Just OK. I'd been hearing some good things about Osake and I left disappointed. For the price (which I'll get to in a minute) I expected much better. The service was friendly, we were seated promptly during a busy dinner, and our sushi came quickly. We ordered yellowtail and salmon nigiri, as well as an Alaska roll and spider roll. The fish was very tasty! Definitely fresh. However, the soft shell crab was lackluster. Both rolls fell apart like they'd been rolled by amateur chefs. The rice was undercooked on the rolls to the point it was unpleasant and crunchy. The damage for everything you see? $37 plus tip. I'll pass, and instead recommend: Yireh Sushi, Sushiko, and Sushi Hana for the times where utmost quality is your goal. read more

If You are anywhere as near as a big sushi fan as me, this Hass to be on your list of restaurants to go to. My husband and I have been here twice already and have yet to select anything on the menu that we do not like! Both times we have picked new and different items from the amazing choices on the menu, and both times we keep finding dishes we like and talk about the other dishes we want to try when we come back! Finding that kind of excitement in a restaurant is rare but this place has it! The owners are incredibly kind and generous with a warm greeting and superb service. One item to try is the ribeye wrapped asparagus, a dish my husband could not stop talking about after we tried it the first time, and he is not someone who gets excited about food so that is saying A LOT when he raves about a dish! The tuna carpaccio was melt in your mouth delicious! With truffle oil as a companion to that plate, it was hard not to inhale it all at once! The quality of the seafood is amazing, you can really tell the owners take great pride and effort in what they do and the food they prepare. Every meal has been a joy and such a treat! We have had such mixed experiences here, from absolutely atrocious service at the sushi bar to just fine service in the restaurant, from just OK to pretty good food, but never spectacular. Want to like it better; we keep trying every now and then. We are usually enthusiastic reviewers but this place has disappointed too many times. Better sushi available elsewhere in Sonoma County. Hands down my favorite Japanese food in Sonoma County. The martini prawns are always excellent, even though they do differ in spicy kick from time to time, they are always better than good. I love the spicy garlic green beans, and they even have wheat-free soy sauce if you ask for it! The best part of this place is the sake. My favorite sake on the planet is "Depth" ( Junmai, Chikurin "Fukamari" from Okayama) and it's unparalleled to me. I think it tastes like a chocolate-vanilla souffle without the wheat and unnecessary eating component. It's poured into a red and black square box to drink out of, always flowing over into the dish underneath. Delicious. Try it, you'll like it! Of course, there is the "secret menu" that everyone knows about, and granted, it's good, but real sushi is not about how many things you can deep fry and cover in sauces; it's about fish caught that day in icy cold seas, and delicately toasted seaweed, and perfectly moist rice. Now that's real sushi, and you can find that here...just remember to order the sake ;) read more

Oh boy!!!! My new favorite sushi/Japanese restaurant. I work at a law firm and ever since the shelter in place started there is only about 10 people in the office. One of the attorneys decided to buy lunch for the whole firm every Friday and this week I picked osake. I did not take a picture of everybody's food but here is a picture of mine. I love it and I'm definitely going to return and recommend this restaurant. I can't wait to return to this restaurant so I can try more items on the menu. I have not tried the martini prawns which I seen are the most popular item. I will be trying that next since we did spend a lot of money here. This is not your typical sushi restaurant...Belly up to the bar and watch the chef make your sushi rolls right in front of you. But it's not just the chef, it's the owner! Gary and his staff are super accommodating and always take great care of their guests. This has become an absolute favorite restaurant of mine. The quality and freshness is above and beyond, which I always get a bit nervous about with sushi restaurants. Don't make the mistake of not ordering the Martini Prawns, and go for some of the rolls with sauces. They make all their own sauces and they are so good! read more

Whatever you do, do not order there sushi rolls. The portion is not worth 20 dollars for 9 pieces. I will admit, there ambience is nice but I wish their food matched the quality of their decor. I would recommend OTORO sushi located in Healsburg, CA. Their portions are much better (better priced) and you get the sense that they really care about the quality of their sushi. read more

I was positively surprised that Osake Restaurant is open ( outdoor patio serving only) during Covid. Their outdoor patio is beautiful and has a cozy feeling. All tables are far distance from each other. And about sushi .... Delicious ! We tried several rolls. Our favorites: Marilyn Monroe, Cancun and 49ers ! Honestly 2 stars is the best review I can leave. We ordered via Door Dash: Chirashi, Chicken yakitori skewers, Shumai and Gyoza. The Chirashi fish were good and fresh but the rice was totally unseasoned and the seasoned chirashi rice is one of the most important aspects. Also there was a lot of what I thought to be badly pickled burdock root which was nearly inedible, but they claim it was shitake mushrooms, it had a sticky sweet sauce and was totally unpalatable and truly resembled no shitake mushroom I have ever had before. And that was the good news. The shumai weren't even remotely shumai, they were tiny little cubes of dough with an insipid cabbage flavor. We complained there was no pork in them - they claimed they were shrimp shumai (there was no shrimp flavor or texture either). And the reality is that "Shumai" are pork and "Hargow" are shrimp. Then there were the chicken yakitori skewers hard rubbery dry flavorless chicken - in all fairness probably would have been better fresh at the restaurant do not order these for home delivery. The Gyoza were almost OK and probably would have been ordered at the restaurant, but as delivered were dry with gummy skins. Will never get food from them again. The Osake Business manager responded as follows: Hi again, thank you for taking the time to rewrite another review so I can better understand your concerns. We have been in the business for 25 years, and take great pride in our sushi rice, as we agree, it is the most important aspect of Japanese food. We season our rice with a variety of Japanese vinegar and kelp to give it its flavor. The shitake is marinated in-house using a Japanese technique intending to have a sweet savory flavor. In Japan, this form of shitake is very common to include in chirasis. It is not intended to have a pickled flavor but often referred to as "simmering shitake." In addition, we apologize you didn't enjoy the shumai. In Japan, pork and shrimp shumai are both very popular, however our menu states shrimp shumai therefore I don't understand the confusion. We highly recommend our customers to dine in house if they are looking for the best experience. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused and greatly value your feedback, as it helps us continuously improve. My response to this response is: My wife and I have enjoyed Japanese food both here and throughout Japan. I totally stand by my previous review. Your chirashi rice had none of the vinegar or seaweed flavor that we normally associate with chirashi rice - it had no flavor at all other than rice. The prepared shitake was cloyingly sweet but other than that had no shitake flavor at all and was certainly not a complement to the well prepared fresh fish. And as for the shumai, by any standards they were the worst interpretation of a shumai I have ever had (more than a hundred). Our menu did not specify "shrimp" shumai and even if it had it wouldn't have helped as they had absolutely no shrimp flavor or texture either. - they were little slightly cabbage flavored dough balls. The Gyoza or Yakitori skewers might have been OK in your restaurant very fresh, but are definitely not improved as a home delivery item. read more

Went to Osake with my family. I think it is the best Sushi spot in town. The quality of the ingredients has always been on point. However, for a place that charges $16-17 for a premium roll, they really haven't done a great job of maintaining the place. It just appears a bit dated without much that has visibly changed over the past decade besides the television. That's really my only negative thought on Osake though. They have a great wine and sale list available and I love the "guide" on how to navigate the different sake styles. The shrimp and vegetable tempura was very average but the tolls were all well executed with great quality ingredients. I will continue to show up for special occasions because I just don't think anybody else in Santa Rosa does Sushi better. Cheers! read more

Liked Osake alot. Seems like Yelpsters go all in 4/5 reviews or all out 1/2 stars on Osake. I don't have an explanation for that but will agree with the upper end of the scale. Dined with a large group, service was terrific and found everything to be very tasty. Especially enjoyed a corn soup starter and the mushroom medallions over rice with vegetables. Very good indeed. The super Veg/Vegan friendly menu had lots of choices for everyone. Might be a Dr. McDougall influence in the area but the menu also highlighted "oil free" entrees and offerings. read more

Ask my 9 year old where she would like to go for dinner and there is one overwhelmingly used answer for that question. The girl loves her sushi. Gary Chus Osake Japanese Bistro in Santa Rosa is a favorite of our whole family. We usually start with the Martini Prawns, another fave of my 9 yr old and edamame beans. My 12 year old, who is more of a steak kinda gal, always starts with the miso soup and salad. This week's cute quote from my 9 year old "The salad dressing in Japan looks like face concealer make-up." As you can guess, she opted out of the salad portion of the meal. I have done both lunch and dinner at Osake and enjoy the atmosphere. It is toted as California Style Japanese and I would agree, I liked the California Wine List that is. However, we are still in wine country. When seated at the sushi bar, the chefs have terrific personality and also the waitstaff is attentive and sweet to children at the tables most of the time. Sometimes, when rushed the sushi rolls can be loose. Unless your children are well behaved and of course, enjoy Japanese cuisine, I do not recommend the place as it is a fine dining establishment. Although, they do give my 9 year old a cute pair of chopsticks cheats to help her eat without ever needing a fork. They are always very clean, nicely decorated with urns of flora and native murals and also have a L shaped fish tank to help pass time if you wait for a seat. Making reservation for Friday and Saturday nights is best since Osake is very popular with locals and tourists alike. The restaurant is located right next to the Montgomery Shopping Center on 2446 Patio Court - Santa Rosa, CA. You can call them at 707-542-8282 with questions or for reservations. But let me also state that the Martini Prawns Rock...and are quite addicting. The service is a hit or miss which is why I went with the 4 star rating. My favorite at Osake is the Cancun roll with uses pieces of jalapeno, habanero and masago on top instead of making them into a sauce. Most spicy rolls I find have a spicy sauce to create the heat. The cancun roll at Osake has no sauce, but uses fresh small chunks of peppers to light the tongue on fire. Worth a try and a great presentation. Owned & operated by semi-famous Santa Rosan Gary Chu. This place serves fancied-up American - Japanese concoctions to please the adventurous suburban dweller. One of the signature items is Martini shrimp. So named as it's served in a large Martini glass. It's a a few batter coated fried shrimp with a mayonnaise-y sauce augmented with sesame seeds, & some fresh spices. Interesting & fun to eat., Even more so if you've already had a few drinks. Sushi dinners are okay. Other menu items seem to be a love-child of American, Chinese & Japanese items. Food plating is pretty. Nice quality dishes, glassware, silverware. Every item contributes to the adult, sleek, sexy look. The food cleanliness factor is high - Very low oil content. The ingredients seems to be equally good. Still, I'm not crazy-in-love with the food or the concept here. It's just a bit too suburban trendy to please me. But as I live in this town now, this will be a place to bring guests who want this kind'a thing. Update 11-15-2007: Revisit for lunch. Party of four, we shared tastes. I ordered the bento box with teriaki steak. Meat was cheap & grisly. Sides of miso soup, cucumber, rice, nigiri sushi were all pretty mediocre. Osake is king of my world because they have my favorite roll. This is a big deal cause I'm a huge sushi fan. The roll isn't on the menu. It's called the 'Utah' Roll and it is 2DIE4! **Shrimp Tempura, rice on the outside, crab on top, then ahi on top of that and covered in this amazing spicyish sauce.** I absolutely love it. If you become a regular you even get your own fancy chopsticks that they keep in a wooden box in the back with your name on it. And I was graced with the opportunity to find out if these sticks were actually better and yes... they are. My recommendations (none are on the menu I think): -1 Martini (Deep fried shrimp covered in the above sauce and carrots served in a martini glass. Keep the sauce for dipping other rolls into it!!) -A Utah Roll (it's a big roll, so order slow, don't expect to eat as many rolls as you would anywhere else). -A Marilyn Roll (also not on the menu, but so worth it) -Seared Ahi, just plain ol seared ahi on a plate with some green mustardy stuff. So good. (I don't eat the green stuff but I hear it's good.) -A box of cold unfiltered sake. (And yes, I did say a box) Other good items- Pink Lady roll, Rock n roll. They even have a 'Cowboy Roll' which has steak in it. :-) As far as price I have never paid here (thank you ex boyfriend who is on a first name basis with the owner and has his own chopsticks) but I know it's pricier than most sushi places but worth it. I never would have imagined loving a sushi place in Santa Rosa of all places but it's the best. Gary, the owner, also owns Gary Chu's and a few other Chinese/Japanese places. He's a really nice guy and if it's not busy and you sit at the bar he'll improvise rolls for you. Oh! and there's this one dish you can order that has little crabs in it and he'll let them crawl on the bar before cooking if you're lucky! Great for kids to watch! This is our go to dinner when in town! The wait usually isn't bad and the prices are average. The dining room is nice with white table cloths and a bar area as well. The soft shell crab and martini prawn appetizers are delicious, must order! I always have the crispy chicken and it is so good! Friday date night here did not disappoint! We came here on recommendation from a friend and everything start to finish was AMAZING. We tried the martini prawns, prawn puff, spicy seafood ramen, Lisa roll, Marilyn Monroll & dragon roll and literally everything was delicious and perfectly presented. This place used to be the Japanese spot! I still do go at times but the prices are so high, it's really easy to want to check out other Japanese restaurants. Notable nigiri :Kobe, I would make my own rolls and of course martini prawns.. an old staple that I no longer need to revisit. If you work at a Japanese restaurant you know that the high prices are for the fish, but even the kitchen entrees are expensive.. why is that? Not because of the quality of ingredients..but Because at one point in time Japanese in Sonoma county was hard to find . Now that there's a competitive market for Japanese restaurants.. almost one in every neighborhood..they keep popping up yet most of them continue raising their prices, it seems counterintuitive. Osake isn't a downtown location, just a medium sized building near my old high school.. so what is so special about it? The service, the owner, the owner who works his own sushi bar. I really hope the other employees do well too! Worth trying but needs a revamp, be prepared to pay more than it's worth. read more

Wow what a disappointment. Now that Gary Chus is closed we went here and the service was still unfriendly like Gary chus but the food was not great. I wish I took a picture of the pork and vegetables in plum sauce. It looked like it was scrapings from other plates and a few pieces of burnt mushrooms and a few over cooked zucchini with the small amount of pork for the big price. The tempura was soggy and blah. And the small martini prawns were taken away before we could finish the carrots in the sauce and possibly one prawn was at the bottom No thank you or any friendliness at all. read more
