WORST HIBACHI I HAVE EVER HAD!!! I understand as a first week opening there are certain exceptions to lengthy waits and customer service as all staff are in a training process. I enjoyed the atmosphere, however was met by a hostess who didn't smile, didn't make eye contact or acknowledge us. Instead she helped those currently waiting and eventually asked us, "how many". Once we were sat, it took more than 20 minutes before any server came to us (keep in mind we had waited 10 minutes at the door) and when she did, no introduction, no smile, just an explanation of how she would be bringing us water and be right back. I asked if the hot tea was decaffeinated (as I am not supposed to have caffeine). I was told she was going to let me know. 10 minutes later we were brought our drinks, including a tea that I didn't order with no answer to my question. While waiting my husband drew back his arm to find it covered in a sauce left over from a previous patron and find it all over the inside back of his chair, arm and shirt. Our table was only half wiped off with sauce spills and grease from the earlier sitters. I moved my foot to find there was food crammed under my seat, as well as a dirty napkin! Then, I went to use the restroom and saw that my entire back was covered with someone else rice!!!! By now I was about to leave except we got our salads and I was hungry. Little did I know it would be another 40 minutes before I got my soup...upon request...after 3 people at my table had already gotten theirs (leaving 6 of us waiting), and during the cooking of our hibachi. We started to run out of room so we ended up busing our own table and placing our used dishes on the neighboring dirty one. There was never once a server who came and asked about refills or if we needed anything. Not once during the entire meal. We were ALL remarking how thirsty we were. After ALL of us were done eating it took another 20 minutes to have my husband watching the TV and the server lean from a neighboring table and yell to him, "I'll be over after getting their order". Completely rude. My experience was one like I have never had before and I wish I had gone to McDonalds. I understand that there are kinks to be worked out upon opening but this was inexcusable. It was disgusting and took 2 1/2 hours for a horrible experience. Terrible customer service and horrible sanitation! read more

Good food, but my family and I have gotten horrible food poisoning both times. So bad - couldn't make it to the bathroom in time.

A must stop if your staying in the area. We stay just down the road from here when flying out of Grand Rapids. The steak, rice, noodles, and shrimp tempura are all awesome. There is plenty of food and you won't walk away hungry. Next time I will try the sushi. read more

Perhaps one of the worst Asian dining experience ever! When we arrived at the front counter the hostess spoke Chinese to us. This is a Japanese rest? Okay that wasn't the bad part. We decided to Shabu and the stove was filled with grim, stale food from previous diners and filth. It was really disgusting to eat with that amount of bacteria. Anyway when the food arrived, most of it was still frozen and aged. We both got sick the following day and thought about contacting Health department but decided not to for the sake of troublesome. read more

Someone told me that Osaka had some of the best sushi in GR. Sorry, I totally disagree. It was OK, but I've certainly had much better.

I'd just like to say that this was my first hibachi experience, and the atmosphere was very good. Our chef was fun, talkative, and skillful. The food was quite delicious. Something about the service was just OFF. I ordered a beer and our server asked if I wanted "Big or Small", 16oz or 22oz, respectively. I defiitely said SMALL. He brought a large. Later he came around and showed our whole table a live scallop, just to show us. He explained that since it was out of the water, it was dying, so he asked if any of us wanted to "try it". I was feeling adventurous, it was my birthday, and since he offered so casually, I saw nothing wrong with 'trying it'... ya know - because it was dying anyways. Fast forward to the check. .. BOOM... $17.50 for a live scallop. I'm sorry, but this server could have made it a LOT more clear that I wasn't just trying a scallop because it was dying, I was purchasing ONE scallop for the price of another entire entree... Un-real! We spoke with him about it, and he said the manager agreed to charge us only $8. Their sneaky up-sells are enough for me to write a review. So know that the food is good but they'll charge you more with every chance. read more

I tried half off sushi at Osaka for the first time last night. I got there pretty early, as I knew it would probably get busy quickly. My friend and I split about 6-7 rolls (mostly specialty rolls) and all of them were great! I would say it's definitely on par with the quality at Fujiyama (where I also love to go for half off sushi!). The fish all tasted fresh and the rolls were all pretty flavorful. They are a little on the smaller side, though, so be aware of that. (Similar size or a bit smaller than Fujiyama.) Our server was pretty good, she got slowed down a bit as it got busier there but that's to be expected! I will probably go back again for half off! The sashimi there is some of the cheapest I've found ($4-$5 for 3 pieces of sashimi). It is not included in the 1/2 off deal. All rolls are included though (even specialty rolls), unlike Fujiyama where you can only order certain ones and get half off. I liked that. read more

You have to lower your expectations for 50% off sushi at lunch. I ordered hot tea and got hot water and a tea bag, not bad, but not great either. The miso soup was lukewarm at best, and one piece of tofu was cold. Maybe the soup is kept frozen and warmed in the microwave? Probably could have used another 30 seconds. There were 12 dishes for soy sauce on the table when I sat down, the fourth one I turned over was clean. The sushi itself was not great. Rice was a little undercooked. Don't think I'll be back to this one. The price is super cheap, but you get what you pay for. Feel bad for the poor bastards that go tomorrow and pay full price. read more

My roommate and I visited Osaka for the first time on Monday (1/19/15) while they had a special for 50% off sushi. It was relatively busy and we had to park next door at Applebee's. We waited around 20 minutes for a table to open up, which was understandable considering the special. However, we were left to stand awkwardly by the door as there is little seating to wait at and the bar only seats about 8 and was full. When we were shown to our table, the hostess quickly rushed off after telling us our server would be right with us. This would prove to be false. At this point my roommate and I were ravenous, and we quickly decided on the drinks and appetizers we wanted. However, no one came to take those orders. As we sat there looking over the sushi menu (which looked pretty standard and at that point we could have eaten everything on it) we watched as 3 or 4 other tables were seated and subsequently served drinks and had their orders taken. We overheard the waitress tell some customers that there was a longer than usual wait for the sushi, and we saw that the majority of tables in our section had not yet been served their food, and many customers seemed annoyed by the lack of service. At least they had drinks. My roommate noticed that each time a waitress came by our table, they would look at us, and we tried calling and signalling them to our table, however they just gave us funny looks and went about their business. I tend to be overly polite and shy away from confrontation, however the breaking point was reached when two of the tables that were seated after us received their food, and we hadn't even gotten water. I loudly and uncharacteristically called out "excuse me" to a waitress, she turned and looked at us, almost frightened, but continued walking away. I don't know if there was some confusion or what, but we had been in that restaurant for a hour and hadn't been offered so much as a glass of water. Any one of the watresses that passed by us could have seen our closed menus and lack of drinks and asked if we needed service. But no, just awkward glances made in passing and an apparent misunderstanding of the American custom of raising a hand to signal for service. As we grabbed our coats and left, I advised the hostess and any other staff that happened to be listening that their customer service was seriously lacking and we both promised to give an honest review of our experience on Yelp. Since we wasted an hour at Osaka and experienced dreadful service without even having the opportunity to sample the food, I'm giving them the lowest possible score. This rating may change if by some miracle I am ever persuaded to return and actually try the food. After that we walked over to Applebee's and had a few drinks and a mediocre meal that was at least served quickly and courteously. read more

I've had Sushi & Shabu all over the US and Japan and I love this place. The service is courteous and quick. I love the Jalepeno roll. The Shabu chef was a riot! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones based in the other reviews but I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here. I ordered the sashimi deluxe along with some toro and the presentation was awesome. I sat at the sushi bar and chatted with one of the chefs who was quite knowledgable. Service was great and prompt although my waiter had a strong Accent and was a bit hard to understand at times but I give him an A for effort. Sushi was very fresh and tasty. This place is not authentic Japanese restaurant. Mainland chinese running it. Hibachi is chinese food and pass it on as Japanese. Hibachi food if very salty. You will need to drink alot of water for this meal. Cheap soy sauce ( water and salt ) in fry rice. Meijer 1 dollar spaghetti noodles was used in hibachi and water down salad dressing. Dinner box or Bento this is a joke. It has chinese egg roll , Shumai , sweet carrot from can. IT got thai sweet chili sauce all over it. The chicken , beef , shrimp and salmon grill and coated with honey sauce. Now you wonder why they come out so fast. The food is frozen and can they just precooked it . shabu-shabu --- you will need to order more water. It got ton of MSG in it soup base. It is not the real stuff. I will never eat at this place. Stopped by this restaurant while staying overnight in Grand Rapids on a roadtrip. It was a chilly night, so I ordered the seafood shabu-shabu (hot pot) and appreciated that they served authentic ingredients (heads-on shrimp, napa cabbage, enoki mushrooms, kamaboko fish cake, lotus root). My only gripe about the shabu-shabu is that the soup broth is far too salty. They probably used chicken broth with high sodium content. I ended up not drinking the soup at the end, which is somewhat wasteful, but I did eat all of the main ingredients. This place also serves teppanyaki, which many establishments turn into a show for the chefs to entertain the customers. The chefs are quite boisterous (read: loud) so I wasn't able to eat my meal in peace and quiet. Other than that, I thought they served good shabu-shabu. read more

The only reason I am giving this place 3 stars is because I liked their sushi (on Wednesday when it's half off). The sushi was good and I would most likely go back again. Probably only on half off day though. The service, however, was not good at all. We waited forever for our bill and when we finally got it the waiter had added two things that we didn't order. I would only go back because I like cheap sushi. I would just hope for better service next time. read more

Went on a normal night, so I can not speak for the half off sushi, though that does sound great. I was pleasantly surprised that the draft beers were only $2 a pint on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Additionally, the hand roll was pretty good and reasonably priced. The specialty rolls were a complete rip off. They were very small and underwhelming. Very disappointing. I didn't think it was as bad as others thought. The service was okay.. wasn't horrible or great though. I ordered the Hibachi chicken even though I didn't do the Hibachi Tables. I definitely think Fuji Yama is much better than this place. I could hear the Hibachi chef singing "This Girl Is On Fire" as a joke during a hibachi table session. I thought this was pretty clever. So far so good, my husband and I have visited this restaurant twice this month. Half off sushi on Mondays and Wednesday which is amazing! The sushi is good, I have tasted better but I feel that it is still good enough to come back. I have not yet tried the Hibachi part, but it looks great! Service is great, attentive and friendly servers. Great selection of sushi. The wasabi taste a bit diluted, not as spicy as expected. Generous portions of sushi and very nice presentation. My favorite hibachi place in Grand Rapids after having dinner here for Valentine's Day. The noodles are delicious !!! Much better than the hibachi place on 29th st and much better prices. This restaurant was suggested to me by my sister in law so I thought I would give it a try. The hostess and the waitress were very nice and attentive to my needs. I ordered the Bento box dinner and it was OK. The food was lukewarm and did not taste too great. The Yaki Mandu and Shrimp Tempura was great but everything else was so so. I'm willing to give it another try but I will get something else or just have the sushi. read more

The best sushi around that I've been to. I have been to XO and Fujiyama, as well as multiple little places around downtown and the Beltline. The half off Monday and Wednesday sushi is great, the tea is my favorite and you can't beat the Osaka roll. Their hibachi isn't bad either. Only thing I can complain on is service is a little slow, even on nights when there is hardly anyone there. Or like one time it felt like we were being pushed out of the place and there was no one else there. Still, I love the place and will always come back. The wife loves their fried rice! read more

Looking for 3 great Japanese eats all under one roof? Osaka has it all. Great sushi - They have an experienced sushi chef that worked in New York City for over 10 years. We tried several of the different sushi offerings. It's fresh and has beautiful plating. Hibachi / Teppanyaki - it's dinner and a show! The chef cooks on a large hot griddle right at your table. My kids love it - the fire work and smoking onion volcano. They make yummy fried rice and vegetables(more than other hibachi places in town) along with your choice of meat or seafood. Delicious! They also have Shabu shabu, hot pot cooking. You cook thinly sliced meat and veggies in a broth and eat it with various dipping sauces. Then the broth you've been flavoring with meat/veggies is eaten at the end with rice. Yum! Each person get's their own individual hot pot, so meat eaters and vegans can enjoy their meal all at one table. Their decor is nice and upscale, great place to take a family or a date. I think they needed to work out some kinks with service and such when they opened, but now it's all working better and the food is great. read more

I love this place! I am a big fan of sushi and sashimi and they did both great! The service was great as well. I found a bone in my sashimi once but the other times have been great! I am especially grateful for them suggesting that I dip my sushi in hibachi sauce because it is excellent!!! I don't think can have it any other way now. read more

The food here was great. We love hibachi and this was our first time here but unfortunately despite the good food we will most likely not return.The service was terrible. A drink order was placed but took forever to arrive. Water glasses were not refilled and soup and salad dishes were never cleared away. I'm an out of town traveler and this restaurant was recommended to me by a local business owner. I LOVED it! I arrive late with a colleague - after 8pm and the hostess was as cute, nice and accommodating as can be. She sat us at a hibachi grill table even though there were only 2 of us. Eric was fantastic as our hibachi chef - fun, exciting and great all around. we both really enjoyed our experience with Eric and would ask for him again (and will). The sushi was GREAT and the seafood dinners we got for the hibachi grill: shrimp, scallops and lobster - were fresh and prepared perfect. The boyfriend and I went Friday at 7pm. We made a reservation on the Hibachi side, but it wasn't necessarily as busy as we thought and that was nice. The atmosphere was fun and warm, with a few tables going at a time. I have dined at a Hibachi style restaurant in Saginaw called Genji, and it was very similar. The food was wonderful! Included with our choice of meat entree, was the Miso soup, a small salad with a peanut-like ginger dressing, Hibachi fried rice, veggies and noodles. The chef's do a good job of portioning the food evenly, and the Yum Yum sauce was the best! The service was pretty good, and when the bill came I thought it was reasonably priced for the amount of food/entertainment provided. I highly recommend looking up a Groupon if it is still valid, and I do hope you give this place a try if you haven't already :) read more

Pay no attention to the nit pickers, this place is really good for what it costs. My wife and I had a bottle of hot sake, 1 drink each with our dinner, 2 appetizers, 2 nice entrees and an side order of sea scallops and it cost $80. Our server was very friendly and entertaining and gave us plenty of attention. We were there on a Friday night around 6PM so it was fairly busy and everything stayed on par. This is not a life changing experience when it comes to Japanese restaurants but it is a good place. read more
