This place was referred by a friend. One of my favorite things to do is try new restaurants. I took my family who are use to very good sushi. We have been to Hana Japanese Restaurant, Morimoto's in Napa and your daily small sushi restaurants , Sushiholic, O! Sushi. My sushi the rice was dry as if it was in the fridge cut the day before, my prawn with vegetables was swimming in a sweet sauce, the vegetables or carrots tasted as if it was frozen , my sons salmon sashimi slices were large and slimy. You can smell the fish as if it was not fresh. My bowl of rice was not steaming or warm. The table ws dirty and the booth had hair on it. My husbands Tempura zucchini tasted like fish as if they used the same cutting board. The entire time we did not see the usual guy behind the bar making fresh sushi. I actually cried because on our way back home my sons kept telling me it was the worst they ever had. I wanted a nice holiday lunch with my family and I paid over $100. read more

I'm giving this place a 2 star review only because my friends first time trying uni and scallops. Server was ehh ... felt rushed the entire time looking over the menu. For a sushi restaurant they did not have any oysters on the menu; the fish did not taste fresh or at least partially fresh, tasted fishy and left a nasty grimy taste afterwards. I've had sushi at many restaurants and never have I had a fishy aftertaste from eating sushi... not sure if anyone understands but ...Our bill came out to $106. Two sushi rolls, two orders of uni and an order of scallops, a glass of wine and a beer. Seems a little pricy for what we ordered.Would not recommend to anyone I hate. read more

Took my wife to be here on our first date over 10 years ago, it was AMAZING back then I made a great 1st impression with my restaurant choice on that nite...... been coming to Osaka's ever since but not in the last year we don't get many date nites these days with a young child and until last nite it had been over a year since our last adult nite out so we chose Osaka's, first off service was 5 star, martini prawns were good but I thought the sushi rolls we ordered 4 different selections were just ok the best being the fresh eel roll, Unfortunately one of the patrons last nite decided to bring their SICK child with them to dinner, so it was very difficult to carry on o conversation with my wife with all the deep Loud coughing going on 2 tables away it was disappointing to say the least, overall service amazing food ok and ambiance a big fat 0 for the distractions going on around us, We will go again just cause this was always the go to spot I just hope next time is better on are once a year date nite out read more

This place is overpriced and nothing has flavor. I'm willing to spend money at a Japanese restaurant, I know they are usually on the more expensive side. I'm absolutely shocked at these negative reviews! We've always had GREAT servers. We're not sushi eaters, but have martini prawns every time we go there. The sauce is so amazing I actually bought a bottle of it to take home. The prawns are always my entree. The edamame is very fresh and quite wonderful. I can't rave enough about the bananas tempura! I never liked cooked bananas before, but with this dessert I'm always tempted to lick the plate. Just the dessert is worth stopping for. I've never had even the tiniest negative experience there! I'm sight impaired, and they always take the time to cut the banana for me before it's served. They always remember that it's hard for me to get the martini prawns out of a martini glass, so they serve it on a plate for me. Paid a visit to Osake which is sort of in the middle of nowhere, but goodness, I hope the locals know what a gem of a restaurant they have. I came in between lunch and dinner hours, so I was able to sit and have a nice conversation with the chef. Chef Gary is an amazing person and his stories were incredible! It's very clear in our conversation that he loves food and he loves to get creative with his inventions. If you're coming here and just ordering rolls and plates of sushi, it'll be good, but you're missing out on the REAL stuff. Chef Gary uses some of the finest ingredients and incorporates them into his own unique style. Order omakase and let him take you on an adventure. I could go on for days about his personality and what a great guy he is, but let the man's food speak for itself. Note: Because I just had Chef Gary continue to serve me food without specifically ordering anything, I'll do my best to remember everything that he served me. 1. King Crab on top of asparagus with this yellow sauce. The crab was sweet and cold while the asparagus was warm and bitter, talk about contrast. What a great opening dish and the tartness of the yellow sauce was great preparation for what followed. 2. Next up, scallops on a half oyster shell with grated parmesan cheese. This is where I saw Chef Gary take risks. If you know Italian cuisine, putting seafood and cheese on the same dish is a SIN. Well, guess what? Chef Gary is a badass rule breaker and he just served up scallops with parmesan cheese. Scallops were perfectly moist and tender, but the real highlight of the dish was its presentation. Absolutely beautiful oyster shells and the dish came on fire. Not only were the flames beautiful, but also it helped release the aroma of the cheese. I should also mention the sizzling was ear candy. In one simple dish, Chef Gary appeals to all 5 of your senses (in order): sight, smell, sound, taste, feel/texture. 3. Black cod with a sweet Korean gochujang (red pepper) sauce. Not a huge fan of black cod, but my goodness, this was the most tender piece of black cod I've had. Side story: If I had to be honest, I walked in hoping to just get a bunch of great pieces of your typical salmon, tuna, and yellowtail. Thank you Chef Gary for showing me that sushi isn't just about raw fish. (It really isn't, if you do a deeper historial study on sushi) I will take his cooked black cod over any piece of salmon. 4. Hamachi carpaccio. Very classic, simple dish. There's not much to comment besides that the pieces of hamachi (yellowtail) served were excellent. 5. I don't know what to call this next one, but it was like poke made out of tuna and avocados, with a mayo drizzle and a garnish made out of tangerines. I don't know how to describe it, you just gotta watch the video. It's unique and nothing like I've ever tasted. LOL. 6. Halibut sashimi with mixed greens, parmesan cheese, caviar, and a pesto drizzle. At this point, I'm just like, mind blown. Never would I have imagined a dish like this at a sushi restaurant. In this dish, you can see and taste a heavy western inspiration. I felt like it was just going to taste like a salad with pieces of raw fish, but Chef Gary's choice of halibut nailed it. These are subtle choices that we don't even pay attention to, but I'm sure the Chef carefully and intentionally picked halibut for this dish. 7. For my last entrée, Chef Gary made me "The Universe," which he claims is his best invention yet. I won't spoil the story too much because it was really fun listening to the chef tell it, but basically it's four pieces of sushi, representing the universe. First piece was a Bluefin tuna with caviar and truffle oil. I hate seeing "truffle oil" on the menu... UNLESS it's actual real truffle oil, and what do you know, Chef Gary only uses the best stuff. Then you get kobe beef... warm, savory, tender. Then foie gras, packed with flavor and superrrrr fatty. Then you end it with a delicate salmon tartare. Then you take a moment to let all that just sink in... ahh.. 8. This was totally unexpected but Chef Gary ended the meal with candied figs with a 15-year-old balsamic vinegar reduction as dessert. I could've just had the balsamic vinegar because it was so good, but the figs were perfect. Strangely, I was thinking about figs a few days before. Folks, what I've just described isn't found in recipe books. These are Chef Gary's own inventions and draw inspiration from a mix of Japanese and western European cuisine... definitely a lot of French cuisine. I don't know any other sushi restaurant that does this, so it speaks volumes about Chef Gary's creativity and his daring audacity to try something new. He puts his reputation on the line to achieve something greater and because of that he has won my respect. read more

I left a tip hoping it is split with the buses, because they did more than our waiter...Food was only marginal and small small portions. bill was $115.00 and we actually left hungry. Okay, uh, I realized ... have I never written a review of this place? Impossible! Ack! But yeah, reality. Anyway, order Utah roll. Order Utah roll. Yes it keeps raising in price (last time I went it was $16) but OMG! Crab, unagi sauce, shrimp tempura, crunch, crunch, num num. So totally to die for and not on the menu. Eh ha! Secret is out! Otherwise, I do love this place. The price point is a little high but the food is always good. The everything is good. Every carpaccio is delish! I don't use delish often so consider that above and beyond. Wagyu beef is used in their teriyaki beef dish. Are you kidding? The beef is wonderful though the sauce is reminiscent of gloopy cornstarch like Chinese counterpart [hence 4 stars instead of 5; sometimes it's more like Chinese than Japanese]. Hey, no one is perfect ,though this place comes really close. I usually sit at the bar since Gary himself is there. He's fun to talk with, for the not too shy. Sunomono is wonderful. They give you a choice of topper: shrimp, octopus, or crab ... just like the places in San Francisco. My ultimate favorite here: Sukiyaki. Yes I know this is a house dish that changes with every different restaurant. But I crave this one. I'm not that big of a fan of tofu and the tofu in this dish has won me over. The light broth that is slightly sweet .... mmmmm I could go on for hours. If it's cold out, this is a definite must eat. It's served in a clay pot steaming just the way it always should be. And yes, I've ordered it without the tofu and it's just not the same. Even if I don't eat the tofu the dish needs it to complete the flavor balance. The only real complaint is that it is a little pricey. I once spent almost $100 dollars for two on *gasp* lunch. It was likely worth it since I tend to over order at this place since I see sooooooo much good food. But hey, I'm only human. I also like to sit at the bar since I can watch the fish. And well, people watch, as they come in the front door. Plus service is way faster. So if you go for lunch and only have your one hour. That's the place to sit. Another note: I don't like the martini prawns since I'm not a mayo fan. I like my prawns with vinegar tomato based cocktail sauce. Each to their own I like to say! I've taken tons of friends from out of town who love Japanese, but now I live much more south of Santa Rosa so we tend to go to Sushiko. It's got a bit lower price point, and a little closer to me. One star! One star... I've only given one other place one star in my yelping career. This is almost solely due to the service. Osake is the best sushi in Santa Rosa BUT for the price and service, not worth it. Here's why: We waited 15 minutes to even get acknowledged we were actually sitting at a table. Our server came up, seemingly flustered and said "oh you must have been looking for me!"... yes, yes we were. We ordered our food and she went on her way. We ordered miso, appetizers and rolls... you would think the food would come in that order... just the opposite. Weird? Yes. We ordered drinks as well. My husband ordered a beer, she sat it down and said "here is your root beer sir"... simple mistake, ok. She brought our rolls and asked if these were the rolls we ordered. She took the order, shouldn't she know?! Miso came, Gyoza came, which was luke warm at best. Most gyoza we get is too hot to even eat right away so this was alarming. We've eaten what we ordered and my husband is still hungry, once we finally flag her down he asked for a menu because he wants to order another roll. Her reaction? Dismay, she seem pissed actually. I'm sorry we want to order more food, this is a restaurant, correct? Ok, now for the big kicker. I'm still laughing. Since we were having such a hard time getting our server's attention I ask the busser to let our server know we were done and would like the check. He said ok only to come back 5 minutes later and tell us she was "busy" and could not bring our check. Busy! Ok, we'll just be too busy to pay then. If I were you I would go to Shogun. LOVE this place. Every time I am in Santa Rosa, I make up an excuse to eat here. Only rolls I can remember off the top of my head are California, Marilyn Monroll, Caterpillar, Rainbow & Spider, but all were fantastic. The martini shrimp are to die for. I don't even like spicy stuff, but I will suck it up for these tasty shrimp. My friends (who had never been here before) were in love with these things. Shumai, chicken teriyaki are also great. I don't even know what my past dining companions have ordered, but everyone thought it was awesome. Last time I was there, service was a little slow. Osake has become my go to sushi restaurant in Santa Rosa. I have tried several others in the county but they fail to live up to Osake's standards. For starters order the spicy green beans. They are fresh and crisp and coated with the most delicious spicy sauce. If you get nothing else to start you have to get an order of the martini prawns. They are amazing!! Four delicious prawns atop a bed of shredded carrot strings drenched in an amazing spicy sauce in a martini glass. I usually get at least one order but order 2-3 if you have a large party. Ask for the Marilyn Monroe roll (not normally on the menu) but they will make it for you. You will not be disappointed. Ambiance could be a little better but with the food taking center stage you won't even be paying attention. Osake is a must have on your top Sushi restaurants in Sonoma County. read more

Gary. Your food is good. Delicious even. And the presentation? Beautiful. I've never had a bad meal, but the prices are sometimes... a little much. I'll get over it. That's my only problem with Osake. The sushi bar is quite elegant, and the only place to sit if you go here. The menu is standard with some nice touches, and while I'm all for innovation, some of the items reach into the "weird-fancy" area. Every one of the "special" rolls seem to have jalapenos or mayonnaise or corn dogs or osso bucco inside. I made up those last two. Careful ordering from the sushi bar when you aren't holding a menu. You will get what you ordered, but I guarantee you will be shocked at the price. I once ordered Toro and assumed it would be no more than $15 dollars. It was $30 for four medium sized pieces. Really? Again, this place makes DELICIOUS food; the Tempura and the Battayaki are fantastic, and the fish is nice and fresh. Having said that, a similar if not equal meal can be had for less at a few other places in town. Consider the higher-prices an atmosphere tax. And you DO get to watch the Amazing Gary at work... Osake is generally pretty solid. Good sushi that is usually pretty fresh, excellent service, decent atmosphere. Price-wise, it's about where it needs to be. My coworker always gets the Utah roll which is wonderful. I like some roll (can't remember the name) that involves yellowtail and mango. Mmmmmm.... Of course, there are the martini prawns. I don't get those every time I go there, but maybe every third time or so. They are super rich, super delicious, and super addictive. They also sell the sauce now and I've purchased it a couple times and made martini prawns at home. Of COURSE it's not quite the same- with my Have gotten takeout from there on occasion and it's not their strong suit. Focus will be on eating there in person from now on. Great place for lunch. Always packed and you can always get out of there quickly if you are so inclined. Oh, and owner Gary Chu is almost always there- which is quite charming. My Sweetie and I had high expectations for this restaurant after reading most of the reviews and hearing personal buzz. Upon arriving at 8:00pm, there was a 10 minute wait, not wholly unexpected. While seated in the comfortable waiting area, we had time to observe the fish tank near the entrance. We could not help feeling sorry the huge beautiful koi encased in a tank much too small. After being seated, we had a better view of the restaurant decor. Nice, with fresh flowers on the table, but the large art piece on the wall behind the sushi bar had Chinese tendencies. The food was very disappointing; the misoshiru was too salty with chewy tofu that tasted old, too much vinegar in the salad dressing; the Dragon roll sushi was meh, probably because of the rice, and the shumai were tasteless. We had to add shoyu, but there were no sauce plates at the table. i ordered the beef teriyaki which was grilled and cut into small pieces covered with good sauce, the best part of my meal. Thankfully the portion was very generous, but the rice was dreadful. Sweetie ordered Unajuu. The unagi and sauce were okay, but lacked grilled flavor. But just like my dish, the rice was terrible, hard, separate, and just wrong. (She is Japanese.) The food was served in a box instead of a bowl which made eating even more difficult for her. She tried for a while and eventually gave up. The service was good--although there was a ten minute time lapse from when I received my main dish and when Sweetie got hers. The food was average - 2 stars - BUT, this food isn't really Japanese. Many of the dishes are more Chinese in style. We are a Chinese/Japanese family, and are accustomed to the restaurants in the San Francisco and L.A. area that offer a more traditional Japanese menu. The food was extremely expensive for the quantity, but it may be that there are so few Japanese restaurants, that they feel they can charge so much. There wasn't anything notable - no standouts good or bad. The reason I didn't give it a 2-star ("I've had better") is the service. I don't think we've ever experienced such RUDE service in a restaurant. Was it because we were Asian? Was it because we asked questions about dishes that would be suitable for our family members with life-threatening allergies? We weren't rude or demanding, and my only regret is that we didn't confront them about the rude, pony-tailed male waiter. He answered our questions in the rudest, most condescending manner, and barely made eye contact. There wasn't a hint of graciousness in his behavior. Let me make this an easy review. Pros: Martini Prawns are good (not outstanding but good). Nigiri sushi is fresh. Cons: CRAPPY and I mean CRAPPY, slow service. My 6 year old would've been a more tentative waiter. Had to ask for drink refills as well as the appetizer he forgot. This Mr. Ponytail Waiter already had a reputation here on Yelp & let me tell you, other patrons were right on target with it! Also had to ask to order dessert. WTH? They ALWAYS are supposed to ask you about dessert as it ups the bill! The maki rolls were not wrapped very tight and our carburetor roll fell apart right after picking a piece up. The menu says crab came in the roll but it is really imitation crab. For the price you pay for the food here, it should have been real crab or should have been stated on the menu that it was not. For the price of the food, you didn't get very much and the quality was not up to par as well. A place that I was told was excellent ( I guess it might have been a long time ago) is sadly not living up to its reputation. A friend had a joke calling it OSucky's and I couldn't agree more! A couple of years ago, this was a favorite place of mine. Its still good, although I love love sappuro. Came here when a friend was visiting from texas who had no idea what 'real' sushi was, and in that regard it certainly didn't disappoint. The good part about this place is that they have a large back room for parties. I have been here for this, and large party or no, we had good service. The asian carpaccio is pretty nifty. (usu zu kuri) and runs about 17.50 for any of the orders. Not traditional, but interesting use of fish. I usually opt for this as my starter. I also tend to order the poke salad here, light on the dressing, decent amount of fish, and always fresh and nicely chunked ($11) The Uni is good, (7.00) nice chunks of sea urchin. The spicy Tuna roll is (mashed!!!) but decent for flavor and spice, still I don't like my tuna mushy. ($7.00) I have had the lamb ($6) here a time or two - yes, not tyypically something I think about ordering in a Japanese restaurant, but it's decent. I also dig the healthy style of cooking, no preservatives - which says something about the quality and freshness in my mind. read more

While visiting my friend in Santa Rosa, we came here for dinner after a wonderful day full of wine tasting, so needless to say we did not need to order any drinks. It was the perfect, light yet delectable meal to reminisce on our day.... We order a few rolls to share as well as some items from the small plates menu: *Crab Tacos - fresh & delish! I love what the sweet corn adds to this dish *Miso Black Cod - always a fave wherever I go, as long as it's done right, it's worth it and this was! *Crunchy Spicy Tuna Roll - I always love a touch of heat! *Cowboy Roll - yum! Carnivores like myself will love this, stuffed with grilled beef, cucumber and teriyaki. So savory and unique! *Negihama Roll - Yellowtail with scallion and lemon rind for bright flavor; never would have thought of this but lemon and seafood go hand and hand so why not!?! Presentation was great and the service was quick and attentive as well! Since we were already buzzed from our day, we ordered no alcohol which meant a very reasonable bill. The word that comes to mind when I think of Osake is pretentious. Way overpriced and completely over the top. Simplicity goes a long way, and I think Osake focuses more on presentation and drowning everything in sweet or spicy sauces, rather than serving simply made sushi. At least, that was my experience... I ordered the martini prawns, the horizon roll and the stuffed mushrooms. The martini prawns were pretty good, although drowned in so much of the spicy aoli sauce that it's hard to taste anything else. The horizon roll was essentially a shrimp tempura roll served with a curry mayo sauce and "drizzled" with soy honey. The roll was stacked rather than laid out across the plate, making each piece of sushi stick together. Trying to grab one piece was near impossible since they clumped together into one, mushy lump of rice. The majority of my plate was filled with a massive puddle of the curry mayo and honey...so much of it I needed about 20 more of the horizon rolls to sop up what was on my plate. The mushrooms were stuffed with crab salad, avocado and jalapenos, fried, and in a shallow bowl atop another puddle of overly sweet sauce. The flavor of the mushrooms were okay, nothing special really. It was hard to taste any flavors other than the sweet sauce seeing as the mushrooms had soaked up a lot of the sauce they were placed on top of. Not impressed, Osake. Guess I should have asked for the bowl of sauce on the side so I could actually taste the sushi. I wish that I could rave about this place like everyone else seems to, but it just didn't do it for me. The prices are ridiculous and the service was pretty awful as well. I don't think I'll be going back to Osake next time I have a hankering for some good sushi. Another reviewer mentioned Kyoto for great sushi, and I couldn't agree more! That place is reasonably priced and delivers with authentic flavor and freshness. Thankfully Sonoma County does not lack in great sushi restaurants to dine at, but this ain't one of them. read more

2 words: Martini. Prawns. Seriously, the sauce they come in, with the string carrots and warm shrimp, is just absolutely to die for. Sit at the bar and chat it up with Gary, he's got his routine down and he'll charm you if you let him with his creative presentations and infectious laugh. All while he cracks the goddamn whip on his employees! Go Gary. I have come here several times with groups and we've always loved it, the overflowing sake servings, awesome wall decor and beautiful fish tank all absolutely do it for me. I'm giving this place an extra star because I fell in love with the Horizon Roll (Prawn tempura roll w/curry mayo sauce) after thinking I wasn't going to enjoy it a bit. Me and curry is an iffy situation. But with that touch of that curry mayo sauce, it was different and not your usually sauce that most places top their sushis with. I could've eaten the whole thing if it weren't for my friend who I was sharing with. We had gotten there just in time before the mad rush of Friday dinner seekers. This was my 2nd or 3rd time here and I remember the Martini Prawns were a must. But decided to not order that this time around. Instead we had 2 more rolls: Tokyo Tower (that was alright), and the Spider Roll (which disappointed me big time). There was something about the taste on the Spider Roll that made me frown. I will return though...this time to try out their desserts. read more

The decor is modern, clean, open, sophisticated. Service. Our party of three sat at the bar. Service was excellent. Quick, but not too fast. The food was excellent. We ordered two appetizers, three rolls and one sashimi plate. Appetizers were martini prawns and crab stuffed mushroom. The rolls were Angel Roll, the Caterpillar and the Utah Roll. My wife travels all over the country, Hawaii included, and she says the Caterpillar Roll is the best she's ever had! It was delicate and succulent. The sashimi was super fresh, rich and wholly satisfying. The whole meal was wonderfully tasty. The bill was normal for sushi, pricy but expected, worth every dime. We may go back for dinner tomorrow. read more

Decor: Fun and upbeat, though the cliche giant fish tank next to the sign that roughly says "we are trying to save on water, if you want some just ask" is a bit out of place.. Service: Meh, depends on what time you go.. but we always seem to get some less than cautious server who seems to be reeling from some earlier rush regardless of how few people are currently in the restaurant.. Food: Well, its the only reason I go to Osakes. Its the best sushi in Sonoma County. Period. Not just the best, but you get the most amount too. I can't go anywhere else now for sushi.. Part of the reason why I like this place is because they have a gigantic fish tank full of fancy koi (that are actually healthy and not diseased with one eye ball like most places that decide to have fish). They take care of their fish = they will take care of my food. Which is good food (I like the chicken katsu and the crispy mushrooms). Oh and Martini Prawns, duh. read more

Hard to believe that this place made The Michelin guide! Upon arrival we noticed a BMW SUV with GARYCHU as The license plate taking up prime parking near front door, meanwhile we had to walk in the rain to enter. We were seated promptly in a nice half booth with a friendly (though dusty) geisha girl facade. When we both ordered the same thing, a pair of beef teriyaki and tempura bento lunchboxes, the foodserver/ordertaker told me it was a very good choice and then turned to my companion and told her "Oh no, you don't want that, you want the lemon chicken and calfornia roll." We reaffirmed our desires after being taken a little aback. Then we asked for a crispy mushroom starter which we were quickly admonished was not as popular as the martini prawns, so to this, we assented. Upon arrival our miso was nice and hot as was the tempura in our bento boxes, however the beef teriyaki was cold to say the best and the rice was cold and crusty as well. When my companion notified the server she was very apologetic and shocked offering to heat the food for us. I declined the reheat while my girl accepted. The server then returned with a plate and spoon to scoop up the tepid beef rather than taking the whole box away as I would have expected. less than a minute later the lady returned with a steaming plate of surely microwaved meat which still had the lettuce garnish in it, now wilted and steaming as well. About midway through our meal we were greeted by the acrid smell of burning fish and moments later a cloudy haze descended upon the dining room. A final straw, for me, was that we were given the check at the end of the meal, without any changes( when less renowned establishments might have comped some or all of the cold lunch). read more
