Loved everything about this place. Over Yonder is a fantastic find in the area with food that is out of this world and an ambiance that will make even the most critical head over heels. We drove in from Beech Mountain and it was stunning to say the least. The serine countryside made for a relaxing drive and it had me reminiscing of simpler times. The restaurant is set on the side of a hill and is absolutely breathtaking. They've clearly paid attention to detail as both the inside and outside are pristine. Once inside, there are multiple rooms of seating. Each are unique and eloquently designed. We sat in one of the back rooms that was lined with original brick. Stunning! I ended up ordering the pork burger with chips. The burger came topped with a coke slaw and pickle. The bun was lightly buttered and really pulled the whole thing together. I'll definitely be ordering it again! My wife got a salad and was very complimentary. This could be one of the most memorable meals I've ever had! We WILL be back! read more

My parents, boyfriend, and I ate here last night and thoroughly enjoyed our experience! Without making a reservation we were pleased to promptly receive a table on the beautiful front deck. I ate the pork burger on gluten free bun, and let me tell you, it was the best burger I have ever eaten (It reminded me very much of a pulled pork sandwich. The gf bun was also delicious). The four of us also split the cornbread skillet which made a perfect appetizer. I would especially like to point out how friendly and professional the server and hostess were. This was honestly one of the most enjoyable dining experiences I have ever had, not only because the food was superb, but the staff made my family feel very welcomed. This is a magical gem hidden away in one of the most picturesque spots in North Carolina . This is a converted house and we are outdoors . The food was fabulous - the shrimp and grits to die for. Their rainbow trout pate was fresh and smooth . Their peach cobbler rivaled anything Texas can produce . Please go- hope the pictures speak to you. This is one of my new favorite restaurants in the High Country. Traditional Appalachian fare with a touch of Louisiana Creole in a charming, historic house. We had the burger, trout dip, frog legs, roasted okra and collard gumbo and everything was fantastic. There will usually be a crowd, so call ahead or be prepared to wait. First time here and was so pleased we gave it a try! Started out with drinks as we sat outside on the porch area. I had the Jump in Line that was refreshing and reminded me of summer. My husband had the old fashion and thought it was the best one he ever had. Dinner quickly came - I had the shrimp and grits- yum!! Husband had the trout that also came with a side of grits. Then, even though we were both stuffed with pure goodness, we couldn't resist and ordered the chess pie. Good gracious, that so good!! The food and drinks are always outstanding and we've had great service each time as well. They have adapted well to the current environment and the restaurant feels very clean, safe, and socially distanced. We did make a reservation and I would probably recommend that. Only thing I would change is they took their loaded potato chips off the appetizer menu but are still offering it as a side? Awful. We've been going here since 2014. Menu has been changed and the food was bland and just terrible. I had the vegetarian plate and it was a lump of bland mashed sweet potatoes and my friend had the trout which was average with the grits cold and undercooked. Check was brought without asking while we were in the middle of a mediocre dessert. The table next to us ordered the meatloaf and it was burnt and the waitress never came back to check on their food so they took it off their check. They said their mashed potatoes were cold and their cocktail was terrible. Unfortunately we will never return. Something has definitely changed for the worse. read more

During my most recent visit to the Boone area, lunch at Over Yonder was definitely my favorite meal. To have such a great restaurant in a more secluded Valle Crucis area is not easy, but Over Yonder delivered on all fronts. I ordered the Bamb Burger with a side of chips. The burger consisted of ground beef and lamb, and was perfectly cooked. The lamb flavor was present, but not overbearing, and added just enough to make the burger taste that much better. There was tomato, onions, cheese, and a collard green mayo atop the meat, and it all came together perfectly. The mayo was an excellent touch - not too creamy or heavy, and with great flavor. The chips were made from scratch in-house, and had a nice crispy-yet-soft texture to it that can't be found in pre-made chips. I'd definitely recommend the dish for any burger / lamb lovers. My wife ordered the Emaline Salad, which had greens, almonds, raisins, red onion, apples, and goat cheese, with a mustard vinaigrette that she requested to be put on the side. She enjoyed her salad, and the few bites I had were also quite tasty. We came on a weekend for lunch, and the place was populated, but not busy enough that we had to wait for a table, thankfully. The service was great, fast, and attentive - they answered the many questions we had about the menu and our food came out soon after we ordered it. I appreciated that the restaurant was on the ground floor of a converted / renovated historic house, which made the place seem much more homey and welcoming. Great food, good service, nice atmosphere, and an owner/chef who is a good person. Wish we lived closer so we could come more often. I had an amazing meatloaf that was grilled to add some crunch. Butterbeans were sooo good. My husband had the specialty chicken fried chicken that was smothered in a delicious gravy yet still managed to maintain its crispness. If you've never had buttermilk ice cream, try it - its an interesting yet subtle twist on vanilla. The owner/chef, Andy Long, took the time to return a baseball cap with sentimental value that my husband left behind. We are so grateful for his kindness. Over Yonder is the best restaurant I've been to in the NC high country. The setting is very quaint/historical in a old house converted restaurant. The drink menu is unique using lots of local moonshine which is really tasty. The fried okra is the best thing on the menu and we get two orders sometimes. They always have specials which the chef creates with his New Orleans cooking background. I had some gumbo with local vegetables and sausage which rivaled most gumbo I've had in New Orleans. Other items which we love include the meatloaf and trout. Service is great, it's kid friendly, and have a cute market/shop nearby. What more can I say. We don't visit NC without a meal or two at Over Yonder. read more

I've been wanting to eat here for quite some time and decided to treat myself for Mother's Day and paid them a visit. I had my heart set to try the Fried Okra appetizer but they were out so was disappointed that it was not an option. I had read prior reviews about the Chicken Fried Chicken being a winner so I an opted for that with a HLT Salad for my dinner. Sadly, my chicken was not even a full piece of chicken and what little I got was overcooked and dry. The salad itself seemed to be missing ingredients and the buttermilk dressing was flavorless. The croutons was the best part of my meal. For $24, I thought it was way overpriced for a tiny piece of chicken and lettuce. My husband had the NC trout and it was divine, perfectly cooked and was a good size portion. Although he was suppose the get the Napa slaw with his meal, it went unnoticed until later but he was still extremely happy with his food... me, not so much. Service was great although a tad slow but we were in no hurry so it was a nice relaxed dinner. Loved the location. I will try them again and will order something different and hopefully they will have the fried okra on my return and my experience will be better than my first. read more

Because I have only one complaint, I'll name it first. They should indicate what size/pour of beer each available listing is. I was anticipating a pint, but got a can. Pretty disappointing. I re-checked and they didn't give information about each beer pour -- one or two said "tall boy", but that was it. So one would normally expect a pint if cans or bottles aren't listed as such. Never mind, it pales in comparison to the good parts. Beautiful geography, a beautiful old house, tasteful decoration, helpful staff, and, to top it all, INCREDIBLE food! The crispy okra was a fantastic appetizer. My wife and I also had chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and collard greens, pork chop collar with soup beans and collards. For dessert, the butterscotch banana pudding and chocolate chess pie. It was one of the best meals we've ever had and we were on our anniversary trip, so we ate every bite. It was one of those times when one eats way too much but doesn't regret it because it was so damn good. I'll be back the next time I'm in the High Country! read more

Top notch southern fare located in the heart of beautiful Valle Crucis. Have only been for lunch but loved the space and the ingredient-driven menu. Most of the food is just standard southern staples but it's all really well executed. Over a few visits we've had the trout spread (fantastic), the crispy okra (amazing), the grit skillet (sort of a one note cheese fest), the BLT salad (also fantastic if a bit too much bacon), the tomato cobbler (really good, basically the same as eastern NC tomato pie) and the fried trout (super fresh and perfectly fried). Would recommend all of it as well as a nice stroll around the Mast General Store to follow the meal. Face it -- Valle Crucis is one of the prettiest places in NC and it's wonderful to have such a good restaurant in it. read more

My husband chose to go here for his 40th birthday. We started with the roasted okra that was recommended by many, it was delicious! Our server was helpful when it came to ordering drinks and dinner. I can recommend the chicken fried chicken, normally this dish has a thick breading, but not at Over Yonder! Its lightly breaded with lots of flavor. Also, the gumbo was really good. Her name was Sydney and she was amazing. She was so kind and had great patience and really took the time to answer all of my family's questions. She recommended the fried okra and peach cobbler and let me tell you, my mouth was watering, my toes were tingling, I was amazed. This food was amazing.
