I just called to order pickup and was put on hold for 10 minutes. I hung up and decided to call back to try and order again and no one answered. Then I called back a 3rd time and no one answered. Absolutely wonderful sushi restaurant! The best and softest sushi rice we've ever tasted, with delicious rolls and surprisingly efficient service. Very tasty sushi. Me and my girl went here recently and got some food to go which when I got there I kinda wish we had sat inside. Just looking from the outside it looked like it had a nice traditional interior. The prices seemed reasonable and the fish seemed fresh. We ended up getting a Sebastopol and Redwood Roll which were both really good. The Redwood one reminded me of a caterpillar roll. Very fresh and a lot of flavors with each bite. I'm never really in a Tuna mood but I was really shocked at how much I ended up liking the Sebastopol roll. Ultimately this is the kind of quality I'm used to in the Bay Area. What the fuck happened to this place? DO NOT COME HERE!!! It's been several years since I've been here. Ordered the sashimi/sushi combo dinner and waited. During the time I noticed that the table smelled unclean but I couldn't do anything about it. The best part of the meal was the salad. The miso soup was too salty. HOWEVER, the worst part was the sushi rice. It tasted stale, had an undercooked gritty texture and was just horrible. I literally had to remove the fish from the rice to eat it. Talking about fish, they were not fresh either. Looked ok but didn't have a good flavor. One piece was super fishy. The whole meal was worse than had I gotten supermarket sushi. At least with supermarket sushi I know I'm paying for shit. For $40 it's an insult what they served me. WHAT THE FUCK is wrong with Sebastopol and sushi? Sushi Hanna makes shitty rice with too much sugar and Tozai makes rice using old stale leftovers. Either the sushi chef is incompetent, doesn't quality control or doesn't care. Absolutely love coming here. This sushi spot has been a tradition for us after every Halloween night. Food is delicious and love all the vegan options. It's a cozy little spot that offers lots of specialty rolls. The service is excellent here too. This is my fav sushi spot on this side of town. Went to Dining Out (the Food for Thought fundraiser) last night at Sushi Tozai. Hadn't been in several years. Our server was perfect. The food (a couple of rolls, miso soup, edamame) and drinks were very good. Everything was clean and fresh. Please ignore the very nasty review posted recently. 5 STARS all the way. We've been going here for so many years I can't remember when they opened. So many birthdays and celebrating shared here. First of all, I love the simple aesthetics, the feel, the staff and of course the food. My closest friend is vegetarian so not always easy to find the most delicious sushi that's vegetarian friendly. But they really have this challenge they've created in to an art form. Our two favorites are veggie Dragon Roll and Futomaki. There's compared to my mom's. Growing up my mom made Futomaki for me every birthday. So naturally, I associate it with mother's love. I've ordered this from so many places. But Sushi Tozai makes the best of anyplace I've been. My birthday dinner last week this is exactly what we ordered plus veggie tempura and veggie sunomono. My goodness it was the most exciting I've felt about a meal in a long time. We also ordered the tomago nigiri. So absolutely delicious. They offer really fabulous miso soup as well. I left there nostalgic and completely content. The sushi here is awesome and it's the only place I go to anymore after doing my research and consistently trying other sushi restaurants. I dare you to do a side-by-side comparison of other sushi restaurants in Sonoma County and tell me Tozai isn't better. I. DARE. YOU. This place gets way too much hate from idiots and we need more people to speak up for this amazing sushi eatery. The ambiance is SUPPOSED to be calm, mellow, lights down low sort of vibe. If you don't like it, that's your problem. I'm eating my three different rolls of sushi right now and it's extremely well made with great cuts, the BEST rice, amazing flavor, fresh as can be, and I can't get enough. And the real mark of great sushi is judging by their sashimi. No sauce. No rice. Nothing else. Just fish. And I've never had better besides in Hawaii or when I go spearfishing myself. I strongly recommend Sushi Tozai for its incredible variety of vegetarian options! We called for takeout at dinner time and it was ready very quickly! Some of my favorites were the tempura sweet potatoes, the asparagus rolls, and Inari. The dragon roll was beautiful and chock full of vegetables, but I didn't get much flavor from the mango or avocado wrapping the rolls. I appreciated that the shop tried to minimize packaging to the greatest extent possible. The service was also very friendly. I would definitely return! read more

It's a good Sushi place with reasonable prices. Our server, Hope was positive, cheerful and we never had to wait. We had 4 different rolls. I like the Sebastopol roll the best. It had some crunch with the tempura shrimp in it. The rainbow roll is very pretty because each piece has a different fish on the top. We had lotus blossom tea that is as beautiful as it is tasty. If you go early, it's crowded and quite loud. After 7:00/8:00 it's much quieter. There is ample parking in the back or on the street. Our tab was $35pp without cocktails. read more

Stopped in here on a weeknight after a sushi crazing a quick yelp search for vegan sushi in area. Cute little restaurant with a good atmosphere. And turns out this place has quite a selection of vegan items, including sushi clearly marked on the menu, yay and yum! It was pretty busy here, small crowd at the door waiting for hostess, I believe they are maybe short on staff (with now hiring sign on door) but they were quite busy too, place was full and not room for too many more. We got lucky and snagged a spot at the bar, turning down option to wait for table. Quick service at the bar! We enjoyed the tempura, avocado roll and yam roll! And we'll probably be back! read more

Love this place! Definitely the best sushi in Sebastopol. The fish is always fresh and the prices are pretty typical for sushi. Today my coworker and I order egg rolls as a starter and 3 sushi rolls. The egg rolls were pretty standard, nothing special. But the sushi was amazing! We got the Rainbow roll, Sebastopol roll, and a spicy hamachi roll. Their spicy mayo is very different than I've seen before. It's lighter in color which translated in its taste. It was less creamy, but I appreciated its lightness especially when I started the meal with something as heavy as deep fried eggs rolls. I think the standout for me was the spicy hamachi roll. It only had hamachi, onions, and spicy mayo, but I really enjoyed the simplicity of it. I will definitely be back to try more rolls! read more

I love this place! They make excellent hand rolls, salmon skin, hamachi, spicy octopus, spicy tuna... you name it they make it! I've been coming here for years ( about 10 years) I can't believe Ive never written a review. A little hidden gem in Sebastopol! I usually order veg maki paired with Nigiri and handrolls. The spinach roll, eggplant roll and asparagus roll is so simple yet satisfying. The texture of the salmon is always on point! Silky smooth and fresh! I also like hot apps like the lamb lollipops in ponzu!! Divine! The cheese puffs? A staple, simply cheesy crunchy cream cheese filled wontons with sweet and sour dipping sauce. The vegetarian/vegan options are phenomenal.. I recommend it to any vegan/vegetarian. I like to order veggie dragon every once in a while, they replace the shrimp with yam tempura and the unagi with mango!!! Absolutely amazing, you don't miss the meat at all! this has always been our go to place for takeout. The last two times have been very, very disappointing. And last night I actually had plastic wrap in one of my rolls. And the rolls just didn't taste right. The spider roll I think had Kewpie mayonnaise on it or something and it not only looked gross, it ruined the roll. Neither of us finished our dinner. I recently ate here on a whim after a friend canceled our lunch plans, and I can honestly say that my only regret was not having tried it sooner. It was quite simply the best restaurant experience I've had in a long time; everything was wonderful! Wanting to sample a little of everything, I ordered the executive bento lunch which includes: salad, miso soup, tempura, sushi, and sticky rice. Each aspect was impeccably timed; salad and soup arrived first, and no sooner had I finished them than the rest of the meal was ready. The soup was just the thing on a cold day- steaming hot and rich in flavor. I'm not usually very enthused by salad, but this one was exceptional; the ginger dressing was so good, I could have eaten a jar of the stuff with a spoon. The vegetable tempura was terrific- loved the dipping sauce!- and the portion was larger than expected. I'd have liked a bit more broccoli, but really, it was perfect as is. Sushi-wise, I got the sweet potato maki, and, holy cow... delicious! The sweet potato in the center was tempura fried, which gave it a wonderful crisp texture that contrasted pleasantly with the soft, chewy rice. There was also a fresh little cucumber salad included- sunomono, I believe- which made a nice palate cleanser. The usual wasabi paste and pickled ginger were absent; perhaps they're not traditionally used for sweet potato maki, but I kind of enjoy putting them on, well, everything... so I requested them and they were quickly supplied. I don't usually give much thought to the ambiance, but I rather liked the design of the dining room; the dim lighting and wood-paneled walls made it peaceful and relaxing- a welcome retreat from the obnoxious modern world. Service was top notch. There was only one server working five tables, but she was always on the move- a real marvel- and I never felt neglected. She filled my water glass a total of four times and the check and change were both very prompt. My meal came to $15.80 after tax, but, although this is more than I'm accustomed to paying for a lunch special, I did not feel ripped off. The portion sizes and quality of the food itself made it worth every penny. Tozai is my new favorite sushi place, and I'll certainly be back. read more

I was so excited to eat here tonight as I haven't been in some time and it did not disappoint. Our waitress was so sweet and so friendly! We got my favorites, crispy calamari (the dipping sauce is to die for), the lamb chops (YUM) lemon chicken, Katsu chicken and sake nigiri along with some drinks. Service was great!
