I have never been to the space, but I'm so happy that one of my friends recommended it and took me there last week. We went at like 3 o'clock on a Saturday. The lunch crowd was basically gone so it was just us and another couple so we sat right up at the bar and spoke with the chef and watched to make takeout orders while we chatted and enjoyed our time. Service was amazing. The fish was fresh (most important thing for sushi imo) and everything seemed very clean as well. I will have to return again because I really enjoyed the salmon Nigiri. Parking was pretty easy as they're located in a strip mall right off 28 street. Also, it is AAPI month so definitely check them out in May and every other month! 5/5!!! read more

i ordered online vis doordash and was not disappointed. i ordered the eel/cucumber roll and the baked red snapper roll. both were delicious even though i didn't get to eat it right away. when i came in to pick up my order, i was greeted by the sushi chefs who made it easy for me to grab my order. i would love to dine in here as it looked cute and cozy! the restaurant is located in a pretty high traffic area being on the corner of 28th and east paris and parking is shared with a nail salon, other restaurants, and a gym but i was able to find a spot easily. i definitely want to take my sushi friends here to try more rolls! read more

I don't remember the last time I went to Mikado so I met up with my friend and fellow sushi lover Olivia for dinner recently. The space is cozy with nice lighting and we were seated right away. The menu is HUGE with lots of rolls, platters, entrees, and more. They even had additional menu items posted on the wall at each table. It was a little overwhelming but I knew I wanted some sashimi and a roll. They also have beer, wine, and sake. I got the S15 moriawase (16 pieces of sashimi) and the hot night roll. The sashimi came with a soup and a salad. The salad was very fresh and crisp, and I loved the dressing. The miso soup was classic and delicious. The sashimi was tasty and a good variety - I'd definitely get this again. The roll was good, but not the best I've had. I would try a different roll next time. It was a decent portion and the pieces were not too large. The owners were very sweet and kind, and I enjoyed saying a few Korean phrases to them, which they loved. Mikado Sushi is another great place to go for creative sushi presentations and just plain good sushi. I'll admit I'm far from a sushi expert but I've enjoyed everything I've ordered from Mikako. We started with Gyoza (chicken dumplings). Too often, choices like this are overcooked with most of the flavor lost in the hard crust of the dumpling. Not at Mikado. These dumplings were perfectly prepared and were extremely good. We then ordered a Mikado roll (shrimp tempura, chili tuna, etc) and a soft shell crab (Spider) roll. Both rolls were delicious. If I have any complaints, it is that they only serve Diet Coke by the can. I much prefer the fountain variety. It's a small issue to overcome when the rolls are so good. We need to put Mikado on our regular Sushi rotation. read more

If this were a wedding ceremony, I would say I Mi Ka DO! Ordered the Nabeyaki Udon today because I was cold and needed a warm up - when I went inside I was cheerfully greeted by the sushi chef. As I was paying I looked around and found the ambiance nice and cozy - I could see myself coming back to dine in. I retreated back to my office from the west Michigan arctic tundra and opened up the container - not only did the soup stay hot, it was filled to the brim with noodles, chicken, veggies, an egg, and a tempura fried shrimp. Possibly the best customer service ever. The food was amazing, sushi tasted fresh, and we were served a little orange monkey at the end!!! Fed three people for $50 with two sushi platters that came with salads, miso soup, and the orange after. Updating a prior review where an internet glitch or I fat fingered and entered one star for Mikado which definitely wasn't my intent. Mikado is legit and my go-to for sushi in GR-- because it gets the job done. This is not foo-foo Americanized sushi but it does have some nods to what our American tastes have come to expect (like the so-called "Philadelphia Roll" which my gf always tries to defend to me when i tell her it does not exist and any sushi master in Tokyo would come after you with a samurai sword if I you tried to order one). Good appetizers like shrimp tempura, soft shell crab, goma ae, shrimp shumai. Lunch specials and some of their combo meals are a naughty indulgence--i like the beef teriyaki & tempura or sushi combo. They don't bring flaming rolls out to your table or other theatrics, but the sushi is tasty and what is should be. If you haven't been in to mikado get in there. read more

BEWARE! BEWARE! BEWARE! On takeout orders, the staff miscalculates the bill. Overcharging on my takeout bill has happened three times and is done by the person at the cash register. The latest was $38.25 overcharge. My wife brought home the food, and the receipt showed $108.25. I had calculated the bill before I called to order at $70.00. My wife said the cashier used a hand calculator (no doubt, so there is no record produced) to generate the bill. The person types a mile-a-minute, then hands you an un-itemized bill. When I confronted them over the phone, the person lapsed into Japanese (I think) and then, within a minute, said, "Oh yes, here is the bill. We owe you $38.25." He knew I caught them grifting. This overcharging is part of Mikado's standard operating procedure. They are crooks and have no honor. read more

I had this on my list of paces to go in Gr, but it did not live up to my expectations. I got sushi and sashimi and both were okay, nothing I would ever need to eat again. My husband got the stone bowl bipembop which he enjoyed. The miso soup and salad were good as well. For the spicier side of life, the Vegas roll is wild and crazy. Its a deep fried spicy tuna roll topped with a spicy mixture of tomatoes, tuna, Sirachi and tobiko Oh my! I personally love their Kimchee roll, its big without being excessive and has crab and cucumber inside. It is spicy, crunchy and satisfying. For appetizers my son loves their Gyoza, in fact we have to order him 2, just for him, and he is only 11. The Oshinko, or japanese pickles, is the best Oshinko in town and they have 5 varieties for you to try in one app! Oh and I have to mention that their Tai Nigiri, or Snapper, which is also the best single piece of Nigiri in Grand Rapids. They top it with a unique sauce, a few chives and tobiko for a unique flavor and experience that keeps me coming back time and time again. The Eel, also the best! There is plenty of other non Sushi options as well from Teriyaki to Udon to Tempura and all of it is hands down the best of GR. Honestly, I was recommended to give this place a shot and my fiancé and I were nervous. Something about strip mall sushi just doesn't sound appetizing. We were originally planning on calling in and picking up a takeout order but their sushi on their online menu doesn't have descriptions. I didn't want to have to guess what I was ordering on my first visit. From the second we walked in, the service was great. I was extremely impressed by this since multiple reviews stated that the service was average at best. Each employee greeted us, including the 3 men behind the sushi bar. They quickly brought us hot tea, a warm towel, and some type of ginger thing to try (which we weren't fans of) while we looked over the menu. We ended up ordering the Godzilla roll, caterpillar roll, Hawaiian roll, and N1 which was a noodle/soup thing. Overall, we enjoyed the Godzilla a lot and the other 2 specialty rolls were average. The Hawaiian roll had pineapple which we knew was different but we wanted to try it. The noodle soup was very tasty and large enough to share. Just like when we came in, each staff member thanked us as we walked out. Overall, I was actually impressed with our experience and don't have many complaints. Got take out. Walked in a hour before close and the entire staff is eating Jet's. Which is totally cool, I love Jet's but it seemed liked I was an annoyance and they didn't want to be bothered. Told them I'm allergic to avocado, still put avocado on both rolls. I got the Mexican roll and a tempura Philadelphia roll. When I asked for the Philly roll to be deep fried they all started talking and laughing which was really uncomfortable. You know when people are talking shit. In LA that's a common roll known as Sunday Morning. They added crab? and it wasn't fully cooked/covered in tempura, no cucumber, sloppy and soggy. I didn't realize until I got home and they were closed. What a waste of $31 plus $9 tip. If this is the best sushi in GR I need to move back to LA. read more

Came here for lunch around noon. Very unimpressed. The food wasn't great and the service was even more lackluster. I ordered the lunch chicken katsu. The actual katsu was fine, kind of dry, but otherwise okay. The dipping sauce for the katsu was straight up ketchup mixed with soy sauce and was absolutely disgusting. A side of white rice came with the meal and I found a hair in it. My boyfriend ordered a sushi & sashimi plate which was mostly okay. The tuna and salmon sashimi seemed fresh. The sushi roll had old masago on it though and looked terrible. Both meals came with miso soup. This was nothing more than some miso paste in hot water with three small cubes of tofu added. Tasted very off. All of this subpar food cost $39.10. I cannot recommend Mikado. They need to step up their food and service game. read more

The menu here has a large selection of Japanese dishes and sushi. This was where I fell in love with unagi and I have since compared any other I've eaten to here. Everything is always beautifully presented and exceptionally tasty! Other than a few bites off friends' plates, I haven't tried many of the entrees, since I can't get past the sushi.
