We found grilled chicken in our oyoko don which is quite unusual. The chicken was overcooked, making it dry and tough. The fish in the sushi was mediocre. Other people noticed some fishy smell in the sushi. The fish may not be as fresh as it should be. I would definitely not recommend this subpar Japanese restaurant. read more

The inside ambiance is really nice here! I like the decor and the food is pretty tasty, even if a little small. My suggestion is to eat inside and enjoy the atmosphere. Don't get the food Togo. They charge a $1.50 "to-go" fee and also tax you on top of that. I didn't know this until after I paid. I get home and my order was wrong. I specifically asked for a certain ingredient not to be put in my handroll and they did it anyways. Had I just eaten there I could have sent the item back and had it corrected. But since I was all the way home there was no chance I was driving back. To the owner: If you charge a to-go price please make sure the items being made to-go are accurate. read more

We stopped in here recently because we were in the area, and another sushi place we go to was too busy. We were so glad we did! the service was on point from the we walked through the door. Our server, Yue, was amazing! she gave us her tips, and helps us curate an absolutely delightful tour of the menu. We started with oysters that were supremely fresh and perfectly shucked - they were also topped with tobiko which was amazing! we followed that up with hamachi, tatake (which was amazing aged toro which was absolutely spectacular!). we also had a delicious hamachi kama! they make their oak soy sauce- and it is delicious - soft and slightly sweet. First off, they source high quality fish and it shows. The Tuna and Salmon nigiri were 5/5. The salmon was rich and buttery and melts in your mouth. Smooth and tender not mushy or chewy. They tuna was fresh and not fishy. And the sushi rice was done well. We had a server who was passionate about the food and explained their chef takes pride in his work and is picky about fish quality he accepts. The salmon is Scottish salmon known for its balanced flavor and reliable texture. They would love to provide New Zealand Ora King Salmon, but it would be too pricey. Love that they are open to sharing where they source their fish. I like the updated decor much brighter than before. I also tried their saba and Tekka Maki which I would rate 4/5. So Sonoma County in terms of how some great eats are occasionally found in nondescript strip malls. Don't let the appearance of the surrounding bus stop and big box retailers fool you. This place is legit. We had to eat and run because we were going to see the Sonoma Symphony perform (follow me for my review on that), but they delivered a great japanese style meal quickly, at the right temperature, and with great flavor and presentation. The miso soup was pure Umami and my Teriyaki Salmon bento box was both generous and delicious. And reasonably priced at $17. My date found her Unagi to be nice and tender. We came here during lunch and ordered the 3-item bento box with salmon teriyaki, saba, and tempura. My husband got the lunch saba shioyaki. Both dishes were delicious and served in generous portions. We also ordered the calamari as an appetizer. It was okay -- not the best we've had -- but the dipping sauce was really good and made up for it. The miso soup was delicious. The only issue we had was with the pricing. The menu listed the saba lunch special at around $16 and dinner at $20, but we were charged the dinner price. When we brought it up, the staff explained that the menu was from the previous restaurant and hasn't been updated, and that there's no distinction between lunch and dinner portions anymore. In our opinion, that's not fair to the customer -- if the menu is outdated, that should be communicated up front to avoid confusion. Updating the menu should be a priority when taking over a restaurant, especially when pricing changes. So just a heads up: double-check prices when ordering, as the menu might not reflect the current ones. Other than that, the food and overall experience were great! read more

The first time we tried Shiki, we were impressed by the lovely clean dining room, but chose to sit on patio since the weather was beautiful. The service was stellar, Yu, who is one of the owners, served us. She was friendly, attentive and engaging. I can see why the locals like this place. Good portions and good prices. I'd go here for lunch if I was working in the area. It's not bad but not the place you go to to treat yourself to a special meal. The rice was too sweet and the scallops were mushy and flavorless. The rolls were ok, but again, not a lot of flavor. WOW! What a great new sushi spot in Santa Rosa! I first noticed the welcoming atmosphere on a chilly evening--it felt so warm and inviting inside. The server (unfortunately I didn't catch his name) took such great care of us. One of our group has a gluten allergy and he reassured her that he would take great care of her. She received a beautiful extra special roll that she loved. Another friend tried the Green Curry Ramen, concerned it might be too spicy. The server assured her it was more sweet than spicy, though she did find it had more heat than expected. Overall the experience was great. My mom and I came here because we thought it was a chain for a place with the same name we used to frequent in Washington but it turns out that the word Shiki in Japanese means seasons! Happy coincidence for us because we really enjoyed our lunch! They make their own soy sauce in house and it's all low sodium and it tastes lovely. They have an extensive cold sake menu and a decent wine menu. The sushi is very well made and all of the ingredients are fresh and fabulous. My mom got a poke bowl which was perfection. The prices are also fair. The atmosphere is adorable and the music they played was lovely which adds so much to the experience. We met the owner (Yue) and she is VERY knowledgeable and friendly. We sat at the bar! My husband ordered the Appetizer version of the Tempura Combo. Very tasty. He also had the hot Sake! I ordered the Sake Salmon and am very particular about how thin I want the salmon sliced! Amazing. The presentation of my salmon was spectacular! Cold Asahi for me! Get the Shiki Dancing Toro! It reminds me of a course I've had at Single Thread and it's amazing. My husband and I got the bento boxes for lunch with some rolls and the quality is amazing. Definitely recommend and will be back!
