The reason I go is for their amazing sushi burrito (if you haven't tried it yet, you're missing out big time). Only complaint (as usual) is the prices. A sushi burrito is $20, which is pretty steep for ONE item. It's all quality ingredients and a higher end joint which is fair, but it seems that other sushi spots are doing more for less. I've always loved Jaku as they have one of my favorite sushi rolls (the Crunch Munch 2) but it had been a long time since I'd visited either of their locations. I'm glad Nate and I stopped in recently because it was just as good as I remembered! Their dining area is a little small but we got a table right away. The low lighting and cozy seating is nice. It was a little bit warm in the restaurant (it had been a super hot week) but not too bad. The menu is huge with lots of options - sushi rolls, Korean dishes, sushi burritos, hibachi entrees, etc. We got the kosho appetizer, crunch munch 2, yellowpeno, spicy salmon, spicy scallop, and salmon sashimi. Everything came out at once except for the sashimi which was forgotten about for a bit. The kosho appetizer was something we hadn't tried before and it was so delicious. It's a jalapeno pepper stuffed with cream cheese and spicy tuna then coated and deep fried. It was a big dish with 8 pieces and was great to split between two people. I'll order this every time, the creaminess and bit of kick was so good, like the best jalapeno popper I've ever had. The rolls were all very good, the crunch munch 2 is still one of my favorites. It's just super flavorful with the sauces. The yellowpeno was my least favorite, it just didn't have a lot of flavor. The salmon sashimi was buttery and delicious as always, and more affordable than other spots at only $3 per portion. Our server was really efficient and kind and apologized about the delayed delivery of the salmon sashimi (which was totally okay). We started with an appetizer, Kosho Tempura (Deep Fried Stuffed Jalapeño) Deep fried stuffed jalapeño w/ spicy tuna and cream cheese in it. It was delicious and pretty filling! I ordered two sushi rolls and was not able to finish them after the huge appetizer. Between me and my husband, we had four rolls. They were all superb! I cannot believe I've never been to either of the Jaku locations until today. To say I was blown away is an understatement. I really cannot say I'm a sushi expert or aficionado except I can say without reservation I love sushi and really should make an effort to have it more often than maybe once a month or so. We arrived at Jaku North at noon and were seated quickly by our server. We took a while to peruse the menu as we have never been here. Besides the usual and speciality rolls, the menu was extensive with hibachi, bibimbap, bento boxes, etc. I've never seen or heard of a sushi burrito. There were several on this menu that definitely will be sampled on future visits. The whole menu reminds me of the "wall of bourbons" you see in many bars. You want to try all of them. That is the case here. We started with the gyoza. Many times this item is overcooked leaving a crunchy, flavorless exterior than drowns out what was also overcooked inside. Not here. These dumplings were perfectly prepared and merely held the insides together which burst with flavor. We also ordered a spicy tuna roll along with a jumbo spider roll. Both were better than excellent-I'd say outstanding. Service was attentive as well. Better late than never-glad we tried Jaku North. read more

This was a pleasant surprise! I am always on the hunt for good Asian food in GR, and am always happy when I do discover one. The ambience of Jaku North was super cute - I loved the layout of this small restaurant. The place was pretty clean. We got the Ton Katsu Bento, Kosho, and Bibimbap in which all I would recommend. Ton Katsu Bento ($17)- it came with miso soup, some shrimp tampura, fried pork, white rice, and Edamame. I've had softer pork - this was more on the dry side but could be remedied by the side sauce. Other than that, everything was really good. I LOVE bento boxes. Kosho ($9)- this was a shareable dish - very generous side! It was a unique dish. I loved how the cream cheese and tuna with jalapeño worked together. I was hoping it would be more spicy, but it's ok! In fact, I don't recall even getting some sort of a kick, but maybe others will feel it. Bibimbap ($17)- it was really good. Again, generous portion in which I felt matched the price tag on it. DO NOT SLEEP ON THE SUSHI CAKE!!! My boyfriend and I are huge sushi fans and when we go to Jaku, we are not disappointed. Their portions are generous and the quality if very high. So when we noticed there was a sushi cake on their menu, I had to inquire. It was extremely simple to order - I just emailed the restaurant and asked them about the cake, how much it cost and how much it would feed. The team was extremely prompt and were super helpful for me to surprise my boyfriend for his birthday. I got to customize the cake with our sushi of choice and paid for it up front. Once we arrived at the restaurant, I only had to tell the server that we ordered the sushi cake and they knew exactly who we were! Definitely felt VIP especially when we got a bunch of looks from other customers on what beautiful masterpiece we were eating. The only downside is that there is a fair bit of rice. When you think of this cake, think one BIG piece of sushi. You can cut it into pie pieces to eat or you can do what we did and just start at the top and dig to the bottom. We skipped a lot of the rice given it was so filling, but necessary for the structure of the cake itself. Jaku is definitely one of our favorite "no frills" spots since it's pretty small, but even if the ambiance is pretty chill and low key, the food is top notch. read more

We've ordered takeout from Jaku a few times, but this was our first time dining at the restaurant. It's an unassuming, strip mall location, but they do a great job! The staff was friendly and seemed to enjoy their jobs. The host sat us at a table and quickly offered menus, drinks, and asked if we had questions. We ordered the calamari and gyoza as an appetizer. The calamari was seasoned well and had a great aioli dipping sauce, but the octopus was a bit tough/chewy. The gyoza was awesome and we really enjoyed the tangy dipping sauce. We ordered our sushi, 2 orders of yellow rolls and 1 spicy tuna roll. These are simple, no-nonsense rolls but it is what sounded appealing this evening. Sometimes we try spider rolls, or Vegas rolls, or other tempura house rolls, but simple sounded good. They were indeed very good. The spicy tuna roll was a bit large and cumbersome to eat, but the taste was great. The yellowtail was perfect. It's probably my favorite fish to experience sushi with, whether it's sashimi, nigiri, or in a roll. It's just so buttery and smooth. We rounded out our meal with some warm green tea as we relaxed and enjoyed our conversation. All told, Jaku gave us some tasty sushi on a quiet, relaxed date night. Jaku is a great addition to the sushi-scene in Grand Rapids! The atmosphere is quite bright and open concept, so it's not really a "romantic" destination, but my husband and I have gone for date nights. There is a nice fireplace; we have been fortunate a few colder nights to be seated near it. While we've all been on stay-home orders we were craving sushi, so we ordered a bunch to-go from Jaku. I had my doubts that the tuna poke appetizer would be as good as takeout, but was pleasantly surprised! Instead of serving the tuna on top of the fried wontons they were packed in separate containers so the wontons didn't get soggy. We also ordered a few specialty rolls and a few standard: Spicy tuna, spicy California, Yum Yum Roll, and Fire Crunch Roll. Holy cow. Just look at the pictures. If you have a sushi craving definitely give them a shot. The next time we ordered takeout we got a sushi bento box and a tuna combo. They do a great job packing everything for takeout. And again, the food was delicious. I really like the tempura in the bento box, and the portion of edamame was a good size. It was definitely more than a single meal worth of food for me. There is a wide selection of sushi rolls with house specialties. They also have hibachi style food which is what I was looking forward to. Pretty good and filling alternative take out option! I typically order Thai, Indian, Mexican or Pizza for take out, never sushi before and I had a hankering after a friend suggested it for take out. Hubs loves sushi and toddler never tried it so I found Jaku on Yelp! I always have difficulty taking out believe it or not. From deciding where to order out, trying to figure out what to order, how to get it Uber, Doordash, Grubhub, p/u etc. and timing it so I get it in time for dinner (Tip: order way ahead and schedule p/u time and avoid peak times, like weekends or 30 mins before dinner especially if you get hangry!) I ended up calling as ordering on their website kept clearing my order every time I went back to review so I just read through the menu and gambled on a few items. Husband picked up and said the staff were super friendly and efficient. With current lockdown they had a great pick up station system and everything looked very clean and orderly. Sushi rolls as little as they look are quite filling so I ordered two and went for a bento box to add a few other items which included miso soup, battered veggies, rice and edamame. For $32 we were all very full and it was funny trying to teach my tot to use chopsticks (she likes to use her fingers for everything anyways!) I only knocked off a star because the edamame was so bland and there were too many deep fried battered items (partly my fault because I didn't know what I was ordering doh). Also, while the food was good it wasn't super tasty compared to say, Maru or Sushi Kuni, and as most of the rolls can be pretty pricey -so it better be good.
