We shared some shrimp shumai and a few sushi rolls. The spider roll was tasty, sushi overall tasted good. The shumai was good although I could tell they weren't homemade. The sauce was a bit too sweet so I just added some soy sauce to balance it out. We had a nice server and it was about $70 including tip for an app and 3 sushi rolls.

And what they like -- and what they both can agree on in a dining-out situation -- is sushi. Well, California rolls. Do California rolls count as sushi? Don't answer that. In any case, we were in Grand Rapids and looking for a place to eat. My youngest, as he is sometimes wont to do, was a breath away from melting down. He was tired and hungry. The situation was getting dire. Suddenly, in the distance, we spotted Ato Sushi. Yes! Sushi would save the evening. It turned out: Sushi DID save our evening! The service at Ato Sushi was friendly and efficient, my favorite combo. We were able to sit down at a table, order drinks immediately, and then order food almost immediately after that. Once we ordered, our food came out quickly. We got edamame to share, which was perfectly steamed and slightly salted. We also got the vegetable tempura to share, which was a pile of battered and fried onion rings, and slices of sweet potato and zucchini. We ordered a few different rolls: The California roll (of course), as well as a rainbow roll and a spicy number that I forget the name of. All of our sushi was fresh and delicious. We loved what we ate so much that we ordered another rainbow roll, just because. We left satisfied but not overly full, which is what I love about dining on sushi. It's always just enough. We visited during an off time (early dinner), so there were plenty of seats to choose from. But toward the end of our visit, the tables were quickly filling up. This place is a popular spot, apparently! They also have outdoor seating, if you want to sit outside.

This was a real gem and some of the best sushi I've had in a long time! You have to enter a larger…read morebuilding and go downstairs to find Sushi-Yama. They have seating in the lobby area and a few small tables inside the restaurant as well the actual restaurant is crowded, and they have lots of supplies and some items for sale right up front. You circle what you want on a piece of paper, pay up front, and then get your meal. The two men working were so nice and sweet. One of them had his kid there as well, which I found heartwarming. I ordered the sashimi special, 18 pieces of chefs choice sashimi, and a seaweed salad. The second I tried the seaweed salad I knew I had come to the right place! It was cool and refreshing with a great texture and salty flavor. The sashimi was beautiful and made with care. The fish was cold and fresh with distinct flavors. It was high quality and a good value. I wish I lived closer so I could come regularly!

The gentleman who runs this place should get an award from the city. During a recent visit, I witnessed the owner get cussed out by a fully grown adult who asked for the bathroom code without ordering anything. I was appalled at the level of indecency and lack of courtesy. Please note that it is the restaurant's policy (and likely the building's policy) that bathroom codes are only given to customers. Please, if you see behavior like this when you're at Sushi-Yama, please, please stand up against such ridiculous and childish behavior.

It was a super snowy night so it wasn't busy at all and we were seated right away. The menu is large and has regular items in addition to all you can eat, a lunch menu with specials, and they have hibachi tables on one side of the restaurant. Since we had plans after dinner I didn't want to do the all you can eat, but I would come back for it in the future. Nate and I ordered hot tea, two specialty rolls, one basic roll, and two orders of salmon sashimi. Everything came out at once on one big plate which was great. We ended up getting salmon sushi instead of sashimi. The rolls were a decent portion without being too huge to eat, and I did enjoy them. They kind of all tasted similar to me but the fish seemed fresh. The salmon sushi was not the best I've had though, but the prices are reasonable. Before tip our bill was about $50. While it's not going to beat my top favorite spot for sushi, Nagoya is on my list of places to revisit soon!

Some of the dishes lacked flavor and the salmon Nirgir didn't taste very fresh. If you're looking for a sushi option there are better choices in GR!
