I've been to the Nagoya on 28th Street for all you can eat sushi and had a good experience, so I wanted to check out their downtown location before heading to a show at DeVos recently. It was a super snowy night so it wasn't busy at all and we were seated right away. The menu is large and has regular items in addition to all you can eat, a lunch menu with specials, and they have hibachi tables on one side of the restaurant. Since we had plans after dinner I didn't want to do the all you can eat, but I would come back for it in the future. Nate and I ordered hot tea, two specialty rolls, one basic roll, and two orders of salmon sashimi. Everything came out at once on one big plate which was great. We ended up getting salmon sushi instead of sashimi. The rolls were a decent portion without being too huge to eat, and I did enjoy them. They kind of all tasted similar to me but the fish seemed fresh. The salmon sushi was not the best I've had though, but the prices are reasonable. Before tip our bill was about $50. While it's not going to beat my top favorite spot for sushi, Nagoya is on my list of places to revisit soon! read more

Checked out Nagoya after hearing about it from a couple friends. Seated right away it seems like a narrow space with limited seating and a kitchen in the back. I didn't look further but the decor was nice with some Asian elements. We ordered sake right away for our beverage and both enjoyed it. I ordered the sashimi deluxe which comes with 18 pcs of fish with a bowl of sushi rice for $32. Along with white tuna nigiri and scallop nigiri. Loved everything!! Weston ordered the crunchy crab roll which he seemed to really enjoy and also got his fave smoked salmon nigiri. The servers were both nice and attentive. I felt like I was being asked if I needed anything a lot but I'd rather have that than be ignored. Good experience. Would come back again to try more! They have hibachi dinners and SO many sushi rolls on their menu so I have a lot to try when I come back:) read more

Very quick service- got my order pretty quickly. It I can be pretty hidden! It doesn't hold a lot seats so I would suggest making a reservation. If you can park on rainbow road that would be best. I saw that they finally opened another restaurant in this spot and knew I had to try it. If I could give 3.5 stars, I probably would but I'd round up closer to 4. Nagoya is conveniently located off of Divison/Monroe Center (where Osteria Rossa used to be) and I love the idea of another sushi place being downtown! We arrived right as they opened (11am) for lunch and it took a few minutes for someone to greet us and seat us, but once that happened, the service was great! He was super friendly and attentive. Given it was lunch, we wanted to keep it simple and decided to save hibachi for another night. Plus, we love sushi so we opted to get a lunch sushi combo instead! I went with my classic rainbow and California roll. While my boyfriend got the California and sashimi combo. This is not the best sushi I've ever had but I would say it's the best I've had in downtown GR. People may argue with me on that since I know there are many that love Maru, but I would probably consider going here instead. It was reasonably priced, easy to get to (I walked so just be warned it's downtown parking) and we ordered basic items. For AYCE Sushi in Grand Rapids this is one of my favorites to go to as the variety and price is a pretty good balance in my opinion The quality of the ingredients were pretty standard, nothing too special. My favorite rolls were the crunchy crab roll, fire ninja roll, and the Godzilla roll. Would highly suggest the fire ninja roll if you like deep fried rolls. For the nigiri or the "Sushi" section of the menu would definitely recommend the salmon. The service was great, our waitress got our orders in quickly, came out quick, and was very kind. I love the decor there, especially with the art prize going on while I was there it was nice to look at the art while eating. Even so the decor there normally really fit the vibe of the restaurant. Overall I would definitely recommend if you are looking for a spot in Grand Rapids for AYCE Sushi. For $16 (without tip) for lunch is a really great price and the variety of selection is pretty good compared to other places. Especially since they have nigiri you can choose from. read more

Stopped in on a summer Saturday night at 8pm and my husband and I were surprised to find we were the only other set of diners. We were seated at the hibachi table and treated to friendly and speedy service, and opted for the couple's special. This included soup, salad, fried rice, steak/chicken/shrimp/lobster for $68. The portions are ample and the quality appears to be consistent with what you would expect. Couple concerns- they don't have over the head table vents. Solid addition to the area. I can for the hibachi show and sushi. I'm not a big fan of steak but if you are, I'd advise to order the filet mignon instead of the regular steak, it's worth the small up-charge. If you get the regular steak then I advise ordering a level rarer than you'd like because it cooks easily so if you want medium rare, it might taste medium or more cooked as my husband's did. Fortunately, I was already very happily full from all the sushi I ate. I had the Spider-Man roll, the Out Of Control, and the Volcano Roll. Apparently the Bagel Roll is kinda popular but I didn't try it on this trip. My husband also got the sashimi appetizer which was also good - fresh fish. The two of us shared a table with a party of six. So if your party doesn't take up the full 8 people that fits at the hibachi tables, know that you might have to share. I'm glad to see more cultural restaurants opening up in Grand Rapids. From being raised in an Asian Family and actually visiting Japan and other Asian countries, I feel like I tend to have higher standards for Asian food. We got Rock & Shrimp for our appetizer, and the shrimp was juicy and soft while the tempura was nice and crunchy. The contrast between the two textures of the soft shrimp juxtaposed to the crunch of tempura was amazing in a single bite. The sauce was spicy Mayo, so nothing crazy or unique but it was still a good dish. I got the Red Dragon Roll, which has lobster salad, crab meat, avocado, and tuna. It was surprisingly sweet, and I couldn't pick up on what was causing the sweet flavor but that definitely made the roll good. My boyfriend got the Steak Teriyaki Bento and we liked the variety and you definitely got your moneys worth. You get fried egg rolls, dumplings, sushi and steak with veggies. Food wise, it was good but nothing memorable. I also thought the restaurant should have more descriptions of each meal, like what the Bento consists of. The waitress was super nice and came often to our table despite being busy. The service was good and we enjoyed the experience here. If you want a good Japanese meal downtown, you should try this place! If you want to be amazed, you should look somewhere else. read more

The salad dressing tasted like sweet thousand island, not sure what the soup was, tasted ok but was barely warm, hibachi steak was ok but the steak was chewy and flavors were very mid, sushi was not good...I won't go into all the details but one thing I will mention is the shrimp tempura roll had the kind of fried shrimp you would get from an American diner - breaded. We won't be going back. 1. We had reservations to celebrate a friends birthday. We made reservations 2 weeks before, and luckily we called to double check beforehand because they had no record of our initial reservation. 2. Our reservation was for 7 PM. We were not seated until 7:30. The hibachi chef did not start until 8:15. Food wasn't ready until 845. 3. No liquor license 4. You expect to pay more for food at a hibachi restaurant because you pay for the show. There was absolutely no show, only a person attempting to cook the food in front of us. 5. Food was burnt and very greasy. I ordered steak and scallops for $30+ tax. The meat was a low quality sirloin that was over cooked. Scallops were burnt on outside but undercooked in middle. The fried rice crunched in your mouth. We also ordered a shrimp tempura roll. This was fine, but I would not come back for just sushi. 6. The place reeked of grease and smoke. None of the grills had overhead vents, so there was little to no ventilation. The floors were slippery from grease build up. I'm surprised this is considered up to code. The one positive was the host staff - they were clearly understaffed and doing their best to keep the night moving. read more

The young lady who seated us was apologetic and honestly we all understand lack of help but once we sat down we had to deal with a rude prick-ish waiter.
