I recently journeyed to simple fish on a search for a new sushi roll that I like. I got their No-Name Roll and dumplings The no name role is a deep fried roll that is a :Deep fried roll of cream cheese, avocado, crab stick. Eel sauce & spicy mayo. If you're like me and don't care much for raw fish or can't have it this is a perfect alternative. It's also a really good alternative if you're looking to eat something that doesn't constrict with your diet. I also got their dumplings which I believe are pan-fried however they were a little soft and mushy. Their service was on point and the general area wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be due to location. All in all I would give the food an 8/10 Service 8/10 Ambience 8/10 I would definitely come back and get another no name roll read more

I visited Simple Fish on 68th and Division for a late lunch takeout. Upon entering, I noticed the cheerful and inviting atmosphere, enhanced by the decor, artistic elements, and decorative flowers on the tables. The servers were attentive and ready to assist. I ordered takeout and went with the vegetable fried rice and miso soup. It took about 15 minutes for my order to be prepared, which is typical for this place. However, I was disappointed with the fried rice; it was dry and lacked flavor. In the past, I've ordered various sushi and poke dishes, which I highly recommend. I also noticed they recently added bento boxes to the menu, and I think that will be my choice the next time I stop in for a bite to eat. read more

We wanted sushi and this restaurant looked promising based on the ratings. However, it unfortunately was not as great as we thought it would be. Ambiance: clean, modern. They have most tables set up for 2-4 and if you have a larger party, you may want to call ahead to ensure they will have seating for you. Food: unfortunately the sushi rice was basically unseasoned. Minimal vinegar/sushi rice taste. Rice was also very dry- And this permeated to the entire rolls making them quite bland with the main source of flavor being the eel sauce and soy sauce.... I will say I did like my spider roll overall since the soft shell crab was done well - and the crab stick they use does taste good/it was doused in the eel sauce so that helped some - but when the rice is not good, it really ruins the rolls. Service: our server was pleasant, but they're likely under staffed, as it was only one person waiting tables, 2 people making rolls, maybe one? other person making food in the kitchen. It took 20+ minutes to get our rolls with a not very busy/full restaurant. Family friendly: they have high chairs and there is plenty of space in the restaurant. I didn't use the restroom to check out the changing table situation. Value: the prices are fair/on par for casual sushi places, Overall, I am hoping it was just an off night for their rice and speed of service, but it will be a while before we decide to give it a second chance. read more

The fish was fresh and tasted delicious. The specialty roll was excellent. The classic rolls were a little plain in flavor but paired well with some spicy mayo. Lots of options for my friend who doesn't eat raw fish. Lots of customizable options for the poke bowls. I don't personally like cream cheese in my sushi but they seem to have like half of their specialty rolls with it. Waitress was lovely and strangely brought out poke in a to go container, which I'm not mad at but definitely a portion size I finished in the store. Simple Fish has been on my radar since they opened but I don't usually make it that way very often. My boyfriend and I were in the area so we decided to stop in for lunch the other day. The space is pretty large and socially distanced for dining in. They were pretty busy with a lot of takeout orders around lunch time. There was only one other group dining in while we were there. The menu includes appetizers, poke bowls, sushi burritos, entrees, bubble tea, mochi, nigiri/sashimi, classic rolls, and specialty rolls. It's a pretty large menu with lots of great options. We ordered the baked scallop roll, the spicy california roll, bang bang roll, and salmon sashimi. Our server was also acting as food runner, phone answerer, and takeout order manager, so things were a little slow. I was glad that they were busy. I liked that the rolls came out at different times and the menu asks you specifically to eat the sushi as soon as it's served - which I have no problem doing! The bang bang roll was very delicious and similar to a roll we've had at Maru. I loved the cream cheese, although I know that some people don't like it in sushi rolls. The spicy california was your basic roll, nothing super fancy there. The baked scallop roll was always a favorite of mine at a sushi place I frequented in college, and I don't see it that often here in town. It was just as good as I hoped! The baked scallop topping is mixed with kewpie mayonnaise which makes it creamy and delicious. If you don't like seafood salad you'd probably want to skip this one. The warmth is a nice difference too. The salmon sashimi wasn't the best I've ever had, just not as fatty and decadent as some salmon I've eaten. It was still really tasty. I'm glad we got to check out Simple Fish and would definitely stop by again next time I'm in the area. read more

Excellent! Great spot, clean and quiet. Superb service and delicious food. The dining room was done well and very clean. It wasn't busy when my husband and I showed up on a Tuesday evening. There some take out orders coming in and out but the dining room wasn't busy. At one point a couple came in and were greeted by name. I love the idea that there are "regulars" patronizing this lovely little gem. While we waited for our order, we received a small plate of rolls "compliments of the chef"! How fantastic! We tried a couple of traditional rolls and a couple of house rolls as well and all were phenomenal. We will be back soon to try some more of the delicious sounding menu. read more

Just look up their specials that they post on FB. I've tried a handful of the specials and they are always incredible! Plus, they look so beautiful! I used to go here more often when I still worked south of town, though now it is a bit far. I miss it a lot though, and hope to get back soon. The space is so open and inviting, with tons of natural lighting. The hosts at the front register have always been friendly, and helpful. Often I would go on my lunch break, and usually only had a short wait, maybe 10 minutes, for my food to be ready. One time I had to wait longer, but there were a few of us getting multiple orders to go to bring back to our office. Their standard rolls are also great quality, and I've never ordered it, but a coworker really liked the bulgagi she ordered. I definitely recommend them if you like sushi. read more

If I'm being honest, this place is totally deserving of 5 stars. The fish is high quality, and the other ingredients are fresh and tasty. The atmosphere is awesome. The only reason for four stars instead of five is there was some confusion with our call-in order, and I was a litttttle bummed with the sushi burrito. I love the idea of a sushi burrito, but I wasn't expecting the extra filler (spinach and extra rice). What I love about sushi is the consistency from bite to bite, and that is lost with a burrito. Simple fish gets a 2 star. Sadly. I really wanted to like it! TL;DR This should be a TAKEOUT ONLY kind of place. DO NOT DINE IN! The food is pretty decent - Like 3-4 stars - but the service was a horrible 1 star. My husband and I went on a Wednesday night (not a particularly busy night). There was only one guy working the whole restaurant. He had to be host and waiter! And he was not the kind of kid who was ready for a front facing job. He was painfully shy, didn't give us menus or utensils when he sat us, took our drink order after we'd been sitting for 20 minutes and when he did I gave him our full order. It was clear he was overwhelmed and that we probably wouldn't see him again for a while! It was frustrating for everyone. Our table wasn't the only one having to get up to get their utensils and napkins. The poor guy seemed like he was just trying to make it through the night. But that also meant as a diner we were ignored and our soup was cold when it finally came out. Also, the ambiance was stressful. The music playing was too quiet and soft so you could hear everyone's conversations. It felt like eating dinner at a library or spa. It just made the waiter's nervousness that much more awkward. Basically, I would only go back if doing takeout. But honestly, I'm not going to go back. There are too many places in Grand Rapids that actually care about their customers and offer a good experience with better sushi to go back to Simple Fish. TO THE OWNER: If you are too short staffed to deliver a good dining experience then you need to think of alternatives (ie, closed dining and takeout only or changing the style to fast casual = patrons serve themselves.) read more

We were looking for a sushi spot that was open to dining in. Preferably with outdoor seating but considering the cooler weather, sitting inside was ok. Called around and this place was open to dining in! Tables were taken out so everyone is actually more than 6 ft a part when sitting. Staff: Very friendly! Our hostess was our waitress too. Smiles all around, when we entered, during our stay and while we left. Food: All yummy dishes! They gave us a free sushi roll that included 4 peices, a nice surprise! Smoothie style bubble tea was really delish. Environment: clean, simple designs, not overly extravagant or loud. LOVED the music (R&B)! I asked whose playlist it was and it was our waitresses list. What a great new sushi place - I guess it has been around for quite a while and I wasn't even aware of it. It is in a little strip mall, not too hard to find, and it wasn't busy at all on a Friday evening. The service was really good - our server was extremely helpful with any questions we had on the menu. It looks like a nice, new, clean place to dine in, and they have a really cool mural on the wall. We ordered 3 rolls - Green Monster, Solar Flare and a simple Spicy Tuna. All of the sushi was fantastic - it tasted fresh and had some cool flare and sauces with it. We will definitely be getting sushi from here again, and it isn't that far from our house, plus you don't have to drive downtown for it! read more

We stopped by for lunch today and was not impressed by neither the service nor the food. Starting with the service, there were barely anyone here, at one point we're were the only ones here, but our food took almost 35 minutes to come out, one of our dish was made wrong and had to be sent back, there were no sodas in the restaurant but we were still changed sodas, has to get the bills fixed also. The food was a hit and miss, the fried rice was good I'll give it a 4, the chicken kastu was 3.5, California rolls 3.5, Nijiri is about 3. I'm giving them 5 stars for these reasons: Having a restaurant is hard, they are charging the right amount for their food, an amount that hopefully helps the do well. These Byron Center residents can afford this. Their Sushi was excellent, this puts them up there with 3 or 4 places in town, one which costs 4 times as much. One waiter, room full of people, killed it. Coffee not on the menu?, no problem. Over the top service - had me "try" a new sushi the chefs are working on. Seared Salmon. I'll put a picture. Sorry there is no Bulgogi, I inhaled it. Aesthetics - natural light, wood, and leaves on the food for presentation. I love that attention to detail. Not so simple to do what they are doing here. There were a lot of things we wanted to try so we'll have to go back. I ordered a salmon poke bowl and tried several of their sauces (eel, ponzu, dragon and spicy Mayo) All were really good. I ended up mixing the eel sauce and dragon sauce and it was DELICIOUS. I also asked for them to add tempura flakes for some crunch. My partner ordered sushi: spicy tuna, Dragon roll, Samurai roll and the baked scallop roll. He loved them all. His favorite was the baked scallop roll. I tried his rolls and my favorite was the Samurai roll (I love salmon.) Prices are reasonable. There are some pricey menu items as there usually are at sushi places but you can definitely keep the bill reasonable by choosing some of their equally delicious lower dollar amount options. Simple fish is a one stop shop for everything I love. Their bubble tea is SO good. I got the Taro flavor which is purple in color and a rather unique flavor to see for bubble tea options. I also got a spicy California roll which I was glad to hear they had soy bean paper available for their sushi because that is the way I prefer to eat my sushi. I also got a house roll which was a good portion and flavorful. The fried gyozas came with a nice tangy savory sauce which I enjoyed as well. They also have sushi burritos, poke bowls, and some of my favorite Korean dishes like Bulgogi and Kalbi! One thing I look for in a restaurant is options & not just variations of the same thing and I feel satisfied here. I definitely recommend. I've talked to the owners and they expressed their passion of having fresh fish everyday and making sure the peak flavors are served to the customers! The sushi is amazing and every roll is amazing! The poke bowls are also great and the sides in addition to the fresh fish is refreshing! They also serve boba which is unique for a sushi restaurant! Make sure to try some appetizers as well. They also have monthly specials based on their customers input. One month they had Otoro, which is a rare fatty belly of a yellowfin tuna.
