I've been to restaurants where great service has salvaged a mediocre meal. I've been to restaurants where terrible service has destroyed a great meal. This is the one (and hopefully only) time where a valet experience has damaged a good meal and exceptional service to the point where I will never return.
Ouisie's Table has a very limited parking area, most of which is right in front of the restaurant and coned off so a valet can ply an extra $3 out of every customer. We had 10 people in our group, most of whom were parking at an adjacent retail store next door rather than blowing $3 on obstructed parking. I managed to get one of the half dozen non-valet spots and helped a departing customer navigate a car out so a friend could pull in The valet rushed over in a vehicle and tried to block my friend and take the non-valet spot for a valet car so that he could force more business towards himself, but I was standing in the space. I gestured for him to keep going. He gestured for me to move. He moved the car closer to me. I sat down in the middle of the parking space. He pulled back, rolled down the shotgun seat window, and told me, "This is not your country. You need to move." I smiled at his racist ass and he pulled away and parked his vehicle elsewhere. My friends pulled in, having watched the entire episode.
We decided to go into the restaurant and not let it affect our meal. We were here to enjoy Houston Restaurant Weeks, and nothing was going to interrupt that, not even a jackass of a valet. Our server was Erica, who was off-the-charts amazing. She had incredible attention to detail, utilized the most formal serving techniques I'd seen used anywhere, and even adorably looked a little thrown off when the girls weren't ready to order and she had to take the guys' order first. She was absolutely amazing, and she alone would have salvaged the previous valet moment into about a four-star experience.
The meal itself was solid. For the first course, my girlfriend went with the crab cakes, which were exquisite, but too tiny to be satisfying as a first course. I went with the calamari, which the majority of the table did. We all loved how light it was since it wasn't deep fried. A few opted for the poblano soup. They had nothing good or bad to say about it.
The second course was another mixed bag. I was the sole person to opt for the Branzino, which was lightly broiled and served with salty finger potatoes and broccoli. The fish was a little tough, but the lemon garlic sauce made up for it. The vast majority of our group opted for the beef tenderloin, and I have to give them credit for bringing out 4-5 servers to get all of our entrees delivered at once, and still managing to get all the right cooking levels in the correct seats. I heard nothing but good things about the beef and the butternut squash. Two of our group opted for the vegetarian paella. I took a bite of my girlfriend's and found it too bland for my taste, but she seemed to enjoy it.
Our last course was dessert. The apple strudel a la mode slices were small and topped with a tiny scoop of ice cream, but it was about an appropriate size to finish the meal individually. The passionfruit cheesecake was probably the big winner, with a great balance of jelly tart and creamy sweetness to balance out. Two of our group went with the cup of chocolate, a shot-glass sized dessert full of a rich chocolate ganache. Positive reviews all around.
Things went south when my uncle and brother were leaving and we stopped to speak to a manager (Jeff) about the valet. The valet (Roger with Samir Limousine) saw what we did and seemingly stepped outside to call his boss or whatever to cover his ass. The manager apologized and said he'd take care of it with the valet company owner, and we were ready to leave it at that. Had that been the end of it, this would be a four star review.
I walked back to my table to retrieve my girlfriend while a couple from the table to leave when my uncle and brother stormed back in. The valet had apparently rudely confronted them about complaining about his racist comments. The manager walked out to talk to him and the valet blatantly lied. Standing a good five feet away from the action, we corrected him and pointed out his lie, and get this, the valet threatened to call the police.
We told him to go ahead, and he pulled out his phone and started dialing who knows what (too many digits to be 9-1-1, probably to intimidate us?). The manager intervened, told him to put the phone away, and literally said to him, "you have a job to do, do it and stop being rude to the customers." The valet made a point of saying right to the manager's face that he wasn't rude and he wasn't going to apologize for anything. The manager reiterated that the valet needed to continue doing his job and stop escalating the situation.
We got an apology from the manager, but at this point it's beyond a salvageable situation. read more
