I love going to Osaka whenever I'm craving some Japanese food. I love their beef fried rice and their crab rangoons. Service is usually pretty quick even though they get busy on weekends for dinner. Haven't tried the hibachi side of the restaurant so i'll have to do that at some point but it's definitely one of my go to restaurants when i'm on 28th street. read more

Used to like this place a lot. However last couple of times it feels like service is going downhill. Tonight was the worst one yet. My wife has celiac and has to order a special meal from the back. Well today, her food never came. We had all of our hibachi dinner and still no food. Now while the waitress apologized, how do you not know the food never came out at all. Then when we tell you about it, it still takes more time. Worst part, we had to package it up to go, but only got 10% off our meal for their royal screw up. And as I write this we have our bill and still no food. Absolutely unacceptable. Good grief. We'll find somewhere else next time. read more

The ambiance in the restaurant was nice, but it being the dog days of summer we decided to eat outside. The service was excellent our waiter was very attentive despite us being outside. Visited Osaka for the hibachi, which was my first time ever eating at this kind of place. Quite fun and charming, with staff that does all the classic tricks you've seen on TV without being too overwhelming. They do a good job of matching your energy, too: other tables were raving much more than ours, and some were more relaxed. I'd been craving sushi for quite a while and surprisingly after asking around this was not a place anyone mentioned. I searched reviews for the locations I'd been told about, but most were average at best, and this one seemed to have a nicer location and look about it, so I chose to come here instead, and boy am I glad I did. The waitstaff were phenomenal, the sushi was amazing, and the prices were surprisingly cheap for the sushi rolls I got. We went as a family to celebrate a birthday dinner. First, the restaurant was freezing like the AC was on in January and then later noticed some workers wearing jackets and winter hats to stay warm. (We never aware if heat was out or not keeping up..) Secondly, we were delayed by chef because someone forgot to preheat the grill and pushed us to wait another 15-30 minutes when we already have been waiting. The food was good, but... ...Service was super slow ...Chef didn't really perform tricks or have good showmanship like we typically see at hibachi grills (he tossed utensils around & lit the grill -- that's it) ...Chef was unclear on who ordered what ...We were short one salmon for our group so had to flag someone down to bring it ...We waited a long time to get take home boxes ...Waited even longer to pay our bill (the server seemed to forget about us) ...Our credit card didn't come back with our receipts (had to hunt it down) The other tables seemed to be enjoying their chefs' performances. Made another trip here recently. Still our top go to for sushi though we miss half off days, burning holes in our pocket book trying all these delicious rolls. We were seated by Sherly who's been there for the longest time and no wonder because she is so great! (We've had hers few times) Extremely friendly, checks in often and thoughtful with getting us to go drink refills if we wanted. The rolls are amazing: boardman is the best and Osaka roll is right there too with so much flavor in every bite! From there we usually mix up and try different rolls but this time I stick with my spicy lovers roll and e we tried the fireworks roll and 28th st roll for the first time and both were pretty good. The consistency in quality has never disappointed us. We usually come for lunch around their opening (11:30) and are in and out within an hour at most (great time to go as it does get busy afternoon and got dinner). Definitely recommend. read more

WeFound Osaka, on a Sunday, while trying to find a place to eat. It reminded us of Jaku, but in a larger building. We had many choices for seating and settled in close to the sushi bar. I got fried rice with shrimp and my lifelong partner had Hibachi. Tasty, but too much sugar and salt in the foods than we like. Servers, especially John, were fabulous. It's a bit dated, dark, and depressing. Darker side is listening to the stories of our other servers, who were not well paid, and felt abused by the ownership, with is owned by a big corporate group. We are open to come back, but only if management makes some corrective positive changes. read more

Was in the mood for sushi and stopped here for supper. They were not too busy so I was seated quickly. The waitress was very attentive to my order and even gave me a recommendation for the warm sake since I was having the sushi roll. I ordered the pork gyoza and the shrimp love roll, which were actually made quite quickly. The food was delicious and went well with the warm sake. We were so happy to find this place! It's connected to a hotel and I almost drove passed it! This hibachi-style restaurant has delicious appetizers including sushi. The sesame dressing for salads was the best I've ever had, and I also tried the fantastic miso soup. The hibachi entree of filet mignon was a bit pricey but the portion size was good. the fried rice impressed, but the chao mein noodles were a bit too oily. I have been here over 20 times in the past year, food is great! My only reason of negative feedback is the food portion when paid for extra. I always order extra rice, and 90% of times I get the same amount then other folks at table who did not order extra rice. A few weeks ago I actually walked out without eating food (but paid) because person on table got a lot more than me and did not order extra rice. This is a disappointment. read more

I would give Osaka a 3/5 stars if we were speaking about food taste. I tried a few different types of sushi here my first time here and did not appreciate the flavors -- very bland. However, I learned that they are half off on Mondays so visited a second time but narrowed down which sushi rolls taste okay. I have since been been here like every other Monday (6 times total?). I always order a couple of rolls of the shrimp tempura ($4-ish on Monday) and veggie roll (~$3 on Monday) with sriracha and sriracha mayo on the side. The service is overall good, the only issue I had was my most recent visit where the waiter did not check up on my table. We had to get up and get our own sriracha/sriracha mayo. (Didn't mind it, but it's definitely good to check up on guests a few minutes after they get there food). read more

Went here on a Monday for dinner with a group of 7 for their 1/2 off sushi rolls. Was seated immediately on the dining side of the resteraunt and was asked what we would like to drink shortly after. Waitress a bit slow through the entire process of refills (none given) , ordering (15~ min) , food wait (20+ minutes) and cashing out (~15 minutes). One of the sushi rolls ordered was also lost so we took that one to go. I personally ordered the Inari (tofu skin) roll, Tiger roll, and Volcano roll. The tiger roll tasted fresh, although the scallop and crab flavors did not come through ~ you would not have known what it was with just taste alone. The Inari roll was small and sweet (expected) and the Volcano roll was different than any other Volcano roll I've had. It looked like a normal roll (Most places have ingredients piled up on top to make it look like a Volcano) but the most surprising fact was that it tasted very bland. All of the ingredients within it blended together and you could not tell what fish/ingredients you were eating...seemed to be a trend for all the 'special' rolls that I ordered. However, the rest of the tables ordered soups , shu mai, dumplings, udon noodles, and bento boxes which were all up to their expectations. Would give this place another try and perhaps pick some non-sushi items. read more

I had such a great lunch here on Monday. The sushi was 50% off and they were very busy. I don't care for rice very much and they were able to accommodate that and made me two really good rolls. I've been to Osaka exclusively for their sushi, both for dine in and carrot. I quite enjoyed their Eel rolls up to my last visit, as they are quite good. Comparably to "gas station" or premise sushi, Osaka is leaps and bounds better. I quite enjoyed their sushi up and to my last experience. I've noticed that when they are busy or have a lot of orders pending, the food quality decreases a noticeable amount, but that's not how I came to 3/5. The main reason being that Eel, being that it is a fish, naturally has bones that need to be removed. In the case of my last order, it consisting of 85% Eel in one form or another, it would be important that there be no bones (remember these are "pin bones"). In my case, there were bones in every piece of sushi I attempted to eat. Every. One. The sad part was it was a carry out order so there was not much that I could do about it when I tried to eat it at home. $40 in the trash. They were good, and I hope they can be good again, but I am ordering elsewhere in the meantime until I can be confident ordering here again. read more

This is an updated review due to my recent visits to Osaka. I usually come here every Wednesday for the 1/2 off sushi and my experience here is rapidly going downhill.. of corse everyone loves a good sushi deal so that keeps me coming back and location is really convenient for me but slowly but surely I become more and more disappointed. My last 3 visits, my sushi has been rolled atrociously. Its been falling apart before I get to touch it and barely holding together. The service has never been *great* but its been hit or miss between horrible and okay. Usually I ignore that because the restaurant gets uber busy with the 1/2 off sushi but the last 2 times I have gone it hasn't even been busy and I can never seem to find my server and they can never seem to remember to bring you anything when you ask for it.. I'm aware there are better options out there and the 1/2 off sushi is starting not to matter to me at this point because the not so great service and food is definitely outweighing the discount. read more

This establishment is simply amazing! As a frequent business traveler I always seek out the best sushi and hibachi restaurants to try while I am on the road. Osaka is my local favorite and easily in my top 5 out of any of the places that I have frequented in Los Angeles, Manhattan, Miami, and other big cities throughout the U.S. The atmosphere is most excellent and the chefs and wait staff are always very good as well. SUSHI: The sushi is some of the freshest I have ever had and they have a ton of rolls to choose from. Mondays & Wednesdays are 50% of sushi days from open to close. This goes for all of the rolls, even the specialty ones! If you want a local Grand Rapids restaurant for sushi that will rival anything that you will find on Michigan Ave in Chicago or Broadway in Manhattan, this is the place for you! HIBACHI: When you come for Hibachi you must request either Sumo or James as your Chef, you will have the time of your life. Sumo cooks with what he calls a more "southern" flavor. His dishes are always a little sweeter and his fried rice is by far the best I have had yet at a hibachi restaurant. James is the man for a fun family night out. He will serenade you with any top 40 song as he cooks and he also puts on a great show for the kids. People seem to really enjoy him as he is very interactive with the customers. He also will get a little crazy with the adult groups if they are looking to have some saki bombs with dinner. Anytime I am there his tables are always smiling and laughing! MANAGEMENT: One of the owners of the restaurant is Eason. He is usually there no matter the time of day with his wife Ling. They take great pride in the restaurant and the experience that their customers have. You will not go wrong if you decide on this place for your Friday or Saturday night out on the town. Once you try them you will find yourself going back over and over. A final thought. I did take the time to read through the reviews that have been posted on here for Osaka. Unfortunately, there have been a couple of 1 and 2 star reviews. All I can say to that is you can't be perfect all the time. Over the year or so that Osaka has been open I have had the opportunity to speak with Eason on a few occasions. From those conversations I know that any feedback he is given about something that wasn't quite right with the meal or the service is immediately addressed. Even a 5-star restaurant has its nights where things don't click. I can say that this is not the norm for Osaka though. I have never had any complaints and my family frequents the restaurant on a weekly basis. read more

Why You Might Not Like It: Many people have not experienced Shabu/Hot Pot, so you might not know what to expect and may even make a big mess at your table, luckily they give trainer chopsticks so you can't mess it up bc it's like using tongs and all you need to do is squeeze the chopsticks together. You aren't into Asian Fusion restaurants. The sushi I had was wrapped in Vietnamese clear spring roll wrap. I am planning on going back again to try the hibachi and other dishes, especially because it is half off everything this week.
