Rotten fish
John S.

Very disappointing experience. The food was not good at all -- we have mention the fish was smalls bad and it didn't taste fresh. Instead of addressing the issue, the owner was extremely rude and gave us the check right away, And refused to serve us even though we hadn't asked for it yet. Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend this place.

Edamame
Amanda S.

We went on a week night for dinner and got seated right away. We asked if they did sake bombs and got a very rude response so we just got beers. The edamame was very good. The rolls were just ok. Customer service wasn't that great but it's close to hotels and downtown.

My favorite Sushi restaurant. Great service!!! Please come and enjoy and leave a review. What is your favorite - please share

This is hands down our favorite sushi spot. The sushi is consistently delicious and beautifully presented, and every roll feels fresh and thoughtfully made. Our server was incredibly kind and attentive, which made the experience even better. We live about 45 minutes away but we keep coming back because it never disappoints.

Spicy tuna with Mango on top

Great service, came tonight Thursdays and our waitress was very nice. I had a tiger spicy tuna with mango added. Was delish! Wish I remembered the girls name, I didn't take my receipt but if I'm back in this area... I will return

Lovely little family run place, warm and inviting. The chefs are outstanding, and the service is spot on. The food is always fresh, never had a single "off" piece.

We love Toro and are here every chance we get. This has been our number one spot for years. The employees are all friendly, everything is always amazing every time we go.

Takeout dinner on a Monday? When most other spots in town are closed, Otoro is open and has you covered! The online order system is easy and our food was ready in 15 minutes! Woohoo! Our order -edamame -beef gyoza -spicy tuna roll - add crunch - love! -green dragon roll -big brother roll - my new fave! Love that their rolls are full of fresh fish, but are also a manageable size. Fresh, delicious, nutritious! Do it!

Chef's Special Nigiri Moriawase 10 piece to go.
Linda C.

TLDR: I highly recommend the 10 piece chef's special. Situation: I don't know if it's because of the demographic of the area or that we're further from the city but it's been so hard to find a good sushi spot. Most of the sushi spots I've seen so far mainly offer rolls / Westernized. So when I saw Otoro had a 10 piece chef's choice for nigiri, I was excited to try it out. Experience: I was very impressed. The chef's choice was like an omakase quality selection. The fish was extremely fresh and delicious. I loved the variety too. I would say this particular order was comparable to those in the city. Why the chef's choice: The difference between the 10 piece chef's special nigiri moriawase and the 10 piece nigiri moriawase is that the chefs special is more fancy. For example it includes pieces like unni (yum), some of the pieces are charred or had fun toppings. It definitely makes the experience much more exciting. Space: I ordered over the phone and gave them my ETA. I got my order correctly and on time which was great. The space itself is pretty cozy. Location: I got a little lost finding Otoro since it's in a plaza with other businesses. The restaurant is located across from hardware stores in the yellow buildings. There's also a free parking lot space behind the restaurant too. A sign might be helpful! Feedback: I might be mistaken but two of my pieces might have been the same. I wasn't too upset because it was one of my favorite pieces but wish each piece was different. This is nitpicky but some of the slices could have been more even but sharing to make the whole presentation A+! I would also explain on the menu the difference between the regular and chef's special 10 piece. Luckily I had called in so learned about the difference. Also wish it was a few dollars less. (Everything was $40 post tax). Overall verdict: For Sonoma County and in comparison to other sushi spots here, the chef's selection was a solid 5 stars. I'm glad I don't need to wait until I visit the city again to find delicious nigiri. I would come back again, and hopefully with other people next time!

Are soy wraps instead of nori available upon request? I love to accompany my sushi loving husband and want to do some rolls but I am not a fan of nori. I love it when I can choose the soy wrap option because I can participate with most of the menu.

I would say call ahead to see if they have soy wraps available. We have never had an issue with customizing rolls to fit different tastes tho I've never gotten something soy wrapped to be honest. Cucumber wrapped yes, but the prior no haha.… Read more

The appetizers started the evening on uneven footing. The first course was acceptable, though the vegetables seemed tired, as though they had been pre-sliced the day before. The second appetizer -- boiled fatty eel with cabbage and carrots -- was bland and forgettable. In hindsight, I should have sent it back. The tempura was similarly underwhelming. It felt indistinguishable from what you might receive as part of a lunch special at an average neighborhood Japanese restaurant. At this level, I expect a lighter, more delicate batter with a crisp, almost ephemeral texture. The nigiri was good, though not exceptional. One puzzling choice was the use of chopped scallions on every piece. The piece topped with truffle-infused butter was theatrically seared tableside using an oversized torch that looked like it came from the plumbing aisle at Home Depot. The presentation felt unnecessarily aggressive and distracting; a smaller culinary torch would have been far more appropriate. That said, the ahi tuna itself was outstanding -- probably the best slice of ahi I have ever had, and easily the highlight of the meal. Dessert was another miss: an eggy bread course that tasted as though it had been prepared days earlier and stored under plastic wrap. Oddly, one of my biggest frustrations was the absence of iced tea. Virtually every Japanese restaurant serves iced tea, so its omission felt strangely out of touch. Service was efficient but impersonal. Courses arrived too quickly until I specifically requested more time between dishes. There was little warmth or engagement throughout the evening. I've had excellent meals at Asahi Sushi in the past, which made this experience even more disappointing. Unfortunately, this visit did not justify the price, and overall the meal fell far below expectations.

Huge portions with 9 pieces each which melt in your mouth. One star off as they use imitation crab. Large Sapporo for $7.95 must be the best deal in town (like 3 beer equivalent). Pure bliss. The roasted beets with walnuts and idazabal cheese were delicious and very generous, a reminder that one shouldn't go to a tapas restaurant alone! So take a friend or two and go.

The food though was disappointing. The most interesting item was the clams that came in a cava broth with garlic and parsley. They brought some toasted hearty bread to soak up the sauce. The baby kale salad was also nice with shaved fennel and manchego. The other three dishes were both off and a bit weird. The cauliflower came with bacon, which was good, and sweet dates; the dates were an odd addition and they stuck to your teeth. The calamari, was prepared well - it wasn't chewy - but it just had an off flavor, or at least one I haven't experienced before. Same too for the octopus. This was a much larger portion than typical - two tentacles, plus potatoes and olives. The octopus though was rather mealy. Small Spanish red wine list; only four. Tried two and neither were our favorites. The 1970s-80s classic rock soundtrack was an odd choice for background music.

Making reservations was so easy and the woman I spoke with was very accommodating! When we arrived they sat us right away and were prompt on getting our drinks! We also got the little gem salad and the sourdough (this is a must) and we got the daily ceviche which was halibut with peppers. My partner got the hanger steak and it was cooked to perfection. She only gave up one bite to me but boy was it good! In the past we have also had the kale Caesar, the clam strips, yellow tail ceviche, and fresh oysters. I have not had a bite of food there that I did not enjoy. The place is shaped a little weird and some seats are more desirable than others. We love the booth (you pretty much have to make reservations to get one) but it is worth mentioning that we are both pretty average size people (maybe a bit more than average if I'm being honest) but anyone who is on the bigger side probably wouldn't fit in the booth. It's a really tight squeeze getting into them because they have these little wall things that come out a tad too far. It is great people watching from there though! We knew immediately this was going to be a special night. We went all in with the chef's prix fixe menu, and it delivered from the very first bite. Warm, homemade dinner rolls -- fragrant with thyme, garlic, and chili flakes, served alongside pillowy whipped butter -- set the tone perfectly. We loved them so much we asked for a second basket without a moment's hesitation. The Sonoma County Organic Salad that followed was nothing short of a revelation: crisp Little Gem lettuce, Pioneer Micro Herbs and edible flowers, beautifully shaved vegetables, whipped fromage blanc, and a Green Goddess dressing that tied it all together with effortless elegance. Perfection is the only word for it. For our entrées, the Petrale Sole Meunière was a masterclass in refined, soulful cooking -- the Costeaux sourdough croutons, potato fondant, haricot verts, and caper beurre noisette working in perfect harmony. And the pork porchetta with nduja? Cooked flawlessly, bold, deeply satisfying, and utterly memorable. We paired the meal with the Valette Rosé of Pinot Noir, which has instantly earned a place among the finest rosés we've ever tasted -- vibrant, nuanced, and a dream with every course. Dessert brought the ItsNotA 'Snickers Bar' and the Almond Frangipane, both executed brilliantly and the ideal sweet finale to an extraordinary meal. It's a great room with good energy and although I was expecting more of a white tablecloth experience, it was casual, which was fine. Unfortunately, my entire entree (sole meunière with green beans and fondant potatoes) was uniformly bland...no trace of salt or seasoning whatsoever. The entire dish was blah. I can't remember the last time I complained about inadequate seasoning, but when it's nowhere to be found, it's hard to ignore. The beans were pretty much raw. I enjoy bright green beans served al dente beans, but raw? No. The fondant potatoes were anemic (zero golden color, zero confit). All three pieces seemed steamed, steamed unevenly, and served cold. One of the three fondants was very firm and barely cooked. I needed to cut it with a knife. The other two were fork tender but alas, cold and flavorless. Honestly, it was kinda weird that all three components of this dish were just so darned boring and lacking temperature. I had only started my meal when I told the server about my impression of the dish. He took my feedback cheerily and said he'd let the chef know for future reference, but no "How can we fix this?" It was a bummer. When eating a classically delicious dish feels like punishment, something's not right. On the bright side, the server had a very nice manner. The room was lovely and had good energy. The menu was priced lower than we expected. And the chilled english pea soup was absolutely delicious. So Valette is capable of getting some things right. I'm not sure whether to chalk it up to "off night" or poor quality control in the kitchen. I guess both, maybe.
