It was an unexpected Tuesday night visiting Osake for the first time (well, my first) with friends and family! S E R V I C E: Service was impeccable. We were served by the amazing Chef Gary Chu himself, and he made customized meals based on our preferences. We were the last people to leave, and we didn't feel rushed at all. Sitting at the bar is a great option if you want to watch most of your food being made and if you want to talk to Gary! My husband isn't a fan of raw fish, and Gary converted him that night! F O O D: Everything tasted amazing. I had the best sashimi I've had in a while, and the cuts of the fish were fresh, melted in my mouth. The martini shrimps were delicious as well - nice crunchy flavor with carrots, and the sea urchin with toast was something out of this world! I've been coming here for years. Actually this is the first place I've ever had sushi, but before that, I was obsessed with their lemon chicken entree. Now since then, the sushi has always been made with love, quality you can taste. The service is elite, dining experience is amazing with white tablecloth (or bar) and friendly and helpful staff. Before, I was told they have limited GF items but today, I was told they can make everything GF for an up charge of $3 per roll like substituting real crab or crispy shrimp. With that, I was able to try some new items and every single one roll we got was delicious. Got a mix of different fishes and types of rolls (see pictures below). They also offer a house made soy honey sauce that they can make GF, and tamari. Spicy mayo is already GF. Now knowing what I know, I won't wait so long to come back. read more

Not sure why it's taken me so long to get here - as a kid I have fantastic memories with my grandparents at the now closed Gary Chu's that was located in downtown Santa Rosa. I guess partly because I didn't realize the ownership of Osake. The experience at Osake was great, the staff were very friendly and attentive. The restaurant is clean and has really pretty decorative wall hangings. For appetizers we ordered the Martini Prawns (based on other reviews) and the spicy garlic edamame. The prawns were delicious and served in a martini glass - think walnut prawns sauce for taste but comes without the walnuts. The edamame had a garlic teriyaki sauce on them - which I haven't had before and enjoyed. For lunch I had the Marilyn Monroll (cute play on words) shrimp tempura, crab salad, scallops and spicy sauce. I'd order this again, so good with the crunch and the spicy sauce. My daughter had the dynamite roll - smoked salmon baked and drizzled with spicy sauce. We both finished our order- no complaints here. There is also plenty of parking. We have eaten here many times and the food doesn't disappoint. The food was well packaged. The carburetor roll is my favorite and the hot and sour soup and edamame are delicious! My only issue is that the prices are a bit high for what you get. It obviously hasn't stopped us though because we keep going back. read more

Hit Osaka on a Tuesday night, we sat at the bar and caught the end of dinner service. We were all lucky enough to be served by the man Gary Chu himself! Started off with martini prawns, and drinks. They also served my sake in a weird box...never seen that before and was not about it. Their Cancun roll tasted pretty good but was also just an ugly roll. We waited to be addressed but the older Asian hostess didn't greet us or say anything, although she looked right at us. We didn't feel welcome at all. Found this place by chance, were in the neighborhood and looked up sushi. It was a positive surprise. Very friendly and fast service. Reasonably large menu, good selection of wines and drinks. We ordered Seafood Battayaki and Beef Sukiyaki. Seafood Battayaki was nothing short of excellent - up to even mine spoiled by New York expectations. Great sauce, shrimps and scallops cooked to perfection. Beef was a beet short on the taste, almost like a boiled beef, however the dish in it's entirety was not bad. One of the rolls was fresh and tasty. The only reason for 4 stars - Matcha Tiramisu. Stay away. We couldn't eat it, to my surprise they did not offer to exchange it for anything else. We visited Osake for what we thought was the first time. My fiance realized one of the last meals he had with his late grandmother was here! It made the occasion even more special. We've been looking for a good sushi spot closer to us cause we normally go to the next town over. Osake might be our new spot! We ordered a few different things to get an idea of what they offer. Dan got the prawn martini, pork belly tapas, and a dynamite roll. I ordered the lemon chicken (one of my favorite foods) and the What Is It Roll. Everything was delicious. We both really enjoyed our rolls and discussed next time ordering just rolls. My lemon chicken was good. I forget not everywhere serves it with rice. Totally fine, I had it without. The sauce was a little thick and there was a lot! It was tasty but I'd probably ask for them to go light on the sauce next time. The service was interesting. We were sat in a corner away from everyone, which is fine but seemed a little weird. Our server was nice but didn't bother to make conversation or ask follow-up questions (like, would you like rice with that). It was just kind of straight to the point: no questions, here you go. The restaurant itself was super cute. Lots of seating options and I love a good fish tank! We will be back for sure! More food to try! read more

First visit tonight and definitely won't be my last! I typically get takeout when having sushi since most places aren't very well furnished or lit but Osake is definitely a dine-in destination. It's a bit on the pricey side but the fish is top notch and generously portioned. We tried the Lisa roll and about a half-dozen kinds of nigiri - all was fantastic. They have a great wine list that includes the usual suspects but also some very well-chosen lesser known labels. My partner vouches for the extensive sake list as well. Service is great - everyone is always looking in on tables so you aren't relying only on your main server. Will definitely be back! read more

Osake provided an elegant night with perfect ambiance matching the delicious food, although they are very busy on a Friday night, the service and reception was excellent. Food was slower than expected to come out, however, the wait was well worthwhile. We had the Martini Prawns, Lisa and Marylinmonroll sushi rolls. All excellent making us want to return for more. Osaka is a great little place for Sushi in Santa Rosa! I have always loved the way they do their martini prawns! I personally think they are the best version in Sonoma County! While their restaurant has always been a nice place for dinner, the new outdoor seating since Covid is even better. It's in the parking lot, but unlike many other restaurants that have transitioned to this, Osakes outdoor seating still feels private and not just some palates in a parking lot. I'm a long time customer and a fan of their sushi. Recently noted that they offered Chinese food options on their menu. The prices listed were high in my opinion compared to my local go to spot for Chinese food but decided to give it a try. I was underwhelmed. Flavor was mediocre, portion servings were a little on the skimpy side. It was edible but for the price IMO if they are going to offer Chinese food as an option, even at a Japanese/Sushi restaurant, it needs to be better than mediocre. I will be back for their sushi but will avoid the Chinese food offerings. read more

This place is a nice sushi oasis in Santa Rosa. The 101 corridor is mainly quick, convenient pit stop type of food, but there are several excellent options to choose from in the city, if one is willing to get off the beaten path. This was one of those places. Our waiter was very friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. The "vibe" of the space is low-key, relaxed, and welcoming. Most importantly, the sushi was well prepared. The fish on the nigiri tasted fresh, and the rice was cooked nicely (and that is important!). My only complaint is that the martini prawns should have come in bucket size...hecka good. Never really memorable in all the visits I've had at Osake. Gary Chu was there last night and I guess out of anxiety he misspoke and said, "I've never liked kids," as my daughter and infant son were looking at the fish tank at the entrance.
