Brought a couple friends here and had a good time. Waitress was very attentive and made us feel welcome. We ordered the kamikaze and crab mania rolls, Kimchi and seafood pancakes, takoyaki, Kimchi fried rice and yeuk-gae jang. The pancakes were good ~ but neither Kimchi nor seafood flavors were really experiences. Both tasted very similar. The takoyaki was delicious but perhaps a little too much sauce as it is pretty strong. Kimchi fried rice is as expected ~ nicely cooked egg on top with a good Kimchi fried rice base. They also added bacon into it which really changes up the flavor. Yeuk gae jang was packed full of flavor. Very good to eat with rice and a drink as the spice level kicks in after eating a couple bites.
I was excited to take a friend here because she had never tried sushi. With that in mind I knew exactly what to have her try. We got the house special roll and the volcano roll. She loved them both. I loved them both too . It's so much fun to see someone try something for the first time and light up from enjoyment. The house special roll is basically a fancy California roll and a good one to try if you've never had sushi. It has cooked shrimp and crab. The volcano roll comes with heaps of spicy crab on top of the roll and is a bit more dramatic looking. I think next time I mention sushi she won't give me a look of horror, that is, until I introduce sashimi.
Ordered delivery via UberEats, getting the Unagi (eel) with sushi rice, beef teriyaki bento box, and several sides including shrimp shumai, takoyaki, seaweed salad. The unagi entree came with a side salad and additional sides of crab, tamago. The bento box included tempura, sashimi, California roll, and takoyaki. The food was overall very good in flavor, but arrived somewhat cold. I personally appreciated the ratio of eel to rice, and the sushi rice was better with the eel that regular white rice I've had at other restaurants. Total price was $64, but this was after using the 30% off coupon with UberEats.
This was our second visit to Sushi Kuni and we had an enjoyable meal. The atmosphere is quiet and the service is friendly and attentive. We started with the miso soup which was very flavorful but there wasn't much tofu and seaweed in the soup itself. We still enjoyed it though because the broth was great. We ordered four rolls and they arrived pretty quickly. We had the Old Smokey, Calamari Tempura, Black Dragon, and Kamikaze rolls. Our favorites were the Black Dragon and Kamikaze and they were quickly gone. The Old Smokey was fresh and flavorful as well. The Calamari Tempura Roll was our least favorite because of how chewy the calamari itself was. This roll is the only reason I took away a star. Overall, this is a great option for the area it's in. Parking is easy, service is great, and the food is tasty.
Went yesterday with the family for Alyssa's birthday, all 5 of us LOVED every bit of this place. The music in the background was a chill vibe with fantastic customer service. We started with fresh seaweed salad and miso soup, followed but a variety of dishes. Lyss and I split our huge sushi boat (we ordered 6 I think) and the other meals included the chicken katsu, and 2 different rice bowls, all made to perfection. We will be back, OFTEN.
My husband and I are fairly new to sushi. Recently our daughter in-law got an assortment of rolls to go......she then shared with us so that we could see if we liked it. Not wanting to try anything that had raw fish I tried the spicy California roll and both my husband and I tried the Moonlight roll. My husband wouldn't try the California roll because *gasp* it has avocado in it. I liked both rolls, but I REALLY liked the Moonlight roll because it was deep fried and a little crispy. My husband liked the Moonlight roll too. I liked the Moonlight roll so much that I got my own roll a few nights later, and it was just like the first time I tried it. About a week later I talked my husband into getting take out yet again (I'm afraid this might be our new go to) and we decided to try another roll that was also deep fried, Crazy Boy Tempura Roll, along with our new favorite the Moonlight roll. Sadly, these rolls were not as good as our first couple of tries. They were not crispy and golden like the first couple of times we ordered. I called the restaurant to question whether they were even deep fried and I discovered that their usual process is to lightly deep fry them but if noted they WILL deep fry them long enough to get them golden and crispy. I have no idea why the first two that we got were to our liking when we didn't even ask for them to be well done, but now that it has been explained to us we will definitely be requesting that any deep fried rolls we order in the future be fried a bit longer. The gal that I spoke to offered me replacement rolls for the confusion and I will be getting those when we place our next order, along with some other items we would like to try. The fact that they offered replacement rolls, when it was really not their fault that I didn't know their process, has made me a definite return customer. Had I not called and found out the process (remember, I am a sushi virgin) I might not have ordered again as I really didn't care for the gummy texture of the lightly fried rolls. I am happy to report that my husband, a confirmed avocado hater, tried the Crazy Boy even though it had avocado and decided it wasn't too bad, however he DID prefer the Moonlight roll. I took a picture of the rolls for this review, and that came in handy when the gal at the restaurant asked to see what they looked like. I have attached the picture to this review. Take a look at it. Do you see that green stuff? My husband decided that it must be avocado because of the Crazy Boy (he must have thought it was like the guacamole you find on the side with Mexican food). I didn't know what to think, but I tried it anyway. I couldn't spit it out fast enough. It was wasabi! And it was hot. Don't make the same mistake. I have no idea what the white ribbons of something were and I was not going to try them after the instance with the wasabi. We will definitely be returning to this restaurant.........I'm not sure if I am glad or sad that it is not super close to our home.
I was really hoping to have another sushi spot in Grand Rapids to love. Sadly Sushi Kuni is not it. The server was lovely. Unfortunately she took my dime in order, and also my to-go order, and both times the order was wrong. Also, I don't want avocado that looks (and tastes) like it has been sitting out on some counter for a week. Come on people! It looked like it needed a coffin. Pretty sure it's not supposed to be HARD to bite into. If the avocado is that old, it really made me wonder about the fish. I think I will be staying away.
This used to be my favorite sushi place when I first moved to Grand Rapids, but there are so many places that have much better quality sushi. I do like that Sushi Kuni has several Korean dishes beyond the typical bibimbap. The spicy tofu soup is one of my favorites. The quality of the fish here is not that great. I have had the sashimi on several occasions and it is clear that the fish has been frozen and thawed. I know that most fish at sushi restaurants has been frozen, but the freshness of the fish at other sushi places is much better. The restaurant itself is very quiet (no ambient music), so talking with your group can be slightly awkward. I felt like I was shouting when I was there last, and I was overly aware of the people around me who seemed to be silently listening to everything I was saying- not hard to do when you could hear a pin drop! I would say check this place out for decent Korean dishes but skip the sushi and go to Jaku for that instead.
In my opinion, the best sushi in GR (and I know a few Japanese people who agree). The fish tastes fresh, the specialty roll selection is large, and the Korean food is great too. As with most sushi places, you'll get miso soup and a house salad with ginger sauce along with most of the meals. They changed the ginger sauce recipe a few years back, and it's not as awesome as it used to be. I usually like starting with gyoza or seaweed salad and then ordering an assortment of rolls to share. If you're with a group, this is the way to go - you'll get to try a bit of everything. Don't feel obliged to only order special rolls. I usually like to get a salmon hand roll for myself too. The spicy seafood bibimbop is great, and chicken katsu is a classic Japanese entree. Order the chirashi if you're into sashimi and have never tried this dish before. It's a bit expensive, but an experience you don't want to miss out on. If you're feeling some dessert, there are many ice cream options: green tea, red bean, mochi, tempura. I've never had tempura ice cream, though. Protip: it's fun to get seated in a private tatami room, in which you sit on a cushion on wooden seats.
Cool little place on Breton - came here with my parents before they left me for good at college. They've got a bunch of lunch specials and it wasn't too packed after the lunch rush. They've got salads and lunch roll specials, but we opted for classic rolls, tempura udon (which I highly recommend), and some special rolls. We got the Vegas Roll and the Calamari Roll which were both solid, and if you're looking for something outside of sushi, they've got Korean food on their menu as well.
A good find since I was craving sushi. Had the miso soup and the surprise star of the show, the takoyaki app (teriyaki octopus dumplings). Had three rolls as well (eel avocado, rainbow & dragon). Good portions and flavor. If I had to provide a negative it would be they were a little too warm. Not that I was expecting them to be cold but it was noticeable. Decent value but not the cheapest. I would recommend.
Sushi Kuni has redeemed my view of sushi in Grand Rapids. Went to a terrible place last night and thought, let me give Sushi Kuni a try. So glad I did! Sushi was fresh, presentation on point, quality was good and service was perfection. If you're not lunching at sushi Kuni and getting a sushi and sashimi lunch combo for ~$20, then what are you doing??? Great prices, especially in this ridiculously expensive economy and good fish. Definitely will be back. read more

I would call this review neutral as I didn't have a GREAT experience with my dish - but - I honestly feel like I ordered wrong. They don't have a lot of veg options unless you're doing sushi - and - honestly the veg sushi rolls are more or less what you can get at any sushi place in GR, so I decided to try something different. I ended up going with the Bibimbop with the meat replaced with Tofu and it just didn't work for me. The sauce didn't taste right to me which left me with a pretty bland dish otherwise. That was disappointing. I did, however, get the Mushroom Soup as an appetizer and it was so good! I'm not a big mushroom soup person and I'd order this again without hesitation -- highly recommend it. Overall the service was great, the atmosphere was great, and the presentation was great. Combine that with the fact my wife liked her dish and my soup was excellent I think I just ordered a bad dish - or - caught a bad batch of sauce. I'd try this place again, for sure, and get sushi -- but I'd avoid an entrée. read more
Uber Eats review: I used to love this place when it was the old sushi spot - forgot the name! But I still love supporting a local sushi spot (even though I can't eat the uncooked stuff right now!). I had a rare night to myself and instead of going out to eat, I treated myself to a night in with a feast for one! Uber Eats was super fast and delivered my tofu soup still hot! Everything was presented beautifully and it didn't look like the food moved a centimeter during the 20 minute ride to my house! Kudos to my driver Serugo! I loved everything in my cucumber salad but would've loved MORE of everything in it. I guess for the price (just under $7), I got what I paid for, but it seemed small. Also, for a cucumber salad, there was more radish than cucumber. The tofu soup lacked flavor and seemed very greasy, but it definitely hit the comfort food spot that I was craving. The tofu was definitely silky smooth and I liked how the veggies were cooked down to a super soft consistency. The side of rice was key to rounding out this dish too (never ordered it before). The side salad was standard but the ginger sauce seemed watered down. The AAC roll was also standard. Overall, I was satisfied for what I paid for (quick and convenient). First time here & it was great! I got 2 rolls and my friend got bimibap and gyoza. Everything was delicious. Service was very fast and friendly and the atmosphere was very nice. Updated: Came back again. Got tempura ice cream. So delicious! read more

Went to Sushi Kuni for my husbands birthday dinner after my sister in law raves about it. We ordered the "sushi boat B" and call me dramatic but I was a little salty it didn't come on a boat. It was a plate. Boo hoo, I know. I typically wouldn't care but was hoping for some pizazz for this birthday shenanigans. We also had a tiger roll which was fantastic. The rolls had the perfect amount of rice and were well balanced with the other ingredients. Any who, the sushi was really tasty, came out quickly and the service was attentive. Would definitely come back again, boat included. read more

Second time coming here with my boyfriend (who if you've read any of my other reviews know we eat sushi once a week for the past year)... LONG list of specialty rolls that are all pretty unique. The ONE strip mall sushi I'm NOT afraid to eat. The waiter was super sweet with recommending rolls for us. We we're really impressed that he wasn't trying to get us to eat the most expensive or generic rolls but gave us an honest reccomendation based on what else we've had. My boyfriend LOOOOOVES the Michigan roll, which I have to say, is pretty damn tasty but I love their Kamikaze! Crabmania or whatever it's called was GREAT!!!! The Crystal roll is the most unique roll we've had. I know there were other rolls we had, and the other time we went as well, but those were the ones that come to mind. You know when the sushi is fresh... and IT WAS! This is a five star place compared to other options in the are we checked out, but from someone who eats sushi often its a solid four. Excellent Sushi Restaurant! I'm so embarrassed that it took me so long to eat here, but I'm never going anywhere else now! Came in on valentine's day night for dinner. We arrived early to beat the rush and didn't have an issue getting a booth. Our server quickly welcomed us and gave us the menus. Being Valentines, they offered a special on a bottle of wine, which we ordered. The menu is extensive with allot of great options for the sushi novice or the sushi junkie. My husband and I settled on different Sushi and Sashimi combo plates to try a little of everything. I also ordered a seaweed salad and my husband got the Miso soup. I typically don't like Miso soup but in trying a taste of his, I had a change of heart. Apparently, every other place has been doing it wrong because this Meso was super tasty! Although my seaweed salad was good, I wish I would've gotten the soup instead. Our main plates came out quickly and my one and only complaint about my visit was that our server didn't explain what each item was. We guessed at what we were eating but found everything superbly crafted. I ordered tempura ice-cream to finish the meal off. It first time having it and I was in love at first bite! Price was very reasonable for sushi, wine, and desert dinner and we left full but not stuffed. Can't wait to come back! read more

I came and tried their sashi combo and seaweed salad. -Sashimi combo: fish was slightly fishy, did not taste extremely fresh like it should. After three visits, this has hands down become one of my favorite sushi restaurants...ever. It is most definitely my favorite in Grand Rapids! The sushi is always fresh and fantastic. I love every roll that I have tried from their simple spicy tuna, to the more elaborate lobster roll or the flame kissed BBQ roll, which is served on fire. I always start with the house salad. It is served with their homemade ginger dressing that is TO DIE FOR! I am always tempted to order a second one...! I have only tried a few dishes outside of sushi. The fried rice was very good!! The staff is super friendly, only adding to the overall great dining experience that is to be found at Sushi Kuni. The restaurant usually has a relatively quiet atmosphere. So it is easy to converse with the people you come with.. unlike some other sushi restaurants in the area. The decor is simple but nice. Very clean. I really do not have a bad thing to say about this place... oh, and their green tea ice cream is super yummy :), great end to the meal! read more

Sushi kuni I'm from NYC, so I wasn't sure what to expect from a sushi restaurant in Grand Rapids. But I was in the mood for sushi so I took my chances. I'm not exaggerating when I say this: It was the best sushi I've ever had! Put it this way: it was so good, I went there again the next night! I ordered some special rolls. One had thin slices of Filet Mignon on top, which I've never seen before. It wasn't a "traditional" roll, but definitely a nice twist. I also had another special roll, which was full of flavor, called the BBQ roll. It had different fish inside, cooked eel on top, wrapped in foil, and served on fire. Crazy right?! It was delicious. Their other rolls were phenomenal. As with most good sushi restaurants, their prices are a little steep, but well worth the money. They say you get what you pay for, and this is no exception. Need I say more? No, so get over to sushi kuni for the best sushi ever! read more
Food is very good. They have a nice assortment of Japanese and Korean dishes and sushi. They also have a small kids menu with reasonably priced and healthy options. I've been to sushi kuni 4 times and have always sat at the sushi bar. I have been to many sushi bars and restaurants around the country. The one thing sushi kuni needs to take their restaurant to the next level is to get sushi chefs that are friendly, high energy, and exciting to be around. These guys are boring. They don't even put your sushi in front of you at the bar when it is ready. Instead they put it on the waitstaff counter for the waiter or waitress to deliver it. They need to get some personality. They don't even talk or smile at all. I think it's because the grumpy owner ruins it for everyone. If they can bring some fun to the bar I have no doubt they would do much better. read more

Coming in at about 4pm, I wasn't surprised that they didn't notice me walk in but once I was seated, service was great. I ordered the beef Gyoza to start and the Detroit and Choi's rolls. The gyoza was incredibly crispy and the sauce was to die for. Full of flavor and the perfect consistency. It wasn't watery but wasn't thick either. My sushi was nice, but the rolls felt quite large. The Choi's was a good size and the inside tasted great. The filet on top was nice and tender but I expected a bit more flavor out of the Korean bbq on top. The Detroit roll had great flavor, with lots of flavorful sauces (sweet mustard, wasabi Mayo) but the size of the roll barely fit in my mouth, making it a bit messy. Sushi here is the best in town well....that I know of so far :) I had korea seafood pancake which was okay. Not the best but not too chabby. Sushi was great. I still have to go back and check for other special rolls they have to offer. The one I ordered was similar to spider roll with shrimp tempura in the same roll.....loved it! read more

Went to Sushi Kuni and was absolutely in love with them! The sushi was amazing and so much better than most all other places in town! We sat at the sushi bar and ordered some rolls and a dish off their menu. The special of the night was called "Choi's roll" and they said that it will be on their menu from now on. You have to get it and it is so fun to watch him make it. The roll has filet mignon strips on top and he torches it to cook it in the flames. It is big and its delicious! We will definitely be back and I think we have found our place for sushi. We are looking to go with some friends and order a sushi boat. When that happens, I will be back to yelp about it!
