Start by saying, Osake holds a special place in our lives. We've been going for more than 18 years, and it was the restaurant of our first date. We've had many special occasions there, birthdays, etc. Sadly, our last few experiences have resulted in our decision to no longer support this restaurant. Tonight our order, which was a takeout order, included a roll that, upon opening the container, smelled so bad that we decided we shouldn't eat it. The main living area of our house still smells so bad from it that we need to open the doors to air it out. Calling the restaurant to let them know, we were met with arguments that no one else had complained about it. I had high expectations due to the reviews and as someone who has lived and eaten sushi in many large cities (ny, sf, Boston) I was not necessarily expecting equivalence in quality, but I was at least hoping to be full. Usually two rolls are more than sufficient per person from 99% of Japanese restaurants. Since I was getting dinner for me, my husband and my mom I figured 5 rolls and a sashimi chefs choice was enough (totaling $120) When I opened the bags I was really disappointed by how small the rolls were, about half the size of your typical roll even though it was around the same price. Also rice and Miso soup were not included with the combo. Because there was so little food, my husband and my mom were too embarrassed to eat and everyone had to eat a second dinner afterward to be full. Taste wise it was about average. We had been looking forward to coming by for a while, but were kind of disappointed. Maybe it was just an off day (Monday). The waiter mentioned when we sat down that he was hot (it WAS hot, but I don't want my waiter telling me that he's hot). We ordered and then he brought a flight of sake but many of the sake cups were dirty. We asked for new ones and those were dirty too. This place is a gem! My husband and I always crave sushi after wine tasting in Glen Ellen. We asked our wine pourer if he could recommend a place. Without hesitation he recommend Osake. We went and sat at the sushi bar, ordered a few items at a time, and watched the chef prepare all the delectable bites with a swift hand. Everything was amazing! We had a range of food from sashimi and sushi rolls to Chinese stir fry. We asked the chef to surprise us with something and got the most memorable,delicious king crab tempura. OMG was it incredible. Hello...I was shopping and noticed this Japanese Restaurant very few feet away. I clearly was hungry so I worked my way to check out this place. I ordered the Spicy Chicken Breast with mixed veggies. The food was pretty good although there was no spice in the dish at all...very disappointing. The presentation was nice...the amount was very small for the price. I was not happy with the portions as compared to what they were charging for them. Definitely felt overpriced and the quality of the food was not what I had imagined. I talk to my server about the portion of the role and I complained about it before I even touched it and he said that he gets a lot of complaints like that but offered me no compensation for my dissatisfaction. Wow! This place is great! Let me start by saying that I am not a big fan of sushi. Cooked fish is not high on my list, much less raw fish. I was invited to have lunch there by a friend last week. This person loves sushi and drove up from the South Bay to meet me. I knew from word of mouth that Osaka is the favorite of many in Sonoma county. The service was excellent from the moment we arrived. We (I) asked for recommendations and were given excellent advice. The Martini prawns were awesome. I learned that raw fish, when fresh and properly prepared taste really good! I hid my fork as best as I could and dug in. There deserts are so good. I had the Bananas Foster. Good coffee too. So I ordered extra food...2 orders Uni $15 per order, 2 orders Ikura and one order scallop total $60!!! My son had a bowl of ramen noodles $17! Just OK. I'd been hearing some good things about Osake and I left disappointed. For the price (which I'll get to in a minute) I expected much better. The service was friendly, we were seated promptly during a busy dinner, and our sushi came quickly. We ordered yellowtail and salmon nigiri, as well as an Alaska roll and spider roll. The fish was very tasty! Definitely fresh. However, the soft shell crab was lackluster. Both rolls fell apart like they'd been rolled by amateur chefs. The rice was undercooked on the rolls to the point it was unpleasant and crunchy. The damage for everything you see? $37 plus tip. I'll pass, and instead recommend: Yireh Sushi, Sushiko, and Sushi Hana for the times where utmost quality is your goal. read more
