We had a wonderful stay at Hotel Abrego! We got a great price and loved our room, which included a fireplace and patio. The free breakfast was a huge plus and especially helpful on mornings when we had early excursions planned. The complimentary glass of wine each evening was also such a pleasant bonus! We were thrilled that our room was ready at 2:00 p.m., allowing us to check in early, and we were also able to get a 1:00 p.m. checkout, which we really appreciated. Between the great value, comfortable room, convenient amenities, and excellent service, Hotel Abrego has definitely become our go-to hotel in Monterey. What can I say about a truly lousy, disappointing experience? The overall category that hotels fall into is the "hospitality industry." Sadly, many operators in that sector see their roles as for-profit businesses. We checked into Hotel Abrego on a Friday afternoon. Then the craziness began. It took us fifteen minutes to find our room. We had a map and I speak Spanish so I was able to ask two maids where the elusive room was located. Turns out the entrance was twenty yards from the hotel lobby. In retrospect, finding the entry made difficult because so atypical. Photo attached. It was secluded behind shrubs, unmarked, and parallel to line-of-sight from the parking lot. Next amazingly frustrating Abrego experience. Photo attached. The well-hidden entrance had its own surprises. You know those carts hotels provide so you can lug all your stuff to your room with one trip? Well here's an unfun challenge for you. Try getting a heavily loaded one of those over that thick metal barrier while simultaneously turning that absurdly tight corner. It is just as difficult as it is unbelievably allowed to be present there to daunt even the most intrepid visitor. We then discovered that we had to walk to the far end of the long hallway to access the elevator, then reverse course and retrace our steps to get to our room. I do not recall such a setup, where the elevator in a hotel is located remotely from the entrance. No one would design a hotel in such a manner. Could the old what looked to me to be a former apartment building have been retrofitted in more guest friendly manner? We shall never know. The room itself was a bit more Spartan for a three hundred dollar per night price tag would suggest. It was "nice", though clearly the product of what I mention above to be a for-profit corporation. I was-and I do not exaggerate here-stunned when I went out on the small deck/balcony. Photo attached. We had a shared patio experience with whoever was staying in the adjacent room. There were even chairs conveniently placed in position for me to climb over onto their deck or them onto mine. Was my neighbor a kindly old lady with a walker, fully incapable of accessing my room? Perchance a serial killer? It seemed to me to be an absolute toss of the dice probability. So, not only was I stressed in general, but we had to keep the door locked and not enjoy the cool breezes of Monterey, I can tell you that for nothing. My next stunning experience was what we'll call my Quest for Ice. I recalled not hearing the distinctly loud ice maker, so I had no obvious clue. I paced the long hallways twice before running across a maid. She said the building had an ice maker, but that it had been broken for "a while". She said they were waiting for a part. I went to the front desk. They confirmed the waiting-for-a-part rumor. I came to learn that the nearest ice was on the floor above the lobby. On our way back to the room that night I did myself a favor and bought a bag of ice at the gas station across the street. Seriously, why add stress? Plus, for all I knew, the same rare part might have finally given up the ghost on that last source of Abrego ice. The next morning I showered and stepped out into a pool of water. Photo attached. Each time I showered, the same unwelcome puddle was there to greet me. Was the door too small? The seals unsealed? Don't know. Don't care. Just wish it wasn't there. Next stunning Abregism. We went about our Saturday and returned to find that our room was inexplicably not made-over. I went to the front desk, because we needed towels. I said I guessed that room service was not part of an Abergo stay. I was told no, room service was available. All one had to do was ask for it the previous day before 09:00. Cue the crickets. No one told us there was such a rule to the Abrego Game. Clearly we had checked in Friday in the afternoon, so Saturday room service was, already and unbeknownst to us, but a pipe-dream. However, a heads up that we would never have our room cleaned if we didn't specifically and very early in the day ask for it was, seriously, another stunning revelation. I'm using that word stunning a lot in this review, aren't I? And then there was the swimming pool. Picture attached. It was sad for me to look at it from my communal balcony. In case you can't see it plainly, the Jacuzzi clarifies my issue. The pool water was the color of green tea. Notice that the darker tiles at the bottom of the pool are fuzzy compared to the Jacuzzi's sharp lines. I will allow you to draw your own conclusions. I have drawn mine. The last Abergoism. On day one of our stay, I ate some peanuts-in-the-shell. SF Giant's brand, naturally. As any in-the-shell fan can attest to, no way around it, you're gonna make a mess, at least a little one. Whenever my husband and I come to Monterey, we stay at Hotel Abrego. We've stayed here three times, and I absolutely love this property. Rooms are extremely comfortable and clean. Great beds and pillows! I loved the fact that our room had a fireplace. The lobby is lovely, and complimentary wine is served during happy hour. It's nice to sip a glass in front of their fireplace, or outside on their patio by the fire pit. A hot breakfast, very well made, is a great element of Hotel Abrego. The hotel also has its own restaurant for dinner. I've not eaten there, but it looks great! The heated pool and hot tub are fabulous! I loved being able to have an early morning swim and a night soak. The fitness center is also a great perk. It has everything you need for a solid workout. Grounds are clean and well kept. Location is central or downtown Monterey. There's a few walkable restaurants across the street (pizza, Chinese, Thai, and coffee shop for breakfast and lunch). It's also only five minutes from Heirloom Pizza, the best pizza place I've ever been to, in Monterey or anywhere else. Hotel employees understand what hospitality is all about. Hotel Abrego is an acceptable accommodation but there are definitely some areas for improvement here. When it comes to hotels, the three areas I prioritize most are cleanliness, comfort, and safety. In addition to overall service and price/value of course. After reading the reviews, I requested a room on the top floor in the main building with the elevator and really appreciated that they called me to follow up in advance of my stay to tell me they could honor this request and would also honor my request of a microwave in the room. When I arrived, the check in process was quick and the room was ready even though I arrived almost an hour ahead of check in. The microwave was not in the room but when I let the man at the desk know, who I believe was the manager, he immediately contacted someone to bring up a microwave to my room and they arrived within about half an hour. I did appreciate that they made this accommodation for me. - I felt very safe in the hotel itself and coming/going from the parking lot in the evening. - While the bed was a too firm for my personal preference, the pillows were nice and I still was able to fall asleep without any difficulty. I did not wake up sore so solid points there. Cleanliness/General maintenance I had a few issues with...there was a small stain on the flat sheet in a pretty noticeable spot. While it was clearly an old stain and the linens appeared clean - it should never have made it to that bed. There was also a large dark hair on the shampoo bottle in my shower and I noticed it immediately so I do not know how it was overlooked - hair is one of my biggest icks. My other issue was with the TV and remote. I first picked up the remote and the back fell off of it. A simple piece of tape could have fixed this but the remote itself also seemed a bit unhygienic and really needs a replacement as well as the TV itself. I had planned on staying in to watch the world series and was very disappointed that the channel as well as several other channels basically had no service. I let the manager know and he did refund me the $20 amenities fee, but I would have rather paid the $20 and been able to watch the world series on the TV instead of finding a streaming feed on facebook and watching from my phone. The morning breakfast was also quite disappointing unfortunately. I was down there fairly early but the foods which should be warm were not warm and there was no microwave in the breakfast room to warm anything up. The offerings were also quite basic and limited compared to other hotels I have stayed at - less expensive hotels for that matter. I had seen in a previous review that there were overnight oats and chia pudding with berries and was very excited for this only to find nothing buy yoplait yogurt in the fridge :( I know I should not have assumed those items would be there still but it wad honestly the worst hotel breakfast I have ever had. The quality and variety was just not good. The only thing that was decent was the breakfast burrito, which I took with me to go and heated up when I got back home later that day. I think that Hotel Abrego has a lot of potential but fell short in areas that could easily be improved. The hotel itself feel dated and in need of an upgrade. I paid notably more at Hotel Abrego than the other two hotels I stayed at in Pleasant Hill and Moss Landing and while I recognize the area is a reflection of the price, it was definitely disappointing when I thought I was going to be treating myself to a nicer hotel. My wife and I stayed here last weekend without our daughter since my mother is law is in town. We chilled in Carmel and stayed here for the night. It's a lovely place with great service from the front desk. You do get a free glass of wine so long as you go to the bar before 9pm. The gentleman working the front desk was very helpful whenever we had questions. Parking is quite plentiful even on the weekend. Finally breakfast is free. Even though we arrived close to the 10 am closing time there was still plenty of food. They do a good job of refilling the eggs, the burritos, etc. They make sure the oatmeal js always full. The only issue was not finding a good seat. So get to breakfast early! read more

Just got back from a little getaway and wanted to share my thoughts on the place. Overall, it was a pretty decent stay. They even had some complimentary wine waiting, which was a really nice and unexpected touch. The breakfast wasn't exactly gourmet, but I could tell they were putting in an effort, which I appreciated. The TVs in the room were a bit of a letdown, though. Was recently at this hotel while I attended The Monterey Jazz Festival ...my stay was from Thursday thru Monday morning.this was a bad experience...requested a handicap accessible room..didn't happen...also requested to have room cleaned 3 times which didn't happen. Traveling with a toddler has its challenges, and Marquis didn't hesitate to help me heat up my daughter's dinner in the hotel kitchen and then offered to send up a microwave to our room..That level of kindness and "can-do" attitude really set the tone for our trip. Later in the evening, we grabbed dinner at the hotel bar, the complimentary wine was definitely a plus as it was a mommy daughter trip and the experience continued to impress. Our bartender, Rob, was absolutely wonderful. He was so attentive, sweet, and made sure we had everything we needed for a delicious, relaxing meal. THE MEAL- insane. This weekend was the annual Car show experience. I was fortunate to find an awesome hotel to stay in when all the other hotels were full. Hotel Abrego is a wonderful hotel with a delicious hot breakfast and a yummy charcuterie in the evening. A large parking lot to park in and it was also included in the price of my stay. My room was very spacious and had a fireplace. The staff was great and so helpful. Marcese stored our luggage while we went to lunch and gave us waters for our drive home. We stayed for a last minute overnight. Prices were high for the weekend, so we grabbed a king room with a fireplace on hotels.com for 500. We were assigned a room on the street which was not ideal. The sound of Harley's going by kept setting off car alarms. The place was ok. With a little more effort, it could be very nice. Even if they just cleaned the common areas! Came here with my friend for a mini getaway trip and honestly loved our stay. The hotel itself is sooo charming. I love the aesthetics. We didn't get around to using the pool but there is one and it looked nice. The parking is a little tight on more crowded days if you have a big vehicle but still available if you're driving. We were traveling up and down the Cali/Oregon coast, and stayed at 5 hotels during the week. I rate Hotel Abrego number 3 out of 5. It was a fairly expensive hotel, which husband chose and booked. I tend to shop around more than he does, for the best deals, and probably would not have selected this one. It did look nice from the thumbnail. The exterior is pleasant enough, but nothing to write home about, though parking is free, which is always a plus. There was plenty of room in the parking lot. The receptionist was a very nice man, off to the right, was a bar, where several guests were getting their Welcome Drink, and having a chat with the barman. I could also see a patio off to the side, if you wanted to take your drink outside in the afternoon sunshine. We were tired, had driven from San Francisco, encountered some huge traffic jams, and just wanted to dump our luggage and go eat. We were told our building was directly across the parking lot, on the 2nd floor. There are no elevators, so you've got to walk up a flight of stairs with your luggage - immediately, I'm deducting a star for that. The room itself looked welcoming and cosy, in "earth tones" aka browns and beiges. It has an electric fire?!? In California? There was no chance that we'd be lighting that. The AC was quiet fortunately. There is a faux balcony, that you can't rally climb out onto, though judging by the state of the insect mesh screen, people had attempted to do just that. He metal edges were significantly bent on both sides, meaning that the mesh screen was ineffective for it's purpose, and i could not have left the window open, as insects of a fairly significant size could have gotten in. There is no microwave. The basin in the bathroom is of a strange design, and is very shallow, with the water spigot coming down quite low, and it causes a lot of splashing. There's also nothing to each side of the basin on which to put cosmetic bag, toiletries or anything. It's just a standalone basin, not even a closet underneath. There was a slim shelf above the toilet, or the actual back of the toilet cistern itself. Very poorly designed. Ladies need somewhere to put their makeup bag, and their toiletries, and that's just for the woman, if there's also a significant other, you're kinda scrambling. It needs attention, I really want better facilities at this price. The breakfast area is pleasant enough, and there were wrapped and pre-assembled breakfast burritos, home fries, and scrambled eggs, yogurt, fruit, and some kind of chia/tapioca looking parfait in a glass. The burrito was very nice actually. I enjoyed the fact that it was quiet (our previous hotel was super loud, chaotic and very busy, you could not have a conversation) It also has a pretty good Chinese Restaurant, directly across the street from it, with excellent prices and portion sizes,if you arrive at dinnertime as we did. There were a few food options in the small strip mall, as well as a food truck. It's not too far a drive to the interesting areas downtown. Not a bad hotel, but improvements could be made. read more

Although the hotel is officially rated as a three-star property, it definitely deserves a four-star rating. The facility is exceptionally clean and well-maintained, and the staff truly goes above and beyond. The complimentary breakfast was outstanding - with a variety of options such as porridge, omelette, burrito, cereals, juices, milk, baguettes with Philadelphia cheese, yogurts, and a selection of fruits, which my children absolutely loved. Our room was very spacious with comfortable beds and pillows, and we appreciated the free parking available on site. Due to an unforeseen situation--my husband falling ill--we had to check out one day earlier. The kind lady at the front desk assisted us with canceling the second night's booking and was extremely accommodating. Overall a good hotel esp for the price, but can be noisy depending on your room. I was pleasantly surprised to find a room at the price point I did and this was walking distance from the main Alvarado street, about 15 min walk to the pier as well. The front desk and overall every staff was extremely friendly and upon checkin they mentioned our deluxe room got upgraded to one with a fireplace which was perfect as we were visiting in winter. Checkout also wasn't until noon which I was surprised by as most places make you check out much earlier. However the issue we had was the noise. We were in the first floor and I wish I had requested anything but that, as the guests upstairs were loud and had people coming in and out until past midnight. You can hear the knocking on the door, the slamming of doors, the running up and down stairs, stomping, and even their actual convos when they're loud enough. I had to take sleeping pills the second night because I couldn't sleep with all the noise until late the first. Other than the lowsy noise infrastructure and loud upstairs guests, everything was fine. There are daily complimentary wine per guests and breakfast buffet which is baked into your fees as amenities ($20pp). Housekeeping is upon request. Probably the most bang for your buck in the area and I would stay again but request a room not on first in the future. read more

We loved this hotel as we stayed in their king room with the fireplace. We stayed in one of the rooms that was inside the hotel as there are rooms outside of the main hotel. The room had plenty of space and we had our own private balcony which was nice. The sofa was nice which also had a bed but no sheets. It was nice that the TV could be rotated to where ever you are. Breakfast was one of the best in my opinion where they had different options such as huevos rancheros, burritos, eggs, potatoes, overnight oats, yogurt parfaits, bagels, and fresh juices. They have a large dining room which is nice. They also offer wine happy hour. We did not dine in their restaurant but wish we would have. They also have plenty of parking and what is nice is that they charge a fee but it includes free parking and breakfast. They note it on their website. The reason I did not give them 5 stars is because when we stayed it was raining and due to it the hotel was facing plumbing issues which did not let you shower, use the bathroom, or wash your hands. read more

Last minute booking. On our way to Monterey for a quick getaway didn't expect to stay a night but we packed light just incase we were staying over night. With two littles and our ETA was almost 4pm we decided to just stay the night. While still on the road I made a quick search and found this Hotel to be the closest thing we were looking for amenities wise. It wasn't cheap but it was definitely a cheaper option compared to others around for a last minute booking and it looked nice with good reviews. I called the front desk after booking to confirm they received our reservations. He was nice but spoke so fast, low and he seems like he was in a hurry. I booked directly on their website (it was cheaper than book on a 3rd party site). One room Deluxe 2 queen bed. Free parking, free breakfast, WiFi, a/c, Tv, free breakfast, Noon check out. They also had other nice amenities such as gym, pool/hot tub, guest laundry, a bistro and also a glass of wine during their happy hour (included with the amenity fee). The hotel room was fairly clean, few dirty stains on the wall, carpet could use a shampoo and the a/c could use alittle dusting. The bed were not the most comfortable is was springy and lopsided. The pillows were too soft I need to stack 2 on top to get some kind of support. There was no microwave. The breakfast was decent. Love that this hotel really close the Aquarium/ Pier. Overall a solid 3.5. Would stay again if we're in the area and the price is right. read more

I went on a pretty slow weekday in January. There were maybe 10 cars in the parking lot. Upon check in we were greeted by a young man who condescendingly said "you're only staying 2 nights so room service is upon request" as if Monterey was Hawaii or something lol. Tbf he probably just doesn't have enough training. We went to our room and everything was okay at first until we started noticing little issues: - fireplace wasn't working - ac wasn't working - bathroom fan wasn't working I'd be surprised if that room didn't have mold honestly. When I went to the front desk it turned out that ALL the rooms in the wing I was in didn't have working ac / fans. Man claimed it was (central cooling issues) whatever that means. I spoke to the assistant manager Marquise and explained that my wife has asthma and was having trouble in the room. We typically aren't complainers but in this case it was a health concern so there was no way around it. He handled the situation quickly and got us into another room that didn't have any issues. I appreciate Marquise doing this so quickly because it really changed the perspective of the entire trip and the hotel itself. The low stars are not for the service I received but just the state of the hotel itself. I'm adding an entire star for the breakfast because it was one of the best I've had. The price was fair for the season and I think I got my moneys worth. The location is great and you can easily walk to downtown, Altar Bakery, Alvarado Brewery and the wharf. read more

absolutely do not stay here, it's a scam. there aren't a lot of good options in town, but this place is dirty and is a motel not a hotel. staff was unwelcoming and there were people walking around the parking lot at night with hoods. parking is not covered or monitored. the fireplace is a distraction from the old smell and rusty finishes. they will overcharge you for being in a 'good' area which just means you're next to a couple of neighborhood bars. read more

The people upstairs were animals no consideration fir anyone around loud walking and banging and running I don't understand how much walking and movement people can do in a room. And what are they cleaning or rearranging furniture? I don't get it And the room we were in felt claustrophobic with no view and felt like a basement, and the doors are heavy and loud with a big bang when someone closes it. Friendly customer service, clean and comfortable rooms and a great complimentary breakfast and evening wine service made my stay at Hotel Abrego stand out from other hotels in the area. I booked a two queen room for one night. We were promptly greeted upon arrival and informed about all amenities, as well as the breakfast and nightly wine that is offered in the lounge. Only the main building has an elevator. We were placed in another building so we did have to walk up stairs to our 2nd floor room. It wasn't a big deal to us but if you have a lot of luggage, maybe try to request a room in the main building. The rooms themselves are very clean and comfortable. There was a smaller tv and a fireplace. The fireplace was a little tricky to work and we didn't quite figure it out during our stay. The bathroom was quite spacious and there was also another sink located outside the bathroom for use as well. The property does have a pool and hot tub but the hot tub was out of service when we were there. Pool towels were available for use. I will say the breakfast was a great spread with breakfast sandwiches, eggs, potatoes, biscuits and gravy, bagels, waffles, French toast, oatmeal and chia seed pudding. There is also a lounge area where you can purchase dinner and a full bar. Overall I was impressed with this property and I would for sure return. read more

Booked this stay using points! Took the kids on a short trip with one night here. Cute place right in Monterey. Super close to everything (aquarium, Dennis the Menace Park). Check in is later (4pm) but check out is noon and I like that. Grabbed my complimentary wine at happy hour before heading to the room. Decided for convenience to just eat at the hotel restaurant for dinner. Kids meals are basic. I had the teriyaki skewers and they were delicious. Hubs had the ribs and those were good too. We checked out the spa and pool. Only complaint here is that the pool towels are extremely small!! Smaller than the bathroom towels! Went back to the restaurant for dessert. Really wanted the chocolate cake but they were out. Chef special was turtle cheesecake and it was amazing. So was the chocolate martini. The bartender/restaurant server was awesome. Didn't catch his name but he was so nice. Breakfast was nice. I was surprised how many breakfast burritos they made (and how many were still there close to end time! So much waste). Had eggs, potatoes, cereal, bagels/toast, an assortment of juices, yogurt, and oatmeal. read more

What a lovely stay at Hotel Abrego. My husband and I went on a whim and decided to book a room at this hotel last minute. It was a great decision and I'm glad we had a great trip. The breakfast was delicious. I wish they replenished the food at the peak time of 9am because there wasn't much food at that time. Perhaps they were backed up, because someone came and stocked up the next batch of food around 9:45am. However, by that time, I was pretty much done with my meal. One thing to note is that the walls are thin and you can hear people in the hallways as well as the guests next door. I suggest bringing your earplugs. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. I thought the property was pretty. The pool was huge, the hot tub had strong jets, and the pool furniture was super cute. I recommend this spot and would stay here again. Great family friendly hotel. It was very clean, breakfast was good, pool time with the kids was awesome. I wanted to pop some popcorn for a movie night and went to the lobby asking if I could pop it there and they immediately offered to have one brought to my room at no charge. Very nice hotel. We stay here each time we come to Monterey. Comfortable beds, great customer service at the desk, bfast is tasty and fresh. More importantly the rooms are comfortable and it's conveniently located in the middle of everything. We've started more than half a dozen times and won't start anywhere else. read more

Room was lovely. Comfortable bed, great location. The Bistro Abrego, which they advertise as their restaurant is not really a restaurant. It's their lobby, and the food is not good. Otherwise, everyone was lovely and the hotel is clean and quiet. Just really wish we had ventured out to eat our first night there instead of eating at the hotel. read more

Benefits include: - Nice staff at reception - Great location (convenient to Monterey, Carmel by the sea, Pacific Grove) - Spacious room - Fireplace in the room! (perfect for us as temps were starting to drop) - Firm bed (very hard to find at hotels!) - Complimentary parking - Pool and hot tub - Fitness room (albeit small) We are so happy with Hotel Abrego. This is a lovely hotel near downtown Monterey. My husband and I booked a last minute stay there, and while expensive it was still cheaper than most of nearby hotels (and certainly cheaper than the ones in Carmel). Upon checking in we were given our wine tickets included in the $20 amenity fee. We dropped our items off and headed straight to the bar; driving down on a Friday before long weekend is no fun, and we were eager to decompress from the week. Our bartender Kathleen greeted with us with such warmth I wanted to stay and chat with her forever. We were given a choice between Sauvignon blanc vs Cabernet/Syrah blend; we opted for the latter. She gave us each a very generous pour, almost filled our glasses to the rim. We sat out in the outdoor area for a bit and took our glasses up to our room so we could get ready for our evening out. The next morning we got to check out their free breakfast spread (included in the $20 amenity fee). There were breakfast burritos (veggie vs sausage), steel cut oatmeal, yogurt parfait, cereal, juice, and some pastries. Pretty solid and a good variety. We grabbed our quick bites and left for a nice stroll in old downtown Monterey. Overall the hotel exceeded our expectations! The room was spacious and we slept quite well through the night. There were even clean robes inside the closet (I could never turn down a warm clean bathrobe). Albeit the walls were a bit thin but luckily no major noise issues; even my light sleeper husband slept through without waking up. Location is also great, within walking distance to lots of cute cafes and restaurants in downtown. I would definitely return and check out their rental bikes ($30 for 8 hrs) next time. read more
