I recently ate at Outpost 36 when they catered a party. I was a little irritated because they had a person there dishing-up our plates of food (meat and sides) and it created a backup in the line and it took much longer than it should have. I suspect it was to budget the meat, but at the end of the meal it looked like probably 30% of the food in the serving dishes was still on the buffet line. Therefore, his budgeting didn't accomplish what was intended. Just created a longer line. read more

Interesting concept now that they've merged their restaurants. Essentially there are three restaurants under the same roof- two of which have the same menu but you get to choose either table service or order and seat yourself service. (The Steak restaurant wasn't open at the time of our visit so I can't review that but it's there!) One of us ordered the half chicken and they said it was amazing! If you are into getting your protein on - then this is your best choice! The Texas twinkies are definitely something to order if you love jalapeños - I'll go back just for these alone... Slight downside for our whole table was the mac and cheese side - seemed to have way too much sour cream added to it for our tastebuds so none of us will be ordering that again. read more

Once again my husband and I are sitting at the bar enjoying a couple of cocktails. My husband got a margarita and he said it is incredible. I order a drink design specifically for the Restaurant. Named old glory! So refreshing! Relaxing atmosphere, good county music playing in the background and an amazing friendly staff. My husband ordered brisket nachos with a side of pork ribs. I've eaten at Outpost 36 many times and have always had an excellent experience. The BBQ is consistently outstanding--you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. My personal favorites are the brisket, the jalapeño and cheese sausage, and the Texas Twinkie. They recently merged with their sister restaurant, Horizon 76 (another favorite of mine), so you can now order several of Horizon's most popular dishes here as well. This location also features a high-end meat market, which we shop at often whenever I'm planning to cook at home. Overall, Outpost 36 is a guaranteed win. Everything is flavorful, satisfying, and expertly prepared. Definitely make it a regular stop on your dining rotation. read more

I was in the Keller area for some meetings and one of the people I was with suggested Outpost 36. It was lunch time, the restaurant is pretty big and yet there were only 3 other tables of people so I wondered how it was going to be... I ordered at the counter. I ordered brisket (moist) and tenderloin. While the brisket was respectable and I'd get it again in a second, the star of this show was the tenderloin. It was amazing. There is a meat market on site too, where you can buy several different cuts of meat to take home and prepare on your own. The staff both in the meat market and the restaurant were great land provided great experience. On a final note, as any great barbecue restaurant does, they have named their smokers. Still delicious from my review a year ago. We went on a Friday night around 6:30pm. There was a little line but it moved quickly and we ordered a couple of drinks while we waited. I recommend the jalapeño margarita! Fresh crushed jalapeños make it even more refreshing. I tried the smokehouse burger and it was cooked to perfection with the bourbon glaze sauce and a crunchy onion ring to top it off. The beef tallow fries are my favorite side. I come here every Thursday night for trivia. The trivia is fantastic! That is about where it ends. In the past couple months they have combined Horizon 76 and Outpost into one restaurant. To say it isn't working, is an understatement! The bar service used to be on point! The bartenders remembered your name, your drink and your tab. Now it is like you are a stranger every time you walk up to the bar. Same questions-what are you having? Do you want to start a tab? (Already have one) What's the name? Oh and Sorry, what do you want to drink? (Asked twice) it has been like that since the bar staff from Horizon replaced Jazzy-additionally it takes forever, even to get a bottle of beer. You order at the counter and they give you a number (new this week) to hang on your table. When your food is ready, wait staff literally wanders around 3 different sections looking for your table. When they deliver your food, they don't take the number -this seems like an obvious thing to do. The food and drinks have all gotten more expensive since the merge also. I used to order WTF (whisky that's frozen). They no longer know how to make the slushie machine the right consistency. The bartender said she will blend with ice -not the same! The machine works but you have to know how to do it. Chef used to come out and ask how we were doing and remembered us. Now there are 2-3 managers that seem desperate for interaction-to seat you, to get you to sit in a certain section, etc.... Very uncomfortable. Trivia has now been banished to the back room which can run hot and there isn't as much room. Will continue to come for trivia but we eat before hand and get a drink if we are lucky. read more

Stolled in with the family last night for dinner. The whole sit down or order at counter is a bit strange. Service was fine. I got a burger and fries. It was really good. Everything was hot and the fries were great. Everyone else got bbq plates and that's where the disappointment began. All the meats were ice cold. Service was strange...just confusing and not very welcoming or straight forward. You don't get seated or a waiter/waitress. Food was dry and lacking in flavor. It needs to be seasoned and rested properly. Unfortunately this was our group of 12's first and last time here. I had the smokehouse burger...it looked amazing but there was no smoke flavor or flavor in general. The owner was great and regularly met with tables to check on quality. That was nice but the food was the biggest issue. Great portions ! Large interior seating area!! Smoked steak was delicious and tender. The fries were not hot but they do like skinny fries at times. Prefer fresh cut with skins on like Sammy's. First time trying this spot, Friday night at 730pm...usually a bad idea for BBQ since they run out of things. Place was fairly packed, appeared most tables were done, just hanging out. Board showed they were out of several items (ribs, chicken, sausage) so I had some concerns about what was left... Attendant advised still had lots of brisket, burnt ends and turkey. I went for the turkey and a side of mac n cheese. Took a seat and waited for buzzer to indicate food was ready to be picked up. It took a little while to prep food, not an issue, just not like most BBQ spots where you leave the counter with your food after paying. Turkey was (still) juicy and had a good smokey flavor. Not over the top smokey, just right honestly. Mac n cheese was excellent. It's thick, but it was very good. I wasn't overly hungry going in, so the turkey was perfect for this visit. Had the trinity and simply couldn't eat it. The ribs were fair but the sausage was so dry the ends were crunchy. I asked for brisket from the point, which I was told was no problem, and it was very dry as well and NOT from the point! The sides were fine and the pinto beans were the only part of the meal I finished. I wound up trashing over 75% of the dinner. The service was fine and I tipped 15% since I was told I would get point brisket that didn't happen. It was a waste of a $35 meal. read more

We had a lot of things to celebrate, and so decided to try the 76 Steakhouse inside Outpost 36. It is in a beautiful room that has an elegant and quiet vibe than the rest of the restaurant, but keeps the awesome Tx vibe. Our server, Daniel took amazing care of us and every suggestion he had was incredible. The food was outstanding and we are quite picky about our steaks. I came here for a private Christmas party and had a wonderful time. Outpost 36 is spacious with an indoor and outdoor section. The staff were warm, inviting and brought out the food/dessert in a timely fashion. The pulled pork and brisket were tender, flavorful and paired well with their spicy barbecue sauce (which isn't spicy in my opinion). The potato salad was savory and mustardy which I like and their homemade bread was yummy. Their Mac and cheese which I found out is smoked with Gouda cheese was delicious. Me and the little woman decided to try this place. Overall friendly staff and nice looking place. We shared a meal of Sausage and Brisket. Unfortunately both meats were cold to the touch and as such had congealed fat on them making it quite nasty. Neither of us cared for the potato salad or coleslaw just wasn't what we were expecting flavor wise. We did mention the meat was cold to the staff but they didn't seem to care or offer to warm it up. Dined in midweek on a Wednesday evening and found that they were busier than I expected, which is great to see. You order at the counter by 1/4 pound increments or 1/3 pound portions for plates. Prices here are comparable to places like Hutchins BBQ, but higher than Hard Eight. Prime Brisket - I ordered a 1/4 pound of the brisket and was able to score some lean and fatty cuts. Meat has a bit of hold, wasn't dry, and did cut easily. Smoke on the meat wasn't overpowering and is honestly a good brisket. Bacon Burnt Ends - I thoroughly enjoyed these bacon burned ends or pork belly with a sweet coating on it. These were absolutely delicious. Kids ate these literally like they were candy. Good fat to meat ratios from what's to be expected from bacon burnt ends. Jalapeno Cheese Sausage - Again, I was pleasantly surprised how good the sausage was. It didn't have a heavy smoke and dryness that I get from some other local BBQ establishments. Solid taste of the cheddar and mild on the jalapeno. Armadillo Egg - Saw this on the menu and had to try it. A bacon and sausage wrapped cheese filled jalapeno. This was delicious and extremely creamy with the amount of cheese stuffed into the pepper. I didn't get a heavy sausage taste to it, but the bacon wrap on it was great. This time was much spicier than I thought it would be... absolutely "dericious". Only drawback for me had to the price given the size of the armadillo egg. I don't believe it was worth $10 for a single egg. Mac-and-Cheese - The mac and cheese here is honestly amazing. Thick and cheesy goodness. It thoroughly coats your mouth, isn't dry, and has a bit of pepper seasoning too it. Coleslaw - Coleslaw is creamy and fresh. Seems to be a theme with a lot of their cheesy and creamy items. They're heavy and thick, and that's good. All in all, the food is great here. Though they were a bit slow on the order. You order from the counter and then have to wait for the food to be prepped before they call out your name for pickup, which took a good 10+ minutes. Fountain drinks were the Real Sugar variety. Plenty of pickles, onions, and BBQ sauce at stations on the each side of the restaurant. Overall a solid 4*s. read more

Outrageous Fatty Rip Off I ordered 1/2 lb of sliced brisket for carry-out. Was asked if I wanted lean or moist. I said moist. I am not fat averse. Marbling is fine. When I got home and opened it to find 3 slices that were considerably more than half solid fat. Large inch plus across slabs of fat. Inedible. See the photo after I removed the solid fat from the 3 slices and see if you consider that marbled fat to accomplish a moist texture. They tossed in two slices of dry stale bread. Plus, seasoning crust was full of course ground pepper. Large grains of pepper chunks that lodge in your teeth. I paid $16 plus tax for that. What an absolutely outrageous rip off. Do you think the owner or staff would have accepted and eaten that? Will not be back. read more

Just to calibrate on stars, 3 stars is a good spot, food is good I place above Spring Creek but there are better BBQ places in the area. Ordered to go on a Saturday when they happen to have beef ribs and we got one- just one because it's $40!!!! It was the most delicious of the meats but too expensive. The brisket and sausage were good, not memorable but tasted fine and I liked the Mac and cheese. The coleslaw is just cabbage- there isn't anything on it and therefore it's shredded cabbage and not coleslaw, do not recommend. I don't know that I'd return to Outpost, if we weren't in TX I'd likely rate it 4 stars but being we have so many BBQ options this isn't ranking above the completion but it's still a good meal. read more
