So my fellow Yelp community members have I got a new place for you to checkout...it's Mother's Day Weekend on a Sunday after attending Flagging in the Park at the National A.I.D.S. Grove (a MUST-DO) in Golden Gate Park...my friends suggested Otra in the lower Haight Ashbury district. Parking was a bit difficult to navigate but I eventually found a spot around the corner from the restaurant. I walk into a slightly dimly lit room but find my party right away. The bar is to the right of my table and I sit down and right away order from the menu in order to catch up with my friends. I chose their Spicy Pork Pozole a slow braised pork stew, white hominy, cabbage, and house chips. To wash it down I chose their Watermelon Ginger Agua Fresca it came with a rim dipped in a salt & spicy chili powder that reminded me of a margarita but it was a OTRAS BEBIDAS (non-alcoholic) and later I added their Horchata that was delicious with a sprinkling of nutmeg! My friends ordered their FRIJOLITOS CON CHIPS, DIRTY QUESO, & CHARRED CABBAGE which we shared...light and delicious dining. Other items ordered from the menu included Beef Tacos, Roasted Sweet Potato Tacos, Quesabirria Style Tacos, and my new favorite BAJA Style Fish Tacos (you must order them)...to finish the meal we ordered one of each...their rich and delectable FLAN & a slice of Tres Leche Cake...so rich and sweet but TOTALLY DELICIOUS! The service was friendly and the food was simply delicious! One of my co-workers described stepping into OTRA as teleporting to Tulum and I have to agree (not that I've been to Tulum, you know like vibe-wise I would imagine). It's like you get to go on a mini vacation within SF after work. Anyways they made quick accommodations for a table of 10 hungry co-workers and seated us at a long table in the back. I ordered the most refreshing watermelon ginger aqua Fresca and beef tacos. The beef was tender, slow cooked in a mole based sauce. The service was great too and multiple servers served our table throughout the evening. If you're in the area for a cocktail and light bites, I recommend making a pit stop. read more

Way way way too salty, by the time I took three sips of the Paloma Fresca (NA) and had some totopos I could feel my lips paling from all of the salt!! No se, soy mejicana and when I want tacos... catch at the taco truck paying the same price for five delicious tacos rather than two. I had the tacos dorados de camarones-- the tacos were good but shame on me I had to eat it with a fork and knife because they're heavy and will crumble if you try to pick it up. Was actually pleasantly surprised by the food here, in particular the al pastor taco I ate. The meat was moist, flavorful, and well spiced -- though could've used more of the burnt charcoal-y flavor that I appreciate from a traditional vertical spit cook. On that note it also makes a significant difference seeing them cut the meat for the al pastor from the spit... so like most SF Mexican restaurants I leave missing my LA Mexican food scene. That all said, I did really enjoy my al pastor tacos here. They were quite pricy, but well flavored. Also enjoyed the margarita! Would rec getting a pitcher. The Lower Haight doesn't have the groovy vibe of the Upper Haight, but residents probably prefer not to put flowers in their hair anyway. The Lower Haight has its share of cool-looking eateries and watering holes, and this contemporary Mexican spot definitely seems to be representative of that trend. I was walking, and I impulsively stopped in for a drink and a nosh. The main menu looked intriguing with dishes like Hamachi Collar with Tomatillo Salsa. However, I was just here for Happy Hour, and of the four items offered including aguachile, I was most drawn to the $5 Salsa Macha Deviled Eggs. I got three full-flavored halves with black garlic oil, sesame, chive, and CHiNGONAS peanut salsa macha (Photo 10). They went well with the smooth-to-slightly spiky $14 Chile Espresso Martini (Photo 9). A nice stop with a chill bartender. Well worth returning for a bigger meal...and a bigger drink. Came here on a Thursday during happy hour with two friends and we were able to sit right away outside. Our waitress was very quick with getting our orders and the food came fast. I got the Chicken Tostadas (2 foot $9), which is a great deal in the city. The Chicken Tostadas were small but stacked high and filled me up. Also i loved the chips with black bean sauce, but the spicy sauce that came with it was really good. Charred Cabbage: Surprisingly delicious not as a salad fan - smoky and flavorful. I wanted so badly to give Otra five stars on the merits of the Charred Cabbage alone, but sadly the glacial service was ultimately frustrating enough to impact the experience and dock it a star. I'd like to give the waiters the benefit of the doubt, imagining they're understaffed, but regardless, the service was subpar given the wait times to take our order, deliver our food, bring the check, and take the check. For getting and returning the bill, we actually had to get up and track our server down. Whether it is the incompetence of the specific servers or the negligence of the restaurant is unclear. But now the good stuff: the Charred Cabbage is wonderful, totally worth the hype, and easy to order vegetarian (sans bone marrow). Maybe the bone marrow brings something extra to the table that I'll never know, but omnivores and herbivores should all take note: this dish wants for nothing in its vegetarian version. Even though it's a single flavor throughout, the novelty and ambitiousness of the single cabbage head is part of the fun, and the impeccable flavor never gets old. The char is perfect, although the presentation of the uncut head of cabbage means that it does get less flavorful as you get to the inner core. Also, the restaurant would do well to serve it on a larger plate (or even shallow bowl) so that cutting it is more user-friendly. That said, the cabbage is so good that I'd happily return despite the questionable service. read more

I went to Otra with some friends for happy hour after hearing that they had incredible vegetarian tacos. We had no trouble getting seated in the middle of the week and had the option of sitting outside in their Parklet or inside their super cute restaurant. We ordered some Aguachiles, salsa, and the brussels sprouts off of the happy hour menu and everything was incredible. The portion size was also impressive for a happy hour menu and the price was super reasonable. Having heard so much about their non-meat tacos I decided to try the mushroom tacos and the fish tacos. They both blew me away and were pretty decently sized. The service is also super friendly and quick. I can't believe I hadn't tried this place sooner because it was amazing!! Half way through dinner. I also found out that two of my friends there had eaten there the night before, and loved it so much that they did not suggest going to a new place Overall highly recommend for any non-meat, eaters or pescatarians, who are looking for a cute spot to go out for a date night or happy hour with friends. For starters we had the Frijolitos with beans and corn chips. Nice mild flavor but the Agualiche with corn chips was super spicy. Eat only the fish and chips and it's much tolerable. $14-$18 for 2 tacos? I couldn't decide on the mushroom, cod, or beef tacos. Waitress said those are the 3 top choices and just enumerated the ingredients. I chose the cod tacos. It came in a deep fried battered cod with a heaping serving of lettuce and amazing sauce on corn tacos. Loved it! My companions ordered the Quesabirria tacos , rich and filling. Grilled pork ala pastor, tasty, Carnitas tacos, didn't sample it, and Tuna tostada, too sour. For dessert, we ordered the Tres leches cake and Churros with dipping chocolate for the girls' birthday. First and foremost, I'm an Otra fan. The food is tasty, the drinks are good, and vibe is great. They're good about dietary needs (especially if you're GF or vegetarian). It's definitely on the fancier end of tacos, but the tastes and vibes are worth it for a good night out. Bigger thing is that I happened to go on Tuesday this week, and lo and behold, stumbled upon their amazing Taco Tuesday. Very cheap tacos and cheap margaritas. Your options are meat or veggie, but if you're looking for a cheap meal with good vibes and aren't super picky, go on a Taco Tuesday. Otra is a fantastic spot to meet up with friends. We had reservations, and the staff accommodated our shifting group size with understanding. I quickly sat down as my friends ran 10 minutes late, and I did not have to idle in the corridor. I appreciated being sat down and offered to take my drink order while waiting. We were seated upstairs and pleased to see a ramp allowing accessibility for all patrons. The menu, with its perfectly curated variety of shared bites between friends. It allowed us to sample a more extensive variety of delectable dishes. The drinks were delicious and fun, and the staff was attentive and ensured our drinks flowed. Service was excellent as we grazed slowly and ordered plates continuously. Not being rushed allowed us to catch up and celebrate our friend. Really warm and welcoming service and a mule kick of a great margarita, what's not to like? We enjoyed all the plates especially the pozole Roja and Baja fish tacos, both dishes so flavorful ($18/$16). I thought the prices were a little steep for two small street tacos and also the two chocolate chip cookie dessert. They were both very good - but priced too high ($8 for two cookies?) Buttermilk churros with a dark chocolate sauce were dreamy. Definitely order those to split, delicious. I had been to Otra a long time ago and just went back for their Taco Tuesday and happy hour- what a deal! Their food is incredible, and the taco Tuesday deal we got was this amazing beef taco that was a flour tortilla on the outside with a crispy one inside...and it was quite large, for $3.50 each! The happy hour deals were great too- delicious deviled eggs and $9 margaritas...we had a full meal and several drinks (including this delicious horchata cold brew rum drink, see pic) for about $50 per person, which I feel like is unheard nowadays in sf. The service was impeccable - I ordered the coconut flan and a staff member noticed I may not have been enjoying it 100% so she gently asked me about it- I honestly told her it was just not what I was expecting and it was a little bitter (I think due to the burnt caramel) but I was not offended at all by it...she took it off my bill because it was not 100% satisfied! Came here on a Saturday night and it was packed! We still managed to be seated without having to wait, but I wouldn't count on that. The food was amazing, and very friendly service! Also the portions are quite generous. My friend and I shared the quesa birria tacos, pozole, mussels, fish tacos and it was borderline too much food - their portion sizes are generous! Pozole (5/5) -- first time trying it and it was super rich and flavorful. Perfect amount of heat and a good amount of tortilla chips Mussels (4.5/5) -- the portion size was much more than I expected. Docked half a point because the mussels themselves are smaller than I'm used to, but that's just me being picky. The broth was very tasty. I would still get this again! Nice LH establishment. Fairly small dining area, but wasn't busy on a Monday evening and easily found a seat at the bar. Didn't order any drinks, but the cocktail list seemed decent and appropriately priced. Had the totopos and salsa, and two Al pastor tacos. The totopas were just okay for me. They were maybe a little too thick? And could have used a touch more salt. They weren't bad, but as a chip I had no desire to keep eating MORE. Both the accompanied salsas were great, but definitely not mild (FYI). The arbol salsa has a deep flavor. The tacos are pricey considering how many great tacos are available in SF for less, but the portions and quality make up for it. The tortillas are house made from white corn, don't break at all, and have great flavor. The pork is blessedly not overcooked, and comes in solid chunks. The charring of the pineapple is also a great addition to the flavor of the taco as a whole. Overall I would come back to try the pozole when it's offered, but for $30, I'd personally be happier with some street tacos for the half the price. read more

They have mushroom tacos that have such a great flavor that even meat eaters would want over other options. I usually get the fish tacos which come very crispy and juicy. Otra is one of my favorite places in the bay! This is my third or fourth time going here and my go-to is always the roasted sweet potato tacos!!! Please try these, they are delicious! When it comes tacos, I'm usually an al pastor or carne asada girly myself but these are SO good, the cashew crema is amazing This time, we also tried the roasted mushroom tacos which were so yummy and had a very unique flavor along with the conchas borrachas (but without chorizo). The design inside is beautiful, prior to this I typically sit at their outdoor area in the front but it was raining. Came here with two other people and we were seated pretty quickly (it was around 6pm). Ordered the Frijolitos con Chips to start and it was enough as an appetizer to share between 3 people. We each ordered different tacos--I ordered the Baja Style Fish Tacos and then added the "Quesabirria" Style Tacos later on. I'm partial to a corn tortilla so I really enjoyed that flavor with the protein and toppings together. Also ended up ordering the spicy brussel sprouts since we were still feeling a bit hungry. The brussel sprouts definitely weren't too spicy and it was actually more sour due to the acid they used (lime? Lemon?) to brighten the dish. The food was really good though for some things I think they leaned heavy on the salt but other than that it was great. Our server was really nice and the decor really fit the neighborhood tacos restaurant theme. There was also a portable heater placed near our table since we were closest to the door. The only thing I will say that gave me a slight shock was the price and the amount of food that goes with it. But I just take it to be a part of the SF upcharge nowadays. read more

Went on a Tuesday night with a friend, we were able to get a table easily. The restaurant was dimly lit, with a well-stocked bar and a few tables lining the opposite wall. We started with the totopos (tortilla chips) and salsas, which were well salted, thin, and crispy. My favorite was the red salsa--I believe the charred salsa molcajete--it was just so flavorful and rich. I ordered the cauliflower pastor tacos as my main, my friend got the fish tacos. Each dish came with two by default. Both were really tasty, but pretty small for how much they were. Maybe we should have ordered one more plate of tacos to split between us, but oh well. We went to this place at ~6pm for food and drinks. They started getting busy maybe 15-20 minutes later. We were planning on drinks and a few appetizers but were rushed to finish. This place is right next to Danny Coyle's where I come in for morning soccer games over weekends and I finally gave into the temptation to try Otra as I was heading out on a Saturday afternoon. Amazing mushroom tacos! Loaded with mushrooms. The huge variety of fillings in the taxi gave it such an amazing flavor. It is sorta spicy in itself, but if you're a spice lover, ask them for their spicy sauce on the side. It makes it even better. I'd definitely rate this dish 5/5. The only downer for me was that there were only two tacos for $14, and that seemed a tad pricy despite the inflation, the location in SF, and the quality of the food. I wish there was one more taco. Maybe it's the right price and I probably didn't get the right feel of the ambiance since I came in at 11:30 AM by myself. The restaurant was fairly empty and there were less than 5 people. The lady who took my order was very friendly! I was confused if I should get another plate of tacos (sweet potato) but I didn't want to spend over $30 for a brunch meal by myself. I will definitely be back once again after another soccer game, because I want to try some of their other dishes. I rate the place 4.5/5, but I couldn't round off to 5 because of the portions for a $20 meal with tip. :( read more

Finally got to try Otra! We walk by it all the time and I guess the San Diegan in me was hesitant to try this and be severely disappointed (bc we're taco snobs). And I gotta say, my partner and I were pleasantly impressed. It's good for what it is, this isn't your homestyle/street food type mexican food. This is your "fancy resort in mexico type" and for that, it is good. Especially paired with their well made cocktails, thats a win. In terms of food, I recommend the beef tacos. Its not dry and has lots of flavors, ask for their habanero hot sauce if you wanna kick it up a notch. Their al pastor tacos were fine, it didn't have the classic red char but it wasn't bad. Drinks are dangerously good though, if you like mezcal, this is the place to try it. I liked my Paloma and my partner enjoyed his old fashion (i forget the actual name). read more

This place was very good! Not like mind blowingly good or anything like that, but a solid Mexican brunch place. Came here today with my sister and brother in law, and their pup Bailey. They have outdoor seating and it wasn't cold out (rarity in SF this winter) so it worked out perfectly. We got some chips and salsa, and I got the beef hash. My sister got the beef tacos and my brother in law got the pozole. The chips and salsa were great - only thing that could have made them better was warm chips but who cares. The salsa was certainly house made, very good kick, and surprisingly the salsa verde was a bit hotter than the rojo. My hash was nothing to write home about honestly but what can you expect, its potato, veggies and cut up beef. I guess the beef just wasn't that flavorful (didn't seem to have really any Mexican flavor to it - cumin, etc.), or tender. But it was still a solid dish. The eggs were perfectly poached with a nice orange yolk. I also tried the beef tacos and those were yummy, though my sister thought they were spicy. Brother in law loved his pozole. Enjoyed the two salsas that came with the totopos and salsa appetizer--both were complex and mouth warming. The mushroom tacos were full of umami and well-balanced, though on the mushy side if you care about textures. Everything tasted fresh and made with quality ingredients. The drinks were solid and positively cheap at $12 a pop. Service was great, and the vibe inside was great for a casual-ish date.
