centralized to everything in Pacific Grove and a few minutes away from Monterey and Carmel. I love the fireplace in our room as well. read more

My dad booked this place for our family vacation and we loved it here! Biggest bonus..they accept pets and we never travel without our Snowshoe Siamese cat, Poppies. We enjoyed the proximity to Asilomar Beach (5 minute walk), Cannery Row (5 minute drive), and Point Lobos Reserve (15 minute drive). We found it to be quiet and comfortable. Nice place to stay when visiting the Asilomar convention center, across the street. Older, rooms pretty dark, but still acceptable. Parking is tough for larger vehicles. Making reservations in advance is a nightmare. The reservation manager, Roshan Patel, said he could not make a reservation in advance because prices were not identified in advance. Said to make the reservations not more than one month ahead. Bugged him for three months and he finally agreed to make a reservation for me, at twice the amount the motel usually charged. I hope when I get there, that I will be charged the correct amount instead of getting ripped off by this guy. His incompetence and angry, confrontational attitude ruin it for us. read more

This is a very nice place. The room was nice and very clean when we arrived. It's close to the beach and not far from Cannery Row. The front staff was very friendly. We had a 2 Queen room with a fireplace. It is nice to open the window on a cool day and have the fireplace going. Also, having a fire pit in the front was nice. The only downside would be we could hear the road noise, and the bed was not very comfortable. It wasn't awful, but wasn't soft. The website shows pictures of breakfast and in the room the book mentions breakfast but it is no longer offered, only coffee and tea. I would definitely stay here again. read more

Some of the other reviews are a bit harsh. Yes, the Dear Haven is a low key, low budget motel and doesn't offer a lot of amenities. However, I have stayed at alot of 5 star to 1 star hotel/motels in the past and this one is pretty fair. The rooms are updated and remodeled but admittedly the shower is low water pressure and has other issues. The managwment however, is very nice and responsive and they post on their purchase receipt no breakfast bar (as most hotels do at this COVID time period). The motel is close to the beach, 17 mile drive, downtown and is close to Monterey Bay Acquarium. AND, they were much cheaper by 1/2 than similar motels down the street. Had a lovely stay at this hotel last weekend! We came for a two day Indian wedding ceremony (happening at hotels with $400-$600 a night rooms) so we were looking for something simple and affordable. Deer Haven was just that and perfect for our needs. When I checked us in on Friday the receptionist was very nice, same age as me and we talked about weddings and what to wear (noticed my henna!). Our room was 110, lower level corner. Never heard people above us. Never heard people to our left. Straight up, this was such a quiet and peaceful hotel, it felt like we were there by ourselves (which is wild because it's definitely a busy time of year for travel)!!! The beds were comfy. We didn't use the fireplace. TV was old school (no apps) so it was fun to watch Comedy Central and other channels we used to like when cable was king. And lastly, we saw deer! LOTS of deer, especially in the mornings!!! If you're looking for a nice affordable place to lay your head down while you explore pebble beach and Monterey, you should book this place. Edit: adding more detail! It IS close to the beach! Our friend spent both of her mornings walking to the beach and back. Is the beach directly across the street? No, but that's ok. Use your legs and explore! The trails are very close, and she loved walking around in the mornings. The hotel itself is in a bit of a residential patch, but I grew up in Half Moon Bay so this place felt like I was walking around home. I knew that it wouldn't be "central" like you walk out the door and 5 restaurants are there, but hotels like that were double or more in price. No instructions on how to use the fireplace. We didn't use it. The beds are hard and very high to get on. ! The pillows were pretty good though. The shower had either a trickle setting or spray your skin off setting. I loved that the tv worked lol...turned right on and off and no channel issues! Housekeeping upon request, which I also like. We needed a little place for 1 night in Monterey and the stay here was lovely, charming and with all the basics we needed in a clean environment and a warm comfy bed. And the wifi works great which is an essential because the mobile network is not great in this area. Quick tips: - There is a little tree lined trail across the road, lovely for a morning walk. - Book a top floor room or a room with no top floor for light sleepers. -The 121+ numbers look like the balconies can get nice and sunny for a morning stretch. - There is a micro wave in the room, in case you need to get up earlier than breakfast time. read more

My boyfriend and I booked a room for one night on July 22, 2023 and I'm grateful it was for only one night. The room reeked of urine and despite having kept the windows wide open all night and wearing a mask, the unpleasant odor persisted. This is a pet friendly hotel and unfortunately, management did not take care of the problem. The room was not carpeted but I strongly suspect that a huge, upholstered chair in the room could have been the culprit. I made an online reservation through Deer Haven Inn's website in February 2023, six months ahead of my travel date in August. Now I get a call, May 2023, from them saying they can't honor my reservation because they need to shut down a wing in their inn. That's the most lame excuse I've heard. The real reason is they want to rent out my room for more days at a higher rate because the Monterey Concours d'elegance event is happening that week and all hotels/inn/motels are booked solid. My stay was for two nights. Since I will be in Monterey that week, I will stop by Deer Haven Inn to see if in deed they have a full wing shut down. This sounds pretty stupid, but I tend to view hotels like I view cheap, Chinese food. Going in, you should know what you're getting. You don't go to a Motel 6 expecting a five star experience. You don't book a top floor suite at the Bellagio and expect to see roaches crawling all over the bed. And when you go in the middle of the road, like picking places like Deer Haven Inn (or the Candy Cane in Anaheim, for that matter), you shouldn't expect an extravagant room with walls thick enough to deaden all outside noise, but you can at least expect it to be clean, comfortable, and with a free bottle or two of lotion. And at that, Deer Haven performs very admirably. The surrounding area is beautiful, wooded in pines, and very quiet in regards to nearby cars driving by. The beach is a short, two block walk away and a great way to start the cold, Summer mornings in the Bay. Cannery Row is a quick, mile drive away, making the area easily accessible to tourists like myself. And the staff here was some of the nicest I've ever encountered while away on the road. As for the rooms, they're fairly compact, your standard hotel with two queen beds, a table, and a dresser with a flat screen. The bathrooms were off to the side, out of sight, and well stocked with shampoo and towels. Yes, there was some peeling to the walls, some of the thin tiling in the shower had started to come unglued, but, again, this is a three star hotel for a three star hotel price. And for that price comes a continental breakfast with packaged danishes, apples, coffee, and orange juice with packets of jellies and butter on the side. It's not the best of meals, definitely nothing to look forward to with any excitement, but it is better than nothing and you can enjoy it outside, around cozy fire in the middle of your table, as you enjoy the cool wind coming off the water. No, it's not the Ritz Carlton, but it's not a place you rent by the hour, either. It's very adequate for what we needed at the time and a pretty good hotel to stay at for the price. If we come back to the area again, one day, I can easily find myself booking a couple more rooms to stay. read more

One of the worst hotels we have ever stayed in. No A/C Not sure if all the rooms have same beds; as many commented on their comfort. Our room had the worst beds ever. Beds were hard and completely uncomfortable. No breakfast (due to covid) No daily housekeeping- in fact when I called for them to replenish towels she asked if I had taken the used towels to the laundry room so they could be laundered! Really? Seems the big appeal of this place is pet friendly. We were one of the only people without dogs. Dogs were quiet for the most part. No sweetener or cream for coffee maker in room. The other thing that ticked me off was the complete BS excuse they gave me when checking in. This is a highly affordable place to stay while visiting Pacific Grove or Monterey. It is within a nice walking distance of Asilomar State Beach, which has great tide pools. Great dining is just a few minutes drive away or you can use a delivery app to have food brought your way. Pets allowed and all folks must agree to a noise ordinance. The room had a fridge, TV, very stiff bed, and basic amenities. Bring your own soap and toiletries because what is provided is in the shower and you have to pump it out (like at a gym). I think the soap and shampoo were the same product. We arrived about 2 hours early before check-in and we couldn't check in early. We went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and dinner before heading back to check in. For the price, I think we will be back for a quick getaway. read more

I am a little late on my review for its place but better late than never! My partner (Jason J.) and I came here for our 3rd anniversary. The trip itself was very last minute as we normally celebrate in our hometown of Sacramento, but Pacific Grove is such a special place for me that I wanted to share it with Jason J. We arrived on a Thursday evening at about 8pm (totes took off work early to get to PG early and what happens, we still end up late, lol). We were greeted by Roshan at the front desk. Very nice guy who was super welcoming. I knew immediately we were going to enjoy our stay. The rooms themselves are so quaint. Spacious bathroom, nice, comfy king sized bed with a small lounge chair and a tiny seater table. Just as cute as can be. Our room also came furnished with a fireplace which we didn't get to use but I imagine would have been such a romantical touch. The inn grounds itself is very well kept and very quiet. A few reviews said they had some noise issues, but we didn't hear a thing. Compared to some of the places we've stayed in places like San Francisco this spot was cake. An added perk was the complimentary breakfast, which I enjoyed both days of our stay (I'm sorry but I have to feed my curves and swerves). Loved being able to take my breakfast and eat outside at the beautiful stoned table that doubled as a fire pit. So relaxing! Location of this place was also so ideal. We were close so everything we needed and the scenery was great. Jason got to see a few Bambi's while we were there (that's what he called every doe he saw, lol). Roshan at the front desk was extremely knowledgable of the area and was able to suggest a few great lunch/dinner spots (many thanks kind sir!) Finally the pricing. Ya can't beat the pricing of this place given the location. Since it was such a last trip for us we loved being able to get away to such a relaxing place like Pacific Grove while not spending the equivalent of a flight to Europe for two nights. Also, if you frequent Deer Haven Inn you get the repeat customer discount -- hay hay now! All in all we both highly recommend this place if you're staying in Pacific Grove. We stayed here for one night over the weekend. I'm giving it 3 stars because the beds were comfortable & because of its PRIME location to the gorgeous ocean. That being said... there are SO many other places to choose from within the same vicinity. Due to Covid they aren't serving any sort of continental breakfast, which, in my opinion is super lame. I've stayed at places where they've made it work by either having one staff member grabbing food for people, or dropping things at the door. If you normally have the added bonus of breakfast... can't you at least put good coffee in the room? It was DISGUSTING! So cheap. Our towels were covered in stains, the floor was dirty (got my feet covered in dirt by walking barefoot ) AND they basically put two sheets on the bed. We were all shivering during the night. Definitely need to step up their customer service. With so many nearby motels, inns & hotels to choose from (that are cleaner AND still serve coffee/breakfast) I would steer clear of this one. Ok, so we were looking for a place to stay in Monterey for a few days, but everything we found was either a boring chain or close to the beach and significantly more expensive. We wanted to stay as close as possible to the beach so my search expanded to Pacific Grove and I came across the Deer Haven Inn & Suites. We chose the Deer Haven over a couple of other choices in Pacific Grove because some of their rooms had full kitchens or kitchenettes. The best deal I could find ended up being through Deer Haven's website so I booked a queen suite with a full kitchen for three nights and ended up paying $80/night. The place is within walking distance to the beach... A short walk through the Asilomar Conference Grounds as others have mentioned here. The queen suite is pretty sweet too... It's like a small apartment: you walk in to the living room, then there's the dining room and kitchen. The rather large bedroom is off the living room to the left and is a separate room with a door. After our experience with rock hard beds in Santa Barbara on our way up here, we weren't sure what to expect when we turned in for the night. We were pleased with the beds. They weren't bad at all.. certainly comfy enough for a good night's sleep. The only real negatives are that the walls and ceiling seem to be pretty thin.. whoever was upstairs made a lot of noise. It sounded like they were jumping around, letting golf balls bounce on the floor, etc. It wasn't a constant problem, but annoying for the hour or so it went on, until I went upstairs and asked them to keep it down. Other pluses include a free wifi and free daily continental breakfast from 7AM - 10AM, featuring bagels, bread/toast, donuts, cereal, oatmeal, OJ, some sort of mango tropical juice, coffee, hot chocolate and milk. Parking was also a plus... the queen suite included an assigned, covered parking space, but we were able to park right outside our window on the street. This is a great location when visiting the Monterey Bay area... conveniently located and only minutes from all of the local attractions like Fisherman's Wharf, the aquarium, Carmel, the 17 Mile Drive, Cannery Row, etc. read more

I stayed one night on Labor Day weekend. As we went into the room it looked good until you looked closer. There was hairs on the comforter, chocolate stains on the sheet (I hope), then piss stains all on the mattress pad. I went to the front desk and they at least had new bedding quickly. The bathroom was very awkward with having to close the door to get into the shower. The shampoo provided made you smell like wet dog after. The iron in the room kept leaking water everywhere. The AC was broken in the room making it hot during the day. At night the fire place was the best thing about the room. The power went out also while we were there making it inconvenient when I was getting ready to go out for breakfast. I would recommend bringing your own bedding and to not have high expectations. read more
