As a dedicated bagel enthusiast, I went all in and snagged a half-dozen assortment to mix things up during the week. This was on my radar screen since hearing about it via Capitol Hill Times and Sea Wolf e-newsletter end of 2021. I finally made my way to Oxbow's Montlake neighborhood location, next door to Cafe Lago (6/10/22). It was a bit dicey with the proximate road construction projects that morning. I was able to find a parking spot up around a hillside street. It was only 11am and I was greeted with a sign and near empty pastry and refrigerated cases. A bit disappointing to have a new destination devoid of bagels and other baked goods. To make my drive from Shoreline worthwhile due to traffic and cost of gas, I bought two cookies (oatmeal raisin and snickerdoodle) plus a 12 oz mocha with tax/tip came to a little over $14. The indoor seating area was not open to public, just employees at the time. The only area available was the stand up counter facing the street and sidewalk. Yay, let's stare at road construction. There was a stream of walk-in customers after me, albeit briefly inside, then departing after seeing not much available for purchase. Later at home, the cookies were okay, but not standouts. Props to the barista who took great effort to craft a decent mocha after I answered her initial inquiries. Note - I cannot comment on non-existent bagels and viennoiserie. Seattle is clearly having a bagel moment with a plethora of indies to choose from, including Oxbow. I'll just stick with Sea Wolf Bakers for my viennoiserie/boulangerie needs and Zylberschtein's for bagels. read more

I was craving a bagel and really wanted to love this place! Easy way to order at the counter and service was nice. The price of a toasted bagel with cream cheese was pretty pricey. Over $6 for a bagel?! Where am I, what year is it, why so expensive?! Why is cream cheese so expensive?! Anyways, I got over paying a small bagel fortune but sadly the bagel was so hard on the outside and I didn't care for the amount of caraway seeds on the top. Saaaaad! This review is for bagels only Growing up in the northeast and eating NY/NJ bagels almost daily, I know what a good bagel is. Unfortunately, these bagels are not good and pretty disappointing for such a great bakery. For the price, they are quite small and underwhelming. They are also very dense. I tried having one without toasting it first and my jaw was sore from how dense the inside is and how tough the crust is. Toasting makes it a bit easier to eat, but it's still not as soft or chewy as I prefer them to be. Do not get these bagels with the expectation that they'll be similar to NY bagels. read more

The line was long for food but there is a separate line if you're just ordering drinks that was moving quickly! This is a cool space in an area without that many other food spots in the same area, with a bakery and coffee. We came for the bagels but tried an assortment of things. Everyone working there was helpful and friendly, and they have a policy where they don't take tips because everything is priced appropriately to pay their workers a fair wage. The latte was solid. Bagels were decent, especially for Seattle, but the cream cheese was spectacular - especially the sun dried tomato one. Oxbow has a nice space in Montlake, near the library -- a modern concrete-forward vibe. We were expecting good things based on our prior experience with Sea Wolf bakery baguettes, but were a little disappointed. The bagels themselves were good -- fresh and chewy -- good the day of or frozen, but going stale quickly enough to make them tough for a second day. That's fine -- but, caveat emptor -- don't expect to keep them around unfrozen for a couple of days before eating. The sesame bagels had so many sesame seeds -- I wish more of them stuck to the bagels, but they ended up everywhere. At $2 per bagel (no discount for a dozen), they're a tad pricey, but they're good, so no problem. The baguette, a Sea Wolf standard, was good, and at $5, reasonably priced. But why my focus on price? Because Oxbow was super-pricey. The scone we got was $6, and the pecan roll $6.50. Both were good, but that's too much. And then there's the 8-oz container of smoked salmon schmear - mostly cream cheese, with some salmon but little flavor --- but it was $12.00! That's obscenely expensive for what you get. I'm all for paying employees a living wage and no tipping, but the prices for the schmear, the scone and the pecan roll were just too much. I won't be making that mistake again. Oh, and one more thing -- the labor situation there is odd -- the employees are attentive, but the division of labor means somewhat poor customer service. I had one woman take my order and payment, another bagged the order. She didn't read the slip carefully and missed an item. As I was walking out the door, I was looking for the missing scone -- I had to go back and ask for it. All this while they weren't particularly busy. That's the kind of miss that can happen fairly easily, but by divvying up the work between two people, the error became far more likely to occur. I expect a place that charges these kinds of prices to have top-notch service -- and was disappointed that they didn't pull it off. read more

I have mixed feelings about Oxbow... The Good: Absolutely LOVED the different cream cheese flavors. I still think about the sun-dried tomato one I got. The coffee was also very good! Ordered six bagels and the roasted jalapeño cream cheese to consume at home. Though I've only ripped into the garlic bagel with the cream cheese, I can say eating it the same day is the way to go. I'm a frequent visitor to Sea Wolf, Oxbow's sister bakery in Wallingford. When I read that the owners had not only started making bagels in Montlake, but made pizza after noon (one whote pie and one red pie each day) I had to come in and give it a try. I ran over from my home in Greenlake (literally, I put on my running shoes and did a nice one way run and rented a gig car to drive home) and got two slices: one red and one white. The red has pancetta and some sort of squash which was good but not my favorite. The white had potato and anchovy and was astounding. Crust on both slices was remarkably flavorful and crispy with brilliant blistering. And at three bucks a slice it is incredible value. read more

I do not understand a bagel shop that does not serve salmon lox? Better yet, house made Gravlax seasoned with citrus in the winter and in summer with dill. Are we not in the Northwest where wild salmon can be procured practically yearound? And I also agree with Nancy M. that their customer service (i.e. hospitality), at Oxbow and their SeaWolf location, is certainly lackluster. I know that these business work hard but, they also benefit massively from the support of their customers who pay a premium for the offerings at Oxbow and SeaWolf. How about expressing a little gratitude in the way you deal with customers because, I'm not sure if there is anywhere else in the world where people willingly pay $12.00 for loaf of sourdough! Reviewing the bagel only. I got a couple bagels to-go only 3 hours after they opened, and the bagels already felt firm in a way that felt very much like they were nearly day-old. They were tough to bite into, and there was almost no chewiness to the bread inside at all. I'd had these bagels before from the Oxbow stand at the Capitol Hill Farmer's Market (Tuesdays at 3pm during the summer), and had a similar take on them (except those were even harder), but I'd wondered if maybe those were actually day-old bagels or something. But, it seems like either these just come out of the oven like this, or whatever process they use just leads to them going through an accelerating aging process to reach day-old state in only a couple hours. Normally I wouldn't care as much about this either, but these bagels were $3.45 each just as an to-go bagel without a schmear, which is the most I've ever paid for a bagel like that and it is definitely not justified--they aren't even like, particularly big nor do they have a bunch of unique flavor options. I'm sure they taste fine toasted, but you can say the same about almost any bagel--at that point you can just go to the grocery store and grab a bag of bagels and save a chunk of money. Which, even if you aren't toasting them, I think is a way better option than ever getting a bagel here. read more

We were pretty excited to visit to check out their bagels...but we were underwhelmed by the bagels and our experience, in general. We came around noon and there were still plenty of bagels to choose from. We had garlic with Calabrian chili cream cheese and a salt with scallion cream cheese. The bagels were cold and not toasted. They were SO very tough -- my jaw is still sore from all the chewing! The flavors were fine - but definitely did not warrant the price tag ($15 for 2 bagels and a biscotti). This place is so cute! I loved the modern, casual vibe inside. You order your food at the counter and pick up your drinks at the other. For about $5, you can get a bagel and cream cheese. If one is interested in checking out this place, now is the time as in my opinion it's unlikely to survive. The space feels overly large, with an uninviting ambience. If one feels compelled to stick around, they have cold metal chairs for customers. Even the sign in front is off-putting, purposefully positioned so that passersby will not notice it. The staff seem to be almost trained to avoid eye contact with customers. On the day the Seattle Times voted Oxbow in the top 3 "best" new places for pizza in Seattle, I decided to check it out. They had one option, an unexciting eggplant pizza with a wheat crust...maybe the owner is close friends with the food writer at the Times? On the positive side, they have Sea Wolf pastries in the morning; however one can get those elsewhere at more welcoming businesses. read more

From a customers point of view Oxbow did not open without hiccups. It felt rushed, and so I can't say it was what I love at first sight. However, we are so excited to have it in the neighborhood! The pizza is really delicious and a pretty good deal. Bagels are solid, and the cream cheese are fantastic. What I think is most underrated is the tuna sandwich. Because their model is using a whole grain flour, many of the pastries are a little too heavy. Would love to see more variety of pastries and more rotation of them. The food is great every time no complaints about that! Pecan rolls and the lemon scones are my absolute favorite! Sadly the customer service isn't there. I had brought my cousin to visit, he ran in to grab what he wanted and came out in a bad mood because he said the person that helped him was in a very bad mood. Threw his change down on the counter at him went in the back and grabbed the tongs needed to get the pastry and threw them aggressively in the bagel bin.
