I 100% agree with the host of other Yelpers that have said ... "best BBQ in Texas". This is a cut above, without question. Why? Abundant parking. Nice airy, roomy dining room. Standard Texas BBQ joint set up - order your meats and sides, then go sit and wait to be called, to pick up your feast. Let's start with the product: brisket, chicken, pork ribs ... cooked to perfection. Flawless smoke rings, pristine bark, the flavors of the beef, chicken and pork coming through, because all they use is salt and pepper to season. So rare to find BBQ that is not overwhelmingly salty, or smoky to the point of tasting and smelling like mud. Texas bbq sauces - reg, spicy and a white sauce that looks and sounds odd, but works. But some items are next level. The bacon burnt ends and the beef ribs ... amazing meat ambrosia that represents absolute pit mastery of cooking technique and flavoring. The sides: gouda mac and cheese, coleslaw, green beans - so fresh, so balanced - so well done. And ... loaves of homemade baked bread? I have been to as many bbq spots as I can, in the four years I've been here ... but Chef Dwight and Outpost 36 blow them all into the weeds. We ordered takeout from this place, and overall I enjoyed it. The onion rings I ordered were nice and had a good crunch. I tried the burnt ends since I've never had it before. It had a good flavor, though I wasn't a huge fan of its texture. That being said, I'd still recommend it. I did like the food here, though I would've liked to have BBQ sauce on the side. For whatever reason, our order didn't include anyway, and utensils would have been nice too. But this place has great food overall. read more

I'm going to be harder on Outpost because of the level that BBQ has reached in DFW and also the high quality of Horizon 76. Horizon has some very creative and well executed entrees, appetizers, etc. I was hoping that Outpost would have taken the opportunity to be different. Unfortunately what was created was a step above Spring Creek, but not close to matching Heim, Hurtado, Meat U Anywhere, and others. The positives: The ribs were good but not great. I can't tell how fresh they were, but since the membrane wasn't removed, they don't just fall off the bone. The Mac was creamy and rich. The armadillo egg tasted good, but the filling is a lot of cream cheese and I can't believe the price for just one. The counter workers were very kind, but it is hard to figure out what to do with your trays. The negatives: The brisket was very bland with virtually no bark. The pulled pork didn't seem fresh and again, no bark or evidence of smoke. It isn't priced as high as your high end bbq places, but I believe I'd rather pay the extra money for quality bbq. Unfortunately I likely won't go back. I have to agree with other reviews.....all the food is extremely salty. We got pulled pork, chopped brisket and the jalapeño sausage. The sausage was out of this world! Their pickled jalapeños were crunchy...so good. I didn't care for their sauces. I tasted cumin and chili powder....it just didn't work for me. So the 4 stars is just for sausage. Wasn't sure what to expect from a new BBQ place but took a chance. Very glad I did. Staff was very friendly and helpful. My take on the food: 1. Sliced brisket lean- surprisingly juicy and flavorful. Some of the best I've had. Only issue for me, was the large amount of pepper on the meat. That said, I knocked off some of the peppercorns and all was good. 2. Turkey- also very juicy. Over the years, I stopped getting poultry from BBQ joints as it's typically dry. (Technically this time my friend got it and shared it with me) 3. Jalapeño cheese sausage- delicious. Not a tremendous amount of heat. Good flavor. 4. I had a burnt end sample and it was fantastic. 5. Mac and cheese - very good but not the best I've had. 6. Bread (yes, bread) - it's baked fresh in-house and very good. A nice surprise. 7. BBQ sauce- I picked some up before we started eating. Although I didn't need it (thankfully), it was really good. Just the right amount of tang and sweetness. Not overpowering . I hope this helps. To the proprietors, please don't do like other BBQ restaurants over time and start cutting corners. They want to make sure you are happy with your meal! Ordered the tenderloin and it was perfect for me, but a little rare for my wife's taste. When I went back to order some brisket for my wife, they cooked up some tenderloin for my wife by throwing it on the flat top with a little butter. Was mouth watering and my wife absolutely loved it. Went on Sat and had the turkey and filet with Mac and fries. Food was outstanding! But what made the experience superb was the customer service the co-owner showed by greeting and chatting us up but then giving a tour of the smokers plus the story on the white sauce. Today we tried their Weekend Brunch. WOW the breakfast potatoes were so good. I had the Lumberjack tray and hubby had the Biscuit Bomb and Breakfast Taco. The Biscuit Bomb had a choice of meat - either Brisket, Sausage, Chorizo or Bacon. He of course opted for the Brisket. The eggs were so fluffy. Definitely Real eggs. Service was outstanding. Went in to check it out after seeing a great article about this joint and was lucky enough to meet the owner (Dwight- super cool dude!) We told him we wanted to try everything and he had his folks build us a sampler plater with literally a couple bites of everything on the menu! 4 Stars for all. The barbecue is great, not too smokey because he uses post oak but it melts in your mouth. The sides are equally impressive and the banana pudding is in a league of its own. The brisket was mushy, like it had been left in a sous vide for too long. Flavor was just ok. Certainly didn't knock my socks off. Had BBQ here before and it was okay. Nothing to write home about. Decided to stop in for a burger since the manager recommended it last time. What a sloppy mess and by far a burger. The meat did not hold together. Sorta bland. Not sure about the cheese as it was stringy by did not help keep the burger together. The biggest disappointment was the bottom bun. Soggy. I could not eat it. After this experience I absolutely refuse to eat here or next door ever again. Same owner same (not so) quality food. Oh the bourbon glaze was some sorta bourbon soaked meat. Ordered the brisket sandwich and onion rings. The brisket was dry and had no bark to it. Would rate the brisket sandwhich average compared to other bbq restaurants in the area. The onion rings were also very average and nothing special. Would be nice if you can order at your table and the food wasn't served in styrofoam cups. Had high hopes Outpost 36 would provide exceptional craft bbq in Keller especially due to the excellent Horizon 76, but was disappointed. The service was very friendly, the restaurant was pretty big they had a bar area. Definitely recommend going, you for sure get your moneys worth with the portion sizes. I got the Texas Trinity; Brisket, Ribs, Sausage, Elote bowl, and fry's(2 sides) Cherry Pie, and Banana Pudding. Ribs: 8/10 slid off the bone, wish it had a bit more meat but the taste was great! Brisket: 9/10 had a little fat and they gave me an end piece but other than that it was delicious. Mild Sausage: 10/10 I'm not really a sausage person but I did try it, the flavor and portion size was great! Shoestring fry's:10/10 weren't too salty or not salty enough they were perfect! Elote bowl: 4/10 the corn tasted a bit undercooked and it didn't rlly have alot of flavor, it was also really liquidy. Between them being out of everything that we were interested in trying and listening to the owner talk very loudly about personal business matters to the boy next to us, we were incredibly disappointed! After we sat down, my son noticed BBQ pizza, he got excited! We ordered 2, 2 meat plates with a mixture of sides and meats and the BBQ pizza for him. About five minutes later we were told they're out of some of the sides and they no longer serve barbecue Pizza. My son was disappointed but decided to try the nuggets with mac & cheese; placed that order and about five minutes later we were advised there's no mac & cheese, so we changed it to fries for him and beans for us. No sauce needed for any of h to e meats. The green beans were awesome. The baked potato was huge. The fried okra is out of this world, the in-house made jalapeño sausage is the best this Texan has ever had, and the shrimp and grits made with butter and smoked Gouda cheese made a grits-lover outta me! I've been several times and can honestly say that Outpost 36 delivers some strong BBQ with excellent sides. I've been twice in the last 2 weeks and had the opportunity to try several things. When you walk in, it is standard Texas bbq style counter service. They are quick and very helpful if you have questions about any of the menu items. The first time I went I ordered the 2 meat platter, with brisket, turkey, french fries and macaroni and cheese. All were very, very good. The brisket was very good, but the highlight was the smoked turkey. Probably some of the best in the metroplex. Hands down. The brisket was moist and had a solid smoke and salt and pepper taste. Very nice. Hand cut fries cooked to perfection and the mac and cheese was legit. Didn't try the bbq sauce as good bbq doesn't need sauce!!!! Went back the following week and had the brisket chili burger. I thought this was ok. I really didn't care for the chili, but admittedly, I'm very particular about chili. Scraped the chili off and enjoyed the rest of the burger! Problem solved. Burgers don't come with any sides, so I had to go back and order a side of their tasty fries. The only thing that I wish would be better, is that if you want a beer or mixed drink , you have to go to the bar and order it separately. They make a mean old fashioned if you are into that. I wish they would get the schooner/fishbowl style beer glasses like they have at Railhead BBQ. Love having an icy cold beer in those forty glasses. Definitely check this place out.
