This is an older motel down in Pacific Grove. The reason why we stayed here is because my bestie was staying here and we were celebrating her birthday. The room was clean and spacious and they offered a pretty decent continental breakfast.. The floor was vacuumed, but it's that older condensed carpet that made me want to wear socks. We were right next to the area for the breakfast and I was afraid that it would be too noisy, but it wasn't that bad. Beds were okay - no complaints. They have all these indoor garden areas. It's rather... Unique.. It is right by 17 mile drive, and there's a cute little downtown area that I had not explored before so in that way, it was a good location. And it's out of the way of Cannery Row, so once you get past the craziness of Cannery Row, it's just a short drive with less traffic, which is also nice. Overall, it was a decent place to stay, but for $300 a night, we can definitely find something a little bit closer to our style.

Beautiful location! Very nice staff, came here with my mother to just get away for the thanksgiving holiday and staff was very nice, all double bed rooms are on second floor apparently but there are nice elevators, it's a comfortable parking experience where our car feels safe, and there is a inside sauna with pool and hot tub outside. Only reason why it's not a 5/5 is cause the breakfast is a bunch of hardboiled eggs, banana, yogurt cups, some muffins, and bagel with cream cheese out. Nothing really 'prepared' albeit filling ‍.

Hair in the tub

It's old dirty tub doesn't drain toilets run all night and nobodycares here. There's no maid service. The prices we pay for this was too much for this place and I'll never stay here again. This is what Monterey has to offer for resorts not good.

Our stay was very good. Though it was a quick one but fun. Their room is nice and clean. They have free breakfast. Also they have swimming pool. My girls had so much fun with our quick stay. All in all, I recommend this resort for those visiting the area at Pacific Grove.

This is a picture of our bed. Very worn. This is how it looked before we slept on it.

The bed in our room was extremely tired and needed replacement. Also the carpet in the elevator is very dirty and gives you the impression that perhaps the carpet in the room could be harboring pest. It does not feel clean. There are also ants in the bathroom even though we are on the second floor. We have been coming here for many years and are trying our best to be objective.

Outside the Monarch Hotel. Beautiful place highly recommended

Since my mom has passed, we have decided to pass on the tradition and come here with our own little family. We came for three nights for our son's 5th birthday trip and we had an amazing time. We had a spacious cabin (#13) with everything we needed and the beds were very comfy. The ONLY small issue we'd address is that the oven in our place was maybe a bit outdated and I only bring this up because when we used just the oven, the entire stove/unit became so hot to touch that you have to wear a mitt to open it as the door handle, dials, everything become very hot. Other than that, everything was PERFECT and we absolutely love our stay here! It is so quiet and peaceful, everyone is very friendly, and there's so much room to play/relax and enjoy yourself. Also right across from the beach and Asilomar conference grounds. I also want to give a BIG shout out to the girl who works the front desk, and her adorable Pomeranian, O'rion! They were seriously one of the best parts of staying here. Couldn't have been a cooler person to talk to, so down to earth and welcoming, very informative, and we hope to see them again when we return! Kevin, Linda, Kirsten and the seriously adorable Sybil, were all so kind and warm and we hope to visit again soon! :) Video is of our very spacious back patio that went out into the large lawn area.

So with Valentines in mind...check in at 4 but they sent a text saying our room was ready at 11 or so and asked what time might we expect you? My timing was four and that's about when we arrived. It's a bit complicated but the signage was clear and there were a couple of parking spaces right by the check in office. Wow what a place Old Victorian and absolutely beautiful inside. Check in was easy and fun, we could keep our car where it was parked. There were small socializing events, a champagne pour at 5, cookies at 7...Our room was just off the parking area with no stairs to climb. We were also close to the breakfast spot. (starts at 8-10) Our room was well a large bedroom, tall queen size bed, a very large bathroom, with a Great shower (water pressure) and rainfall shower head. Three large windows gave us a good view of the bay, the window shades were thick enough to block out most of the light. The mattress was super comfortable, we slept well. We took an Uber to the old pier and had dinner, it was very quiet in town, perfect. Free breakfast always has me wondering but today this was a very nice breakfast, egg soufflé, hash browns, lots of real fresh fruit, croissants, various breads, oatmeal, various topping and cereal. Hit flavorful coffee, juices, yogurts...good stuff. The stay was pricy for the off season but sometimes ya gotta spend a few bucks too enjoy the finer things in life. Today we're headed up highway One to Capitola and over to San Jose to Santana Row for dinner with the kids, stay tuned. Foodguy-Martin

Let me recite the ways. - It took around 40 minutes for someone to arrive at the front desk to check us in when we arrived in the early afternoon despite several staff sitting a few feet away eating, face down watching videos on their phones. - The rooms hadn't been renovated since the 60s or 70s. And we were staying in a cabin which was supposedly an upgrade. Awful. - The door of our room wouldn't lock and when I asked the afternoon front desk guy to fix it before I had to go out, leaving my two tween kids in the room, he said it would have to wait until the next day when someone else could do it. What?! Whatever implied quality "A Kirkwood Collection" is intended to convey is clearly a bunch of BS. It's a scarlet letter on any property as far as I am concerned. What it actually means is crap service and shitty unsafe rooms. The only way this place has 4.5 stars is if people are paying (or were paid) $50 a night (95% less than during Car Week) or they are insincere reviews. AVOID AT ANY COST.

I waited and waited, and after several minutes of waiting I dinged the bell. Nothing. I finally called the hotel and let it ring for a while, no one answered or came to the lobby where the phone was ringing to answer. I waited longer and tapped the bell again, so I stood there and continued waiting. A young woman finally came to the desk, she was nice enough throughout our interaction, but didn't apologize for leaving me waiting or even ask how long I'd been standing there. This next part is important to keep in mind if you have mobility issues, I asked for a room without stairs, and she said there weren't any. When I booked, the listing said accessible, it wasn't. She said this hotel were converted condos and they all have stairs. We had to go up to two sets of stairs, between my arthritis and the weight of my bags, getting luggage up to the room was a challenge. During check-in, the front desk clerk also instructed me to park right next to the lobby in the handicap spot. She said "it's okay for you to park there, we just have the handicap sign up because we have to, but nobody ever comes to check it." I informed her that's where I was already parked because I have a handicap placard. But her instructing me to park in the only visible accessible spot not knowing I even had a placard really upset me, those spots need to be reserved for those that require them. We were in room 115, which is right above the lobby where breakfast takes place. You can hear the automatic door opening and closing every single time someone entered or exited the lobby making it impossible to sleep in. The room was super clean, I liked that we had two separate bedrooms, and the wet bar with a microwave and fridge were good too. The room also has no AC, just a heater. We had to open the windows to air the room out and there were no locks at the tops of the windows or sliding door to keep it securely cracked while sleeping, so the room was very stuffy. The bed is also super firm and the pillows are a weird small square shape. We did check-out the breakfast and the area was super clean, but their selection wasn't great. Overall our stay was good, but I probably wouldn't pick this property again when there are better options at a similar price point nearby.

I specifically chose Sunset Inn over the Bide-a-Wee Inn next door because Sunset Inn advertised that their "cottages" (which are not cottages at all - they are just motel rooms) each come with a patio or balcony. I spent $100 more specifically to have this feature, only to arrive and find out that their version of a "patio" is just 2 chairs on the stoop/sidewalk next to the front door, facing the driveway/parking lot or the unit directly across from you. Zero view, zero privacy, zero tranquility, in a tiny area of about 10 square feet. That it NOT a patio, and I feel scammed. The room itself was clean, but not comfortable. The bed has a cheap, springy mattress; cheap, uncomfortable pillows; and no air conditioning or way to control the temperature in the room (there is a thermostat on the wall, but completely disabled. There is a fake fireplace, but no discernable way to cool down the room, which was quite muggy and stuffy.) The walls are thin and you can hear noise from the parking lot comin through the windows, and the coffee creamer is so old that it had caked together into a wafer instead of power. The breakfast area in the morning was cramped and disappointing. There is no suitable spread to put on the stale bread or muffins on offer (no cream cheese... not even butter! Just nasty margarine, which tells you how cheap Sunset Inn is, and how much they cut corners. At the Bide-a-Wee next door, they had butter, cream cheese, and even had hardboiled eggs for protein - and it costs half the price of this place!) And then there's the poor customer service. This expensive 2-star motel won't let you cancel (even with more than 24 hours notice) after booking a cancellable room. My wife fell ill and could no longer come down with me, so now I am stuck with a 3 hour drive and a $290 bill (extremely high for a one night stay!) all just to stay by myself at this motel since I don't want the money to go to waste. We called about 30 hours before our reservation (early morning on February 14 for a stay the night of the 15th), and they would not allow us to cancel. Instead, he offered credit for a stay, but only on a weeknight during off-season (November, December, or January)... my wife and I can't take time off to do a weeknight stay, and it's preposterous that this is the only credit that would be offered when I spent nearly $300 PER NIGHT at this sub-par establishment. Pacific Grove is a place we have frequented many times over the years, and we were hoping to find a new establishment to make our "home" whenever we visit, but it definitely won't be Sunset Inn. It's one of the 2 worst lodging experiences I've ever encountered in 20 years of coming to the area.

It is strange that they use cloth shower curtains, so every time you take a shower they get soaked. Some toiletries are provided, but not as many as they used to. They used to give lotion, shower caps, shower gel, etc. Now it's just bar of soap, shampoo and conditioner. The bathroom is nice, though, with double sinks. Sofa bed worked out great for our 8 year old. She said it was comfortable, and we were also comfortable in the king size bed, which had a firm mattress. It can get noisy in the room with the balcony door open due to the seals and seagulls, but closing the door blocks most of the sound. We kept it open in the day and shut it when we went to bed. Breakfast - well, I guess you can't really complain too much when it's complimentary with the room, but it's really nothing to write home about. Hard boiled eggs, fruit plate, yogurt, and some muffins. Me, being a diabetic, I couldn't really eat any of it, except the eggs. Our daughter enjoyed it, though she is pretty easygoing. We had been hoping to save some money by eating breakfast at the hotel but we ended up eating breakfast out every day we were there. The hotel gets one star for its location. The balcony view of the beach is genuinely beautiful. That's where the positives end. I booked a suite during a multi-city road trip. Before arriving, I called about early check-in and, when that wasn't possible, asked if I could store my luggage securely. Manager Stacie assured me I could. However, when I arrived, front desk staff told me to leave my bags in my rental car, despite explaining that the trunk didn't lock. Michelle eventually told me to leave them behind a couch in the public lobby. I repeatedly asked for somewhere secure and was met with dismissive comments about how safe Monterey is. I ended up taking my luggage with me and abandoning my plans. Check-in was equally frustrating. I'd already completed the paperwork online but was asked to fill it out again. After being assured I'd have my room by 4 p.m. for a work commitment, I arrived to find Michelle alone at the desk. I waited about 10 minutes while she attended to another couple. When she finally helped me, she was curt and passive-aggressive, moving slowly despite my explaining that I needed to work. When I asked about breakfast, she replied, "Well, you said you were in a hurry." Explaining the amenities would have taken seconds. Then there's the room itself: the room was CRAWLING WITH ANTS. I woke up with ants on me and bites on my arm. A week later, I still had welts. At checkout, the employee initially claimed not to know about the ants. When I mentioned the multiple reports that I'd found on Yelp, he said they spray but the ants come back. Stacie gave me essentially the same response: "It's California. We spray, and they come back." No meaningful solution, just excuses. Pest problems can happen, but guests shouldn't have to pay premium rates to wake up covered in bites. Other issues: no AC, a musty smell, a worn-out fan with barely any airflow, a painfully slow elevator, and an invoice promised by email that never arrived. The location is lovely, but it doesn't excuse the conditions or the service. Michelle was consistently rude, the other employee was dismissive, and Stacie's handling of my complaints was deeply disappointing and frankly unacceptable. I spent over $1,000 on a stay that left me frustrated, uncomfortable, and feeling unwelcome. Monterey has plenty of other hotels at similar prices. I wish I'd done more research before booking. Read the reviews carefully before spending your money here.
